VOA Crossfire: Temesgen Zewdie Vs. Shiferraw Jarso

On VOA’s Crossfire program Friday, Kinijit’s (now UDJ) member of parliament Ato Temesgen Zewdie and Woyanne’s puppet head of the rubber stamp parliament, Ato Shiferraw Jarso, were engaged in a brief but heated debate. VOA’s Addisu Abebe should have given them more time or continued the debate today. He cut the debate off prematurely without giving Ato Temesgen a chance to respond.

In the debate, Ato Temesgen has practically admitted that peaceful political activity has become impossible in Ethiopia under the Woyanne dictatorship. He said that Ato Shiferraw has recently summoned him to his office and asked him if he wants to raise his children or not. According to Ato Temesgen, the Woyanne puppet threatened him for demanding to know the details of the land giveaway to Sudan by the Meles regime. Click below the listen the debate.

Meanwhile, Ato Gizachew Shiferraw, Ato Aemero Aweke and Ato Lebawi Abebe of UDJ were arrested while on a working visit in Gojjam yesterday. All three were later released. Also yesterday, the Secretary General of the Oromo Federal Democratic Party (OFDM), Ato Beqele Jirata, was arrested by the Federal Police while on his way to his office. His home was searched and documents were confiscated.

Despite our recent criticism of UDJ, Ethiopian Review admires Ato Gizachew Shiferraw and colleagues for traveling to Gojjam and meet with the people. UDJ needs to do more of this — and stop attacking freedom fighters who raised arms — if it is to be taken as a real opposition party. UDJ also needs to adhere to Kinijit’s 8 Points and stop acting silly by preaching to the people of Ethiopia that Woyanne is not an enemy. Woyanne is more than an enemy. It is a gang of blood thirsty monsters who torture, rape and kill women and children.

  1. A few articles ago and even in the interview with Gibot 7’s representative, you expressed some disappointment at the fact that UDJ decision to take part in the upcoming elections. You accused them of giving EPRDF/the election the legitimacy it doesn’t deserve and here you are today praising UDJ. I say take your time and evaluate before you take a stand in the future.
I also thought you did an amazing job in the interview with Ato Andargachew. You questioned him well and pointed out Ginbot 7’s weaknesses that he was trying hard not to admit by beating about the bush.

  2. I am wondering why all high level woyane members behave the same way after the great ellection, All go raund the bush and distarct the truth than talking what they are supposed to talk. It is all about confused deffense like there master Meles Zenawi.I do not hear from any woyane official that talk to the point and what supposed to talk.In my view that problem come fro meles himself. What ever he said in the parliament he gets lough or considered to be smart by HODAADDERS. So, every one there is trying to follow that footstep. When I was a kid in DERG regime all i heared about him was that he was a great, smart, and articulative leader and wahen i grow up know every thing i heared about him is stupid, now i am sure the same thing would happen on woyanes too.Speciialy for those who think that Meles Zenawi is a SMART LEADER. Now i concluded that who ever comes on top to rule ethiopia he is smart in his time but later…….

  3. Elias,

I had a chance to watch your interview with Ato Gizaw Legesse. I was amazed by the lack of depth and understanding you exhibit. First of all, you have maintained the name of a person whom I know and respect very much and you called him “Woyanne’s puppet”. He is far from it. You sound very arrogant and short sited. You really do not know what you are talking about. I call you “phony Journalist” In fact need to go back to school and learn more about what it means to be balanced journalist. I do not think you have a depth of understanding nor the willing heart to understand other political parties beyond your affiliation.
Leave alone the people who are oppressed and harassed everyday. Those people are like the people who joined the parliament despite all the criticism from inside and out. Please stop making accusation and bogus charges against the true political heroes. Those are the people who are fighting Woyanne’s regime everyday.
