Ethiopiawinet in North America is reborn

This past weekend (July 1st – 3rd) the Ethiopian Heritage Society in North America (EHSNA) held a highly successful Ethiopian festival in Washington DC. During the same period, on July 2nd, members and friends of Ethiopian Review gathered to celebrate the journal’s 20th anniversary. I participated in both events and left with a feeling that {www:Ethiopiawinet} has been reborn in North America.

Two days before Ethiopian Review to hold its 20th anniversary event, the Woyanne junta held a televised press conference to falsely accuse me of organizing terrorist activities. It’s clear that Woyanne’s intention was to terrorize people not to attend Ethiopian Review’s event for fear of being accused of supporting a “terrorist.” The propaganda did in fact scared off a few individuals, but the event achieved its objectives, i.e., celebrate our past achievements and recommit ourselves to work harder in the future.

The highlight of Ethiopian Review’s event were the speeches by Artiste Tamagne Beyene and my father, Kifle Seifu. Watch the video below.

Guest speakers included Ato Neamin Zeleke from Timret; Dr Aklog Birara, a senior economist at the World Bank; Ato Masresha Tilahun from Ethiopian National Youth Movement; and Ato Abebe Belew from Addis Dimts Radio.

There was also an auction to raise funds for Ethiopian Review’s 2011 expansion plan.

The event was concluded at 6 PM and most of us went straight to the Ethiopian Festival that was underway at the Georgetown University in Washington DC.

When I arrived there, I could not believe my eyes. The stadium was filled with thousands of people of all ages — from small children to the elderly. I knew the festival would be a great success, but not to this extent in its first year.

As we all know, the Woyanne junta that is currently looting and plundering Ethiopia has been trying to destroy Ethiopiawinet in the Diaspora by infiltrating institutions and turning them into its own political tools. One of its victims was the Ethiopian Sports Federation in North America (ESFNA) that had been hijacked by Woyanne businessman Sheik Al Amoudi. This past weekend, Woyanne’s Diaspora campaign, financed by an annual budget of $40 million, has finally been dealt a major blow. Ethiopiawinet is being revived once again thanks to a group of patriotic Ethiopians who came together to organize such a spectacular event.

At the stadium, I met several Ethiopians from as far as California and Calgary, Canada, who came with their families to participate in the festival. It was a great feeling to spend time with them.

The organizers, led by Dr Shakespeare Feyissa, Ato Tekle Abebe, and Wzr. Meron Ahadu, did a magnificent job that has exceeded every one’s expectation.

The Ethiopia people who have been confused by melse showmanship finally understood the antidote for his clown ship is to unite and uproot this rotten racist government from Ethiopia once and for all. I am very glad to that happening. It is going to be a hard fight but we are now ready to do it. The maturity and the dedication we are seeing from Ethiopian parties is very encouraging.   11. Come on now this is indeed one of those special occasions that will remind us to stop what we are doing and reflect upon what is taking place in our country. The speech by this Elderly Ethiopian is phenomenal it forces us answer the question am I committed to help fight tyrany? After the entire regime is vigorously dehumanizing innocent civilians by falsely charging them in what it calls”terrorists”.Have we not a cause in this to free Ethiopians, by whatever coast? We need to remove fear of our midst and as the Mr.Kefle Seifu, has said we must unite.
    First, we must demand the many splinter opposition parties, UDJ Medihin, EPRP, need to form a single core.Then, we want to see intense discussion and debate with the Oromo political organizations that appear to have diverse views of the future of the country as well as to the rest of movements in order to form a single national umbrella organization. In short, we demand a fruitful discussion to be hold now that will eventually lead us to union. Unity of our people is the proven method to remove the cancer.Once; Ethiopians reach a consensus on the question of unity the western powers immediately will begin to speak in different tone and candor. Then, no matter what weyane says about its military prowess, there is nothing to keep the ruling elite from being dragged out of office. The greatest task ahead is to work towards a united national political party. Our freedom hangs on this central issue, and we demand all leaders across the political spectrum to be sensitive to the growing repression and humiliation of the innocent and act to remedy the problem.

    Your father says “zeregna aydelenim.” There’s no one more zeregna than Menze and all the rest of Shoa Amhara. If he had said “ene pure Tigre negn” you would have had a problem with it, but since he’s your dad, and he’s an Amhara, it’s ok if he says “ene pure Menze negn” – what a hypocrite you are. Anyways, I understand that your dad comes from an era when Amhara’s were the ruling elite, and for people like him, “Ande Itopiya” means Amhara on top while the rest fights for whatever scraps they can get, change their names to Amahra names, change their religion to Ethiopian Orthodox etc and he is stuck in that way of thinking. I am not going to disrespect him like you do when people don’t agree with the way you interpret the world. But people like you, you need to wake up and get with it because gone are the days of this illusion you call “Ande Itopiya.” Itopiya, was never “ande”. When was the last time we had a Gambella King? God bless the Menzes for ever and ever: each and every Ethyopian got that unique and universal love, patriotism and the essence of Ethiopianess from Menzes and Bulgans, where 280 Kidusans (unprecedented number) came out of from.     We have discussed this Amhara issue before, and it is amazing to find some people who do not understand Ethiopia: to belittle Amhara, they write their screen name as Itiyopiawi instead of Ethiopiawi. The real Ethiopians – the Amharas – get very concerned when their country’s name is misspelled. They get very concerned when their land is taken away; they get very concerned when their religion is not properly followed, their flag is changed, and their history is misinterpreted.

    Amharas are still the ruling elite, always at the top, and will remain so for eternity; one must believe without Amharas, there is no Ethiopia, and, without Ethiopia, there will be no Amharas. The Amharas shaped Ethiopia to become a nation; the Amharas Christianized Ethiopia, allowed other people to come and settle in Ethiopia, ruled the country for centuries, administered rule of law, and defended their country from the external and internal enemies.

    The Amharas never forced anybody to change his name to the Amhara name: Gudetta is still Gudetta; Hagos is still Hagos, Ali is still Ali, and Fatima is still Fatima. It is true many Ethiopians have the Amhara names because they want to be seen as civilized as the Amharas. In the old days, the Romans who spoke the Greek language were considered by their community as civilized people. The same is true with some Ethiopians who speak the Amharic language and follow the Amhara religion, culture, and tradition.

    In the Ethiopian history, every body could not be a king; one had to earn it if one wanted to be a king or a queen. Second, one had to be from a royal family to be a king and that was why we had had a continuity of history until His Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie. One can learn a good example from the British Royal Family. Had we stayed with the Ethiopian Royal Family, we wouldn’t face the ugliness of Meles’ dictatorship today in the 21st century.

    The people of Month have been proud Amharas, loyal to their country, to their religion, to their culture and tradition like the other Amhara people in Ethiopia.

    What is zeregna? What does Yamara zer mean? What does Yeoromo zer mean? Zeregna aydelenim means, we don’t discriminate other people who are not from our zer, our race, our tribe, our locality or region. The Amhara people never discriminated anybody because of his zer, color, religion, locality, and ethnicity. They have always shared their governments with other Ethiopian tribes, and that was why there was peace throughout the Amhara Christian Kingdome.

    I don’t think Elias Kifle will have any problem with someone who says: “እኔ ትግሬ ነኝ” or “እኔ ጎጃሜ ነኝ.” This means, the person was born in Tigray or in Gojam, and he has lived there; therefore, if he says he is a Gojame or a Tigray, what is wrong with it? And there is no hypocrisy in whatever Elias Kifle had said before or he is saying now.

    Yes, Ethiopia has been one, never two, never three, never four, but always one Ethiopia; its unity has been respected throughout the world because of its heroes, the Amhara people, and all Ethiopians are Amharas, and because they are Amharas they are undoubtedly Ethiopians. (ገባህ?)

As expected Meles’s lackeys are upset and jumping up and down dancing to their master’s whip how sad it is when one buys into slavery so willingly for a small piece of land or the opportunity to invest in their homeland. Not even understanding that it is their right and that they do not have to sell their soul to the devil.

    Hope is on the horizon and Ethiopia shall rise like the phoenix from the deep ashes and shall shine once again and learn from its past and rebuild a future that will give all its people the pride it once had.

    I also have that hope and believe we all can attain it once we stop allowing the evil forces amongst us from separating us. The call for unity was sounded by our young hero Burtukan. We should rally behind that call to unite to work together respecting our differences working on what makes us Ethiopians and working out and learning to accepts our differences…. What he did not want to accept is the fact that Shewan Amharas never ruled the country alone. Even they wanted, they would not be able to do so. Just look at the composition of Menelik, Iyasu, Zewditu and Haile Selassie’s regimes. Who was Habte Giorgis, Assafe Ayana, Yilma Deresa, Gobena Dache, Lorenzo Taezaz and others who were not Menzes or Shewan Amharas. The only fact that was all Amhara was the language that was used to conduct governmental affairs. What is wrong with that? India uses Hindi and China uses Mandarin as their national mediums. But try to find one prominent member of inner circle from Atse Yohannes regime who was not a Tigreyan. Name one. The history of people from Menz has yet to find an impartial historian who will honestly and truthfully pen it.
    I am proud of my Menzie heritage and my children will do the same.
    Those who hate Menzies are those who have no idea what a Menzie is composed of. We are known in history to be willing to conflate and to have mastered the art of team leadership. That is how we kept the country in one piece even after the Fascist Occupation. Without such group leadership, there was no way such a small locality with a population of a few tens of thousands would be able to establish a rule on tens of millions of people. That is why I call upon qualified historian to put their neutral and fair pens to work and write about my people.

  47. I am overwhelmed with emotion and pride hearing the eloquent elderly proud Ethiopian speak with such precision of what is going on in Ethiopia today. Elias, you should be proud of your father. He is actually our father too, and can be taken as the personification of all proud Ethiopian fathers that kept Ethiopia intact for centuries. If it weren’t for these patriot Ethiopians, there will never be Ethiopia and/or an Ethiopian entity and territorial integrity established. What traitors and bandas like the TPLF don’t realize is that so much sacrifice has been paid to bring about this proud, ancient country to stay as one nation. They never see ethnicity as a way of life, but the glory of Ethiopia as one nation.

It is bad that you entertain such oxymoron idea; yet it is even worst when one feels under obligation to bring to this forum every fleeting thought that come across the mind and attempt to share it with us. The more I read about you; the better I learn how insincere and inconsistent your view is. Very often, you like to engage on highly controversial topics such as religion, ethnic issues, and you spread before us your personal bias and prejudice concerning these issues. Never mind, as often as you like to do just that, I can only hope many will treat your view as outlier

    Many Ethiopians don’t come to these forums with topics intended to polarize participants across the diverse political spectrem, rather, they come with ideas that will educate, unify and with views that will help solve the country’s problem. It is true Tam rat Lynne is from Gondar; you must tell where Addisu is.Beside,the men you referred members of the splinter EPRP that Bereket Simon the sleeping Eretria agent within EPRP was able to highjack their plan, when he convinced them to ally with weyane.Still, the splinter EPRP was representative of the multinational of our citizens. I answer my own question. The people of Gondar fought against weyane for a full two years, after the fall of Gondar, it took less than two month for weyane to capture the capital. The weyanes themselves testify to this truth. They say after the fall of Gondar it was all over. I think you need to revise your conception about the people of Gondar. After all we need to play down this notion of regional politics: Ethiopia is so big we can get lost in the awesome truth of our country that stretches from Assab to Metema and from Moyle to Badame.
