Bureaucracy and the Lemalimo road
American or Ethiopian bureaucracy is like the Lemalimo road. The distance from Debebahir to Debark town is probably less than one hundred miles. Lemalimo is between Debebahir and Debark town, Ethiopia. To cover this short distance by a car from Debebahir to Debark town, it takes almost the whole day because of the Lemalimo serpentine road. One drives on the Lemalimo road a few yards to the right, and a few yards to the left, and a few yards to the right and a few yards to the left again, and again and again; and one drives on and on like this until he reaches to the top of the mountain where fresh air mixed with aromatic smell is in abundance.
Ethiopian bureaucracy is more crocked, twisted or rougher than the Lemalimo road. To accomplish one simple thing, a person has to visit several offices, talk to different bureaucracies, and, at the end of the day, he is told to come back after two or more weeks. He comes back and starts where he was told to come back; he tells to the secretary at the desk that he wants to see the Minister of Education. The secretary tells him after she has talked with her boss that the Minister of Education has a board meeting this hour, and he cannot see him today. He may try next week. Sullen, the man leaves the office of the Ministry of Education and goes home.
After he has waited another week, he returns to the same office, takes a seat, picks up an old newspaper, and glosses over the paper. He doesn’t have to remind the secretary at the counter because she knows him already. Immediately, the secretary tells the man that her boss will be late today and gives him the choice to wait or leave. He chooses to wait. He waits more than five hours, and finally the boss comes in, and without inviting the poor guy to his office, he asks the guy what he wants the boss to do for him. The guy hands the boss a long written note. The boss by reading only the heading without reading the whole note, gives back the note to the guy, telling him to see first the Assistant Ministry of Education, few blocks away from the main office, his office. The guy asks some directions from the secretary at the counter; she helps him with the direction, and wants to talk with him a few minutes more because he was a very handsome guy.
Next day, the guy visits the office of the Assistant Ministry of Education and introduces himself to the old lady at the counter. He tells her he wants to see the Assistant Minister. She tells him he is on the phone, and as soon as he is done with the phone, she will tell him that one person wants to see him. The Assistant Minister continues to talk on the phone for almost two hours. The guy becomes agitated, restless, and frustrated: he leaves his seat and starts pacing, but the old lady asks him politely to remain in his seat because his pacing has made her nervous and suspicious.
In the end, the Assistant Minister comes out of his office to the counter, and the old lady introduces the guy to the Assistant Minister; then the Assistant Minister receives the note from the guy, reads the note entirely, and asks the guy to leave the note in his office so that he will study it very carefully, and he will call him back after one or two weeks. The guy, hoping the Assistant Minister of Education will call him back, returns home with a great expectation. Do you think he will call him back? Think the nature of bureaucracy for a moment and then try to answer the question for yourself.
It is two weeks now, and the Assistant Minister has not yet called the guy; therefore, the exasperated guy returns to the office of the Assistant Minister of Education. Fortunately, as soon as the guy entered the building, the Assistant Minister was standing at the counter and chatting and giggling with the old lady, and as soon as he saw the guy, he told him he was going to call him that day. Was the Assistant Minister telling the truth? Hard to know!
Any way, the Assistant Minister tells the guy he has studied the note and discussed the case with his boss, and both have come to the conclusion that the guy is not a member of the TLF. Since the guy is asking to work as a director of a school and he is the best qualified person for that job, there is nothing the two Ministers of Education can do on this case. The guy must see the Prime Minister, Meles Seitanawi (Zenawi) or someone like Jezebel (Azeb), the Prime Minister’s wife or Al Amoudi, one of the best friends of Meles.
The guy, knowing that he will never be able to see the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, leaves Ethiopia for America through Sudan. And when he arrives in Sudan, the Sudani police put him in jail because he has no passport. Sick, dismayed, and hungry, he dies in the Sudani notorious jail.
No body knows how many innocent people throughout the developing and developed world have lost their lives because of the unnecessary procedures or red tape by these non elective civil servants or bureaucracies. A person must have something in hand to bribe at least one or five of the bureaucracies if he wants his case to be completed in a timely manner and with a good result. Other wise he is a lost creature in the oceans of civil servants or bureaucracies. But the prophet Isaiah has a warning against those who accept bribe: “Your rulers are rebels, companions of thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow’s case does not come before them” (Isaiah 1:23). Solomon has a strong word for those bureaucracies who accept bribe in secret: “A wicked man accepts a bribe in secret to pervert the course of justice” (Proverbs 17:23).
May God help the world by totally eliminating from the face of the earth all dictators who cannot function without corrupt civil servants!
Dear Assta B. Gettu:
This is just to give you a piece of advice regarding your commentaries. In order to give a comment on the subject of an online posting, you should not write a 3-page essay. You can just summarize your statements in just about a paragraph or two so that you don’t lose your audiences. Moreover, don’t try to associate politics with the scripture otherwise you alienate yourself from other people who follow a different religion. In short, be yourself and don’t try to be the smartest boy in the class.
Down with Woyane!
My dear Belaynesh,
Thank you for your sincere advice, and I assure you I am not the smartest boy either in the classroom or outside of it. I could have written you more for your heart-felt advice, but you have told me to be concise. I think I am!
South Sudan secedes amid tensions
By Mary Beth Sheridan and Rebecca Hamilton, Thursday, July 7, 4:28 PM – Washington Post
The map of Africa will be redrawn Saturday, as South Sudan becomes an independent nation through a peace process championed by successive U.S. presidents but still beset by lingering tensions from years of war. President George W. Bush put Sudan at the center of his foreign policy in Africa, helping broker a 2005 peace agreement that ended a conflict that had claimed more than 2 million lives. President Obama has rallied international pressure to rescue that accord as it risked unraveling. U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, who is scheduled to lead the U.S. delegation at the independence ceremony, said in a telephone interview this week that this was “a fraught and fragile moment, but a remarkable one nonetheless.” Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir is expected to attend Saturday’s ceremony. He has promised to accept the oil-rich south’s secession, after initially balking at losing a Texas-size region that had provided much of his government’s revenue. But the north and south are divided over key issues that were supposed to be resolved by now under the peace accord. They include how to fully demarcate the border, divide oil revenue and determine which side will control the disputed region of Abyei. And northern Sudan is still riven with conflicts. Peace in the Darfur region remains elusive. A month ago, the Sudanese began bombing Southern Kordofan, an oil-producing state that will also remain part of Sudan. Anti-government fighters in the area mostly belong to the Nuba, a non-Arab group made up of northerners who sided with the southern rebels during the 21-year war. Violence in Darfur, Abyei and now Southern Kordofan has complicated the Obama administration’s strategy of offering financial and diplomatic incentives to Sudan in return for its completing the north-south peace agreement and resolving the conflict in Darfur. “I don’t think either side wants to go back to full-scale war. I really don’t,” Princeton Lyman, the U.S. special envoy to Sudan, said in an interview. But a recent flare-up in Abyei showed how tense the border remains. Sudanese government troops occupied the region in May after clashes with southern police. “That set everything back a long way. We spent weeks working on plans for having the Sudanese withdraw from Abyei,” Lyman said. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton helped negotiate an agreement that allowed 4,200 Ethiopian peacekeepers to move into Abyei last month under a U.N. mandate. But the situation remains “extremely volatile,” Rice said in a State Department briefing on Thursday. Abyei has been called “Sudan’s Jerusalem” because of both sides’ claims of historic ties to the region. Residents were supposed to vote in January on whether to to join the north or south, but the sides couldn’t agree on who was eligible to vote. Jon Temin, a Sudan expert at the U.S. Institute of Peace, noted that the south had been restrained in responding to the north’s military moves. “The question is, after secession, after they gain that cherished independence, will the southern strategy change at all? Will they become more aggressive militarily in response to provocations from Khartoum?” he said. The Sudanese government has promised that it will continue participating in negotiations led by the African Union on outstanding issues in the peace process after South Sudan’s secession. Rice told reporters at the State Department on Thursday that if Abyei and the other issues weren’t resolved soon, it could “swiftly destabilize the future relationship between these two states. So for our part, the United States will continue to be extremely active in supporting the implementation” of the peace accord. The 2005 peace accord ended a grinding war between the largely Arab, Islamic northerners and the southerners, who are mainly Christian and animist and had long complained of discrimination. The plan provided for limited autonomy for the south until a January referendum on secession. Over the years, an influential coalition of U.S. lawmakers, religious groups and grass-roots organizations has coalesced around ending the north-south war and the fighting in Darfur, where more than 300,000 people died as militias backed by Sudan’s ruling party brutally put down a rebellion. Bashir was subsequently charged with genocide by the International Criminal Court. Obama was initially accused by activists of neglecting Sudan. But over the past year he has intensified his efforts, as the peace accord appeared in danger of collapse. He attended a special U.N. meeting on Sudan, pressed world leaders to support the peace process and sent Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to offer a “road map” of incentives to Bashir’s government. They included delisting it as a state sponsor of terrorism, establishing full diplomatic relations and lifting economic sanctions that were imposed by President Bill Clinton. But implementation of the road map has been stalled by the recent violence. The U.S. government has also provided hundreds of millions of dollars in development aid to South Sudan. South Sudan will become Africa’s first new country since Eritrea became independent in 1993. Shattered by decades of war, the south will begin its life as one of the world’s poorest nations, with huge numbers of villages lacking schools, clean water or sanitation. Half of all positions in South Sudan’s ministries remain unfilled, said Gerry Martone of the International Rescue Committee. More than 80 percent of health-care services are provided by foreign aid groups, according to the committee. Hamilton is a special correspondent.

Sudan Movement’s Mission Is Secured: Statehood
By JEFFREY GETTLEMAN JUBA, Sudan —
On the desk in his office in Juba, the capital of what will soon be the world’s newest country, R. Barrie Walkley, the American consul general, has a telling picture. It is of him and George Clooney shaking hands in a crowd during the independence referendum here in southern Sudan in January. The photograph offers a unique window into what is happening now. American celebrities and religious groups teamed up with policy makers and helped a forlorn underdog region finally achieve what very few separatist movements achieve: independence. On Saturday, after decades of guerrilla struggles and intense international pressure, the Republic of South Sudan will officially split off from the north and become Africa’s 54th country. “Once you got someone like George Clooney, for example….” Mr. Walkley trails off with a smile. “George packs power.” Sudan has been an obsession for the West for more than 100 years, and it is an interesting question why, of all the world’s war zones and all the blood baths Africa has witnessed — Liberia, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, to name a few — this place has grabbed so much attention. On Friday, last-minute preparations were being made for an expected deluge of high-powered guests including Colin L. Powell and President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. Juba’s streets were coursing with soldiers in red berets. Work crews were putting fences up and applying final coats of paint. Throngs of young people marched down the road in impromptu parades. Passing drivers honked gleefully and pumped their fists in the air, in solidarity. “In the coming hours,” said Barnaba Marial Benjamin, South Sudan’s information minister, “we will bear witness to the passage of history and the transformation of the map of Africa.” John Voll, a professor of Islamic history at Georgetown University, said one reason Sudan has attracted so much attention over the years is that its internal conflicts were easily reduced by outsiders to Manichaean absolutes of oppressed Africans, many of them Christians, getting crushed by Arabs, “with echoes of the Crusades.” Sudan — or soon, the two Sudans — is a vast, complex place with a dizzying amount of diversity. Before Saturday’s breakup, Sudan was the biggest country, geographically, in Africa. But it also has an unusually clear fault line, reinforced by the British colonizers, with the southern part mostly animist and Christian and the north mostly Muslim and long dominated by Arabs. A huge swamp, the Sudd, roughly separates the two, and in the 19th century, Western missionaries began to champion the southern Sudanese cause. “Long before there was such a thing as secular human rights groups or a United Nations, missionaries rallied behind Sudan’s suffering,” said Eliza Griswold, author of “The Tenth Parallel,” a book on the line of latitude that roughly separates the Muslim and Christian worlds in Africa and Asia. In 2001, Christian groups found a friend in the White House. The administration of George W. Bush pushed southern rebels, who had been fighting for self-determination for decades, and Sudan’s central government to sign a comprehensive peace agreement in 2005, which guaranteed the southerners the right to secede. But this policy success — which Bush officials consider one of their top achievements, and may be one reason that Mr. Powell, Mr. Bush’s first secretary of state, was expected here on Saturday — was soon overshadowed by the crisis in Darfur. That conflict became the focus of one of the biggest humanitarian advocacy projects since the Live Aid benefit concert in 1985 raised hundreds of millions of dollars for Ethiopian famine victims. Darfur, in western Sudan, exploded in 2003 after rebels attacked government forces and the government responded by arming Arab militias that burned villages, massacred civilians and drove more than two million people off their land. Just about everyone in Darfur is Muslim, so looking at this internal conflict through the Crusades lens did not really apply. But an even more powerful way of presenting the violence emerged: many called it genocide. “This gave the Darfur cause a distinctiveness that could gain real support,” Professor Voll said. “There were few other conflicts at that time that could so easily be called ‘genocidal,’ even though the conflicts in Congo were, and are, more destructive.” Aid groups estimate that more than 5 million people have died in Congo as a result of the continuing conflict there, compared with around 300,000 who may have died of conflict-related causes in Darfur. But the reference to “genocide” gave Darfur added urgency; once it was branded as such, there was a widespread sense that something had to be done. Movie stars soon became engrossed, including Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, Mia Farrow (who has frequently traveled in Africa with American officials) and Mr. Clooney, who is now helping to pay for a satellite to monitor parts of Sudan. There was a relationship between two seminal events in Sudan: the explosion of violence in Darfur and the end of the decades-long war in the south. Many Sudan analysts have said that Darfur — and all the attention it was getting — was the added pressure that finally pushed the Sudanese government, facing an international public relations disaster, to sign the treaty in 2005 that gave the southerners just about all they wanted. This past January, Sudan’s division became a fait accompli when southerners voted in a referendum, by 98.8 percent, to secede. In the months leading to the vote, celebrities like Mr. Clooney urged the Obama administration to stay focused on Sudan. “Would this have taken place without celebrities?” Mr. Walkley, the consul general, asked. “I think the celebrities had a lot to do with it.” Celebrities, he said, “focus attention on a problem. They do it in a bumper sticker fashion, perhaps,” but “if you get millions of people sending blogs to the president, that will have an impact.” But in Darfur, Western advocates may have complicated matters, too, some analysts contend, pushing a hard line against the government that has made the rebels there more intransigent and peace negotiations more difficult. Mr. Clooney, who got malaria the last time he was in Sudan, was not expected for the festivities on Saturday. But religious groups will be represented. The only nongovernment employee in President Obama’s official delegation to Juba besides Mr. Powell is Ken Hackett, president of Catholic Relief Services.

East Africa is in the midst of its worst drought in more than 60 years, with as many as 10 million people at risk.
The drought has led to crop failures and food shortages in parts of Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti and Somalia, and now a refugee crisis looms as people leave their homes to escape hunger

How can you be sure that all the 2245 pages of letters (supposedly of Menelik’s) printed now are the once prepared by Paulos Gnogno? We are witnessing the fact that the Woyanes are trying to rewrite history and change it to their own version. How can you be sure that this collection of letters have not been adulterated by Woyanes intrigue? How do we know that there is some selection to give a distored image of the reality?
Today is one of the happiest days for Southern Sudanese and for the rest of the Horn regions as the oppressed citizens of Juba celebrate proudly their first independent day after thousands of their people were slaughtered by the Northern Sudanese Arab Muslims who tried to impose the Sharia law upon these Sudanese Christians.
Good credits must be given to George W. Bush who worked hard for the independence of Southern Sudan, and I am sure Mr. Colin Powell will represent him very well by telling his hard work to liberate the Southern Sudanese.
At the same time, it is very disappointing that President Obama has overlooked the Southern Sudanese precious independence for not sending the Secretary of States or some other officials from his administration to Juba to congratulate the people of the Southern Sudan. Obama may have a reason for not sending some high ranking people to Juba. He does not want to disappoint his Muslim friends by sending his cabinet members to a newly born Christian country. Yes, Obama is a Muslim; he supports a Muslim agenda rather than a Christian agenda. Witness the following document!
“Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said he had a one-on-one meeting with Obama, in which President Obama told him that he was still a Muslim, the son of a Muslim father, the stepson of Muslim stepfather, that his half brothers in Kenya are Muslims, and that he was sympathetic towards the Muslim agenda.
Finally, during the week of 14-18th of January 2010, just on the eve of my winter tour to the US, Rachel picked up a Nile TV broadcast in which Egyptian Foreign Minister Abul Gheit said on the “Round Table Show” that he had had a one on one meeting with Obama who swore to him that he was a Moslem, the son of a Moslem father and step-son of Moslem step-father, that his half-brothers in Kenya were Moslems, and that he was loyal to the Moslem agenda.
He asked that the Moslem world show patience. Obama promised that once he overcame some domestic American problems (Healthcare), that he would show the Moslem world what he would do with Israel. (more here)
This is according to Israel Today here. Here is the passage from the May 2010 issue of “Israel Today.” It is on page 3 in an article titled “Obama, a ‘Strategic Catastrophe,'” by Aviel Schneider:
The feeling among the Israeli public is that Obama is appeasing the Muslim world at the expense of Israel.
“The American President told me in confidence that he is a Muslim,” said Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Nile TV.
That could explain why Obama has instructed that the term “Islamic extremism” no longer be used in official government documents and statements. Furthermore, the US is now accusing Israel of harming American interests in the Middle East.
General David Petraeus, the head of US Central Command, said Israel’s intransigence on resolving the conflict with the Palestinians is endangering US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Even the US Congress considers Obama’s behavior toward Netanyahu humiliating. Three-quarters of the House of Representatives, 337 of 435 members, signed a bipartisan letter to Clinton expressing “deep concern over recent tension” between the two countries, and demanding that it be smoothed over quickly and in private.
“Obama is a real problem for Israel,” a senior official told told Yediot. “He is Israel’s biggest strategic catastrophe.” The newspaper also quoted another official who believes that for the first time Washington has switched sides.
“The Obama White House is putting pressure only on Israel but does not expect anything from the Palestinians,” he said. “These American demands are unacceptable.”
Egyptian minister: Obama told me he is a Muslim News that Matters hat tip PV
Obama told me he is still a Muslim, who supports the Muslim agenda.
This was a statement by Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit on Nile-TV. It was made on the «Round table show».
This is the statement recorded:
Adul Gheit said he had a one-on-one meeting with Obama, where the US President told him that
He was still a Muslim, the son of a Muslim father, the step son of Muslim stepfather, that his half brothers in Kenya are Muslims, and that he was sympathetic towards the Muslim agenda.
Adul Gheit claimed Obama told the Arabs to show patience. Obama promised that once he overcame some domestic issues, like the Health care reform, he would show the Muslim World how to deal with Israel.

This is akin to an SS officer getting elected president during WW II. Every country in the free world must be cognizant of such a catastrophic sea change in the leadership of the free world (as witnessed by events over the past year).
This changes everything. He took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, and yet he has gone around the world promoting Islam, the sharia (Islamic law).
The alleged exchange between Obama and Gheit would almost certainly have happened in early January 2010, when Gheit was in Washington, D.C. regarding “Mideast peace talks.”
On Thursday, January 7, 2010, the Associated Press reported that “Clinton and Mitchell [were] scheduled to meet” with Gheit on Friday, January 8, 2010: ABC news here.
On Friday, January 8, 2010, Hillary Clinton and Gheit spoke with each other. The U.S. Department of State has provided video before the meeting: Department of State here.
On Saturday, January 9, 2010, NPR spoke with Gheit about his visit: NPR.org (much thanks to Grant for the links).
This is devastating news, and yet no media is covering it. A stealth jihad on the White House.
Remember, during his campaign, I and others were excoriated for using Obama’s middle name.
We were accused of implying he was a crypto-Muslim. We could not discuss his background, his Islamic schooling, his ties to Islam. However, I have meticulously documented his Muslim background in my soon-to-be-released book: The Post-American Presidency: The Obama Administration’s War on America (buy it now).
It became all too clear after his election how proud he was of his Muslim name, background and family. He made this plain when he gave his very first interview to Muslim media and boasted of these things. But bear in mind, it was verboten to speak of such things during the presidential campaign.
That was the level of deceit and obfuscation and taqiya.
Al-Tabari’s (d. 923) famous tafsir (exegesis of the Koran) is a standard and authoritative reference work in the entire Muslim world. Regarding 3:28, he writes: “If you [Muslims] are under their [infidels’] authority, fearing for yourselves, behave loyally to them, with your tongue, while harboring inner animosity for them. … Allah has forbidden believers from being friendly or on intimate terms with the infidels in place of believers — except when infidels are above them [in authority]. In such a scenario, let them act friendly towards them.”
Regarding 3:28, Ibn Kathir (d. 1373, second in authority only to Tabari) writes, “Whoever at any time or place fears their [infidels’] evil may protect himself through outward show.” As proof of this, he quotes Muhammad’s close companion, Abu Darda, who said, “Let us smile to the face of some people [non-Muslims] while our hearts curse them”; another companion, al-Hassan, said, “Doing taqiyya is acceptable till the Day of Judgment [i.e., in perpetuity]. Obama is a boldfaced liar. Why? Why lie if you have nothing to hide?
Of course, if Obama believes himself a Muslim, it was taqiya — deception or lies to advance Islam. Which he performed brilliantly during his election: he lied with brazen contempt. And clearly his Islamic Jew-hatred is made painfully clear in his stunning rebuke of Israel.
Is it any wonder that his counter terror adviser speaks arabic, calls Jerusalem al quds and calls jihad a “legitimate tenet of Islam”?
Adul Gheit claimed Obama told the Arabs to show patience. Obama promised that once he overcame some domestic issues, like the Health care reform, he would show the Muslim World how to deal with Israel.

Ouch. What a disgrace.
The Post-American Presidency: The Obama Administration’s War on America”
Famine is looming in some parts of Ethiopia, and I hope Mr. Obama’s foreign aid program would include Ethiopia since there are about 40 million Muslims in Ethiopia. I know Barack Obama is very sympathetic toward states with big number of Muslims.
As Mr. Obama told the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, that he (Obama) is a Muslim, Meles Seitanawi (Zenawi) had told Colonel Kaddafi of Libya that Meles is an Arab Muslim from Yemen. This is a crystal clear comparison between Obama and Meles Seitanawi (Zenawi). No wonder why Obama likes Meles and sends him millions of American dollars every year. Religious affiliation is much stronger than political or economic relationship.
