Ethiopian Review is still accepting nominations for the “2009 Person of the Year.” Please post your nominations and suggestions in the comment box below.

The person who will be chosen as “Person of the Year” is believed to have contributed the most to the betterment of Ethiopia during the past 12 months.

Last year’s choice [click here to read] was President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea. Ethiopian Review — by far the most popular and widely read Ethiopian journal according to Alexa.com — found that President Isaias has done more than any one to advance the interest of Ethiopia in 2008 by providing assistance to Ethiopian freedom fighters, as well as opening the door for any Ethiopian who is trying to escape the brutal repression in Ethiopia while Kenya, Yemen, Djibouti and others closed theirs.

The final decision will be made on December 31 by Ethiopian Review publisher in consultation with the journal’s Board of Trustees, Advisers, and readers.

  1. Leaders of Mederek should be persons of the year.

    Message to Eng. Hailu:
    Eng. Hailu, you told Ethiopians not to drink coffee with woyanes. Many, including Shibre Deselagen, listened, followed your orders, and were gun-downed by Agazi forces. Now, you have betrayed those and surrendered yourself by signing a meaningless so-called code of conduct with the head of Agazi forces. Sir, if you are no shame, I don’t know what shame is.

  2. Again, this year the Eritrean president should be the ER person of the year.

    His unwavering stand for a united, strong, democratic Ethiopia speaks volumes about his political intellect, wisdom and experience.

    Asmara is becoming the meeting place of all the Ethiopian progressive forces fighting to bring peace, democracy and prosperity in Ethiopia.

    The one man that can make the Tribal Junta wet in their pants is the Eritrean President. He made them and he can destroy them, when time is right.

    The only proplem is that, there not an organized opposition to take over. The ball is in opposition court.

  3. The 2009 person of the year should be Elias Kifle who has surpassed other Ethiopian journalists by traveling to Asmara and interviewing the President of that country, Isaiah Afeworki, and sharing with us, his audiences, the views of the President of Eretria about the futures of the two countries – Ethiopia and Eretria. Elias Kifle has traveled two times to Asmara and met with the Ethiopian Freedom Fighters. By meeting them in the jungles of Ethiopia, Elias Kifle has brought us the first hand news from these legendary freedom fighters and assured us they could do the job to remove the tyrant leader, Meles Seitanawi (Zenawi) from his eighteen-years-old post and replace him by a highly educated, dedicated, and unbiased person, a person well liked by all the Ethiopian people; therefore, I nominate Elias Kifle to be a man of the year, and I hope all of you would follow my honest suggestion.

  4. I Say General Asaminew Tsige, . IN 2009 according to the Voice of America (VOA), General Asaminew Tsige told the Kangaroo court judge that he had been a victim of ethnic abuse, as well as beatings and torture by Meles Zenawi’s prison guards. He is now blind in his left eye as a result of the torture.

  5. Obang Metho

    For me Obang Metho is man of the year.After all those tragedies and attrocities happened to his community and relatives by the brutal regime, he devoted his time, energy and resource to creat awarness about human right violation, torture and Genocide in different part of Ethiopia to world leaders and internation institution.He also inspired ethiopians to come together and fight the brutal regime and build future Ethiopia free of tourture, intemedation, mass killing, equall to its all citizens regardless of her/his religion, Gender, Ethinicity under the moto of humanty before ethinicity.As to my openion he deserve to be man of the year. Obang we love you keep on your good works

  6. The man of the year should be none other than Eyasu Alemayehu who you hate but who has contributed much again this year in all fields. The worst person is Hailu Shawel. Special hero mention should go to Bertukan

  7. Elias kifle must be the person of the year for his effort to travel to Asmara and trying to find a way to solve the problem from its roots. I still believe woyane can not and won’t be removed with out help of shabia or before shabia has to destroyed it first, from both options Elias has chosen the former which is more realistic option at the moment. For his courageous move Elias is my number one nominee. By the way I have never taken Elias seriously until he went to the fighting field and had pictures with those young boys in uniform.

  8. Do not blame Hailu Sahwel (scarf). He was hit in the head by foreign ambassadors which damaged his brain. I quote “…andande senascheger chenqelatachenen lekorekomun ye-wedaj hager ambasadercoh misgana yegebachewal..” that is what he said. I guess the “kurkum” was hard.

  9. One of these people
    – esayas afowerk
    -leader of ONLF( I don’t know his name) He is showed to everybody that we have to fight to get freedom.
    -general Asaminew Tsege( lost his eye by Meles)

  10. My choice is Birtukan Midheksa for her unwavering stand for the truth and justice. She is a person of integrity, brave and committed political figure. When some run away for fear and some submit themselves to dictators she chose to stand for the truth accepting the consequences. She is in prison and paying the price to bring change for her people. I think she is an example and symbol of the struggle in our country.

  11. I firmly believe that this years award should go to those tried so hard to make a formidable task to unseat the woyane tribal junta. I’m not talking about the many paper tigers that Ethiopia is abundant of but about those who are actually laying the pathway towards victory by informing , agitating and organizing the public to take tangilble steps. Ethiopia and Ethiopoians wether in the diaaspora or at home should recoginize these two individuals. My two nominees for the 2009 person of the year are none other than ELIAS KIFLE AND SHILESHI TILAHUN.

    I solemly salute these two remarkable individuals.

    cheers
    goradew

  12. President isaias Afwerki and Elias Kifle

    I nominated President Isaias for his stewardship of our opposition forces, his unwavering stand of our countries unity, the vision he has for the entire Horn region and his patience in spite of the Weyanes provocative actions.

    I nominated Elias Kifle for his courage to go to Eritrea and do what he had to see to it that the two peoples would open up some rapprochement, which is a win-win situation rather than dwell on some meaningless hatred and holding grudge against people who are literary cousins!

  13. Shame on you who is calling Birtukan Midekisa as a hero. Don’t take my word , just call and find out the truth. I don’t know when you people wake up your mind. Don’t count your age in USA, try to be smart.

  14. These are my choices at no particular order:

    * Mr. Isaias Afwerki for not wavering his support to all Ethiopian oppositions and withstanding all accusations labelled against him for helping us.

    * Mr. Mohamed Osman, chairman of ONLF for leading the first Ethiopian armed struggle against the TPLF dominated regime. And showed that the only way to remove TPLF was through armed struggle and not entertain teethless long articles or holding peaceful meetings and demonstrations.

    * Mr. Elias Kifle for freeing us from the taboo of not having anything to do with Eritrea, the risk of being labelled traitor and un-Ethiopianness!
    For the interest of Ethiopia, he actually travelled twice to Eritrea and interviewed Mr. Isaias Afwerki which many of us have listened to.

  15. I nominate Birtukan Mideksa. Selecting her as “2009 Person of the Year” could also help us to intensify the drive for her release from TPLF’s jail.

  16. EWNETU
    Pime Minister Meles Zenawi is the person of the year 2009 for taking a tangible forward steps to slow down the political tension in the country and also for his outstanding performance in representing Africa in various matters and enable Ethiopia to shine infront of the world.

  17. I do believe Birtukan M. should be the person of the year.She stands up against the butcher weyane Meles. The rest of Ethiopian leaders are scared from him and want to work with him even though they know deep down inside he is going to be re elected for another term.

  18. Mr Elias, why you cut my message on #31? If you don’t like my message don’t put it the whole. I have enough evidence what I am saying. She is visiting her daughter at night time , the people in Ferencay Legasion saw her . And she is relaxing in lakes in south Shewa region with Woyannes, this time. She is not in jail. She will be the next fake president , in place of 100 aleka.

  19. If appropriate Elias Kifle deserves the ER’s year of the man for his proven farsightedness and consistency. He is always the first to expose the foxes when they were covered in ‘yebeg lemd’. His visit to Eritria also means a lot.

    I nominate Elias not only for the ER man of the year, but for a leader of a brand new opposition party. I believe Elias has the potential to do more than ER publisher. Elias has to rise if G7 fails to show us some thing tangeble before the May Election.

  20. Elias kifle= worst person of the year
    isayas= dictator of the year
    Meles= Man of the year
    Hailu= Genuine of the year
    Lidetu= next leader of ethiopia
    birtukan= DEDEB set (stupid woman) of the year

  21. 1. BIRTUKAN MEKIDSA FOR HER SACRIFIES AND DEDICATION TO BUILD DEMOCRATIC ETHIOPIA.
    2. OBANG METHO FOR HIS NONE STOP STRUGGLE TO PUT ETHIOPIA FIRST. HIS DEDICATION TO BRING AWARNESS THE SITUATION IN ETHIOPIA SHOULD BE RECOMENDED.
