The death of Greater Tigray manifesto (updated with maps)

In 1976, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (Woyanne) that is currently ruling Ethiopia crafted its Greater Tigray Manifesto. The manifesto called for transforming the northern Ethiopian region of Tigray in to an independent country through expansionist policies. For Greater Tigray to become a reality, Meles Zenawi and his Woyanne comrades decided that they have to take control of the central government in Ethiopia  and systematically dismantle the country. They also appropriated lands from neighboring regions of Gonder and Wollo (see the maps below).

As the map below shows, the Woyanne junta claimed 20 percent of Gonder’s territory and a large area of northern Wollo.

The Greater Tigray agenda suffered a setback when Woyanne went to war with Eritrea in 1998. Woyanne had to scramble and get Ethiopians to support the war by trying to falsely present itself as an Ethiopian nationalist group.

The Woyanne’s war with Eritrea caused split inside the organization’s top leadership, and Meles purged about half of the central committee members, putting the final nail on the coffin of Greater Tigray manifesto.

Currently, TPLF under Meles Zenawi’s leadership is not a cause- or ideology-driven organization any more. It is a business mafia that happens to wield political and military power.

As it turns out, Greater Tigray manifesto is having the unintended consequence of diminishing Tigrean nationalism:

1. A growing number of Tigreans do not want to be associated with TPLF or Tigrean nationalism any more.

2. Other than Mekele, the capital city of Tigray, most parts of the region, including Meles Zenawi’s hometown, Adwa, are still dirt poor and have yet to receive the dividends for TPLF’s political power, despite the enormous wealth the Meles crime family has amassed.

3. Currently, there are over 100,000 non-Tigrean troops in Tigray (a region with a population of 6 million).  As a result, about 1 in every 10 child currently born in Tigray doesn’t have a Tigrean father. Tigreans are also migrating toward south in massive numbers.

4. Woyanne’s investment over the past 20 years has not produced tangible results, other than a few shiny high rise buildings in Mekele. The reason is that the investment was politically-driven, hence poorly studied and planned. The end result of a government-controlled investment or command economy is always a colossal failure. The Soviet Union comes to mind.

In recent days, we are witnessing an encouraging development. The Tigrean elite, the last refuge of Tigrean nationalism, is coming around to finally disowning the Meles dictatorship, although not as fast as we would like it to happen.

A lesson that can be learned from the failure of Greater Tigray Manifesto is that it is in the best interest of all Ethiopian ethnic groups to submit their parochial interest to Ethiopian nationalism. Tigray, Oromo, Amhara, and all the other ethnic groups can flourish under a strong and united Ethiopia.

It is time for all Tigreans to wake up and join other Ethiopians in the fight to remove the Meles vampire regime.

  2. Elias, this is the best article you ever written! Follow this way and able to distinguish the people from the party! This is the only way we can build great Ethiopia! This does not mean I agree with all what you said but I fully agree and admire your approach! The people of Tigray is the poorest and the people with the least democracy relative to other regions! I have been reading Addis Fortune and find a model farmer Beyene from Arsi that Meles choose him to talk about GTP. See what Arsi is? What about the farmers in Tigray? Afar? Wollo? and other areas? Shameful! … I like your approach and please keep it up so that we can have unified and strong push!

    Every Ethiopian knows the heart and minds of our politicians and their supporters (whether Tigres or non-Tigres), and also Ethiopians understand why the ‘Greater Tigray’ goal of TPLF will fail (if it does as you say) or how it might come true.

It is well known that the majority of Tigrians chose to be silent when it comes to the repeated call by other ethnic groups in Ethiopia in the struggle for abolishing the racist, tyrant and ethno-fascist ruling junta from Ethiopia. You can make a small opinion poll yourself and surely you will find out that most Ethiopians have already made their mind when it comes to Tigreans and the realizing of the greater Tigray (as a country). Unfortunately there are no concert resources which encourage the region to make such serious decision…

The aganda was from 1976 and all the leaders of Woyane in that knew vary well and worked hard for that target such of them were Dr Aregawi Berhe 1979-85 and the group of Ato Tewelde W/Mariam-Siye Abraha from 1985-1998 and all was there for the new Great Tigria creating. Their basic agenda were as one Swedish author said on his book fom 1978 “Journey to Eritrea 1969,1975 and 1978” he put their future dream like that “If it is ok Tigria will be free land from Amhara but if we can’t create this image we will try federation with Eritrea and if this plan wouldn’t be easy we are still one Ethiopia but under Autonomy.

Even though most of the leadership in civil and army is still controlled by Tigreans the majortiy of tigreans are still suffering by meles and his tplf criminal group.

    as a result many tigreans are now joined the struggle in several ways to get rid of the tplf mafia and terrorist group who is now committing a crime in the name of tigreans, but one thing most ethiopians should understand is that not only tigreans but also other silent majority ethiopians have responsiblity to join the struggle and remove tplf.

    as i hear from many paltalk rooms, some people are pointing out thier finger on entire tigreans and they are not practically on the struggle while they scream day in and day out tigreans to join the struggle, and whenever any tigrean joins the struggle they label him as weyane, these narrow minded and vagabond people need to be challenged so that many tigreans can even come out and join the struggle. The only thing that we can overcome tplf current regime is by strenghten our unity rather than talking division. Let everyone contributes his/her part towards the struggle.

    The Tigrean elites know meles more than others. Some are abondoning him though, secretly from their families sharing their point to very close friends. Meles’s health is not in good condition. They know that. Only the insane TPLF members and supporters have a cloudy information on Meles’s condition. Most elites do not want to be accountable on the retribution that took place on Oromo and Amhara people in the past 15 to 19 years to mention few. The genocide in Gambella and Ogaden is overt and only it is a matter of time to take the tplf mafia into an international court. I hope all members of the TPLF will be taken to court whether they did wrong or not. You know Hitler supporters and facscist allover the world are still being hunted down 65 years after the death of their master. Some of the Tigrean elites are now doing the most courageous action of dissociating themselves from tplf, not fearing for themselves but for the trepidation that will come to their children and grandchildren. Some are rumored to have said that they need a safe-haven to raise their children with the amassed wealth in the past 19 years and took the action earlier than others.

    Only blind headed members and supporters will still chain themselves with meles. Meles also knows that these tail-wagers are useless and will not keep him safe from any imminent disaster to the tplf mafia. We all know that.

Do you Know why Asab,Welkayt and part of Wollo is given to Tigray becuse the people living there are Tigrians also in the near future Teseney and Barentu will be arranged to be part of Tigray.Tigray,Amhara,Oromia,Gambella ,sidama ,Benshangul-gumiz,….and so many oters are (part of) in Ethiopia.So what is Wrong? As a nationalist, I was not happy on your previuos articles that mainly focus in bashing and degrading Tigrians. Whether we like it or not, they play a major role in keeping mama Ethiopia independent and sovereign. So if we want change in Ethiopia, these are the people that are capable militarily and politically more than anybody right now.

    The dream of “Abay Tigray” as they call it, was dead on arrival. EPLF made it clear to TPLF leadership that the dream of greater Tigray was unattainable from the get go. As a matter of, one of the main friction between EPLF and TPLF was that EPLF refused to allow Tigray to separate from Ethiopia.

First I don’t support melese or his agenda, but when I see an article that is just a fabricated story and all this people comment and thank the writer it is truly sad. We must ask for good journalism if we are to progress as society. Free society as it is what we are demanding to get in diaspora, we should start by asking for good journalism. Let me now get to my point. The article aserts that there are “…100,000 solidgers and 1 in 10 childern from tigray are not fathered by Tigrayans…” this is rather abusred, how did this math calculated, and the same article tells us there are 6 million Tigrayans, let us assume there are4 million woman, of whom 2 million are fertile and ready to have kids. So even if each and every 100 thousand soilidgers were to have 3 kids that is 300 thousand, so you see, this article is a blatent lie , that is writting grabage just stemed from hate, this article is trying to insinuate that the good and cultured woman of tigray are promiscuous and enjoy cheating on their husband, and I beg to differ in that, cause there has not been any scientifc study to show the woman of Tigraye are any more promiscuous than any other culture. LAst the article states their agenda was to creat greater Tigray, if that is the case why that agenda came to a halt becuase of war with eritrea is not given a reason too. It makes no sense for a group to drop such an idea if there was one to begin with that is, when they went to war with Eritrea, if any thing, an idea like that had it beent here, would have been well enterenched with in the core prinicples of the party and the war with ERitrea would have made them a unifying reason for all TPLF to work together. So this is a bancrupated propaganda that has been said over and over again by Shabia to attempt discrdit THE TPLF and to pretend and allign itself with the Ethiopian people.   27. The above article by ER editor is the first of its kind regarding the political situation in Tigray of the Meles regime.
    Some of the points presented are facts. But the sentiments of educated Tigrays is still unknown or undecided.
    Although some Tigrays murmur about the leadership of Meles, some have enjoyed the previledge of being Tigray and to be part of the ruling ethnic group in the contemporary Ethiopia.

    I have often heard from the so-called educated Tigrays and many-overnight-millioners that this situation is favourable for them to loot out the resource of the country and to live in peace and confidence.
    It is a reality of day to day coincidence that many Tigrays go through in any office with a free passport,while other citizens face discrimnation and partiality.
    Mr. ER didn’t mention the livlihood of Tigrays vis à vis non-Tigre citizens in terms of Business, education,military and beurocracy.
    The current regime has built a ladder of hierarchy, whereby the Tigrays have the lion’s share, in spite of the fact that other nationalities deserve to get their real share in the overall system of governance.

    UNLESS the military, national security unit, the police force and other ministries are not proportionally occupied/represented by different nationalities, und unless equal right and democratic freedom is maintained , the one-ethnic-apartheid-rule will perpetuate on the soil of Ethiopia.
    This will be a desasterous phenomenum for our great nation of Ethiopia.

    Hence, the solution is to stay hand in hand to crush with our full force the backbone of the apartheid Woyane regime of Ethiopia.

I am an Eritrean, yet I have been saying over and over that people must be aware that there is big difference between MLLT and the people of Tigray. If one listens to Mr Mola’s interview with OVA, one can easily get the message what Tegadalay Mola was trying to say. So People, please understand the tragedy of the people of Tigray are facing. Meles is black mailing his own people. The sad true, it is working. Because some people believe, as factual true when Ethio TV says the government is building this and that to the people of Tigray. It is true, there are many opportunistic Tigreans and some are immigrating with huge sum of Ethiopian people’s money and investing in foreign lands; because they don’t believe the government will say forever. But those don’t represent the Tigray people the same way the Hodams don’t represent the other ethnic groups. Who is protecting MLLT? Mr. Elias put it correctly. Who is dying in any war that is going on in Ethiopian? Mr. Elias also put it systematically. So if all non Tigrayans TPLF soldiers defected to the rebels, how many soldiers do you thing TPLF will have??
    Ethiopians must work together to eliminate the blood suckers once for all.

  31. This is the problem with every ruling elite in Ethiopia since the its modern inception with emperor Minelik. The ruling elite may say they have haughty goals but they find out governing without the consent of the governed is not as easy as they imagined and they turn to big powers to protect them. Their goal simply becomes survival and enrichment of the ruler, his family and his servants.

    This is what is going on with Melles today, the TPLF used the poor people of Tigray as a convenient way to get to power, once it got power in Ethiopia Melles realized he can’t rule the majority of Ethiopians so he simply surrendered to western powers for protection, they keep him in power by any means necessary and he enriches himself, his family and his yes men. That’s what is going on in Ethiopia today, the poor people of Tigray don’t get anything but are caught between a rock and a hard place.

    Nothing stays the same in perpetuity, now even Tigrayans are starting to realize that they have been had, it is high time to reconcile with their Ethiopian brothers and sisters before things turn ugly.

Let us also admit what is the truth. Compare what we are accepting and what is the truth. The fact of the matter is that there are many, many Tigrayans benefiting under this regime. There was no such thing as Greater Tigray– it might had been in the minds of TPLF shiftas (bandits) namely, Meles, Sibhat, Aregawi and Seyoum all anti Ethiopia and anti Tigray and narrow individuals who tried to do the unthinkable that is to to dismantle Ethiopia into ethinically fractured nation and in the process tried to make Tigrai a country– where in the world do you get such an idea?. Obviously these ill-educated communists don’t know the history of Ethiopia and why Ethiopia lasted for more than 3000 years, these idiots should have been silenced long ago. Tigrians be it the mass or the elites consider Tigray historically to be part and parcel of the greater Ethiopia as championed fiercely by Emperor Yohaness and Emperor Minilk– their tradition still echos in the minds of majority of Tigrians to this day. The adwa bandas– Meles and Sibhat and their extended blood soaked relations tell us that Ethiopia has a history of 100 years, come again? even the awraja that they hail from that is Adwa has a history of 350 years– the people of Adwa by the way are not ethnic Tigray, they are ethnic ‘wa’ who came from the shores of north eastern Eritrea (formerly known as Mereb-milash) and started to settle in current day Adwa and adopted the language Tigrigna and came to live with the people of Tigray (Enderta and Tembien) and Tigre (Axum and Shire) and Agame–the house of Shum Agame Weldu. Now to make a correction on Elias’ article, the lands north of the province of wello– Azebo and Raya as well as north of Gondar and north west of Semien–Welkait and Tselemt had been historically administered under the province of Tigray if you go back before 1943 before the first Woyane happened these were allways part of Tigray, even the Tigrai lords of the Zemene mesafint up until Emperor Tewdrose’s ascend to power (1855) ruled these areas under their dominions. Tigray lost some parts of northern wello, parts of Semien, welkait and Tselemt after the 1943 woyane rebellion as a punishment for their revolt by Emperor Hailesellassie and it was only after 1991 some of these districts were incoroporated back into Tigray. The returning of what rightfuly belongs to Tigray shouldn’t be the point of outrage, after all Tigray will allways be part and parcel of Ethiopia but we are outraged in the fabrication and distortion and missinformation of our proud history by the bandas: Meles and his extended shamless mafia relations, who were once outsiders (who came from the shores of red sea) but b/c of the hospitability of the people of Tigray and Ethiopia were acepted into the civilized and rightous people of Ethiopia. But, they chose to pay us back by destryoing and distorting the proud history of Tigray which is the foundation of Ethiopia. Shame on them.

    The jouney that Zinawi and members of the crimefamily travelled had been bloody and violent;as bloody and violent it is now,many Ethiopians lost thier lives and many more Ethiopians have been hurt and lost opportunities to live in peace and tranqulity.Our main goal must be to remove the fake Ethiopians who are looting and killing Ethiopians;this fake Ethiopians have many faces that is changing as time goes by;the changing faces don’t have permanent home,don’t have real people with them,don’t have power and courage;they are simply having guns and bullets to keep our country in absolute disadvantage.We must keep all eyes on Zinawianrobbers and fix them as needed because they are the enemies of Ethiopia.

  43. Abay Tigrai: A dream, nothing but a dream.

    Abay Tigrai’s dream failed miserably when Woyane lost the war against Eritrea in 1998 to 2000 EC. Here are the details in short:
    1) Woyane lost almost 100,000 of its best fighters (Tigraians) in miscalculation, hoping “Big Brother” would help all the way.
    2) Shaebia’s army remained intact. New breed took over.
    3) PIA remained in power. Anthony Lake’s shuttle diplomacy, clandestine coup-d’etat, failed miserably.
    4) No Assab to be conquered in the name of Ethiopia.
    5) Asmara remained under the control of Shaebia.
    6) Eritrea’s economy remained viable, despite David Shinn’s pseudo analysis.
    7) Deported Eritrean Ethiopians were assimilated in Eritrean nationalism. Deported Eritreans never became Eritrea’s burden.
    8) All Ethiopian opposition groups remained active and kicking.
    9) Woyane again miscalculated in Somalia, opening its rear end wide.
    10) Woyane lost at Hague etc, etc, etc…

    The infantile mafia, with the West’s state of the art military hardware and pilots, monetary support and diplomatic sabotage might have won battles here and there but lost the war altogether.
    As a result of this strategic loss, no Woyane mafia could be functional as a political entity.

    Those who are Tgringnia speakers in Gondar region(except for the Wolkit and Tegadye people) and Wello region are recent immigrants. In my life time I have seen the demographic changes taking place due to locust infestation of harvests and recurring famines in Tigray . The most recent occupied land from Gondar Region is what customary known as Ye-gedam-Irrist or Land of the Geddam (Monastery) that monastery is called “Wadibba”. This land was sacred to the people of Gondar before the invasion of the Italians. The occupation of that land started during the battle of shre’e Enda-Slassie, between the army of Dej, Ayalaw Birru and the Italian army. The people of Gondar welcomed the new comers and assisted them with there satelment. This movement continued unabated until Waynye came to power. Since then Waynye has moved thousands more people in order to change the demographic balance of the area. In today’s terminology it is called ethnic cleansing. It is the same story in the Wello region. So why do you want to incorporate the land that belonged to other region? If you base your logic based on language aren’t there tigringia speaking on the other side of the Merreb river? You scared, huh?

    Shabia and TPLF are the same to me ( for that matter I do not feel the people of Tigray are more Ethiopian than the people Eritrea). The only difference is that at some point Shabia and TPLF claimed that they were colonized and Shabia stayed the course while TPLF flipped-filoped because there is more money to be made by becoming a new born Ethiopian.
