The Ethiopian girl who was beaten by Lebanese men died

We are shocked and terribly sad to learn that the Ethiopian girl who we saw on a video over the weekend being attacked and kidnapped by Lebanese men in front of the Ethiopian embassy has died this morning. She was fighting for her life as she was beaten and dragged into a car. How can it be said she committed suicide? She was murdered.

BEIRUT (DailyStar) — The Ethiopian woman whose beating outside her country’s consulate was widely publicized on video committed suicide Wednesday morning, Ethiopia’s consul general in Lebanon confirmed to The Daily Star.

Alem Dechasa, 33, hanged herself using her bed sheets between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., Ethiopian General Consul Asaminew Debelie Bonssa said doctors told him. He spoke to The Daily Star while returning from the hospital Psychiatrique de la Croix Hospital, known as Deir al-Salib. Police took her to the hospital after the incident.

The video released by LBCI last week showed Dechasa moaning as a man, later identified as Ali Mahfouz, beat her and forced her into a car. According to Bonssa, who said Dechassa was in Lebanon illegally, the incident took place two weeks prior to its release. Mahfouz said Dechasa had previously attempted suicide.

Bonssa said he saw Dechasa Saturday and she appeared fine. Bonssa also said doctors told him they checked on her at 5 a.m. this morning and when they returned at 6 a.m. she was dead.

Bonssa said he was “deeply shocked” by the news.

The hospital declined to comment, citing privacy concerns.

  1. It is a shocking news. What is the role of our diplomats abroad, is it to cry with us together and continue with their luxury life with out doing something to save the lives of our fellow weak citizens in the middle east or close their offices and stop the diplomatic relations?

AlJazeera — An Ethiopian domestic worker in Lebanon who was filmed being physically abused in public has committed suicide, local media have reported.

The video, first aired by Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation International (LBCI) last week, caused outrage by showing a man abusing Alem Dechasa as she cried on a street outside the Ethiopian embassy in Beirut.

The man was shown grabbing Dechasa and telling her, “get into the car” while she screamed out, “no, no, no”. Another man then assisted in dragging Dechasa into the back of a car as she struggled to resist.

Asaminew Debelie Bonssa, Ethiopian general consul in Lebanon, told The Daily Star newspaper in Beirut that Dechasa committed suicide by hanging herself early on Wednesday morning at a psychiatric hospital where she had been taken after the incident.

Bonssa told The Daily Star that he had seen Dechasa on Saturday in the hospital and that she was making plans to return to Ethiopia.

    ‘Larger issue’

After the video was aired, LBCI used the car’s license plate number to identify the man.

“[The man] tried to justify his act by denying that he beat her. He stressed that the worker tried to commit suicide more than once, and that he tried dealing with her humanely, but she refused to go to the airport for deportation,” LBCI reported on its website.

Activists in Lebanon, outraged by the video, posted the man’s contact information on internet social media sites and called for action against him.

Reports of domestic worker abuse are widespread, with many allegedly locked in employers’ homes.

Rola Abimourched, programme co-ordinator at KAFA (Enough) Violence and Exploitation, told Al Jazeera that Dechasa’s case may increase scrutiny into the problem.

“This case may indicate the larger issue of migrant domestic workers’ vulnerability to abuse in Lebanon, which puts the whole system in question. Namely, the sponsorship system which ties the domestic worker to one employer and does not guarantee her basic human rights,” Abimourched said.

“We hope that an investigation into her death will determine what happened.”

  3. It is indeed very sad. I am extremely angry right now and feel like go outside and punch every arab that comes my way. Of course it is wrong to assume every arab is responsible but they need to cleanup their horrific culture of their mistreatment to women in general and our citizens in particular.
They are barbaric and we need to force them live like a human being they are.

    Ranya replies:

Please reframe from using “every arab” or referring to all Arabs as barbaric. What happened to Alem Dechasa is a tragedy and should never occurred. I am arab and am extremely outraged by these actions and hope to put pressure on the Lebanese government in order to bring some justice to such a terrible situation. But it would be good if you did the same thing with yours.

    Anonymous replies:

Please, don’t tell me that this is an isolated tragedy. It happened
in Lebya. Bharhan, and kwait. Most of the Arab countries use Ethiopian
girls as slave and sexual abuse. If you said that did not took place
you are living in different world. But I can blame the Ethiopian consulate and the government do nothing when she dragged and pushed
in the car. It is a shame and disgusting for the Ethiopian as well
    as the government.

    Hirut replies:

Ranya, I take your point but you cannot shy away from cruelity being an issue in the arab world. This is not an isolated case-it just happens to be caught on camera. There are thousand of girls raped, abused and even killed in the Arab world every so often. Not to mention the daily insult and cruel treatment in the hands of arabs, therefore it is legimate to adress this as a specific cultural prblem of arabs. It is prevelant amongst you. Instead, what you can do is campagin openly about it. Reject it loudly and aspire to change it. you may make a difference.

    Anonymous replies:

iam arab and muslim and very angry and upset but also you have to acknowledge that you have problem whith the desposit ruler in ethiopia, realy you need revolution, because the problem is, ethiopians are humilated and repressed specially women inside their country, me myself i see so many ethiopin girls very small age working as housmaid they have no education and very poor people exploit them

    Anonymous replies:

sir, it can not be a pretext…i mean being uneducated shouldn’t allow you to kill innocent people. you can send them back to their poor country to live as they did and if there is any problem you are seeing, their is a consulate to talk to. this is great stupidity. do you konw what killing a christian mean you Arab Guys?

    we hate you so much,

    azeb

  4. The tigre invader gov. is more than happy when the country’s citizen humiliated and murdered elsewhere. He may reward the murderer. There is no ethiopian embassy, but the tigre embassy around the world i do not know why they call it ethiopian embassy. I do not know how long such humailation can contnue under the tplf.

    Anonymous replies:

I completly agreed on Yetigre Mekera’s response. The current brutal dictator, Meles does not seem to care if Ethiopians die of violence, hunger or thirst. …. He is making them slaves for Arabs, Indians etc in another country. If the woman was Tigre, she would have received a lot of attentions. I have never seen a president who hates his own people.

  5. KONY12, the less than 30 minutes video about the “invisible children” of Uganda widely viewed on Internet estimated 100 million people around the world. KONY is the African Osama Bin Laden with no many on his head. We will see if this man will be apprehended in 2012 as is promised by the producers of the video. However, there is another video of less than three minutes that is widely viewed in the Ethiopian Diaspora on the weekend. The video of defenseless Ethiopian woman beaten up on Lebanon street to be loaded to car like merchandise by thugs. She resisted them to be thrown to hospital and the worst news of her death came this morning.

Al Jazeera reported quoting one good for nothing Woyane Cadre that she hanged herself in a psychiatric hospital. The Ethiopian Mafia in Beirut failed to protect her. Shame on him and all who were hiding behind the door while the thugs torture her. The Ethiopian Mafia in the Middle East are the profiteers from kickbacks of sponsoring housemaids for barbaric house masters.

Now we know her name after death. Alem Dechasa is a daughter maybe a mother, aunt or sister in law for one poor Ethiopian family. The poverty that sent her to make money in Lebanon ended up in tragedy. How long our sisters should be treated as money making machine for Woyane Regime who is colluding with their abusers barbarism not to lose business.

Alem Dechasa’s only crime is coming to Lebanon to make some money for her poor family back in Ethiopia. The poverty and death she run away finally caught her in a very tragic way. If she had been beaten back home at least there were family members to run for her defense. There was no one on Beirut street that day for our sister. I am crying at this moment for let her down !!!.

The least I could have done for her was to protect her from the heavy blow she endured that day. I wish I should take that blow for her. There was no one for her that will be a shame for all of us we call ourselves Ethiopians. Our men the defender of family honor failed her. Our sisters did not call for help, no one say “Ou Ou”, it was only her fainted voice we heard while the Arab thugs jump on her.

These cowards and the Woyane representative both are responsible for what happened to Alem Dechasa. Alem is now a symbol of Barbarism against Ethiopian women in the Arab World. I would like to make it clear that the case of Alem Dechasa is not closed even after her death. Independent body has to investigate how she came to Lebanon and all she met while in Lebanon until her death.

There is no one to speak on her behalf and she died with her secrets of abuse and torture. We watched the glimpse of her story thanks to the people who made the footage public. What happened after that until her death is still not known. The Ethiopian Mafia in Beirut has no credibility to speak on her behalf and we demand international women organizations to send their team and come with a report on Alem Dechasa. she is our Visible Woman for the many Invisible Ethiopian housemaids in Middle East.

If there is anything to learn from her death it is now not tomorrow. Many Ethiopian maids return to their home country in body bags if they are lucky. Some whereabouts have been unknown and no one bother to find. This modern day slavery can only be defeated first and foremost if the Diaspora Ethiopian Women take this fight to the doors of Arab Embassies who are torturing and killing our sisters.

Enough is Enough !!!! Let the March in the name of Alem Dechasa begins in Lebanon Embassies all over the world. Abusing of Ethiopian women has been possible because Ethiopian women have no one to speak on their behalf. We are their defenders !!! The so called Ethiopian Council is part of the problem because it is profiting from shipping our ladies for money. It is all about the money generation of our women while they are under captivity.

Sister Alem Dechasa forgive us for not coming to your defense. We will make sure that your name will be read together with Yenesew Gebre who was martyred on 10/11/11 rather than being humiliated in his own village. You preferred to take your own life after being publicly humiliated by the thugs in the Lebanon. We will not rest until justice served

  6. This made me cry with no stop. When does our abusers and beaters will be brought to justice? She hanged herself? Go tell such a lie to the fools of the world. We know she was killed.
May God rest her soul in peace and avenge her wrongdoers.
Cry Motherland. Your children are the salves of the world thrown out like a refuse around the globe.
    When does this misery end?

  7. I am soooo angry, sad, shocked…..How many more have to suffer before we wake up and say…Enough is Enough!!! Shame on The Ethiopian Government specially the Consulate General in Lebanon. R.I.P my sister.

  8. There is a clear cover-up here.

    1. Why did they take her to psychiatry hospital after the incidence (dragged on the street)?

    2. If indeed, she had a mental issue and was sent to psychiatry unit for observation, she should be protected from injuring herself and others as the psychiatry unit is equipped for this purpose. How then she did committed suicide in the safest place?

I think, she was taken to psychiatry unit( for cover-up) and was strangulated there. Those cadres, in Ethiopian consulate publicly announced her death as suicide without evidence.

  9. Both Eritreans and Ethiopians are experiencing unthinkable minus-human treatments out side their countries. Bothe governments are responsible for contributing they youn to continue flee thier nations and end up in miseary. After the decline of Mengustu most of us anticipated things will be better for the two ppl, but thanks to the irrisponsible leaders and thier pupets we end up this way. Hope one day God will turn his face twards us and listen to our prayers and start enjoy life in our own respective countries fearlessly.

    Anonymous replies:

Who cares about Eriterians. To me Tigians and Eriterians are all the same. I do not trust them at all. They both want to destroy Ethiopia by all means, you should not forget that at one point they ( Meles and Afework were friens, they wanted us to hate each other and stay dependent, ignorant and poor and evntually eliminate Ethiopia from the world map, so if you want to talk, say only about your own country. Don’t mention about others’ problem. Eriterians can tackle their own issues. ….

you should blaming the government not to the entire ethiopian tigrina speaker even if am not tigrna speaker.think twice sister.

    Ras replies:

Am surprise about the foolish comment given by Rahle.
you thing Hayle Slasie or Mengustu leadership was fine ?
may be it was good for you and you family but not for all ethiopain
    people.

  10. Do we know any thing else about Alem? her family in case she contacted them about her concern? where she was when this happened? Why she was there? Why were these men doing this to her? if Mr. Bonssa seen her what did he talk to her about her concern? and what did she say to him? Their embassy in DC, Bonssa office, LBC TV, and her abuser should be asked for this information. Egzeabher nebsuan begenet yasarif!

  11. i have a question. How can she kill her self in a hospital where there are many people moving here and there ? Shame on you the so called councile of ethiopia. R.I.P sister.

    Yonis replies:

    They kill her…..Thats it.
One day they will pay the price.

  12. Woyanne is back-tracking to fight back about false reports on the plane crash in Lebanon as it is selling us and our land to the Arabs. By the same token, they conspired with the fucken Arabs to silence us about the incidence against Ms. Alem by removing her forever so that she will not be interviewed or accuse any. What is our response? Going infront of Lebanon’s embassy to shout for few minutes and forget it!!! We do the same thing (lining up in front of woyanne , American or European embassies) when woyanne makes plenty of abuses to us. When I conclude on our fighting style in the past, I say we deserve it all. Our forefathers and foremothers did not take such an abuse as history (story) tells us, but go to the bushes after satifying their revenge. Think about that!!!

    Ras replies:

Please try to give positive comment something to unite us not to divide us. Don’t forget one thing every ethiopian who ever his ethnic has a right to lead the country.

    Yigermal replies:

Feri what are you doing about it? Why don’t you tell us or advice us what to do I staid of crying about what people did ?

  13. I am 1 of ethiopian girls in middlest. We dont have any info whats going on in our country as well around z world cos we are not allowed to watch tv or listen to a radio. Right now am readin n writin this coment thru my hidden cell phone,we cant go outside alone,it feels like we r in prison.sumday when they found out that i have celphone,i know whats wil gon’ happen to me. They r damaging our mind Pls do sumtin about it.let there be a rule each and every single domestic worker to fullfill their needs! May b 2morow wil be my turn like the same as Alem. But Am happy n lucky at least i can tell to my ppl these lines thru my hidden celphone.WE NEED FREEDOM!WE NEED FAIR JUSTICE! TODAY NOT TOMORROW!!!! R .I.P my beloved sister!

    Lema replies:

I feel really bad reading your story and the way things are. However, you did not mention how you end up coming to the place you are in and how long you are going to stay. I am sure money is the motivating factor for you to go there and be treated like slave

So it is as far as, the Ethiopian government is concerned and they have qa contract to sell 45,000 women to Saudi Arabia. Though it is easy to say I understand or I know, fact is there is no way to understand or know unless people like you give us some gleams. Good luck and hope you will be able to eventually see your families

    Hirut replies:

Dear sister, glad you got this opportunity to contact us. please be strong and know that you all are loved by your fellow Ethiopians around the globe. I cannot promise you anything but I do one thing. We are going to stand up againist this brutality together. Ideally, the first advice is go back to your country. don’t be scared to go to your country, at least you have your dignity. Pls tell everyone that. no matter what, you can sell kolo on the street and make money if the worst come, pls don’t see that as an insult, not at all. In order to be domestic workers, you don’t have to go to that shit hole! Be a domestic worker at home at least you are with your people who you can reason with. Here is the big problem. There is this fantacy of going abroad to make dollars, but in this condition? why oh why? Secondly stay strong mentally. Don’t let those morons belittle you. They are not humans. Don’t worry about sending money to anybody back home. Keep your money if you have to your self and do something for you back home. Enough is Enough. Why is it our responsiblility to support every lazy sod in our family. And unite, be strong and keep in touch through such forums. Wish you all the best ahead. Your pain is our pain. Strong advice go back, with you mind and life in tact. Don’t worry about any thing. just go.

    Concern replies:

Are u there? I hope u are staying strong. Today not Tommorow.

  14. We should revange by killing at least those stupid Arabs came to harvest rice in gambella and by burning down their crop on the field….I don’t expect any good measure from this beggar tigre government. Weyne edilachin! .

  15. It is so sad that we are witnessing our sister being brutalized. I is more sickening if we “Ethiopians” are not taking any action necessary to stop this crazy murder. We must stand together to bring the person who committed this crime to justice. We need to mobilize ourselves and bring it to the attention of the Embassy of Lebanese from wherever we are.

  16. This is a sad story. This is the reflection of the tragic history of today’s Ethiopia. ‘Yefukirk bet sayzega yaderal’. We Ethiopians spend endless argument hating each other based on tribal, national and religious differences. We have a distorted history of ourselves and our country. The governments spend billions of dollars, purchasing sophisticated arms to kill ourselves and our neighbors in Somalia and Eritrea, and many of us clap without asking any question. We believe Eritrean and Somalis are our mortal enemies. So we believe that and allow the governments to keep fighting, while we starve and remain unemployed and have force ourselves to live as refugees in such hostile countries all over the world. ‘Wedesh ketedefash biregtush aykfash’. The solution to our problem is at home. We need to identify our real enemies and friends, before we accuse others who and why they mistreat us. If we do not respect ourselves at home we cannot expect others to respect us and treat us with dignity abroad. We need to identify those who are selling our lands and our sisters and mothers left and right, who keep us ignorant and drag us to endless wars at home and abroad, treat us as secondhand citizens, based on lies, who denied us to live and die in dignity in our country. Let God give us mercy and the wisdom to know the truth and love one another.

  17. Ho!!! Mama Ethiopia your citzen suffer all over the world.Mali,Kenya, uganda,Somalia,Yemen,Libya, and most Arab country, Norway,Japan and many more , Mama pray to God save your children they suffer another country like they dont have country.God bless her soul our sister Alem.

  18. Shame on us, we are the most shameful generation Ethiopia ever had. Our goverment ships our sisters via Ethiopia airlines to be raped and beaten by Arabs. Now even after we saw the picture she being dragged in front of the illegal and the embassy of the criminals, the criminal embassy is telling us she has died. Why the Embassy did not took her and console her and returned her or help her to save her life. What she can do? she lost hope. Her Compatriots were supposed to take her and console her. But the criminal embassy once again put her in the racists hospital. I do believe she being killed. I cannot even believe she died by herself. My heart is broken really.

Shame on us , shame on us.

  19. Pl/s ecadforum you have the right to filtrate their news;I don’t believe it was suicide. No one was with her to confirm she did that.So you can’t write:”Maid in Lebanon abuse video kills herself.”
    Just think once…

  20. What a tragedy and a nightmare! She cried for help and nobody came to rescue her. Oh! My poor sister! My heart aches for her, her parents, siblings, the rest of her family and to all Ethiopians who have been denied justice in and outside of Ethiopia, for the last 21 years. Her wounds and bruises must had been horrific for the rest of the world to see. This poor girl was murdered, so she won’t testify against these soulless evil men. How could a girl that had been beaten badly and hospitalized, could have the energy to commit suicide? Not only that Arab thug, Meles and his puppet Ambassador in Lebanon are also responsible for her death. OMG! it is hard to comprehend, how another humans can be this much cruel. Too many unkind and heartless people like Adolf Hitler still walk around in Arab countries and in Ethiopia. Heartbreaking indeed!

  21. Totally unacceptable that ; on top of all the things that could have been done to prevent this young lady’s premature death; that she died in a hospital which is meant to have looked ater her .

It is completely unaccepatble to have been failed my the medical team in addition to all the other systems that the young lady had been failed by.

  22. Anbabi, don’t include Eritrea in the discussion. Eritreans don’t go to Arab countries through agents who are the number one problem. If there is employment in any country it is the labour union who will study the employment case by case and make a decission. No Eritreans go to Lebanon at this time after an incident many years back.

  23. Death to the barbaric shintam Arabs. May the mighty hand of Israel crash you forever, you retarded barbarians. All Arabs are psychos just like their leaders!

  24. We are colonized by tplf. If this woman was from the USA ,this would not have happened. Get rid of tplf. If this does not trigger our revolution then what. Ethiopian men and women rise up rise up rise up

  25. This is a heart wrenching sad story and I really don’t know what to say except I am mad as hell. The same girl that we watched on YouTube last Saturday, being abused by Lebanese thugs, in front of her unhelpful Embassy is dead now. I am still puzzled by the following:

    1. What was the role of the Consular personnel in all this? We know that, somehow Alem managed to elude her abusers, and was able to reach the Consulate. Did the TPLF minions at the consulate contact Mr. Mahfouz to come and get her?

    2. If she was illegally in Lebanon, isn’t it the duty of Immigration & Law Enforcement to deport her?

    3. Why did Ali and friends got involved in her deportation process?

4.Was Ali using the threat of deportation on Alem to submit to his abuses and tortures (we have heard that most abusive employers hide the passports of these poor girls and threaten to have them deported if they complain to the police)?

    5. Now the psychiatric hospital: If she has attempted suicide before, shouldn’t she be on a suicide watch? Shouldn’t the hospital do everything to prevent her from harming herself? Shouldn’t the hospital keeping her in a room where can’t hang herself no matter what?

My prayers and condolence go to her family and friends.
    RIP Alem!

  26. I am sitting here and crying wondering when is Ethiopian government going to do something right and help our people instead of killing them??? Rest in peace our beautiful sister I know you went to a better place but you didn’t deserve to go the way you did. Much love!! Those Lebanese assholes deserve to burn in hell!!!

  27. Death to the enemy! Death to Hiwhat!!! Death! Death! to the enemy that has been eating our children alive!!!

Ehtiopians, tears only are not enough. Let us renew our committment to take our common enemy and Zinawi’s regime more seriously and accelerate our struggle aginst the enemy and bring freedom to all our childern, both at home and in the middle east.

Ethiopians, take a pause and think just for a minute, and ask, what else the enemy will do to the rest of our children? We are losing our sisters trafically and nursing broken hearts year after year, month after month, hours by hours, and days by days.We can not list names of our sisters who lost their lives because it is too many to count. Our common enemy is now on its 21st year since it invaded the homeland and began distroying the lives of Ethiopians all ages, and it does not seem the enemy stop murdering our sisters,in particular.

Ethiopians,as an individuals or in a group, list all your options and choose on the best and the most ones and act effective immediately on your chosen option and make history to all those who lost their priceless lives.

    Down with the enemy!!!!

    Victory to all Ethiopians!!!

We shall retaliate our common enemy with victory! Amen.

  28. Ethiopians, the loss of or dear sister means a shame on us because we failed not only this sister of ours, the previous ones who lost their dearest life tragically. When our helpless sister said,”NO No No and No” it meant for us,her brothers and sisters to come to her saving.we didn’t;rather,we cried in silence and comfort our aching hearts;we somehow have gathered our energy and are doing okay, but not our loving sister.Yes,she’s gone and is away from her motherland and Millions of Ethiopians, but she will always live in hour broken hearts. We shall punish the enemy to the fullest and to its eternal death.

YOu see Ethiopians, when we are crying and our heart bleed, the enemy is taking joy as if it has defeated us; the enemy did nothing while our sister was being dragged like a dead camel on the street into a car that was parked to take her away into the unknown. She courageously resisted her abductors by doing the best she could.

Well,we will continue bearing the cost, but the enemy that refused to leave our homeland will pay the grand price.

  29. This is really unbelievable. A woman whom we watched fighting for her life comitted suicide in a hospital? Do these people think we Ethiopians are fool to accept thier story? Well, what to expect from Arabs who take our land and become masters of our people. There is more to come unders TPLF dictatorship, more humilation.

  30. The solution to our problem is ……” weyane free Ethiopia” . And to free Ethiopia from weyane ! ?

    We can contribute $ 1 / day which is $ 365 / year .

    $ 365 / year times 100,000 of us is 36.5 Million / year

or times 1,000,000 of us is 365 Million / year .

Imagine what this can do for ethiopian fighters .

Let us stop from being cry baby . ” Wake up , Organize , Use the power of money to fight .

The next time you see $ 1 ( less than coffee $ ) in your pocket , know it could have freed Ethiopia !

Otherwise , SHUT THE HELL UP ! .

P.S. My uncle told me how the Eritreans gave all their money in 70 ties …(some even gave their lives)

right here from the washington dc area .

I asked him what about you ? ……. well he said …. Kitfona gored gored manyiblaw .

It is sad what happened to her … at least she tried to fight back .

As for us we are dying from Kitfo , gored gored , …. shame on us !

    samuel replies:

    And so is Ethiopia !

  31. The Arabs first humilated her, and then they killed her because a dead person can not bear witness. she did not kill herself. They killed her to hide their crimes. This is an insult to every black person.
Why is this happening to Ethiopians and Eritreans in the Arab world? Why are Arabs so disrespectful to Ethiopians and Eritreans? Ethiopians and Eritreans does not face this level of Arab racism in other African nations such as Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan or South Africa but the Arabs treatus all like dogs, why?
why is the Arab world this level evil to Ethiopians and Eritreans?
is it yewedeqe zaf metrebya ybezabetal? situation?
In my view both Isaias and Meles are responsible for our debasement infront of the selfish Arabs

  32. THIS IS A TRAGEDY! I AM INTRIGUED ABOUT THE WHOLE SITUATION, I AM CURIOUS! THIS GIRL WAS BRUTALLY DRAGGED IN THE STREET. SHE WAS THEN PUT IN A PSYCHIATRY HOSPITAL. A FEW DAYS LATER SHE WAS ANNOUNCED TO HAVE COMMITTED “SUICIDE”. HERE ARE THE CURIOUS POINTS ABOUT THE WHOLE SITUATION:
    (1) WHY WAS SHE PUT IN A PSYCHIATRY HOSPITAL IN THE FIRST PLACE, SHE WAS A NORMAL PERSON REMOVED FROM HER HOME AND DRAGGED IN THE STREET. WAS IT NOT A NORMAL THING TO RETURN HER TO WHERE EVER SHE WAS FORCIBLY REMOVED UNTIL THE CASE WAS SORTED OUT.
    (2) WHEN A CITIZEN OF A COUNTRY ENCOUNTERED SUCH A TRAGIC SITUATION, THE MOST NORMAL THING FOR AN EMBASSY OFFICIAL TO SAY WOULD TO BE CURIOUS AND PROBE INTO THE SITUATION SURROUNDING THE DEATH, PARTICULARLY WHEN THE DEATH HAPPENED A FEW DAYS AFTER AN ATTACK OPENLY IN PUBLIC. HOWEVER, THE ETHIOPIAN EMBASSY OFFICIAL WAS QUICK TO EFFECTIVELY BLAME THE DEAD GIRL BY SAYING: (A) SHE WAS THERE ILLEGALLY IN THE FIRST PLACE IMPLYING THAT IT WAS HER FAULT FOR WHATEVER HAPPENED TO HER; (B) THE GIRL HAS A HISTORY OF ATTEMPTING SUICIDE. THIS CONTRASTS WITH THE REACTION OF THE LEBANON PUBLIC, INCLUDING THE CABINET DISCUSSING THE MATTER. THE KEY POINT IS THIS – WHY IS THE ETHIOPIAN EMBASSY OFFICIAL SOUNDED SO INSENSITIVE TO THE ISSUE?

THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THE DEATH OF ALEM SOUNDS DUBIOUS, IT REQUIRES SCRUTINY. IT IS A BIG NATIONAL ISSUE WHICH ETHIOPIAN HOME AND ABROAD SHOULD PUSH FOR DIGGING OUT THE TRUTH! FIRST AND FOREMOST THE ETHIOPIAN EMBASSY OFFICIAL IN LEBANON SHOULD CLARIFY HIS POSITION, WHY WAS SO QUICK TO PASS JUDGEMENTS WITHOUT WAITING TO GATHER FACTS SURROUNDING THE DEATH?

    Hirut replies:

Dear Bonsa, indeed, why was the Embassy man quick to blame her.

    Three explaination.

    1. He just happens to be there through his political connection. No background in deplomacy career. Even if, ( a big if) what he says was true, an embassy simply does not blame its dead citizen especially one who died in such brutal curcumstances. It is unheard of in the history of diplomacy.

    2. Blaming the victim implies, one failure to protect a citizen who is in danger in a foreign land, mind you, the the day before the beating he stated he saw the girl and she appeared fine to him.

    3. The crucial question remain, who are these traffickers? they did not suddenly invade Ethiopia from thin air. Judging by the number of girls being exported to slavary and prostitution everyday to the Middle East, raises the question, how do they manage to process them at Immigration, do they have connection with government officials? No stone should be left unturned on this issue. Enough is enough. We cannot sit back and watch when our fellow sisters are being exported to modern day slavary. Organise, campaign, enquire get petition signed. No point in crying. We need to do something about this.

  33. First of, I feel sorry for the family of Alem. May the Almighty give you strength and comfort at this trying time. Otherwise, we should stop blaming the goverment every time some kind trajic happens to our fellow citizen. This is happening because we are not united. There is division within the church, community organizations and so forth. We should take Alem’s case to sit down and come up with a formula on how we should protect our citizens. If we have to work with the Embassy then let it be it. The sad thing is, when these arab vagabonds come to our country we welcome them with a red carpet. Enough is enough! Let us do something now.

  34. This is a tragedy! I am intrigued about the whole situation, i am curious! This girl was brutally beaten and dragged in the street. She was then put in a psychiatry hospital. A few days later she was announced to have committed “suicide”. Here are the curious points about the whole situation:
    (1) Why was she put in a psychiatry hospital in the first place, she was a normal person dragged from her home and dragged in the street. Was it not a normal think to return her to where ever she was forcibly removed until the case was sorted out.
    (2) When a citizen of a country encountered such a tragic situation, a responsible Embassy official would be curious and he would probe into the situation surrounding the death; particularly when the death happened a few days after a vicious attack openly in public. However, the Ethiopian Embassy official was quick to effectively blame the dead girl by saying:
    (a) She was there illegally in the first place any way; implying that it was her fault for whatever happened to her;
    (b) The girl has a history of ATTEMPTING TO COMMIT SUICIDE. This contrasts with the reaction of the Lebanon public, including the cabinet discussing the matter. The key point is this – why is the Ethiopian embassy official sounded so insensitive to the issue?
The circumstances surrounding the death of Alem sound dubious – so it requires scrutiny. It is a big national issue – Ethiopian home and abroad should push for digging out the truth! First and foremost the Ethiopian Embassy official in Lebanon should clarify his position, why was so quick to pass judgements without waiting to gather facts surrounding the death?

  35. Her life could have been spared if we had a sympathetic and responsible consulate office unlike what we currently have “a puppet.’’ What else could this poor girl have done to save her life? She did what she could, run and yelled for the fucken consulate to come for a rescue? Oh no, why wouldn’t they?? Why would they care?? She is just a domestic worker!
I am so disgusted and aggravated by the iniquity actions of these inhuman citizens, above all I am so embarrassed by the helpless the so called “the consulate office”
It is very morbid to witness someone begging for help and nobody seems to care.
My condolences to her family and you can rest in peace now.

  36. what’s wrong with you people every time tragedy hit people throw politices. why is it??? let us feed our people first before you talks politices. I feel sorry for her family this is sad story. our people die left and right while they try to find a place to live peacefully. and yet you all talk politices. as far i concern hell to TPLF & Shabia. those two parasites destroy the two nation. why as people can live peacefull and happy. that why we will never grow as a nation.
    one love

Remember there are more of us in the diaspora who can do this …… AND MORE !

  37. WHAT A HEARTBREAKING NEWS…IT HAPPENED BECAUSE OF SOME EGOISTS…FOR THOSE WHO ARE LEADING ETHIOPIA I WOULD SAY EVERYONE IS CREATED IN THE IMAGE OF GOD THUS LET US GIVE THE MUXIMUM OF OUR SERVICE TO SECURE EVERY INDIVIDUAL.

  38. Am so fuming knowing that she didn’t kill her self.if they r an animal enough to beat her up like that the least they can do is admit they killed her.may her soul rest in peace.

  39. This is absolutely disgusting, inhumane, and disrespectful for any one to be dragged on the street and beaten up in front of their country’s embassy. This innocent hard working sister and daughter of ours did not go there to have fun, but she went there to earn a living and help her relatives back home in Ethiopia.

Alem Dechasa is not the only victim, many of them before her faced the same fate in the hands of the brutal Arab women and men as well. The only thing that makes this one different is that the mistreatment she went through is captured on the video and aired for the world to watch and witness the cruelty of the Lebanese society towards foreign domestic workers.

I am also appalled by the behavior of the Ethiopian consulate. Ambassador Asaminew could have done better job, and stood his ground in defending and protecting that innocent woman rather than letting them snatch her away by force. So why is the Ethiopian Embassy there in the first place if it does not provide sanctuary when the life of an Ethiopian is at a stake. Could Ambassador Asaminew have done differently if Alem was the daughter of one the Ethiopian ruling elites. Yes, I bet you he could have.

Last year Ethiopian Air plane carrying many of our citizens blew up over the Mediterranean Sea, few minutes after taking off from Beirut Air port. The Lebanese government then blamed the incident on the Ethiopian pilot, as lacking experience. How in the world can they say things like that to a pilot who had 20 plus years of experience under his belt. They show no respect for the Ethiopian people. They even refused to allow the Ethiopian inspectors to have access to the Black Box to find out the truth about the Airplane’s mid air explosion. Why does all this has to happen on a daily basis without any retaliation from the Ethiopian government?

I am sure if the Ethiopian government had taken firm stand against any nation who mistreats its citizens and destroys its property ( the air plane ), the repetition of this latest incident would have been averted.

May be the Lebanese government from past incident came to the conclusion that the Ethiopian government doesn’t care that much about its citizens who are engaged in a menial job.

Regardless of the kind of job they are doing Ethiopian citizens need to be defended and protected from any type of assault any where in the world. We all know if a Lebanese citizen is chased, beaten and dragged in front of any Arab Embassies here in Ethiopia, the whole Arab world would go to war with Ethiopia for humiliating and mistreating its citizens .

The Ethiopian Embassies in the Middle Eastern countries should wake up and start defending and protecting its citizens regardless of their socioeconomic background, and the sophistication of their job skills. When any Ethiopian national is dragged in the street and beaten up in front of Ambassador Asaminew’s nose ( Ethiopian Embassy compound), that shows disrespect to the Ambassador and to the 80 plus million Ethiopian population.

Ambassador Asaminew could have given Alem a sanctuary inside the embassy compound and protected her from her assailants. Had he done that Alem would have been alive today. Asaminew failed not only Alem , but he failed all Ethiopians who looked up to him for his protection and his continuous involvement until the situation becomes under control.

This being a very unfortunate lesson to learn , I hope Ethiopian Ambassadors in the future have to work hard in full capacity to defend and protect equally all its nationals any where in the world, regardless of their ethnicity, and their socioeconomic background.

  40. It hearts very much. I could not to believe Ethiopians suffer like that outside their country. In Ethiopia, things were the same during 1985-1995.The Ethiopian civil workers, working outside their own region: Amara, Oromo and other developing regions; workers were beaten by the natives and cadres. Similarly, it happened for the Ethiopian woman, Alem Dechasa, beaten outside her country by Lebanon man. And, the consulate was looking the incident without helping the Ethiopian girl. What is our moral and nationality question to the Ethiopian government? Later than to day I declared that I do not have country ,I do not have a national flag ,I do not call myself as Ethiopian until I see a meaning full response taken by Ethiopian government against Lebanon. This is not the only cause in Morocco, Libya, Saudi Arabia, quart and in all Muslim countries, including Somalia and Eretria the same thing happened but, not exposed like Lebanon .all these sabotages are done under the close instruction of the Eritrean and Eritrean diaspora networks against Ethiopian outside the Africa. The network is consists of the Somalian and other Ethiopian foolish young members outside Africa. These evil works are the hand work of the Somalian and the Eritrean. Please, Ethiopian aware and awake! Be uniting the diaspora community to help the Ethiopian women in the Middle East, people living in Europe and the United State from these Invisible networks.
