The executive committee of the Coalition for Unity and Democracy Party (Kinijit) had made a second attempt today (Saturday) to convene the party’s supreme council at its temporary office, but could not hold the meeting because a quorum (31 out of 60 members) was not reached as expected. Only about 25 members showed up today. With 11 members who are currently abroad giving their consent, the executive committee could have went ahead with the meeting, but Judge Bertukan Mideksa, the acting chairperson in the absence of Ato Hailu Shawel, and the other members of the executive committee insisted that the organization’s rules must be strictly followed. Kinijit spokesperson Dr Hailu Araya said the executive committee will convene the supreme council again tomorrow (Sunday) and establish a quorum with what ever number of members present. Quality is more important than quantity, so it does not matter how many people are there, two or three; you can still accomplish many great things. Forget the quorum! We know some people don’t respect time; therefore, they don’t come to the meeting on time, especially if they are not paid handsomely. Some people may have transportation problems. Others may be just scared to be there, supporting Kinijit, the formidable opponent of that illegal government of Woyanne. Learn something important from the Bible about a quorum: “For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18: 20)
The supreme council should convene its meeting with whatever number show up tommorrow. It is quite clear that several memebers of the council are abroad. Eleven of them have already signed and sent their blessing for the meeting and agreed to accept whatever decision the council reaches in their absence. Some others are already out, such as Lidetu and company, while Ayele Chamison and company have banded together with EPRDF. A few more who have sided with the stubborn and egoist Hailu will definitely miss. Therefore, if anyone who is in Ethiopia doesn’t show up, he/she should be considered absent and/or have resigned and the council should convene its meeting. It is sad some egoists have passed a sentence on the people of Ethiopia to live some more years under Meles’s tyranny. Let us leave these egos behind and move forward. After all, they are not good for even themselves!!!
Ato Tesfa #2 Why do you have to mention Chamisso at all?
He isn’t a La’elay mikir bet member. HE is only a parliament member.
Assta B. Gettu,
I think you are mixing two different things. The Bible and a political organization – Party. The two are different and have different source of authority. Not respecting the rule of law , it seems to me, is the major part of our problem. Kinijit ought to follow its rule and bylaw on the book. Howe else would it be different from Hailu Shovel’s unilateral action
It is fair and good to follow the rules and procedures of the party. But it would be undesirable and counter-productive to go beyond the limit. So, the next step should be met and a meaningful resolution has to be made in order to move forward.
I strongly argue that we must be willing and able to say to those individuals/groupings who are playing a very dirty political game that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
I believe strictly following the party’s bylaw and requiring the necessary quorum is very crucial. Quality work is needed; and there is no need to hurry. What is being done is to lay the foundation work of a big house; and that needs tolerance and down-to-earth work with, if needed, snail speed!
The socioeconomic problem of the country will not vanish due to the delays of some days or weeks.
it is a good call miss birtkan
I agree with the decision of the counsel to wait for the quarum requirement to be fulfilled. We shouldn’t put unnecessary pressure on the leadership to break the law. By doing so we are encouraging them to fall to the same trap as the chairperson did. Rather we should follow what they are doing with patience and be on their side for the implementation.
I would like them to strictly follow the bylaw. This process can not be completed overnight. It is a challenging process. It requires patience and determination. I hope and believe the counsel will take the appropraite measure at the appropraite time.
Those in the diaspora must not forget the situation they are in. They have challenges from within (which by now looks no more internal – rather a faction) and the ruling party. Therfore, we have to hold our breath and hope for the better!!
I think this is the right decision. But, I have the feeling that Melles will find an excuse to stop today’s meeting.
It is good to comply with the bylaws of the party. May fortune be with kinijit council and Ethiopian people. I saw the letter written for all members of the council which exhuasted all the available means. Whatever it takes it is good to be exhaustive to render the opponents speechless.
