Several EPPF fighters disappeared, many feared dead

The latest news that came out of Eritrea regarding Ethiopian resistance fighters sent shock waves through Ethiopian communities all over. The report, which is posted on Ethiomedia last night, says that 17 members of the Ethiopian People’s Patriotic Front (EPPF) have been executed following the organization’s general assembly in February 2010. The executions were carried out on the orders of Col. Fitusm Yitshak, Eritrean adviser to Ethiopian opposition groups in Eritrea, the report adds. The victims are:

1. Adane Mekuannent (former secretary general)
2. Alemu Melkamu
3. Desse Abera
4. Gashaw Babel
5. Melaku Abera
6. Alemseged Tekhest
7. Fekadu Endalew (Division Commander)
8. Shumet Sisay (Division Commander)
9. Asmare Zewde
10. Getnet Feseha
11. Tekle Gebru
12. Esubalew Hailu
13. Beshaw Dube
14. Yaregal Asmare
15. Mohamed Molla
16. Adem Getahun
17. Fentahun Alemshet (Force Commander)

I have met some of these individuals at the Feb. 2010 general assembly. One of them, Esubalew Hailu, was sitting in front of me. He was asking tough questions and taking the leadership to task on a number of issues. Adane Mekuannent, the former secretary general, is a highly respected fighter and an outspoken person. He was prevented from attending the general assembly. When we asked where he is, we were told that he is on a mission.

I have known and repeatedly asked explanation about the disappearance of most of the individuals in the list, on top of several others, including Shibabaw Abebe, who was a well known anti-Woyanne rebel leader in Wolkait before joining EPPF.

There were several incidents of mutiny following the disappearance of these EPPF fighters, most of whom are central committee members who were elected at the Feb. 2010 general assembly. Subsequently, the rank-and-file members started to desert in droves, and according to my sources inside EPPF, only about 70 fighters left now.

I’ve been trying to verify the authenticity of the Ethiomedia report from multiple source. What I have been able to confirm so far is that the individuals in the list have indeed disappeared without a trace, but not all of my sources could tell me that they have first hand information on whether they have been executed.

Due to the extreme gravity of the report, I urge the Government of Eritrea to launch an investigation without delay. Since many of the individuals in the list are members of the EPPF central committee, it will not take long for the GOE to find out what happened to them.

When I traveled to Eritrea last February, I, along with others who went with me, had called for the creation of an inquiry panel composed of 3 individuals from EPPF and 3 individuals from the Government of Eritrea (GOE) to investigate the alleged corruption inside EPPF and the disappearance of members. The request was shot down and we were accused by Col. Fitsum, through his puppets, of trying to cause friction between EPPF and the GOE.

Because of Ethiomedia’s strong anti-Shabia stand, I have heard some Ethiopians expressing doubt about the report. Ethiomedia’s editor Abraha Belai may have anti-Shabia bias, but as a professional journalist who takes his profession seriously, I don’t think he would post such an extremely shocking news without doing due diligence. The issue at hand is not the messenger of the news, but what happened to these 17 individuals and many others, including Col. Tadesse Muluneh, who have disappeared following the Feb. 2010 general assembly.

Just to take advantage of the situation. How can one trust them? Why one of the EPPF fighters shot the damned colonel and kill himself? If u r a fighter that is what u r supposed to do.

It is very hard to trust Ethiomedia as he is anti Eritrea and may exploit the existing story that is developed here in the Ethiopianreview. be careful Elias donot jump into a mistake before knowing the truth. Whatever writen in Ethiomedia sound not a character of Shebia. It probably so that a structural change may have been occured that one group took the others as a result some may have died. However, this is just my speculation and I wish it is not that true. moreover, why would shebia kill a group that are only of 70 people? It doesn’t make sense to me. It is the woyane trick(Ethiomedia. I have problem to accept Tigrian’s at this time stand against Meles. Thus, care should be taken when it comes with Ethiomedia.

  7. To call a spade a spade, Shabia is not different from Weyane, rather they are two faces of a coin. With this in mind, let you contimnue with your diplomatic approach. To me it would have be better to get organized in Addis Ababa itself than in Asmara where threr no protection to be garuanted. In Addis at least we have the poeple.

    You made me laugh as to the fact that you you are still asking the Eritrean regime for investigation on the disappearance of the so-called fighters. How can Isayas Afeworki launch investigation against himself? I don’t know why I keep coming to this site but every time I do, I come across strange things. One thing I know for sure is that your gut is defying you to confront Isayas head on. Come on man! he’s not gonna sue you in London.

    Thanks for bringing this in to light. I was one of those who belived that Eritrea was a true allay. Recent developments have confirmed how mis-guided I was. This is a serious blow to all of us and would do immense damage to both countries. The GOE should come out and explain.

    Our hearts really bleed after learning about the killings of so many brave fighters by the other “mad dog of Eastern Africa” President Isaias Afeworki. Here is your Person of the Year are capable of!!!

    The good news is, as killings of young and brave Ethiopians by the Derg didn’t stop the struggle, this also would not stop our fight for a better future.

  14. Yesterday evenning there was an EPPF comrade doing interview with Eri-TV Amharic program. The man seem very relaxed and in high spirit, as far as exediting Woyanne’s fall he was on point.

    How can I believe what Abraha Belai (an angry Woyanne, TPLF#2) says. This man is an admited anti-Eritre self proclaimed pro-Tigray interest. Anything such idiot says must be taken with a garin of salt. I would not take him serious at all, along with Dagmawi (TPLF reporter) and Ben (a hidden Tigryan operating under Oromo ID).

    congratulations on meeting with your wonderful father ( and mother). Seeing your graceful father made my thoughts drift to my beloved Ethiopia. I was homesick. I am deeply sorry to learn the dreadful prdicaments your father went through. Make no mistakes these people will have their days in court. let us also not forget the millions of ethiopians who are being victimized at the hands of these despots.

    I was devestated by the shocking news of the 17 Ethiopians summarily executed by the Shaibia hit-men. My heart bleeds for the brave Ethiopians who have pershed at the hands of the Shaibia government. I have no doubt in my mind that these courageous fighters sought to liberate Ethiopia from the bandas and despots at Minelik palace who have facilitated the landlocking of our country and who showed no qualms to cede large swaths of our fertile territory to the Sudan which our forebearers sacrificed defending. They have committed serious crimes including, but not limited to, genocide, summary execution of civilian citizens, torture and disappearances.
    Dear Elias, I hope we are one on the issues mentioned above. Just a few words about myself: first I am an Ethiopian, second I am a Tigrean (an Ethiopian of Tigrean origin). I consider my self a notoriously staunch Ethiopian nationalist. As an Ethiopian who grew up in the province of Eritrea I know first hand that Shaibia and its brain-washed supporters have deep-rooted hatred towards Ethiopia. They vomit denegrating slurs calling the proud people of Amhara “Adgi”, the brave Tigreans “Agame” (eventhough ‘Agame’ is by no means deaming), call our great Oromo people “galla”, etc. I am sure once they now that Elias is of no utility to their cause (disintegration of Ethiopia), they will label you Ezie’ adgi.

    You might have married to someone from that province (which is no vice, and at any rate, a noble thing to do), I am afraid that you might have been the victim of Eritreas preposterous notion of grandiosity. These people have excelled the art of aggrandizing themselves while belittling others. I wish to leave Erirea’s self grandiose notion to the clinical Pschologists. You have written reletlesly articles that show a fuming hatred towards Tigreans. Tigreans have always been the defenders of Ethiopian Unity and sovereighnity. In fact, Tigreans are among the founders of the Ethiopian state/Empire. The pity idea of liberating Ethiopia from Tigreans with the help of Shaibia only stems from some one whose self esteem is at its nadir. Ethiopia is more than 10 times bigger and about 17 times more populous than Eritrea. I urge you to stop your efforts to demean, belttle and ostracize Tigreans. Tigreans are not party to the evil deeds of the Meles regime, eventhough some banads and yes-men might have benefitted. These individuals are scums of the earth, and by no means represent the proud people of Tigrai.

    Now, brother Elias, the Ethiopian people expect you to be a critical thinker and urge to grow (emotionally and intellectually) and let’s always, always think in the best interest of our beautiful country, Ethiopia. As an Ethiopian, you don’t want to go the annals of history as one of the few bandas and traitors. work towards the unity of our country. I want you think of my role model, Obang Metho.

    I am glad that you are writing this horrible issues being perpetrated by the heinous brutal dictatorship and his subordinates in my lovely country Eritrea. It is unfortunate this be told about my government; nonetheless it is true.

    Elias please try for a moment to see if all what you have tried in the past few years is worth it to start with. I have no problem with you being opposing your government in Ethiopia; that is your right, your choice and your responsibility as well. However, trying to remedy Woyane’s shortcomings with a well established DEVIL is VERY WRONG to start with. In fact, you are lucky you returned from Eritrea alive. Elias, it doesn’t take much effort to see what GOE is: just see how many Eritrean young people are escaping from the devil. In fact, you missed an opportunity while you were in Eritrea in that you could ask IN PRIVATE any Eritrean child in the age range of 8 and above and would be shocked to hear the child is already dreaming and planning to escape one day.

    This is the state of Eritrea and GOE that you tried to paint rosy pictures about in the beginning of 2010. I was disappointed with your selfishness at the time not only with your denial what GOE is like but also completely inventing rosy pictures about GOE to the extent of talking about man of the year for the devil and his kid the diablos Ali Abdu. At the time, frankly speaking I cursed you with all Eritrean blood that has been shed since our independence thanks to the adventure of the devil.

    Am I glad to see this happen to Ethiopians in Eritrea now? Absolutely NOT! However it will be fair especially for you Elias to take some part of the blame for putting the lives of these Ethiopians at risk.

    Think about it Elias. The stooges Eritrean diaspora who support GOE; for the mere hope that it will create another war, be broke with forex, then ask these stooges to pay $10,000 US dollars to get land to build houses in Asmara; had been propping YOU and Ethiopian Review like no one else, right? Do you think they meant it? Do you think these blood suckers really care about Ethiopia when in fact they don’t care about their own people back home? Where are they now? Why are Eritrean sites not displaying these items in Ethiopian Review now; yet they were displaying at least twice if not more your man of the year of the devil or your claim dollar will worth 20 birr, or any crap you were reporting?

    Let the one with ears hear: GOE and its supporters are all fake blood thirsty people who exercise their rights at western cities or the UN but never ever think of such rights also need to be granted to Eritreans back home. This is real… I hope the US at one point puts an act to charge such individuals with crimes against humanity.

    Ethiomedia indicated its source of information to be a report by EPPF fighters who fled to Ethiopia. What a reliable source!!! In its report Ethiomedia also recycled your disinformation of the last couple of weeks. I quote “Elias, who had joined EPPF some years back, accused Eritrean security officials of “arbitrarily arresting Ethiopians, blocking reform inside the opposition groups, sabotaging their activities so that they stay weak, turning their members against each other, and robbing funds that are being sent to EPPF from its supporters in the Diaspora.” “

    But I tell you Ethiopians are intelligent enough to see what is behind your reports and that of Ethiomedia about EPPF. Please do not produce scum anymore!.

  26. Why there is no a single statement from the EPPF itself both inside and outside the country, or did it cease to exist? I am having a sleepless night. Were all of them in Ertra and not inside the country? I still don’t beleive Ethiomedia, one time you Elias yourself calling the editor pro weyane and now you are calling him true professional. I don’t understand and I am confused. What is going on between you and Abraha Belay?

It is true; members of this New Oromo Movement could not have committed such heinous crimes on these 17 Ethiopian heroes unless they have the green light from that treacherous and blood-thirsty man – Isaiah Afeworki.

    As soon as they killed them and got rid of them, then they declared a New Oromo Movement supported and financed by the Eritrean government to crash, first the Amharas, and then the Tegarues, and finally take over Ethiopia, rename Addis Ababa “Finfinne,” burn all books written in Amharic language, and proclaim “Galligna” as the official language of Ethiopia.

    As soon as Isaiah Afeworki sees the Oromo Ambition is fulfilled, he does not need anything from the Oromo government after he has annexed the entire Tigray province including the Amhara provinces. There is an appropriate Amharic saying that explains the ambitions of the New Oromo Movement and the Isaiah Afeworki’s corrupt government: “ልብሽ ጤፍ አብቅሏል,” which means, followers of the New Oromo Movement and Isaiah Afeworki think, by killing few Amharas, they would take the entire Ethiopia; however, they will be all decimated before they accomplish their foul goals.

    One may ask a valid question: why did members of the New Oromo Movement in collaboration with Afeworki’s murder squad kill the 17 Amharas?

    The answer is obvious: They killed them because they were Amharas; they killed them because they had shown a leadership quality the New Oromo Movement and the Eritrea government lack; they killed them because they refused to bend to the New Oromo Movement’s demand to demote the Amharic language; they killed them because they refused to work under the illiterate Isaiah’s men and the New Oromo Movement; they killed them because they had a noble plan that gives the Ethiopian people a lasting peace and an economic prosperity; they killed them because their plan to establish a sound friendship between Ethiopia and Eritrea contradicts Isaiah’s plan never to create any partnership between Ethiopia and Eritrea because such partnership, Isaiah knows, will endanger his grip on power over the few Eritrean population. Therefore, they killed them in order to liberate Oromia, not Ethiopia, and to leave Eritrea with its two ports as a sovereign nation forever, but what brought these 17 Amhara heroes to the slaughter is that, deep in their hearts, they might have never recognized Eritrea as a sovereign country, and those Oromo traitors who might have discovered the motives of these Amhara heroes could have reported to the Isaiah’s agents what these Amhara freedom fighters had discussed about important and secretive issues, issues such as never leave Ethiopia landlocked and never allow the power-thirsty Isaiah to annex Tigray and some of the Amhara regions. So, when Isaiah heard this shocking news from his Oromo allies, he ordered members of the New Oromo Movement to murder them, and with great joy they carried Isaias’ order, and they killed them so that they would not have a rival movement like the Ethiopian Freedom Fighters.

    We will revenge their blood, never allow Oromia to secede, and we will crash the New Oromo Movement, a movement that has betrayed the 17 Amharas and killed them in a cold blood.

    In the first place if there is corruption within EPPF why shuld you invite Eritrean officials to investigate the allegation. Could not this be considered as marginalizing the autonomy of EPPF? It all shoild be left to the party to resolve its problems.

    1. Are there credible Eritreans, in the diaspora concerned for a constructive relationship between Ethiopia and Eritrea? Do you know them? Let them give you us explanation for what was posted in the news.

    2. Do you know Ethiopian lawyers who can give you an advise on the matter. Is there any legal, diplomatic or political process of addressing the issue. Do you know any international organization that deals with such related issues? I encourage you to knock the door.

    3. Don’t stop pressing the Eritrean government officialls to ask them explanation for what is happening to the patriot Ethiopians.

    4. Believe me, the whole Ethiopian community in the diaspora is/will be on your side, at least, on this unfortunate cisrucmstance.

The only difference between woyane and Shabia was on how to share the ill gotten fortune, not the destruction of Ethiopia. Esayas no-Esayas, Eritreans will never support Ethiopia. They envy us, they miss the food, they miss the climate, they miss the opportunity that transcends them from “metregia melewecha” to an owner of a business. Our future is in our hands, we have to struggle with what we have got, 3% can not rule the rest 97%. The so called colonel Fitsum of Eritrea could not act without the orders of the crazy lunatic dictator Isayas. Isayas is worse than Hitlor himself, his hatred for anything Ethiopian is ingrained in his blood, only death will relieve him of his hatred, let death take him faster before he caused us any more grief.

  39. It was cheap strategy to bigin with after all. History has it that nothing good came through Eritrea. Violent actions can take us any distance to build democracy in Ethiopia. Thus, we, and specifically you Elias, are responsible for all the haterade and unncessary bloodshed within Ethiopia. Try to use the space what ever narrow it might be and lead the people. The ethiopian people exactly knows who has got what it takes. It’s not as easy as paraphing on the laptop.

  42. If this happen really I am sure the damage is irreparable and any Ethiopian organization should not trust the Eritrian government. Trust me the damage has been done. If the story is true the killers must pay with their life these people has family so they should not be forgotten. After now any Ethiopian freedom fighter should not go to Eritria because since the Eritrian government wants dance with the TPLF tune we need to fight TPLF from home. I am really sad and mad. Mister Esayas should not be silent he must say where tthese people are now. If Fitsum had killed them he will pay in the future I am sure he works for TPLF or the Eritrian frendly gesture was a fake one. I am speechless now.

    Let’s see, last time the number of EPPF fighting were put to 70. Today, we learn that 17 EPPF members are executed, after the general meeting, and some runaway and astonishingly the number of the fighters is still 70. The last time I checked with my math skill, I was normal, but now I am having hard time adding up the numbers. So I have decided to only connect the dots. First, who is Tikur chaka? If this person is former EPPF insider and now lives somewhere outside of Eritrea and Ethiopia, why not reveal his/her real identity? Why is that Mr. Abraha Belay is suddenly acting to care about EPPF fighters? One thing for sure is Abrha and Elias are working closely now; quoting each there’s word and sharing defamatory information so and so. Congratulate to you both. In the next few weeks we will be hearing the complete execution of the remaining 70 EPPF members or even larger number than the existed number, 70.
    EPPF or others groups are not fighting for Eritrea’s sake. Of course as a human being I wouldn’t want to see the execution of any Ethiopian fighter, however; I will have none or very little sympathy if they completely disintegrate but without losing any life. Because if Ethiopians did not care about the movement and working hard to create destruction to the movement, why should I care? secondly it is becoming more visible to Eritreans that the Ethiopians’ sea sickness is still well intact . This is the reason why so many under cover woyannes are writing so many negative things about Eritrea, EPPF, ONL, TPDM… so as to make people believe there is more problem to the Ethiopians residing in Eritrea than those who are living in Ethiopia. This way, Ethiopians will believe the cause of Ethiopia problem is Eritrea as oppose woyanne.

    Great post you put it very well and told who the true Eritreans are. Eritreans hate their own blood circulating inside their vine as Tegaru tribes but they use our language, music, religion, dancing, hair style, clothes, farming, food, the process of intermarriage, life style, communities set ups and everything Tigray and Ethiopia does the Eritreans do it except they hate who they are.

    Leaders whose their origins are directly from Tigray most resent immigrants specially the so called president of Eritrea whose origin is from Tembien from the same mother and father of KING YOHANNES but ordered to drop cluster bombs at elementary school in the city of his grand father Palace and killed his own people.

    Woyane organization was more to the Eritrean cause than to the Tigrayans plight until today. Had Woyane was not fighting along side of Shaebia, EPLF would not see Asmara today, they could have been wiped out by ELF, the Syrian, Egypt, Sudan and Iraqi recruited organized groups. Woyane eradicated ELF from the Eritrean soil and gave a breathing room for EPLF to grow and control the landscape of Eritrea and Woyane rescued EPLF twice at their base Sahel and Naqfa from enemy Derg from total elimination from the Eritrean soil. If Eritreans hate their own blood, hate their own heritage and betrayed their comrades, why should Eritreans care for Amhara to come to power the people who fought so hard and give their middle class life and cities to destroy Amhara to begin with???

    We humans are prone to forgetting things very quickly. Can you all recall way back during what the Eritrean riffraff did to Ethiopian soldiers as they travel from Massawa towards Asmara. The Shabian ruffians knew Ethiopian soldiers were dead tired and did not want to engage them in a fight. They ambushed them on that desolate highway, and promised not to hurt them if they put down their weapons peacefully.

    The Ethiopian soldiers numbering over thousands did as they were told hoping to be taken as (POW) prisoners of war, and treated with dignity according to the Geneva Convention regarding the prisoners of war.

    The Ethiopian soldiers did not eat or drink for several days, and were extremely exhausted to walk, let alone pull trigger and fight the well fed, well armed and well financed by the Arabs petrol-dollar Shabia’s merciless killer squad.

    The Eritrean gang of ruffians after disarming our soldiers can any one guess what they did to them next? You guessed it right. They machine gunned down over thousands of our brothers including my own 18 year old brother who was a paratrooper, and buried them in mass grave the same way they did to our 17 member of the EPPF fighters as told yesterday by the Ethiomedia web site.

    Don’t be fooled if from time to time they intentionally allow to conduct armed skirmishes across their borders. It is only done for political consumption to garner cash flow from the expatriates.

    If his cousin to the south promised the Eritrean devil to give him Badme and ask him in exchange of opposition fighters, the devil will never hesitate to deliver them on a silver platter, with their hands and feet tied together.
