The Secretary General of the Coalition for Unity and Democracy Party (Kinijit), Ato Muluneh Eyoel, said today that the party’s supreme council (የላዕላይ ም/ቤት) will hold an emergency meeting Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007. Ato Muluneh sent out a written notice to all members of the council, including those who are currently abroad, to attend the meeting. It is not clear if those abroad can join the meeting via teleconference. Ethiopian Review Radio Network will try to invite one of the executive committee members Sunday afternoon (after the meeting) to give a press briefing about the meeting. Some people have complained against the Kinijt executive in Ethiopia because they did not take decisive actions against Ato Hailu Shawel. Many expected Hailu would be “fired” by the executive committee. However that did not happen.
This by itself shows a different politics that was not seen in Ethiopia before. In our history we are used of spontaneous actions. Many times we go by emotions and very quick to judge.
What I am seeing from the Kinijit executive is the respect of law and regulation. I can see a measured and civilized actions that are based not on emotions and personal feelings but on setting up a good example and on living what was being preached.
The Kinijt manifesto listed about 16 basic principles among which one is the rule of law. No one should be allowed to be above the law. As Ato Hailu dictatorial action was illegal, had the executive fired Ato Hailu, it would have been illegal as well. (in spite the fact the action is popular).
The By-law of Kinijit has some clear disciplinary procedures. It is 2/3 of the council that can suspend any Kinijit officials. Therefore Ato Hailu is still the chairman of KINIJIT.
Currently since he is outside, it is as if he is not; so the vice chairperson can continue leading the party. However if Ato Hailu returns to Ethiopia any moment, it is up to him to call meetings. (I doubt, though, Ato Hailu would return back to Ethiopia anytime soon)
So let us not be too much critical against this process. It is good to be ruled by the law.
In this context I would like to express my admiration for the Kinijit executives for acting beyond their emotions and according to the principles they have been preaching us. This is what we need. Kinijit has shown again during a serious crisis what it really is.
For those who have been beating the drum to declare the “death” of Kinijit, I ask what they would say now when they see a calm, visionary, organized and well-rounded leadership ?

I urge the council to focus on how to legalize the organization, how to move forward the still hanging issues of rule of law, freedom and democracy in Ethiopia and how to put the Ethiopian people at the forefront (in the drivers seat ) of the fight. Nothing else should concern them for now as clarity, and hopefully unity , on these core issues will define the rest of the steps. The meeting will fail before it starts , if the agenda focuses on discussing individuals. You will never come out of the crisis that way. This is my humble advice to you. Wish you all the best .
I personally think they should focus on getting kinijit back together, including the Poor chairman.
Girma Kassa has put it on a nut shell. We are going to see a fair, democratic and justified procedure to examine the action taken by Hailu Showel and Co. There is no rush to judgement. This should not be taken as being spineless and wiggling like a spaghetti. The process should take its own course until it is clear beyond doubt to everyone when the decision is made. This is good politics and it is winsome.
It will help all the Kinijit supporters in Ethiopia and the disapora to be on the same page before the struggle starts again with new force.
In the Ethiopian ecclesiastical order, it is anathema to replace an aging or ailing patriarch before he dies. Is it also unlawful for Kinijit to replace Ato Hailu Shawel before he comes to Ethiopia or voluntarily leaves Kinijit? Let us wait and see what the Supreme Council will do when it meets on Sunday, December 23, 2007 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It is always good to wait patiently as the Teacher once said: “The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.” (Ecclesiastes 7:8)
Tatti:
Well said! Let us focus on the legal registration of the party before anything else.
The people of Ethiopia want direction on what to follow. Kinijit leaders should condemn Hailu Shawel and assure the people that they are leading the party. Hailu Shawel can not lead a fight against woyanes from his nursing home in Minnesota. He should rather watch the clock before he misses changing his diaper. A derg remainant dictatorial bloody old fool sabotaged our struggle. We can’t sit and watch him destabilize our party any more. Enough is enough.
I hope the popular leaders will take bold measure, get rid of Hailu Shawel and his groups. IF not it will be impossible to focuse on the main struggle fighting woynae.
Ato Hailu should never been Char man in the first place but the power monger old man would do anything and everything to stay in power. we should all stand behind the popular leaders who work day an night for Ethiopian people.
Hailu shawul is not above kinijits’ executives counciles as his corrupted gang group think. HAILU is being elected by kinijits’ executives’ council not directly by the ppl.Now this shameless dergist has already damaged so many things and they should not give more time to his destructive move. They must tell him opennly, Hailu , you have crossed the line which we have drawn and now you must stop trash propoganda, they must tell him he is in USA for his personal business [medical treatement] , he must either follow his medical treatement or come back to ethiopia and continue his fuction or they must fire him from kinijit for once and for all. Let him Go with his old friends like commander assefa, emmru zeleka, getachew haile, getachew garedew, all these were haileselasie servants who will be face for justice for their crime against ethiopia’s farmers, others like shaleqa admass, shaleqa getachew mengist, shaleqa yosef yzazew, EWP [ETHIOPIA’S WORKING PARTY] MEMBER CADRE MERCHAEW SINESHAWU and other shaleqa are well known by dergis era, some other non sense banda like taye mesfin mekonnen, assefa derse, mammo yihune and getachew wana, all these are resposnsible for either parties’s or civil organizations funds, they are dishonest hodams who have been emebezeling millins of birrs which is collected from poor ethiopians from disapora to support the struggle in different times in different ways. So Hailu is no more usefull for kinijit and even for ethiopia’s pplstruggle because he is under the direct command of weyane’s cadres all over the world.
The council should work hard on bringing the organization back to normal. it is no help to include and exclude. i do not think a tit for tat helps. All the members of the different splits should come back and work together.
Success
Clear direction the Ethiopian people want we will give them; supper leadership they want we will provide them; political and religious freedom they want we will present them; wealth and prosperity they want we will bring them; Justice and the rule of law they want we will legalize them; corruption and nepotism they want to avoid we will destroy them; black mail and intimidation they want to get rid of we will eliminate them; diseases and infant mortality they want to minimize we will eradicate them; medical insurance for all they want we will nationalize them; good transportation systems they want to see everywhere in the country we will build and expand them; clean water to drink, plenty of food to eat, good schools and highly qualified teachers for all kids we will recommend them; retirement age at age sixty five or above we will give them the choice to make: We are all for them and they for us!
