Security Alert – Dire Dawa, Harar, Jijiga and the Somali Region
The American Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, reminds American citizens to avoid travel to the cities of Dire Dawa, Harar, and Jijiga, including the areas surrounding these cities, and to the Somali Region of Ethiopia. American citizens who do travel to or reside in these areas are advised to avoid public gatherings and public places, including hotels, and should avoid using public transportation and transportation hubs. The Embassy reminds Americans that there is still a heightened state of alert for these areas, as was noted in the warden message and security alert of June 6, 2008. U.S. Embassy employees are prohibited from traveling to these areas except for essential travel, which is reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis only.
American citizens are reminded to review their personal safety and security posture and to remain vigilant especially at public events and venues. Beware of unattended baggage or packages left in any location, including in minibuses and taxis. American citizens are strongly urged to review all the Department of State’s cautions about travel in Ethiopia, contained in the Country Specific Information for Ethiopia on the Department’s website. The Embassy’s recent warden messages are available here.
For the latest security information, American citizens living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs internet website, where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Alerts, and Travel Warnings can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. and Canada, or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll-line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8 AM to 8 PM Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. Federal Holidays.)
The U.S. Embassy is located at Entoto Avenue, P.O. Box 1014, in Addis Ababa

Yea, let the Ethiopian people burn alive by their slave, the Weyanes, while America protects “American” – no doubt meant for those that have red and blue bloodied citizens. What a hipocracy! It doesn’t get any better than that!
I think Woyane thugs are desperate and craving for attention or military and financial support from American Gov’t. Majority of the Aderi and Oromo muslim people in the Harar city are not hard-core supporters of OLF and the same goes for most Somalis in Deridewa and Jijiga cities as far as ONLF support concerned. Mark words, if the TPLF is upto other sinister political manipulation and tries to alient local masses, it will have serious crises in its hands, if not final disintegration of the Ethiopian nation as we all now it.
Americans have been deeply involved in Woyanne’s operations inside Somalia and the Ogaden, they know what is going on, now American intelligence, military and political operators in Ethiopia don’t have as much green light to do what they want as they did during the “good old Bush times”. They also know that the balance of power has shifted to the detriment of Woyanne.
When Americans are warning their operatives and for the most part their political tool, the “civilian neo-colonial tools”, it means they have no confidence in Woyanne’s military forces to keep them safe.
You reap what you sow, for the last decade the Americans have been using Woyanne to brutalize the Somali people and the people of Ogaden with no mercy, not expecting them to fight back, unfortunately these short sighted policies of the US have terrible long term ramifications for Ethiopia, a deep mistrust and hatred has set in between the people of Ogaden and Oromia and the Woyanne regime, I guarntee you the main Woyanne backers have now put themselves deep inside this conflict and I hope they pay dearly for it.
It is very interesting how Ethiopian government want to avoid Americas from public places or from specific region where Meles the Ethiopian president kept killing thousands of people. In my opinion it isn’t a concern for Americans, rather avoid Americans and anybody else who might see and hear inhuman activities from the rest of the world.
