Following the recent article by Andargachew Tsige, which has revisited Kinijit’s method of peaceful struggle, there is a growing debate within the Kinijit family about whether it is possible to wage a peaceful struggle in Ethiopia in the face of the extremely repressive measures and brutal tactics that are being used by the ruling Tigrean People Liberation Front (Woyanne) to silence the opposition. The Woyanne went as far as forcing Kinijit leaders to change the party’s name. As a result, several Kinijit parliamentarians and council members are currently in exile. Recently, five prominent Kinijit MPs went to Asmara and they are currently exploring the possibility of establishing provisional Kinijit headquarters in Asmara. The Kinijit leaders in Ethiopia should stay out of this debate if they want to stay out of jail. No body expects them to advocate any thing other than peaceful struggle. In this regard, the recent statement by Wzt. Birtukan Mideksa preaching about peaceful struggle has no useful purpose. Such a debate can and needs to take place among Ethiopians in the Diaspora, since we are free to express our honest views in this matter without fear of getting arrested or killed. In order to facilitate the debate, Ethiopian Review is conducting a poll. Please vote and express your views.

No matter what you guys try nothing will defeat woyane. Keep dreaming!
Dear Girma(ethiomedia) with all du respect I completely disagree with your assertion that peace full straggle Will bring meaning full change in the heart of TPLF is being dinguses with the people of Ethiopia ,But I will completely agree with you that military straggle must coordinate with political solution. We must fight back this evil who discriminate us because we not for Gold tribe, we should fight back a buster who killed our sister and brother in day light in there own city; we should fight back this arrogance that don’t have any interest about us except THE GLODIN>>>>>?
Dear Kassahun T When we say we have to fight TPLF the only way he knows that means we have to be like them and there is no democracy, and peacefull transitionin in our country.
Where as we tring to wage the war by remot. Every body is bringing his family to where they eat three meal and let the poor and the one who don’t have nothing fight TPLF.Is what we want, no. We don’t need blood shade we have enough.
My Ethiopian brethren, true freedom is not given to you by the people in power, the so called elections conducted and “won” by Woyane are not elections at all, they are designed to keep woyane in power, Woyane is beholden to their masters and will do what their masters tell them to stay in power, Woyane can’t rule Ethiopia on their own, they need a massive infusion of aid from their masters to stay in power, now please wake up and learn from Eritrea, we got our freedom through our muscle not by begging or any kind of fake elections or democracy. In Ethiopia there are already functioning armed opposition groups who are working together to get rid of Woyane, if the Kinjit members don’t wake up and support these opposition groups they will be left on the sidelines, Kinjit members in the diaspora need to align themselves with the forces of freedom now or risk being alienated in the long run. Woyane will never give up power peacefully, that is an unttainable dream.
the irony of ethiopian society seems to have continued irrespective of revolutions that had been taken to curve our country political, economy and social crises.in my opinion, the concept of change has been either misinterpreted or intentinally corrupted by our political parties.the question should be what could be done to change our country images rather than what kind of method should kinijt take. keep in mind ,unless we are united and focus on the burning issues that our country has faced,we will achieve nothing.what we need is evolution rather than revolution ,thus i tend to adevocate peacful means.enough hate and killing folks !our country problem is not only weyane or kinjit problem ,it’s rather our problem and we required to do things as one ppl. first let us built party basd on ideas rather than tribes and let us have one voice regard to united ethiopia.when we do that i am more than certain that we can acieve something if not for this generation but next generation.
I think, instead of two, we should have been given three choices on this name changing business:
Choice 1. Peaceful struggle
Choice 2. Arms struggle
Choice 3. Joining the Meles regime and then bringing a change within the regime.
CUD should continue its peaceful struggle!
Armed struggle is not new idea, and lots of groups are trying it, but not as such a promising victory so far.
So, if there is better group rising being armed against Woyanne, no need of authorization and can proceed. If successful, people will support it. Currently, whatever the means, the Ethiopian people needs to bring down the the Woyanne tribal-regime.
Even the Shabia army is not capable of defeating the woyanne soldiers leavealone the Ethiopian Diaspora!
peaceful stragle is preferable when our kinijit leaders when they went to jail the movement stop becouse of some hodam and lesltan bkumu so I need to stik with peacfule stragle
Let’s balance : war/peace. And Let Ethiomidia remain in the middle as usual. uncommited confused.
yes, it is about time we fight back!
1. What is peace?
2. What is peaceful struggle?
3. Does peace mean absence of WAR?
4. How do those who struggle peacefully (both within Ethiopia & in Diaspora) believe that a peaceful struggle is the only option regardless of the situation on ground; namely the continuation of TPLFs brutality, the absence of support from world powers (specially from US) to Ethiopian oppressed people, the continuous support of world powers (specially from US) to TPLF brutal regime?
5. Why should TPLF always prefer to play the game on its play court? Is it because that it is the sole player of the game and even because it is both the player and the judge?
6. How on earth do peaceful struggle proponents argue that they can bring a change in Ethiopia, though TPLF is the sole player of the game and even though that it is both the player and the judge of the game?
7. Do proponents of peaceful struggle believe that there is a change of heart from TPLF side that enable them to make a change by continuing their peaceful struggle? If so what change has been observed after the 2005 election?
8. If armed groups keep on their struggle in ousting TPLF by force, what will be the parliamentarian oppositions (including the new kinijit party) stand regarding the movement of the armed groups?
9. If armed groups keep on their struggle in ousting TPLF by force, Will the parliamentarian oppositions (including the new kinijit party) condemn the armed groups and thereby give TPLF a go ahead to counter attack and destroy the Ethiopian armed movements? If so why?
10. If parliamentarian oppositions (including the new kinijit party) can not resist any decision that TPLF parliament passes then what is the use of participating in such a totally TPLF dominated parliament, other than legitimising the TPLF government and give it a positive image that it never deserves ?
11. Is it TPLF (or messengers of TPLFs) that should choose way and strategies of different opposition groups in Ethiopia or the opposition groups themselves?
12. Why should TPLF always prefer to play the game on its play court? Is it because that it is the sole player of the game and even because it is both the player and the judge?
13. What is the reason behind TPLFs appeal towards peaceful parties, especially kinijit to condemn armed groups, when ever news about their existence is heard? Is it not enough that it (TPLF) condemns them itself?
14. Is it not better for the leaders of peaceful party leaders (especially kinijit) to have some reservations in condemning armed movements, since they know why the armed movements in the first place exist? Is it not instead much better for the peaceful parties (specially kinijit) to play a mediator roll between the armed movements and TPLF and thereby making it clear that it (TPLF) will face unstoppable revolt from all sides unless and otherwise it engages itself for some kind of reconciliation process.
15. Peaceful parties (especially kinijit) claim that it is not fighting just for a regime change but rather for a paradigm change (or change of the whole system). If that is the case, how can a paradigm change be possible in a country that is totally governed not only by one party but also only by a few mafia leaders of one Party?
16. Can WAR bring peace?
17. Why do some want to support armed struggle or even engage themselves in war? Do proponents of armed struggle believe that WAR is the only option? Do proponents of armed struggle believe that the peaceful struggle has already been proved and can no more be a viable option? If so why?
18. Why do people want to engage in armed struggle regardless of their consciousness about the highly sacrifices that WAR is associated with?
19. How long can a peaceful struggle be waged?
20. What’s wrong to combine an armed struggle with a peaceful struggle as long as leaders of the two groups do not have a visible& verifiable cooperation among each other?
21. Is it possible for those who wage an armed struggle to subject themselves for a democratic process once they succeeded their aim of ousting the government that they fight against (in this case Ethiopian Armed movement/s against TPLF)?
22. Is it possible that some (not many, but some) of those who claim to be opponents of peace are just opponents of peace with the intension of softening a possible revolt of people against TPLF?
23. Do Ethiopians have a partner in the world for waging a WAR against TPLF?
24. Do Ethiopians have a partner in the region for waging WAR against TPLF? If yes, which one ?
25. Are there Ethiopian armed groups who are already engaged in fighting against TPLF?
26. What are the different armed groups which really do exist and are engaged in armed struggle against TPLF?
27. If there are armed groups which are already engaged in armed struggle, who are the leaders of these groups and their background and their current status?
28. If there are armed groups which are already engaged in armed struggle, what kind of cooperation does exist among these groups? Do the different groups have tactical alliance at least in order to oust TPLF first and solve their possible difference later, or do they have war against each other on and off even while they are already engaged in WAR?
29. Provided that there are real armed movements against TPLF regime? Are these movements totally within the territory of Ethiopia or have all (or some of them) base in neighbouring countries, especially in Eritrea? If we assume that these movements have their base in Eritrea, what’s wrong for an armed movement to have an alliance with a neighbouring countries (even including Eritrea), specially taking in to account that TPLF also had a similar alliance with Eritrean to achieve its goal and also taking in to account that other neighbouring are?
30. Even though it is public secret that some of the armed movements in Ethiopia are less unity friendly (not Pro Ethiopia Unity), but how possible could it be to coordinate the less unity friendly forces and the pro unity forces together with the intension of ousting TPLF from power and try to make a reconciliation process (and power sharing process) which could possibly turn the less unity friendly forces in to more unity friendly forces? Wouldn’t it be possible to plan such a strategies and end up TPLF divide and rule policy?
31. What’s the prons and cons of the armed movements to create a strategically alliance with Eritrea at least with the intension of ousting the brutal TPLF regime? If creating a strategically alliance with Eritrea is considered as a wrong option, then what is the better option that armed movements have to oust TPLF regime, since waging a war against TPLF from within Ethiopia could be more difficult ?
32. Is it possible for the armed movements to cooperate with Eritrea without exposing Ethiopia for a possible sabotage from Eritrean government? Can the different Ethiopian armed movements keep on their strategically alliance with Eritrea in order to oust TPLF and then resist any possible hidden agenda of Eritrea to disintegrate Ethiopia.
No body will give you freedom, you have to fight for it.
knowing your vote stolen, made the country land-locked people killed etc with such gov. you have to fight to remove it.
when you want to fight you have to recruit guys, who enjoy killing any one stands on their way, such kind of people are capable of winning the fight, and more likely to become successful. The worst thing is that they will continue to do the same after they take over power.
we need peaceful struggle only. What is the achievement of OLF AND ONLF with their armed struggle, advocating that they represent almost half of Ethiopian people and alligning with shabia for all these years?
i think peacefull means of strugle has ben exousted ethiopians should not play with the same card which weyane can,t understand
The south african ANC under apartheid used all means to bring about freedom to its people, we may not be under apartheid but we are under the worest dictatorship and all oppositions in ethiopia need to use all means available to them to be heard by melese and co.
The peaceful struggle has only once tried; whereas the violent way of usurping power is an endemic problem in Ethiopia. I only support the peaceful struggle.
dear GIRMA KASSA
are you fighting for weyane or ethiopian people? your deeds show you are fighting for weyane with your tooth and nail. it is your right to believe in peaceful strugle but try not to criticize others. weyane is the only one which is afraid of ARM STRUGGLE. with all respect for you.
The structure of ethiopian society has changed since the february revolution, although its path via capitalist path is arrested under Dergue and intially under Eprdf, it is basically a capitalist society. The capitalist at the head of the natinalities/nations are of the same race though speaking different tongue. With the greater expansion of capitalist economic relation, the economy will bring them into crisis, and a form of interstate commerce will evolve. EPRDF is a party held by the wit of principally one man, whose power base is fast erroding. His TPLF party is divided into three warring groups. The expelled group from Eritrea under esye and others, those who had raise arms in Erirea, and the Addis Adaba group. These are weak forces, and no bullent is required. The army, the security, the police can join the people as did Haile Selassies soldiers, security officers, and kebere Zebegn.
Inflation is driving the people against the addis Adba group and it is living not a life but a life of torture, trying to balance various forces.
The EPRDF is being pushed into split. The sharing of the looting of the people using various enconomic leverage is dividing them appart. It has become like the dergue and haileslassie era where the ruling groups were bickering.
The one thing required is to outline a set of reforms which would leverage these contradictions in the interest of the whole people.
People who do not know how to create wealth should not be allowed to come to power. So, it will be nice if these advocate of violence change their conciousness to creating wealth instead of trying to leave on taxes. They are no liberators but lices on the people.
What is needed is rapid investment, to breing the
Don’t be a bunch of sissies!

Now, it’s time to use the bullet.
opening opposition office in Asmara does not help our struggle. the Eritreans have got their own serious problems to solve, it seems a waste of time and energy to accomodate the idea.
we shall support Birtukan and her colleagues to keep going in challenging the system by means of peaceful struggle.
we are not yet through with her, let us give her time and the reinforcement that she needs, the material and moral support.
we shall be consistent to our determination to fight for democracy.
let us always start to finish.
thank you
