Vote for Ethiopa’s next president

If the upcoming elections in Ethiopia were legitimate, and there is a presidential system (instead of the current fake parliamentary system where the prime minister is a dictator), who would you vote to be next president and vice-president of Ethiopia.

Please post your suggestions below with detailed explanations. The top 10 names that are nominated by readers will be voted on after one week of collecting your suggestions.

This is not expected to be a scientific poll, but it will be a valuable information as to which current political leaders are viewed most favorably by the people of Ethiopia.

  1. Your survey, “Aite” Ellias Kifle, however crude it may be, has come up with some interesting wishes and even directions of collective thoughts. The entries are a mixture of jokes, satires, hatred, and honest indications of the would be leaders if situations permited in present day Ethiopia. The ratings for Birhanu Nega and Birtukan Mideksa are predominant. This should give a clear clue that they are the choice in the hearts and minds of most of the Ethiopian people. Some of the respondents are either out of touch about the political situation in Ethiopia or are victims of ignorance, paranoae, bribery or sheer slave of their emotion. Take for instance # 75 respondent; He takes the name of a great leader, Menelik II, but uses it to nominate Hailu Shawl and his gang members. Hasn’t he heard what nick-name Addis Abebans gave him? “Hailu Shewood”. He and Lidetu Kidetu, make a beautiful equation of betrayal and sumbol of power greed.
    Thank you Ellias Kiffle

  2. To put an end to the hatred in Ethiopia, We need a unified and solid government.
It is simple to do that, here is how:

    Prime minister = Bereket Simon

End of the story. No body will shout after that otherwise he will kick our a**

  3. I was told she had been jailed, and she is now in the same jail for the cause of Democracy for her people, and finally this strong lady, mother of one child, will prevail and come out of her unjustified imprisonment. I’m sure Birtukan Mideksa believes in one united Ethiopia and would not accept any request from any province of Ethiopia to secede. Indeed, she would be a good leader by making every Ethiopian feel at home. Her leadership would avoid favoritism based on ethnicity; it would regard all Ethiopians as the same people from different regions. Birtukan would immediately dismantle the Kilil system such as the Amhara Kilil or the Oromo Kilil that has been separating one tribe from the other tribe. She will bring back those Ethiopian fertile lands sold to the Arab Muslims at the lowest price. She will support that the Amharic language should remain as the national language of the country. She would firmly work hard to establish a lasting peace between Ethiopia and Eritrea. And whenever there is a natural disaster such as famine in Ethiopia, she would quickly be the first person to tell the world that there is a famine in some parts of the country and correct the problems as soon as possible. Therefore, I will vote for this dedicated lady, Birtukan Mideksa, to be the first woman president of the Ethiopian people.

  5. Elias: The idea of voting for Ethiopia’s next president is good; however, you need to change the format where readers are allowed to choose from a given list of likely candidates. Mengistu Hailemariam and Esayas Afeworki are not, and will not be candidates.

Professor Alemayehu G. Mariam has my vote for president of Ethiopia.

  6. I vote for Dr Berhanu Nega. He has demonstrated his leadership strength first through his involvement with Kinijit prior to and after election 2005. His role in the success of the campaign strategy and his influence in the key decisions after the election (for eg. whether or not to join parliament) have showed clearly his ability for effective leadership. Second, after the formation of Ginbot7, he has proven himself to be a leader who has a broad vision for the future of Ethiopia: a vision that’s inclusive of all Ethiopians (he often times reminds us the inhumane conditions and treatments in the Ogaden area and the human right crimes being committeed against oromos, etc, not just the conditions in mainstream Ethiopia). He deeply understands the need for dialog between different political groups and has proven his knowledge of democracy and human freedom. Those who have worked with him have also seen how highly democratic he is.

  7. The idea of choosing a president is good in principle. But, Ethiopia is still under the firm and total control of a minority of a minority Tribal Junta, who wants to stay in power by any means necessary.

Thus all our efforts should be focused like a laser beam in surgically removing the Tribal Junta ethnic malignant cancer from the Ethiopian body politic.

This will be the present to the Ethiopian and the Horn of Africa peoples.

  8. The west very much afraid of what PIA is teaching Africa. Look why the west wants to silence the truth that comes from PIA and demonize him.
Watch the youth from East Africa converse with PIA, and want him as the president of the Horn of Africa, and some even of Africa. You can start watching from the 18:00th minute of Part I and continue to Part II, if you don’t have the patience to watch the entire video:

    http://www.eastafro.com/Post/2008/07/25/video-pia-meets-with-youth-from-horn-of-africa

PIA has been preaching, now for the last 40 years, on independence from any type of subjugation, that aid is debilitating and addictive, that Africans are more than capable of solving all of their problems with little to no help from the outside, certainly not from the west. It is unfortunate that they have spineless leaders who gladly enslave themselves to the west. The west doesn’t want PIA mobilize people at the grass roots level this way – be the owners of destiny, resist aid, that they can achieve anything without any outside help, etc. Many of his ideas are being echoed from others, but he is to humble to take any credit. As much as the west wants to silence his voice and demonize him, it is fortunate that, slowly Africans from all corners are realizing why the west has so much fuss with Eritrea and are making Eritrea their destination. They can then see and experience the reality on the ground first hand, independent on western media.
