ER “2009 Person of the Year” to be announced

The much anticipated Ethiopian Review’s annual “Person of the Year” will be announced shortly. Clear choices are emerging. The short list will be posted tomorrow.

Ethiopian Review is still accepting nominations for the “2009 Person of the Year.” Please post your nominations and suggestions in the comment box below.

The person who will be chosen as “Person of the Year” is believed to have contributed the most to the betterment of Ethiopia during the past 12 months.

Last year’s choice [click here to read] was President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea. Ethiopian Review — by far the most popular and widely read Ethiopian journal according to Alexa.com — found that President Isaias has done more than any one to advance the interest of Ethiopia in 2008 by providing assistance to Ethiopian freedom fighters, as well as opening the door for any Ethiopian who is trying to escape the brutal repression in Ethiopia while Kenya, Yemen, Djibouti and others closed theirs.

The final decision will be made on December 31 by Ethiopian Review publisher in consultation with the journal’s Board of Trustees, Advisers, and readers.

  1. Best of person of the year General Asaminew Tsigae and his friends in the torture room . These Heroes are symbols of Ethiopian people. They represent Ethiopia under torture. They represent the situation in which Ethiopia is found.

  6. President Isaias Afwerki, becouse of his steadfastness, despide all odd, his independence of doing business and his genuine intention to bring a real economical and political independent not only to Eritrea and Ethiopia but also to the horn!

  9. I hope you won’t be shy to be named man of the year of ER while you own ER. But Elias Kifle deserves for his unwavering stand on all major issues. Exposing the pseudo intellectuals who stand against the legitimate Holy synod but they stand with aba gebremedhin like drs. aklilu and getachew , the untrust worthy and corrupt shaleka gang including egocentric hailu showel etc. And your stand on the way to push forward the struggle against woyane one way is through the help of Eritrea. Your consistency on that precede most the so called opposition leaders. I can add more. But definately Elias Kifle learned political science he is much wiser than some of the so called they claimed them selves political scientist like dr. taye.

  12. EPPF as an organisation or others in an armed struggle against the minority Junta!!!
    The only reason why some people are nominating BIRTUKAN is coz she’s been detained in retrospective that the older git SHAWEL stupidly chose to serve the blood soaked master than the Ethiopian people.
    I would never trust any of the opposition leaders – trust me as soon as she is released she will be like the damn SHAWEL.
    Why not nominate those who are sacrifcing themselves for the people of Ethiopia such as the EPPF & why not the MARTYRS of 2005.
    I’ve never seen Ethiopians dis-unified ever than it’s now.
    Please let’s be conscientious, it’s an insult & we should be ashamed to nominate Meles & Shawel & the like…

  21. it’s been only 5 month since i come here in US and before i came here i used to debate with my weyane frainds, some times things went nasty becouse most of them are narrow minded, when i puss them hard they told me to becarfull…when i get my to come here i decided one thing, i wait one of banda in the night and break his hade hard…i have a very good physical condition and a black belt marshal art…i don’t want to go old carrying boxes here, i want to do some thing for my country, i can’t help in money…but i have the welingness to give my life for my country, in my world there is no entnicity, religion and color…i stand for one ethiopia and i can take out 3-4 guys hand to hand..but i don’t have exprinace in gun…were can i go to get my wish…please some body help me out with this…i can help.so that one day wheather i’m alive or die i may get the chance to be person of the year!

For 2009 it should be Elias and Sileshi, these two heroes managed to open the doors of cooperation and friendship between Ethiopia and Eritrea and are still tirelessly working to unite the genuine Ethiopian opposition for a better tomorrow for the people of Ethiopia and the whole Horn of Africa.

  35. Africa is a playground of petty dictators and thugs with hearts made of stone, looking for their own self interest and care less about the downtrodden masses.

    The Eritrean President seem to have, a heart made of gold and a visionary mind, to lead his nation but the whole Horn and East Africa. This great statesman is my choice for ER person of the year.

    Once in a long line of leaders comes a leader which inspires the entire nation and lead the nation to greatness. Isaias is of those leaders.

    If there is one it could only be “teddy Afro” coz he insisted preaching love and unity despite what has been done to him by the evils.

  45. The Children for Peace (ONLUS), a non-profit association, nominates Haregewoin Teferra. Without her own government’s help, she fought tirelessly for HIV/AIDS orphans in Ethiopia. She has been neglected and rightful recognition in her own country has been missing for too long. She has earned the recognition and it is unfortunate this nomination has to be made after she has passed away. She was a lone warrior and truly fought the war against HIV/AIDS, particularly for the children of Ethiopia.

    Join the rest of the international community and recognize her for what she accomplished.
