The former Ethiopian Prime Minister, Tamrat Layne, denied involvement in mass killings more than 15 years ago in Dire Dawa, Bedenno, Arbagugu, Aris and other communities, during an exclusive interview with VOA Amharic’s Addisu Abebe. Major excerpts from the interview were aired on March 25 and 26, 2009.
Tamrat,served a 12-year sentence in Ethiopian prisons on charges of corruption. He has been in the United States for two months and attended a Pentecostal church in the Washington, D.C. area where he confessed his sins to God, he said. Tamrat joined the communist party at the age of 18, and is now a born-again Christian. He has also denies taking any money from the government.

Great job Addisu Abebe. But Tamrat was lying when he rejected the accustation that he injected civil war in Harar. I have personally heared him with my own ears when he went to eastern Ethiopia and said “Asayuwachew, ye gimel chira teketay yemiluachihun hulu”
Rather than being candid to the people of Ethiopia about all the sufferings he inflicted and apologizing to them, he took God as a sanctuary and a back door skip route from his real sins.
There is no doubt that he should repent his sins to the Almighty, but it is a blatant hypocrisy to not admit and apologize to the people he directly perpetrated tremendous pain and suffering and claim that he has repented all his sin to God and he doesn’t need to ask the people of Ethiopia for forgiveness. How would it be possible to repent to God without candidly apologizing to the real people who he has caused all the sufferings and killings due to his vitriolic and twisted ideologies. He should first go ask those people that he has caused anguish and agony then go to the Almighty for mercy. If truth be told, he should apologize to all Ethiopians sincerely without any equivocation for all what he did and for all the carnage and sufferings he has caused. I couldn’t believe that he totally denied what he did say in Somali region and he calls the name of God over and over again. Hypocrite!
Addisu has demonstrated his outstanding quality as a journalist. The response from Ato Tamirat shows that he is still arrogant. He is avoiding the real issue of his crimes. He has never mentioned what he has done and avoided the past. The only time he referred to the past was to complain about journalists. There are many victims that he is responsible for and he should take responsibility. Personally I don’t believe that he really sorry and should be held accountable. What surprises me is how people go and listen to him. That is at the core of our problem. MOst of us shrug shoulders with criminals as long as we are not directly affected. That is not the right way to behave. We should stand against bad behavior together and ask the right questions. Once again my appreciation to Addisu.

Ato Tamerat didn’t learn at all. He is trying to lie to us again.I think its a lot easier to say forgive me to GOD than saying to People face to face. Jesus is not going be a witness or give approval for the forgiveness Ato Tamerat asked for the Muslim Ethiopians that suffered under him. Could it be because admitting his fault could lead to his own trial of Genocide or corruption? I would say,he doesn’t,rather he felt guilty and ashamed that is why he doesn’t want talking about the past.What strikes me is that the notion that he wants to unify the Ethiopian people through God.Who knows,this might work for the first time in history.Ato Tamrat has an adequate knowledge of politics,especially how to come in to power,he also knows woyanes in and out and so the right weapon for woyanes might be God.

Why is this guy still talking? He should be an outcaste. He is not remorseful for all the injustice he has caused. He won’t even say sorry. This guy is trying to use religion to be absolved of his atrocity that he committed while he was in power. He should not be given any chance to deceive the Ethiopian people. He is the most un-mature and confused person on earth. After he confessed all his sins infront of the parliament like a child, he is now saying that he didn`t steal money. Again, after he was complaining at the court that he was beaten and slapped by security officials while he was in prison, he however said the prison guards were treating me like their brother while he came out from the prison.
Tamirat ofcourse knows most of the massacres occured in many parts of ethiopia while he was in power. Especially, all people in Harar still remember what he said in Jijiga.

Unfortunately, the pentecostal church has been often abused by such criminals for a long time and it is apublic knowledge that most of the Dergue officials are also been sheltered in this church.
It is very difficult for me to judge whether he involved in corruption or not but it is definite that he was an indirect (if not direct) initiator of genocide in Arba Gugu…

Tamirat is a very weak person, 12 years ago he admitted in puplic he was guilty now he is telling us he did nothing wrong, but most of us expecting two things from x-PM Tamirat in addition to telling us about Jesus:

I appreciate your interview Addisu. Good job. But what stuned me is that Tamrat has not read the Bible correctly. Jesus has told in the Bible that one has to go and appologize to his brother before he comes for worship to God. The right repentance starts from “Brother”, not from God. He has to read the Bible again.
As one of the commentators said above, he has to do two things;
1. He has to clearly repent for the killings and corruption he had been involved in. You cannot run away from the truth. Confess it. Admit your mistakes and wrong doings. Cleanliness is next to Godliness.
He has to pay the money back to the Ethiopian people who are starving
God is not where one can escape after doing what he wants
So long as he denies the truth and refuses appology, I cannot repect him as a Christian brother.

How can religion be a hide out for criminals? Let us leave his repent to God as spritual issue. We are talking about worldly justice. Why do we allow such criminals to hide behind the curtain of religion? Let us collect evidences and challenge this nasty person for the crimes and sufferings he caused. I listened to his interview more than once. Actually 3 times. I want to make sure I did not miss any important fact. And at the end it bothered me a lot. This guy is not admitting to any particular incidences or deeds. The two accusations above by Kasim and Selamta include hard facts. They are very, very serious crimes. I commend the interviewer but I wish he had also asked him about the killing of demonstrators in the streets of Addis in early 1990’s because they were out there protesting peacefully. I am sure I have read about such incidence on Ethiopian Review and other websites. I am also sure he was the Prime Minister then. Those soldiers did not go out just to kill people on their own decision. Did he quit after the killings? No!!! He kept his role until he got caught with his hands in the coffers (See he did not ask for permission to do that and he forgot he was always an outsider to an ethno-centric group). He might have said something slightly to the contrary of what Meles might be saying during a meeting or two. May be he taught he was Butch Cassidy and Meles was his buddy The Sundance Kid. He did not know the Diablo from Adwa was none of that. He should be asked about the killing in Addis in early 90’s and should also answer to the evidence as it was told by two gentlemen above – Kasim and Selamta. Then he may be forgiven by the families of the victims. It involves the blood of utterly innocent people. The blood is crying out for justice into the heavens. In the meantime he can continue honing his skills of speaking in tongue and the holy dance!!!!

This guy is full crap, I have no problem what he does in his life and what kind of relationship he established with his lord. We all should have some kind of relationship with our creature. My problem with this guy is:
1. He should know that first he went prison for the corruption or the theft he did (which I don’t believe that personally) not for what he did to the Ethiopian people and the Ethiopian national interest. d. The killing of AAU simply beasue their out to demonstration against the separation of Eritrea and the illegal deal between the party he lead and the EPLF
And if he said there are things that he did wrong we want to know which one….
