Protests at Bahir Dar and Gondar Universities

Following the protests and arrest of students of Debre Markos University, northern Ethiopia, in the past two days, the students of Bahir Dar University and Gonder University have began large scale protests today.

It has been confirmed that both Poly and Peda Campuses of Bahir Dar University (BDU) and Tewodors and Maraki Campuses of Gonder University (GU) have spent the whole day today (09 May 2012) protesting. “The student’s protest is spreading like a wildfire” said a student from Maraki Campus, GU.  Regional police force and Federal police are approaching the campuses.

Several students have been injured and arrested following “rights related” protests by Debre Markos University  students in the past two days. “Food poison” is also said to be one of the causes.

There are over 40,000 students in both Bahir Dar and Gonder Universities enrolled in the regular program.

    Please dont tell us that there are not individuals like him in every country. Just look at the US, you have plenty of them.
    The important thing is that those individuals dont get the chance to seize state power.
    Why was that the case in Ethiopia ?
    Well you know who helped that individual to seize state power.
    Dont say shabia or arabs because with shabia and arab support alone Derg would have managed to take care of the TPLF problem.
    It was the US that helped that individual to seize state power.
    That should not be forgotten.

    The time has come for those living in the US to choose.They are either with Ethiopia or with the US and against Ethiopia. We have to view the present general situation in Ethiopia as an American war waged against our country.

    I tell you, this attempt by Ethiopians living in the US to rationalize and excuse American wrongdoings in Ethiopia and shift the focus away from the US and give other explanations for those wrongdoings is widespread and annoying.

    I always wonder why these people can’t recognize very obvious facts and express them.
    For example they should be able to say loudly and repeatedly that it is wrong and immoral that the US helped Meles Zenawi and co. to seize state power in Ethiopia despite knowing their attitude toward Ethiopia and some ethnic groups.
    They should be able to condemn the US for that.

    Basically what the US has been doing in Ethiopia the last 20 years is not different from picking an aggressive and mad man from a lunatic asylum, arm him with deadly weapons and put him in a room crowded with small children.
    What is worse is, after watching the mad man killing the kids indiscriminately the US even encourages the killer to continue the killing and supply him with ammunitions.

  2. Gondar U 3 three student killed by armed tigre students who resides in the campus. The chief security and chief of youth association are tigrian in Gondar town and are on rampage of killing. The tigre are now declared on the process of final push on ethiopia for its demise under the watch of our eyes.

    Yes, I came across this very news a couple of day ago while listening to Sheger Radio 1.02 FM out of Addis Ababa. Nither Sheger nor this blog has produced a detail, if any, reason for the protest. I do hope to read more on this current issue.

    It is amazing the current Ethiopian students never complain about the lack of justice and rule of law. Every time I read about Ethiopian student protests, it is always related to “a stomach” problem. They are always looking out for their stomach.

    Gone are the days when protest mean something. In my days we struggled for such noble causes as “Land for the tiller”. These guys are amazing. Let alone fighting for nobler causes, they are sitting by and watching all the victories we scored are being eroded by woyane. We abolished the Tenant system, but now every one is a tenant of TPLF and we have turned the country backwards to serfdom, woyane being the landlord the people of Ethiopia being the serfs.

    Yet these guys go on protesting for tasty food on the menu.

Are you denying that the major starvation for which Ethiopia was known throughout the world, to this day, happened during your corrupt king Selassie? Too bad it was said Mengistu just killed him and buried him under his office. The king should had been hanged in public for all the crimes he committed against Ethiopians.

    Dummy, you got that one wrong too. You cannot even translate our Ethiopian proverb right. The origiinal goes like this: enat lelijwa mit tastemeralech. Losely translation goes: a daughter attempts to teach her mother how to labor.

    I was hoping you might contribute by going to the Amharic section of this site, I guess you cannot, because failed to repeat an existing Ethiopian proverb which was in plain Amharic. Go back to your militia thing..

    Dear Ethiopian students this was what diaspora Ethiopians were expecting from you. Remove the snakes once and for all. Woyane must GO GO GO GO GO Go! let’s get started. Woyane will try to instigate war with Eritrea in order to divert attention. Some are even saying, that Woyane will let crash an Ethiopian Aeroplane; and then it will blame Eritrea for that. But this time, the Ethiopian people will not fight on the wrong side; on the side of the Woyanes. We will not be deceived again and loose our loved ones for nonsense.
    If the students of the university of Mekele do not join this protest NOW (but NOW), it will be hard for them later to live peacefully with the other ethnic groups of Ethiopia.
    Everyone must join hands to remove the cancer, WOYANE.

    So, is this supposed to be a warning or threat tho Mekele students. First of all Mekele students are comprised of many ethnics. Sounds like ignorance is your enemy. If you mean Tigrayans, pro ably you should stop worying about them only because contrary to your threat, they never knew peace anyways. Ever since the beginning war, disaster, starvation, disease and all types of miseries have been entertwined with the livelyhoods of ethiopian tigrayans more than the average ethiopians. No surprise will come to them even if the beast in you turns against their existence. Swallow your threat and be concerned about the wonderful ethiopia rather than threatening people who got nothing to lose. Dont be a fool.

    there is no ethiopia without tigray both of you need to read ethiopian history i had a lot of respect for tigray peopel they are big part of the ethiopian history. but if you guys want to talk about weyane i like to be a part of it ethiopia never been these much divided on ethnic line sinc us far us i remember. even during the fashist mengistu government .but for the first time we all wittnesed the ethiopia we knew has been chenged the country has been divided such called killel[apparthet]bantuism .the resone some how if they divied the peopel their time on power will be longer. that was the idea they dont care for tigray or ethiopia ingeneral. wait and see when the time come they take all the money they can find and come in the U.S lived comfortble life

  13. Here is one concern.

    It is about Ethiopians living in countries like USA and UK for a long period of time and now may not be loyal to Ethiopia.
    It is about Ethiopians who hold key positions within the diaspora opposition and work for western agencies as informants and agents.
    There is suspicion that they are one key reason why the opposition was not successful the last 21 years. If we take the US for example, the government in Ethiopia is its client and if it wants it can limit or end the activities of opposition forces acting on its soil. It can say “Mr. X, you are acting against the national security interest of the United States. Please stop that (or we will denaturalise you and send you back to your country of origin)”. That works against everyone opposed to the US client regime in Ethiopia and residing in the US.
    The US can also compel those opposing forces holding key positions to work for it, etc.
    This problem should not be ignored. And if we want to remove the US client regime in Ethiopia from power we have to find solutions for those problems.

  21. to be honest Amharas are the casues of all curses to Ethiopia. They admit this before they talk of ethiopiawinet. They are uselesss and have nothing to boast but keep on bragging and insulting others-these have completelyd estroyed ethiopia. If they do not admit this and turn from their evils, Ethiopia will be at risk. Now no one trusts them-they make all sorts of noise of ethiopiawinet but does never work. What matters most and genuine is when their heart changes to realise that all people in Ethiopia are beautiful and deserve grattitude and adoration. Indeed, they are loosers and beggars and embarassement to ethiopia becasue we all bear the consequence becasue of them and yet they never admit their wrong doing and rather they make it worse. They are people who lack dignity and integration and morality. They gave inhuman derogatory names to all other ethnic groups and now it is firing back to them as all the derogatories are turning to them. I totall disagree with this.and it is a lie. But if they are not careful and reverse the situations, it is firing back on them… Now in Ethiopia Amhara means embarassing and shame. Manyeven hide to reveal being Amhara.
    All what I want to say is let us change our mind and see each other as resepctful, beautiful and most powerful and able.
    Unless the AMhara change their mindset, Ethiopia is continuing along the divisive ethnic lines.

  24. Decades ago,a group of robbers evaded community and raided a bank which was located in a vicinity of a church on the east side.All the robbers were killed but Meles Zinawi,the man, who planned,organized,and lead the robbery mistriously escaped death.

    Today,this the same bloody robber is the chief mafia boss in the same criminal organization that he founded after having walked off normal life.It requires to make a decision for the leaders who represent their government and people in the G-8 summit to not hand shake with this notrious murderer,Meles Zinawi because this insane criminal has been a fugitive since decades.
