ER “2009 Person of the Year” to be announced

The much anticipated Ethiopian Review’s annual “Person of the Year” will be announced shortly. Clear choices are emerging. The short list will be posted tomorrow.

Ethiopian Review is still accepting nominations for the “2009 Person of the Year.” Please post your nominations and suggestions in the comment box below.

The person who will be chosen as “Person of the Year” is believed to have contributed the most to the betterment of Ethiopia during the past 12 months.

Last year’s choice [click here to read] was President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea. Ethiopian Review — by far the most popular and widely read Ethiopian journal according to Alexa.com — found that President Isaias has done more than any one to advance the interest of Ethiopia in 2008 by providing assistance to Ethiopian freedom fighters, as well as opening the door for any Ethiopian who is trying to escape the brutal repression in Ethiopia while Kenya, Yemen, Djibouti and others closed theirs.

The final decision will be made on December 31 by Ethiopian Review publisher in consultation with the journal’s Board of Trustees, Advisers, and readers.

  8. I am gonna get pissed off if Elias is not nominated for and win man of The Year!!! Screw these so-called politicians. They change their stands with their surroundings just like chameleons. But Elias has shown us his steadfast beliefs and stands over the years. I have a child on its way soon and I will name it Elias if he is a boy. God Bless Him and His Family. Happy Holidays Brother!!!!

  9. Dr. Negasso Gidadda
For his courage, despite many oromos struggling for oromia alone, showing inclination and preference to unity and apologized publicly for what he has done with tplf!

  10. IMHO, Elias Kifle deserves to be The Man of A Year. Then reasons are many but one that is very significant can be summarized as such.
Over the last half a century, there had been many talks about Eritrea and Ethiopa. Not a debate or a gialogue but a sensationalized and often one sided talk that left no open room for intellectual discussion. People were indocterined to believe that their side is good and working for their best interest while the other side is evil and on the verge of destroying the country. What such a mentality enused was a senseless blood shed, anger, mistrust on both sides and for a long time. Then came Elias Kifle, a wise journalist with a clear vision who has been instrumental in openning up a healthy dialogue between Eritreans and Ethiopians, one of the remedies that was long missing and one that would have a greater impact on healing the wounds and bring us more closer.
Thus, I name Elias Kifle as A Man of a Year. May many more follow his suit for the betterment of Ethiopia and Eritrea.

  11. የአመቱ ምርጥ ስው ሳይንቲሰት ዶክተር ገቢሳ እጀታ በኢትዮጵያነት እንጂ በኦሮሞነት የሚያምኑ ብርቅ የኢትዮጵያ ልጅ

  12. the worest are all the above individuals which nominated Esayas,Birtukan,Berhanu,Asaminew, Elias and other devills as the best man of the year.

the best man of the year is
    1.kenenisa Bekele
    2.Gebisa Ejeta
3.The owner and manager of sun shin con.
    (Samual)

  13. i think Elias Kifle has done more for Ethiopia in the past year than the so called opposition leaders in Ethiopia, so i think Ethiopians should get him some credit.

But I’m just suggesting this as a good neighbor, the choice should be made by Ethiopians.

  14. I vote for HE Isaias Afeworki, President of the state of Eritrea. He has been contributing a lot effort to bring Ethiopia back on good path. What Ethiopia needs is a man like him. Look what he have done to Eritrea.

  15. Dear Elias,

    You don’t need consulation

The person/heroine of the year is Birtukan Mideksa

Just think of the courage she has challenging a tyranny in the way she can!!

  16. I think Elias Kifle and Seleshi have fought the Weyane regime with their pen more than any solider can in the battle filed with their gun. I have lots of respect for these 2 gentle man who are not afraid of political correctness and presented the true color of Weyane to the public. I sure think they should be men of the year.

  17. Elias , Seleshi and Tedi Afro are among the men of the year for their unwavering stance and for reaching Ethiopians around the world. These folks have a pen sharper and more powerful than a solider equipped with ammunition fighting the Weyane.

  18. Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea should be person of the year, for the following reasons:-
1- for challenging the flawed US policy in the Horn of Africa
2- for challenging and defeating the dream of TPLF to disintegrate Ethiopia and create Abay Tigray
3- for continuing to expose the crimes of the TPLF junta
5- for extending political and logistical support to Ethiopian fighters and politicians alike.

  19. 1. Dr. Ejeta Gabisa:
for he is the scientist of the people, of millions of peasants.

    2. The People of Qoqa Lake:
for they spoke and exposed the disaster caused by unfettered capitalism.

    3. The Martyrs and Veterans of the Ethiopian Student Movement:
for it is December, as we remember their sacrifices forever, the time calls for their type of spirit, courage, and endeavor.

  20. Dr. Birhanu Nega
The TPLF led govt. has closed any choice to see alternative governance for almost two decades. The person who made great effort at home genuinly is this Dr. Plus after learning that TPLF is removed by arms struggle, he has given to all Ethiopians one big UMBRELLA! It is upto all Ethiopians to help this respected Dr.
