The death of Greater Tigray manifesto (updated with maps)

In 1976, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (Woyanne) that is currently ruling Ethiopia crafted its Greater Tigray Manifesto. The manifesto called for transforming the northern Ethiopian region of Tigray in to an independent country through expansionist policies. For Greater Tigray to become a reality, Meles Zenawi and his Woyanne comrades decided that they have to take control of the central government in Ethiopia  and systematically dismantle the country. They also appropriated lands from neighboring regions of Gonder and Wollo (see the maps below).

As the map below shows, the Woyanne junta claimed 20 percent of Gonder’s territory and a large area of northern Wollo.

The Greater Tigray agenda suffered a setback when Woyanne went to war with Eritrea in 1998. Woyanne had to scramble and get Ethiopians to support the war by trying to falsely present itself as an Ethiopian nationalist group.

The Woyanne’s war with Eritrea caused split inside the organization’s top leadership, and Meles purged about half of the central committee members, putting the final nail on the coffin of Greater Tigray manifesto.

Currently, TPLF under Meles Zenawi’s leadership is not a cause- or ideology-driven organization any more. It is a business mafia that happens to wield political and military power.

As it turns out, Greater Tigray manifesto is having the unintended consequence of diminishing Tigrean nationalism:

1. A growing number of Tigreans do not want to be associated with TPLF or Tigrean nationalism any more.

2. Other than Mekele, the capital city of Tigray, most parts of the region, including Meles Zenawi’s hometown, Adwa, are still dirt poor and have yet to receive the dividends for TPLF’s political power, despite the enormous wealth the Meles crime family has amassed.

3. Currently, there are over 100,000 non-Tigrean troops in Tigray (a region with a population of 6 million).  As a result, about 1 in every 10 child currently born in Tigray doesn’t have a Tigrean father. Tigreans are also migrating toward south in massive numbers.

4. Woyanne’s investment over the past 20 years has not produced tangible results, other than a few shiny high rise buildings in Mekele. The reason is that the investment was politically-driven, hence poorly studied and planned. The end result of a government-controlled investment or command economy is always a colossal failure. The Soviet Union comes to mind.

In recent days, we are witnessing an encouraging development. The Tigrean elite, the last refuge of Tigrean nationalism, is coming around to finally disowning the Meles dictatorship, although not as fast as we would like it to happen.

A lesson that can be learned from the failure of Greater Tigray Manifesto is that it is in the best interest of all Ethiopian ethnic groups to submit their parochial interest to Ethiopian nationalism. Tigray, Oromo, Amhara, and all the other ethnic groups can flourish under a strong and united Ethiopia.

It is time for all Tigreans to wake up and join other Ethiopians in the fight to remove the Meles vampire regime.

    instede war for ever, but then how can they do that if they allready did. Can you take it from your self? I think that is what
    they are trying to do. We all wish them some sucusses on that one.

    I get it they know the quenscuences of their doing. We have heard Meles saying Amaran Adakemenal they will never come back again while calling him self Ethiopian leader. We Ameharas are not the only Ethiopians after all Tigray use to be our capital
    for his info who went and concurd almost half of the world and
    Ethiopia and tigray specialy are still paying for it if they know the doings of some masters. Not that we did any think. So what we call them is ‘YEMESHEBET GIBE’

  3. I would have really submitted a condolence letter to one of the masterminds of the Great Tigray(“Abay Tigray”), his Excellency Aboy Sibhat, if the attitude of Great Tigray had died.
    I’m very doubtful, whether this sinister objective is out of agenda or not.
    It is a no-peace-no war situation.
    According to the opinion of Mr. ER (Ethiopian Review), Ato Meles has averted the dream of Great Tigray by attacking those for riders of “Abay Tigray”.
    I am not pessimist, but I would say most or almost all educated/elites of that origin contemplate on that particular day.
    Aboy Sibhat is still engaged in the accomplishment of the doomsday before he dies.
    So he nowadays is residing in Tigray with his allocated Millions of Dollars to secretly agitate the people of Tigray to that end.
    Hence, the dream has not yet died down.
    If Ato Meles has killed such sinister project, then I would have called him a unifier of the country!!!

    If Great Tigray/Abay Tigray becomes a reality, then the war between Eritrea and Abay Tigray will break out to have control over Afar Region and Assab port.
    “Abay Tigray” might become a battlefield encompassed by surrounding regions that wish to redress their lost territories.
    There is a possibility of devastation and huge loss of life in connection to the accumulated grudge other Ethiopian people have.
    Unfortunately, the so-called elites of Tigre are currently obsessed with big business, corruption, prostitution, bad manner, lack of moral integrity, etcetera.

    Those handfuls of individuals were not capable of drafting a new way of thinking for the betterment of entire Ethiopia. They had rather imagined an adventurous attitude to alienate the people of Tigray from the rest of Ethiopia.
    To achieve their objectives they used unnecessarily the livelihood of Tigre youngsters and teenagers as tools to quench their lust of power.
    It has cost the lives of tens of thousands of Tigres and youngsters of the neighboring regions were also victims of such useless undertaking.

    After the seizure of power from the Derg, the TPLFites have built an army, whose commander -in-chief is a TPLFite. Not only the building of economic imperious of wealth at the shoulder of the majority of Ethiopia people is by itself a scandal and incites animosity. EFFORT is a kind of mafia unit that confiscates wealth in favor of TPLFites.
    Therefore, things are going as scheduled.
    Both the map that is drawn and the political activity of TPLFites go in congruent with each other.

As seen in most of comments above, it’s only positive effect is to serve frustrated , angry , hopeless Eritreans who were bested by Weyane both in diplomacy & war as an outlet to fantasise & express their wishful thinking to reverse things back to the period prior to 1998.

    You call me Hot Air for saying “if we want change in Ethiopia, these are the people that are capable militarily and politically more than anybody right now.”

    Let me ask you a good question,
    who is in charge of the Economy,Intellegence,Military, and the backbone of TPLF. Melles might not rely on Tigrians as he used to, but still they are the ones. I am not saying that he can not be overthrown with out the participation of Tigrians, but it would be mighty hard. After 20 years in power, he is getting richer and stronger, that means we have to change our mode of struggle . . . meaning involving Tigrians to be part of it. You will find a good number ex-combantants that will contribute greatly to the struggle and deny Melles any base.
    Is that a foolish idea? Come on man.

    If you intend to base your argument on the historical identity of the peoplw of Welkait Tegede, you should support your argument the full story rather than playing with facts to fit your agenda. To set the record straight the people of Welkait Tegede have existed in their current homeland for thousands of years under their own self administration. One of the reason “Axum” civilization collapsed was because the people of Welkait Tegede waged war against the Axumites who were harassing the people and tried to conquer their homeland. The rise of the people of Welkait to the west and the expansion of Islam to the east further contributed to the demise of Axumite Kingdom.

    So please drop the B.S. story your are telling about the Welkait being of Tigray prior to 1943. This is lie.

    I do remember when I was small child some people from Tigray came for work such as building new houses and I do remember my parents paid them and they build house for us, then they went back to heir home.

    What is the most vital question to be asked is why Meles and all his close affiliates want to do all this to this country and its peoples. Usually what we discuss is the symptom of the disease and not the disease its self and may be that is what makes us all live around in a vicious-circle.
    May be beyond political talks Ato Meles and his affiliates including Esayas Afeworki of Eritrea very need psychiatric medical attention as to why they want to create all this mess. In my view if they want and there is a need to get any love from Ethiopian let’s us give them what they want.
    What is the very reason that these guys have betrayed Ethiopia and its people and have been becoming the very instrument of Ethiopian foreign historical enemies who have always been aspiring our disintegration and failure? They are in fact mercenaries and traitors as I understand it.
    But why they become like this????????????

  16. Because of the gerrymandering in the north many lives have been destroyed. I am really confused about the government of TPLF. Is it a general campaign of colonization or unification of the empire in a modern way? What is the meaning of federalism? Was Afar region part of Ethiopia? As I read it from books it was integrated to the Empire around 1933. Does it matters to be part of Tigray or Gonder as far as the whole politics, economy, government power, and military power is controlled by TPLF?
    They have decided and wanted to be in power forever? The current election and reconfiguration of power sharing indicate towards total control of the government by few MLLT elites.

    According to the new book GAddii the TPLF army was the one which had fought gallantly to liberate Eritrea and give part of Afar to Eritreans. The TPLF army fought in Eritrea for over more than five years continuously to defend EPLF and eventually allowed it to come out of hibernations in Nafka. How can you relate this military historical background in relations to the article you just had written?

    I am really confused what will be the intentions of the group? It does not make sense to me. They devoted major part of their military force to liberate Eritrea and then go back to get the land; I do not get it. Most probably the may have lost more than 20 to 25 thousands men and women in Eritrea. More than 10 thousand men and women were lost in chasing away ELF from Eritrea in 1982 and now they are bringing them back to Ethiopia to reorganize them. What are all these acts of history? I do not get it?

    Providing 11 billion dollars worth of ammunitions and military hardware to Mengistu’s government who had recruited millions to die in the war front. Eritreans, Tigrayans, Amharas, Oromos and other people died in million. When shall we stop the infightings and defend for the whole of East Africa as our old generations had done so many times in history.

    I evoke Alula aba Nega and Gobena Daccii of Oromia who fought courageously against white colonialism to protect East Africa and why not the new generations from all regions learn from great history of these great generals in the annals of African history and in particular that of Ethiopia. Let us avoid any disruptive bloodsheds in the future. I do not foresee something peaceful in the future of Horn of Africa and
    Ethiopian empire. It does not matter who controls the power eventually the interanational financial and military magnets control all of us. We better unite and fight for the piece of the pie in the Horn of Africa. Let us stop in fighting and fight for all of us East Africans. Let us not get lured to bigger and elusive traps for Africa. Let us learn from Rwanda which has lost more than 800000 people within 120 days. Let us learn from Congo and South Africa. Angola lost millions of dollars and human lives because the opposing factions fought for a very long time a proxy war after liberation and I think we are repeating the same mistake in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Let us not get lured into proxy wars . The presence of China in regions my bring us to a new proxy war soon. I want us to avoid that. Pray; think hard; unite; avoid the invisible traps and refuse to kill for nothing. Let us avoid action for a “ zero Sum.” Fight for greater Horn of Africa and Peace.

    አንዳንዶች “እርሳቸው ዲሞክራሲን ለአፍሪካ ያስተዋወቁ ሰው ናቸው” ይላሉ፡፡ ሙግታቸውንን በማስረጃ ሲያግዙ ደግሞ ይህንኑ የፎቶ ንግድ ዋቢ በማድረግ ነው፡፡ አዲሳባ አራት ኪሎ ጎዳና ‹‹ጃ ያስተሰርያል›› ብሎ የዘፈነ፣ ጎዳና ተዳዳሪን የገጨ አዝማሪ፣ ስንት ሺህ ወጣት የፈጀው ባለመለዮው መንግስቱ፣ ፎቷቸው ከመለስ ጎን በአንድ ላይ ተዘርግቶ ይቸበቸብ የለምን? ለያውም ይህ እየሆነ ያለው አቶ መለስ በስራ ብዛት እንቅልፍ አጥተው ከሚገላበጡበት መኝታ ቤታቸው በትንሽ ርቀት በምትገኘው አራት ኪሎ አደባባይ ነው፡፡ ታድያ በዚህች አገር ዲሞክራሲ የለም ይባላል? ዕድሜ ለብርኒሂጎ!!!

    መቀለ ከአክሱም ሆቴል ቁልቁል የሚገኘው መንገድ መልከ መልካም ካፌዎችና ትኩስ ልጃገረዶች ይበዙበታል፡፡ በዚህም የተነሣ ስፍራውን አዘወትረዋለሁ፡፡ እንደኔው ይህን ስፍራ የሚያዘወትሩ ጠና ያሉ የኔ ቢጤ አሉ፡፡ አቦይ ይባላሉ፡፡ ብዙ ሰው ያውቃቸዋል፡፡ በረንዳ ላይ ቁጭ ብለው ማክያቶ የሚጠጡትን ተስተናጋጆች በየተራ እየተጠጉ “ስለ አቡናረጋዊ” ይላሉ፡፡ ከፊሉ ‹‹ይርደአኹም›› ይላቸዋል፡፡ ‹‹እግዜር ይስጥልኝ›› ማለት ነው በአገሬው ቋንቋ፡፡ ከፊሉም ሳንቲም ይበትንላቸዋል፡፡ እኚህ አዛውንት በተጠጉኝ ቁጥር ከአንገታቸው ላይ ያንጠለጠሉትን ማህተብ እያየሁ እደመማለሁ፡፡ የአቶ መለስ ፎቶ ነው፡፡ እርሳቸውን በአካል አቶ መለስን በቲቪ ሳቃቸው ይኸው ስንት ዘመኔ፡፡ እንዴት በዚህ ሁሉ ዘመን አይለወጡም? መህተቡም ባለማህተቡም ማለቴ ነው፡፡

    የአቶ መለስ ተክለ-ስብእና በትግራይ እየጎመራ እንጂ እየከሰመ አልሄደም፡፡ የእነ ሀየሎምና ስዬ የጦር ሜዳ ጀብዶች ድሮ ድሮ የመለስን ግዝፈት ጋርደውት እንደነበር የተረዳሁት አንደኛው በሞት ሌላኛው በህይወት ከህዝቡ ከተለዩት በኋላ ነው፡፡ አሁን አንድም የትግል አጋራቸው የመለስን ያህል ገዝፎ አይታይም፡፡ “ተራራውን ያንቀጠቀጠው ትውልድ” “ተራራውን ያንቀጠቀጡት ሰው” ወደሚል አፈታሪክ እየተቀየረ መሰለኝ ፡፡

    የመለስ ወዳጆች ስለእርሳቸው ሲያወሩ ራሳቸውን ለመሳት ብዙም አይቀራቸውም፡፡ ልዕለ-ሰብ እንደሆኑ ሽንጣቸውን ገትረው የሚከራከሩላቸው የቤት እመቤቶችና የእውቀት ባላባቶች የትየለሌ ናቸው፡፡ ምሁራኑ ሙግታቸውን በቲዮሪ ይተውሩታል፣ ቤተ-ሙከራ ይዘውት ይገባሉ፣ ሲወጡ ያልነው ትክክል ነበር ይላሉ፡፡

  21. There was no such plan since the beginning of the 80th. If they had such plan to implement, the 1998 border war with Eritrea could have been the best scenario to achieve it. The Ethiopian force was marching to asmara to control the entire region and Tigray could have taken the Afar, Kunama and Saho and set up their own like leadership in asmara to control the rest as independent Eritrea. The split of Woyane did not kill Abay Tigray project if there was because the anti Ethiopia forces are the one who controlled the country and some of them are half Eritreans little sympathy to the rest of Ethiopian ethnics. One example Sebhat Nega told to Tigrayans not to attack Eritrea let them keep the lands for a while since he believes eventually they will be one people one day in the future, Meles has the same thought too.

    Seye, Gebru, Aregach, Tewelde, Alemseged, Abebe Teklahaimanot and others are very nationalist Ethiopians started from their grand fathers and fathers who fought the Italian war defended Ethiopia. The Seye Gebru groups are more to Ethiopians than Eritreans. The Meles groups are more to Tigrigna than Amharic or Ethiopia and if there was a plan for Abay Tigray, they could have pushed to that agenda to materialize. The majority Eritrean trust and have very favorable view for Meles and Sebhat than Seye and Gebru. If Abay Tigray agenda was in the Woyane leadership still the Meles groups have an advantage to put it in to practice after Issayas due to strong relationship Meles with all Eritrean oppositions. The bottom line is the split of Woyane did not kill Abay Tigray rather bolster it by none sympathizers of Ethiopia groups such as Meles in power. The split of Woyane revive the chance of Abay Tigray if there was such plan and killed the strong Ethiopia nationalism among Tigrayan leaders such as Gebru, Seye, Aregach, Tewelde etc…

    The Abay Tigray propaganda is steaming from Shaebia to get credit from Amhara ethnic for their own agenda.

    Everything you are saying is baseless, the border war was nothing to do what Tigray intentions are and never hindered their agenda if there is any. If Eritrea was the real obstacle for Tigray, they had golden chance to destroy them and do what ever they want. Sudan can give Sea access to Tigray if Tigray to declare independent, also if Tigray wants to secede from Ethiopia and Shaebia is the main obstacle, Egypt could have been at the throat of Issayas most likely Egypt could have abandoned Issayas and turn to help Meles in order to fulfill their own long-term interest Abay River.

    The main reason Shaebia printed this phony map of Abay Tigray is to deceive the Eritrean people mainly four ethnics to stay in power.     In history we find NO state called “Tigray” until Atse HaileSillasie created it from the union of “Tigre” and “Agame.” Most of the lands and people the TPLF stole and now occupy as colonizers are historically Gonder territories belonging to historical Dembiya.

    The TPLF mafioso has been expelling Gonder people from Humera and Wolqayit tsegede for over 20 years now. THey have managed to settle thousands and thousands of their disabled veterans in Humera, on lands that were expropriated from Gonder people. In Wolqayit and Tsegede, they have managed to settle thousands of settler Tigre in the name of resettling “Hungry starving Tigres” from central Tigray.

    I am not going to talk about WOllo because it is just so obvious what they have done.

    Let us hope the end of TPLF comes sooner than it seems. Every Wolqayitae is waitinf ro the day they recover all that has been stolen from them.

    Some of us knew what the Weyane plan to do when they went to war with Eritrea except the fact that most of my brothers and sisters in Ethiopia thought that the war was justified and it will bring back Eritrea. If we all remember – between 1998 to 2000 there 3 major offenses by Weyane army against Eritrea. Two times the weyane force did it alone without calling the Ethiopian people to join it. Then when it became difficult to subdue the Eritrean defense force, weyane went and called the Ethiopian public to join the offense to protect the invasion of Eritrea – which it got. It also went and hired pilots from Russia and ex soviet republic to attack Eritrea, hired a satellite to spy on troop movement. It also got close to 400 million dollar cash from Clinton administration to buy food. Funny enough, this was the first time the USA government gave Ethiopia cash and if I am not wrong it was given few months before the offenses and weyane used it to buy weapon from Russia. You may also wonder why Weyane signed the Algeria’s agreement. Most Ethiopian believes that Meles sold out – OR – was it the fact that he had no choice.
    Weeks before the signing, Weyane thought that it could capture Assab and sent the best trained army close to 30-50 thousand to capture Assab and they got a blow 30 km off Eritrean shores. The majorities were Tigrian and they were known as “Kirbit” and they were in flame. After that war – Meles had no choice but to sign, he was running out of weapon, the army cannot hold much longer and if he did not sign – then the table was about to turn.
    You see – in a third world where weapons are purchased for a year just to go to war – the offensive army does not the luxury to continue to fight endlessly. Most wars in Africa last 2-3 weeks – in a convention way and if the army that conduct the offense did not achieve its goal with 2-3 weeks, then it may be possible for the defensive army to attack. And if that happen, the result will be uncontrollable.
    If the Weyane had not signed the deal – it was Eritrean term to attack and thanks to Clinton administration – they had to intervene. Even though the Clinton Administration wants Weyane to control Assab, they cannot see Eritrean Army to do the offensive. The Eritrean had retreated once they understand the force and magnitude and decide to go back to basic and reduce the army into a small guerilla force which makes it difficult for a spy satilite to monitor plus they have all their weapons intact. If you remember, at the start of the war Weyane declared that it has destroyed 30% of Eritrean Army but at the signing of the agreement Meles asked the guarantors to make sure that Eritrean Army will not attack. How is it possible to be attacked if you have destroyed 30 % of it?
    I wrote all this to support Elias article that the dream ended when the war ended and that was the cause of the split within Weyane even though “Seye” behaves as if it was something else. Maybe it is time for Ethiopian to thank Eritrean Defense force for crashing Weyane dream. If they had achieved their goal – the whole horn would have been in flame. My advice to Ethiopian is like it or not – it is time to read and understand who Weyane is and how they got to this point. Ignoring it will extend the misery.

    Inturn Eritrea convinced Tigray to help them out in building greater Eritrea , TPLF agreed for this plan hoping whatever rains for Eritrea will drizle for Tigray. TPLF let evreything rain for Eritrea at the expense of the Ethiopian people for close to seven years until 1998 but didn’t see nothing drizzle for Tigray so the war the changing of currency and so on went between the two leaders. In short the Greater tigray Manifesto died because Eritrea controlled Ethiopias economy between 1991 and 1998 and didnot contribute to the development of Tigray as TPLF hoped.

  43. Tigray has swollen to the point it has become a big province. According to the above Tigray has expande by a good 40%. It has acquired over 11 year round new rivers with all the land acquired is green and rich in minerals. This is not something people will accept and live with. I am afraid Tigray will not get a peace of mind for the next few decades, they are in control of the country at the moment, but two decades after, things are going to get hot, Tigreans who have come from Tigray pushing the other locals whos land is snatched are going to get upset, and fight will erupt.

The only problem with people like #37 is they are trying to rewrite history by making up stuff us they go along while at the same they are systematically eradicating the existence of the people of Welkait Tegede. Note that since they came to power they have resettled approximately 600 thousand people in Welkait Tegede. In Setit Humera alone the Welkait population has been wiped out almost 100 percent. 99.9 percent of Setit Humera residents are now Tigres. What happened to the rest of the Welkait people? That’s the true and factual reality in Welkait Tegede today.

  50. Wow, I never new they had such a plan but it was really nice. That part of eritrea is ethiopian and will be Ethiopian by any means. Any political party who will bring our seaport will get my vote and my full support.
