In 1976, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (Woyanne) that is currently ruling Ethiopia crafted its Greater Tigray Manifesto. The manifesto called for transforming the northern Ethiopian region of Tigray in to an independent country through expansionist policies. For Greater Tigray to become a reality, Meles Zenawi and his Woyanne comrades decided that they have to take control of the central government in Ethiopia and systematically dismantle the country. They also appropriated lands from neighboring regions of Gonder and Wollo (see the maps below).
As the map below shows, the Woyanne junta claimed 20 percent of Gonder’s territory and a large area of northern Wollo.

The Greater Tigray agenda suffered a setback when Woyanne went to war with Eritrea in 1998. Woyanne had to scramble and get Ethiopians to support the war by trying to falsely present itself as an Ethiopian nationalist group.
The Woyanne’s war with Eritrea caused split inside the organization’s top leadership, and Meles purged about half of the central committee members, putting the final nail on the coffin of Greater Tigray manifesto.
Currently, TPLF under Meles Zenawi’s leadership is not a cause- or ideology-driven organization any more. It is a business mafia that happens to wield political and military power.
As it turns out, Greater Tigray manifesto is having the unintended consequence of diminishing Tigrean nationalism:
1. A growing number of Tigreans do not want to be associated with TPLF or Tigrean nationalism any more.
2. Other than Mekele, the capital city of Tigray, most parts of the region, including Meles Zenawi’s hometown, Adwa, are still dirt poor and have yet to receive the dividends for TPLF’s political power, despite the enormous wealth the Meles crime family has amassed.
3. Currently, there are over 100,000 non-Tigrean troops in Tigray (a region with a population of 6 million). As a result, about 1 in every 10 child currently born in Tigray doesn’t have a Tigrean father. Tigreans are also migrating toward south in massive numbers.
4. Woyanne’s investment over the past 20 years has not produced tangible results, other than a few shiny high rise buildings in Mekele. The reason is that the investment was politically-driven, hence poorly studied and planned. The end result of a government-controlled investment or command economy is always a colossal failure. The Soviet Union comes to mind.
In recent days, we are witnessing an encouraging development. The Tigrean elite, the last refuge of Tigrean nationalism, is coming around to finally disowning the Meles dictatorship, although not as fast as we would like it to happen.
A lesson that can be learned from the failure of Greater Tigray Manifesto is that it is in the best interest of all Ethiopian ethnic groups to submit their parochial interest to Ethiopian nationalism. Tigray, Oromo, Amhara, and all the other ethnic groups can flourish under a strong and united Ethiopia.
It is time for all Tigreans to wake up and join other Ethiopians in the fight to remove the Meles vampire regime.

Brnihigo is a gray colored bird observed during October-January, whereas Ye Meskel Wef is highly coloreful beatiful bird observed during a short period of time September-October, just after the end of the rain season. But unfortunately I do not know the scientific names of these birds. I hope someone can help us by telling the scientific names of these birds.
But I find the discussion very interesting and should be continued untill the problem is solved in favor of the peoples who are forced to be part of an ethnic (Tigray) which they do not belong to.

A book by Aaron Tesfaye, titled, “Political power and ethnic federalism: the struggle for democracy in Ethiopia”, gives us the evidence that Tigray was actually stripped off its territories post 1943 woyane rebellion, in the book, page 12, Aaron Tesfaye writes ” The region of Tigray, for example, had previously lost two districts in the west (Wolkait and Tselemt) to the province of Gondar and Wello as punitive measures following the 1943 woyane rebellion” he goes on to say, ” the areas were returned during the transitional period, meaning when EPRDF came to power and Tigray relinquished part of its eastern territories, and Afar was expanded to include most of eastern wollo, parts of north eastern Shoa.” Once again confirming my earlier statement. You can read books by the renowned Ethiopian historians the likes of Gebru Tarek and Bahru Zewde on this topic please. To add another historical evidence on the territories that was taken from Tigray is a book by John Young, titled, “Peasant revolution in Ethiopia: the Tigray People’s Libration front, 1975-1991″, on page 52 Young gives a collaborative testament of post 1943 Tigray’s loss of territories, he writes, ” Tigray’s boundaries were also re-drawn and the area that the Raya/Azebo Tigrians inhabited was assigned to Wello.”
On Tigrian feudal lords who ruled some parts of Semien and north western Gondar
According to James Bruce, in his “Travels to Discover the source of the Nile, in the years 1768…., Volume 3 and page 5, he tells us that Tigray over lords had actually alternated with their Begemeder counter parts in ruling most of northern Gondar, in page 5, Bruce writes, ” Semien, a very mountainous region, between the rivers of Tacazze and Coror; which included the kingdoms of Lasta, Gouliou, Wag, Tsama which belongs to the Agews and several more possessed by mountains who are often rebellious and independent had native chiefs who acknowledged as their superiors the governor of Tigre, Enderta-Tigray or Begemeder by turns as suites their own interests and inclination.” Again, Tigray used to be a very big province but due to Emperor Haileselassie’s punative measures, the province lost something like no less than 30% of its teritorial possession especically in its southern and western frontiers. This is a fact supported by countless history books. Therefore what Ethiopian review has showed to be the re-drawn map of Tigray post 1991 is infact what used to be the historical map of Tigray before 1943 as the evidence indicates in the above refered books.

Iam a proud amhara from gonder, and Iam also ashamed to say that I belong to a particular ethiopian ethnic group in this day and age. The ethiopian people as a whole do not care whether you have an ethnic agenda or not. The people of ethiopia want democracy now period. We the people of ethiopia, for the longest have been repressed. That’s why we belame one another frequently. We need to stop it now if we are to go forwad for our country’s sake. As an Oromo, we stand by our own foot and regain our lands and property sooner or later from all the northern. No one to choose from Mr Elias. They are all the same and responsible for the crimes they committed against others be Ethiopians, Oromians or the southerners. If you are Gondares, organize your siblings to get what you have been lost. I used to admir your Joirnalistic professional input, but this time I disagree with your opinion on the matter. The dream of greater Tigray is a well planned by the expenses of Ethiopians and Eritreans. It was EPLF who trainned them and brought to Finfinne palace. For that matter they felt humilated and declare a war against their master by pretending as if they are Ethiopian nationalist for their hidden revenge. The TPLF planned by invading Eritrean they can change the demographic of Eritrea ,the new generation injected by the Tigray father- militarly occupying become the realization of Greater Tigray encluding Asseb but which failed by the Hero Eritreans led them their targate failled. Then in 2006 the TPLF invaded Somlia for another masked face to serve as a puppet for the west interest where we lost our innocent brothers and sisters on both sides for the sake to preserve Greater Tigray .
This is the melo- drama the TPLF is playing by the expenses of Ethiopian name. In reality, the TPLF is the worest enemy, Ethiopia may practiced in her memorial history . The period you are referring to (i.e. pre 1943) is during which our country Ethiopia was controlled by fascist Italians. The Italians similar to what the Woyane regime is doing today attempted to divide Ethiopia on ethnic basis and to accomplish this goal they took Welkait Tegede and incorporated it with Tigray and Eritrea.
Like I said earlier what you are referring is a modern history of the region. If you are basing your argument on this snippet of history I suggest you also go and take part of Eritrea as well. In fact there is a good premise to do so given that these people of Eritrea also speak Tigrigna. This is where your argument falls short of explaining the entire history of the region.
Just because Tigray lost part of its eastern territories does not justify for it to grab other people’s territory through a twisted logic.
The history and existence of Welkait Tegede dates back to the times of Axum civilization.

dear Dejazmach and Yigermal, my grand father was 109 years old when he died in 1979. God bless his soul, he was a nobleman and a historian. Please allow me to brush up for you honorables. I would really be greatfull if you address his highness Ras wube as ras not dejazmach. After all, he was the father of w/r Tirunesh; the mother of Prince Alemayeuh Tewdros. Atse Tewdros married w/r Tirunesh in order to avoid war between the Tigreans and the Atse. Therefore, Ras wube was the ruler of Siemen, adwa, axum,and shire. The other half of Tigray was governed by his cousin Dejazmach or later negus Teklegeorgis. As for his ethnicity, Ras wube was half agaw and half Tembene.Ras wube was also related to Shum-Temben-Mirch. Ras Wube conspired with his Dejazmach and Fitwarari sons to kill Atse Tewdros at Megedela. They were catured and imprisoned, but his relative Dejazmach Kassai, later Ase Yohannes escaped to Enderta because he also plotted to kill Atse Tewdros with Ras Wube.

Some of your accounts about Etegye (not w/r) Tiru-Work Wubye being a wife of Atse Tewodross is correct. And price Alemayehu being a grand son of Dej. Wubye is also correct. However, you are twisting and misrepresenting facts to fit your own interest.
First Dej. Wubye Haylemariam is not a Tigre in today’s sense. During his time the current Tigray as one geographical entity was not in existence. Places like the Agame and Enderta were recognized as “Ye-Balabt Ager” by people form Waag and Lasstta of Wello” as well as Beggemidr and Simmien of Gondar”. Therefore, I am not surprised if one of Dej. Wubye’s grand parents come from one of these places but that does not make him a Tigre.
The important historical events are these
1. Dej. Wubye did not elevate his title to Ras and was not that important for him. (Then the title Dej was not easily acquired but latter; especially, during the Hailesselsie era people started giving themselves all type of rank similar to the Weyanye cadre’s giving themselves a Masters degree)
2. His lineage goes like this: From the native of north Gondar form ALLOS-> from Karlos->from Kassa->from Gabrye(RAS)-> from Haylu(Dej.) and his mother W/r Min-Taye, a native of Jana-Mora. He is the uncle of Etegye Taytu of Minilik. (Girma Ejigu, Birhanu Melku. YE-Dej. Wubye Tareek-Ena-Ye_Tserha Tsion-Kiddist Deressgye-Mariam Ameseraret, Myazia(April 13,200 E.C, pg 18)
3. Dej. Wubye was the most powerful prince whose territories spanned all the way to the Red sea with offices set up in Hawzeien (Tigray) and Hariqiqo (near Masswa) /Eritrea for 40 years. This is to say no rivalry all the way through and through. Therefore, I do not understand your assertion , “Atse Twodross married Dej. Wubye’s daughter for fear of rivalry from Tigrians.”
4. Dej. Wubye was the first Ethiopian prince to establish foreign trade. In 1853, he signed trade agreements with Germany, Italy, Austria, Turkey and Egypt.
5. When Atse Tewodros was waging war against the prices of the time, Dej. Wubye belittled him as inconsequential. Similar to the line of thinking of the Dergue about Weyanye. However, Kassa moved with the huge army from the lowlands to the highlands operated a surprise attack on Dej. Wubye’s place. With all of his obstacles out of the way, he became Atse Tewodross at the very church constructed by Dej. Wubye. From there on Dej. Wubye was taken to Meq-Della and stayed there in-house arrest until he died in 1860.
Your assertion that Atse Yohannis conspired with Dej. Wubye to kill Tewodros at Meq-Della must be a hallucination. Firs, the numbers do not add up. Atse Yohanns would have been a teenage boy during that time. Second, he was not that high up in the social ladder to be able to do what you claimed. So, it is all fabrications! It is tantamount to saying “Atse Hailessilasie conspired with Meles Zenawi to kill Ras Seyum. What a lie!

You know, people from other parts of Ethiopia don’t know who TPDM or DEMHIT are. But, Every Tigrian including me knows them well. They are people who where arrested because they stole propoperites, some of them are people who failed grade 10 exams, and the rest of them are people who have different crime records. And some of them are Eritreans added to fight Ethiopia as part of their plan to destablize Ethiopia. I am telling you solid facts. As someone from the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea, this is very true. No Tigrian supports them abelieves they will win.
They are becomming Shaebiya instruments to destablize Ethioia. Once again, this is the fact.
As for the the Great Tigray, this is how EthiopianReview can continue spreading its hateredness against the people of Ethiopia. If there was such a dream, what prohibited them from materializing it? I remember it was frequently broadcast by the shaebian radio “Dmtsi Hafash” during the Ethio-Eritrea war. And, Elias is repeating it now and again. Shaebia was broadcasting this at that time to persuade his people into war front. To make them false patriots. The fact is, Shabiya started the war by conquering part of Ethiopia, and this was how the war was broke out. TPLF (as you used to represent Ethiopian government though I don’t agree with it) didn’t start this war to materialize its Great Tigray Manifesto. This is the truth.

To Welkaitew (#102)—–in 1943 Ethiopia was under the control of his Majesty Emperor Haileselassie,
Italian second invasion of Ethiopia happened from 1936-1941. The Tigray woyane rebellion took place 2 years after the Italians were kicked out of Ethiopia that is in 1943 and during this time Emperor Haileselassie had been re-instated to his throne and was the sovereign ruler of Ethiopia. The Woyane rebellion mostly took place in southern Tigray— Raya/Azebo, Enderta/Wajirat, and in Tembien. The top leaders of the rebellion were almost all from Enderta-Tigray namely— Fetawrari Yeebiyou Woldai (Wodi Woldai)—from Didiba-dergiajen-Enderta, Basha Gugusa Mengesha—from Hintalo—Enderta, Dejazmatch Bezabeh Negussie from Enderta and Hailemariam Reda from Enderta. The rebellion lasted for almost half a year and had devastated the Haileselassie regime, and thousands of the imperial army were killed and hundreds captured, Emperor Haileselassie through his top commander, the celebrated and patriotic gorilla leader during the Italian occupation of Ethiopia, Ras Abebe Aregai couldn’t subdue the rebellion so they authorized with the assistant of the Royal British Air force that was stationed in Aden-Yemen, the bombardment of Southern Tigray mostly, Raya/Azebo, Enderta/Wajirat and as a result thousands of civilians were killed, it was only this time that the rebellion was sort of neutralized, the woyane warriors were overwhelmed by the British air superiority and the uprising started to cool-off. It was during the aftermath of the Woyane rebellion of 1943 that Tigray was stripped off something like 30% of its territorial possession as a punitive measures for the rebellion: Raya/Azebo, from southern Tigray and Welkait / Tsegede from south western Tigray were taken from Tigray and were incorporated to Wello and Gondar respectively. For historical reference please see the above books that I refered as evidences at my comment in # 102

Ras Wube Hailemariam of Semien, was Governor of Semien from 1826-1855 and Governor of Tigray from 1831-1855, at the height of the Zemene Mesafint (Ras Wube was actually rewarded the government of Tigray when he assisted in handing over of the then Overlord of Tigray and Merebmilash (Eritrea)from 1818-1831, Dejazmatch Subagadis Weldu of Agame-Tigray to Ras Dori of Begemeder, the then imperial regent during the zemene mesafint) What happened was, Dejazmatch Subagadis had killed Ras Mari of Begemeder who was the brother of Ras Dori and in retaliation, Ras Dori killed Dejazamtch Subagadis and gave Dejazamtch Wube of Semien the government of Tigray and also promoted Dej. Wube to the rank of Ras in 1831 as a reward.
To Shemelis (#117)—your account and analysis of that periods history is very excellent and thanks for clarifying that Enderta, Tembien and Agame were “Ye balabat ager” but a minor correction about Ras Wube Hailemariam, he was Dejazmatch from 1826-1831 but was promoted by Ras Dori the imperial regent (Enderasse), he was also rewarded with the government of Tigray and Mereb Milaash (Eritrea) as a reward for his assistant in handing over Dej. Subagadis Weldu of Agame to Ras Dori.
Who was Ras Wube Hailemariam?
Ras Wube Hailemariam of Semien, Governor of Semien 1826-1855 and Tigray 1831-1855, himself half Enderta-Tigrian (not Tembien) and half Amhara (his father is Dejazmatch Hailemariam Gebre, son of Sahlitu Keflayesus of Enderta and Ras Gebre Tesfa of semien (a catholic), governor of Semien from 1785-1815, —-Ras Woldeselassie of Enderta was his Overlord and Ras Gebre was married to Ras Woldeselassie’s younger sister Sahlitu Kefleyesus and had a son, Dejazmatch Hailemariam Gebre who fathered Ras Wube Hailemariam). Ras Araya Dimtsu of Enderta succeeded Ras Wube Hailemariam through forces of arms. Ras Araya Dimtsu of Enderta became governor General of Tigray and Semien from 1855-1863 when Ras Wube Hailemariam was defeated by Dejazamtch Kassa Hailu (the future Emperor Tewdros) of Dembya at the battle of Deresge in 1855 ending the era of zemene mesafint. Dejazmatch Kassa Hailu of Dembya was proclaimed Emperor Tewdros II and ruled Ethiopia from 1855-1868.
By the way Emperor Tewdrose’s second wife, Empress Tiruwerk Wube, is the daughter of Ras Wube Hailemariam of Semien and Tigray who died while accompanying her son Lij Alemayehu Tewdros to England, but she died on the way to the shores in 1868 and was buried in Chelekot Selassie Monastry- Enderta, Tigray where she had her relatives on her father side living at that time at Chelekot-Enderta, Tigray.
#115-Desalegn. I hate to respond to your wild all-over-the-place ramblings. However, cadres like you need some sense of reality check before you are taken seriously. If that does not get through, then your a lost cause and the best thing to do is ignore you. But before I ignore you for good, let me attempt one last time:
1. I didn’t say I am Amhara, I only told you that you are not. By the way, nick names used here don’t mean anything, as you can make up any name. Unless you are naive and foolish (I suspect you are), and that is a bad line of argument.
2. Your latest comment entry actually gave you away that you are indeed a weyanne agent. Only a weyane talks about Mengistu and Derg as being an ethnic abuser ad nausea. Derg was dictatorial
and brutal, but never focused on ethnic brutality like TPLF. That of course, does not diminish the fact that both the Derg and TPLF are both dictatorial and brutal regimes. But you need to distinguish who’s who when you analyze them deeply.
3. I have a feeling you are mixing people you are communicating with here, as you seem obsessed to be involved and blabbering with several commentators. still my advise to you is, to stay focused on the topic and carefully read, so you wont be confused how to deliver your point across.

Most of the Ras Wube Hailemariam’s historical accounts you have written are correct, except one. How did Tigray come about?
Historically, in current day Tigray, there existed, 4 autonomous provinces namely: Enderta, Tembien, Agame and Tigre (Axum, Shire and much later Adwa was incorporated in to Tigre from Hamasien of Merebmilash). Enderta, Tembien and Agame were historically autonomous provinces with their own native chiefs who ruled countless districts along side their dominions. Enderta and Tembien were the closest towards each other since they shared very similar culture and also helped one another when ever they were in war with neighboring provinces, they also shared similar law, customs, culture and governance for hundreds of years and in the mid 1800’s the ruling chiefs of Enderta and Tembien decided to incorporate both provinces and in the process create one big autonomous province combining both Enderta and Tembien and to be ruled by a single overlord from their own combined provinces and a marriage was arranged between the family of Dejazmatch Dimtsu Debbab of Enderta, the then chief of that province and the family of Dejazmatch Wolde kidan wolde kirkos him self, the then Shum of Tembien. The daughter of Dej. Debbab of Enderta, Amate Silas Dimtsu was given to the son of Dejazmatch Wolde kidan Wolde Kirkos, by the name of Dejazmatch Mircha Wolde Kidan and had 5 childrens among those was Dejazmatch Kassa Mircha (the future Emperor Yohaness). What you wrote isn’t right, I suggest you to read a book about what happened to the families of Emperor Tewdros in 1868 after the Meqdala war b/n General Napier and Emperor Tewdros. General Napier returned to England via Tigray and gave all his weapons to Dejazmatch Kassa Mircah on his way to the shores, that’s when Empress Tiruwerk died and was burried at Chelekot Monastry in Enderta. For starters, you can read a well written account of post Meqdala war, titled, “The Ethiopians A History” by Richard Pankhurst.

Man, when we get the real responsible governor then we will find a real book to read. I took history classes long time a go during the Derg rigim, I think at that time it was better to be true except some of the story of Janhoy. But at this time every body had written a forged story that they thought it would help them for better living. So it is hard which is which.

My father was a guerilla fighter against the Italians when he was very young unmarried man, he was the leader of his group and him with his group was responsible to set fire one of the biggest Italian base and killed many Italian solders from the bomb explosion planted around the chunky bushes and tall grasses surrounding the hill of the base to shill themselves from enemies. The Italians forced to move their base to another place and my father with his unit was the last person to come home after the Italian left Ethiopia. When Hailesellassie came back from exile my father again join the Woyane moments and fought with follow Tigrayans. Let me say that the numbers of soldiers that scarified for the liberation of Eritrea from TPLF is very important and even if it was one person. They must be recognized and appreciated. Your estimation about the strength of the TPLF army at the time is very inaccurate. In the summer of 1980 there were hundreds of young Tigrayans who were flocking to training centers. By the way I want every body to know that Queen Victoria loved Alemayehu Tederos. His queen mother died on her way to England in Tigray state. The baby prince was taken to London. He was being trained and lived in the British palaces among the young family members of the queen.
He died at a very young age. The queen order her commanders and care takers to bury the body of young Alemayehu in her Windsor Palace which is located about fifty miles out of London. His name was engraved on the tomb in English but when the late King Hailes Selassie of Ethiopia visited The Windsor Palace sometimes in Early sixties the name was again in scripted in Amharic, I think to impress the visitors. That was done when the current queen of England was very young and had visited Ethiopia at the invitation that was extended to her by King Haile Sellassie. The Palace is packed with images and instruments of violence. Insignias, guns and swards and uniforms of all types of military regiments from antiquities cover the walls and the beautiful ceilings of the many chambers of the Palace. Most probably General Napier might have been entertained and decorated in the Windosor or Buckingham Palace when he came back to England after his Expedition to The Ethiopian Empire. It was a big deal that cost England 9000 000 British pounds.
British have been aspiring to colonize Ethiopia for a very long time. At least starting since the reign of King Sahele Sahile Silasee of Shewa. They are still working on it and partially successful in getting some parts of the Oromo Land in which constitutes three provinces of current Kenya. General Gordon came to met with Ras Ali of Wallo while he was the king of Ethiopia to spy on the conditions of the country. He backed of when he saw the conditions were not favorable to British involvements. Before that to extend their rules in East Africa they had so many spies sent to Harar to see what was going on in Harar. During the 1980 the British had involved themselves and they were monitoring the conditions in the country from all over East Africa. They labord hard over this issue to convince many Tplf version of historical Dogma.Dejazmach of Tigre and Halafi Mengedi respectively believe tplf position is justified.
This makes the whole matter crystal clear to me. I fully believe now the Tseye group and the ruling tplf are substantially the same on the issue and of Greater Tigray.

Your analysis of historical facts are a bit out-of- place. When you addressed ras Webineh, you addressed Bitewoded Adane Mekonnen as Dejazmach. First off, let me tell you who ras Amoraw Webineh is. Grazmach Amoraw Webineh did not get the rank of Ras from Atse Hailesellase. He barely got it from the people of Armacho and Chaqo. Even that was illegal; because one needs 500,000 votes in order to aquire the rank of Ras at the time of war or the Imperial himself must award it. His highness, atse Hailesellase insisted, despite the fact Amoraw was brave, he refused to give it to him. However, the Atse offere him the rank of Dejazmachnet, Amoraw refused admantly.
