Church leaders support protest of Ethiopian Muslims

In a historic and unprecedented move, His Grace Abune Melke Tsadik of the Ethiopian Orthodix Tewahdo Church (EOTC) called on Christians to support the uprising of  Muslims against the Ethiopian regime.

Abune Melke Tsadik made the announcement at a press conference held today, May 12, 2012 in Washington, D.C.

“Our Muslim brothers are being harassed and abused,” said His Grace.  He continued that the Church speaks out because “Our Muslim brothers are also Ethiopians… they are facing the same fate as us (Christians)”

The Church leaders’ stance will likely be a blow to the minority regime of Meles Zenawi that has successfully divided and misruled Ethiopia for the last 21 years.

The historic stand of Ethiopian Christian leaders is a tipping point.  It is bound to frustrate efforts by Prime Minister Zenawi and his supporters to disingenuously link legitimate Muslim protests to international terrorism.

  1. We all have to thank and support the leaders of the EOTC for their stance for justice for all Ethiopians. Even though they are the leaders of the Christian church they can not stand by while other Ethiopians are treated the way they are treated by this government. Ethiopia is for all.

Their decision sends unequivocal message not only to the TPLF dominated minority government also to all other enemy Arab countries who had been waiting to say our Moslem brothers are second class citizens. We proved it to them that Ethiopia is for all Christians, Moslems, Jews, or Non believers.

Our Moslem brothers’ problem is our problem, their enemy is our enemy, their enemy is TPLF/Woyane government and that is our enemy too.

The christian faith, the churches and the monastries are actually the ones that have been attacked relentlessly by this government. It interfered in the business of the church and divided it, burnt down the churches and their surroundings and so on and on.

  2. i am realy realy proud of my felow christian brother and sister thats the way we can save the country,as long as good constitution and good justice sistem why not we can achive what we want for ethiopia!

  3. Elias Kifle the GREAT (Keep it up!),
this is a great news to all genuine Ethiopians. The church leaders called for the support of our Muslim Ethiopian brothers. Let us support them. Where are the students of Addis Abeba University. Stand up together with our muslim brothers for the right of the oppressed. The time is now to kill the snakes.
The minority Tigrayan regime must leave power without ifs and buts. Peace lover Tigrayans must join the movemnet now, unless Ethiopoa will be Ruanda.

    A Peaceful Ethiopia will prevail.

  5. In my opinion it doesn’t sound right to me because in our country the problem is about democracy. rather than creating dangerous path why they do not want join to fight for justice?how many ordinary Muslims and Christians members denied their rights displaced taken their land their dignity. both faith leaders are using ordinary people to influence for benefit of their own, nothing people benefit from it . when Gambela people slotted where where are they?when in Asebot monks, nuns raped killed where are they?let us be fair as people, let our fight be for our right, it doesn’t matter who is going to lead as sheik or pope what it matter is your personal relationship with creator, government have no power over your or the sheik or the pope. but if we united we both for common purpose we shall win and gain our freedom ,this freedom can gives us to elect the leader who serve us not the leader who uses and divides us by religion, by tribe etc…

  8. Speaking in behalf of all Ethiopians who are being muzzled, abused, tortured and killed and overall for Human Rights of all Ethiopians is a right and Godly thing to do. I’m proud of the leaders of EOTC for standing up against the group of armed Evil men and women who have been spilling the blood of countless number of poor innocent Ethiopians and defending the defenseless Ethiopians. regardless, the individuals who are being abused and tortured happen to be Christians or Muslims. The leaders of EOTC have shown what it means to believe in the true meaning of the Merciful God. On the other hand, Evil lives, loves and enjoys the sufferings of God’s children, the distractions and miseries of innocent human beings.

May God keep on blessing and protecting the leaders of EOTC to keep on to love and protect the poor, to defend the defenseless and the voiceless Ethiopians.

  9. We need to heed the call by the religious leaders to mobilize the people for peaceful protest against the ongoing persecution, human right abuse, and lack of religious freedom .if not now when is we to say enough. The leaders of political parties need to work together for this event.
    [Gabriel]
I believe you completely miss understood the spirit of this call made by the oversee Ethiopian Orthodox synod. As you know both faith, the Christians and the Muslims, have been under assault. Therefore the purpose of this call is not as you alleged for the religious leaders to divide the population or out of the desire of the religious leaders to be political leaders. Instead, they are struggling for a government that will respect the right of citizens in general and religious freedom in particular.

As to your question where have these leaders been when the Gambelan people and the Asebot monks were slaughtered? Here is my answer to your question. As you know since its arrival the government has been staging killings of our people by isolating one group at a time. However in the last four months the melese regime has staged multiple assaults simultaneously upon the population. For instance it try to control the Moslem faith by installing its own favorite leader, It demanded Waldba monks to give their land and to this end it demolished 6 churches around Waldba for her project, Its security forces killed some members of the Afar, It expelled the Amhara peasants from the South, it conducted across border raid to Eretria, still it killed local Gambelans for the killings of Saudi farm employees.

The government of Melese contrary to common sense and logic but acting in his own interest staged the above assaults upon the people.Indoing so he produced a perfect storm for the present situation. If you are for democracy and change this is the moment to unite and resist against this regime. In previous times the people have hard time to come together due to existing obstacle within different political organizations .However, at the present the people realized the government of Melese is about to lead the nation into chaos. There for the situation calls for all the population to unite and demand change of regime. To this end the formation of representative government is underway. You need to see in far ahead what is the alternative if we sit by and watch as usual? Unless you are weyane sympathizer, from our point of view we need to support this call.
