It’s been six months since Ginbot 7 Movement for Freedom and Democracy in Ethiopia was formed. In June 2007, EthiopianReview.com wrote (read here) that the new movement has less than 6 months to prove itself. Did it prove itself to be a viable opposition party? What did it accomplish so far and what is it currently doing?
Ethiopian Review had posed these and other straightforward questions to Ato Andargachew Tsege, a senior official of Ginbot 7, in an interview conducted Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008.
Ato Andargachew said, among other things, that another 2 or 3 years of rule by Woyanne will further devastate Ethiopia and that those in the opposition camp who are talking about the 2010 election are committing political suicide. He said another election under the Woyanne brutal regime is not an option.
Ato Andargachew also said that Ginbot 7 is preparing the ground work for a formidable anti-Woyanne alliance involving several organizations, including EPPF and OLF.

what can you expect from Ginbot7. It may be Western choice but the people elected the one you are ignoring i.e. the group led by engineer Hailu Shawel. How can Dr. Berhanu from a minority or Bertukan which is not elected by the Ethiopian people will be a legitimate heir of KINIJIT.
You may like or dislike the person engineer Hailu but he has millions of followers and should not be ignored or excluded from the Ethiopian politics.
Dear Elias
Thank you for raising the question. You were dadly wrong when you wrote the formation of Ginbot 7 as the reedomtion of Ethiopia.
I will come up with more strong arguement after your posting. But be assured Ginbot 7 will deliver something better than already formed political organizations.
good day

yes, G7 is working properly what the movement have to do.
they organised short wave radio and publishing weekly newspaper within a short period of time. according to my reliable source they are negotiating with two opposition parties currently. also they are doing well regarding diplomatic relations with European and some African countries and with Obama camp. let give them some time. i hope they will be huge force in the near future.
Eliase it is a good start to prove your selff
Yes!! we all ethiopians are ready to remove woyane’s ( Meles Zenawi’s)dictator government.
Did the vicious Woyane seized power six months into its formation?
What did you expect them to do?
Demo Jemerk Elias?
The generation that can’t stop being wrong.
you asked a very good question elias.
but don’t bother analyzing too much because most of us have forgotten about it and were trying to remember which ginbot 7 organization you were talking about.
simply, it is useless. it has no presense in ethiopia, except on cyberspace. our only chance is Bertukan and her Kinijit/UDJ party. whatever they do we should not put down those on the ground working hard under weyane’s 24 hours a day harrassment and devilish rule. especially yesterday nazret.com and OLF founders have finally exposed the true nature of Isayas afewerki. OLF founders out of asmara have showed us that isayas is against ethiopian democracy so whether it is Ginbot 7, EPPF or others in eritrea, they will all become useless for our mission to democratize ethiopia.
our new strategy should be finding creative ways to help Bertukan, Yacob and hailu and their party. we should mobilize to support them financially in secret and at the same time use the current OLF movement of Lencho leta to attract them to support bertukan and other genuine democrats like Bulcha demeksa. let us remember that OPDO tried to label Kinijit as neftenga in 2005. so if we can get the help of OLF to reverse this propaganda by OPDO/TPLF, we can make Bertukan more powerful.
can you imagine what happened in 2005 by brave ethiopians protesting in addis ababa also happening all around in 20 cities and towns of oromia?? our goal for 2010 should be to exponentially multiply the pro-UDJ base so that it would be suicidal for weyane to try to rigg the 2010 election.
of course there are on right truck go G7
Didn’t know they had any steam to begin with. All in your mind, buddy…
We can’t wait to here from you. But I am sure you are not going to analyze anybody who is against Eritrian interest positively.
I can’t wait to hear what Elias has to say. These are questions that people are asking in the past few weeks about Ginbot7.
Ginbot7 is a crazy organization just like you, Mr. Elias.
Down with Shaebya.
The group can call itself Genbot 7 or anything but they have destroyed the democaratic movement that was the desire of the people – the Berhanus are employees of foreign powers and his masters know his blind ambition and offered the pie in the sky and he fell for it – while helping the tplf gang starve the people as revange for voting for democracy – him and his organization are traitors who will join meles just like olf –
The editor of the Ethiopian Review (ER) is doing a great deal of service to our struggle for democracy and freedom by assuming a critical position against the opposition groups of parties. His recent critical assessment of the direction the UDJP is taking has shed light on the true intentions and nature of the party. This party is claiming to be the heir to Kinijit and is yet shying away from raising and standing for what made the Former Kinijt so popular and promising. The 8 or 7 points of Kinijit are the pillars of the party and without them no party or group has a legal or moral ground to be the heir to it. The previous press conference of ms. Birtukan and recent one of Dr. Hailu Araya show that UDJP is changing course or abandoning the core issues of democracy or the 8 (7) points of Kinijit.
The party is already showing the symptoms of the disease i.e. moving towards cooperating with the tyrant Meles Zenawi and function as a cover or loyal party.
I welcome and look forward to read the critical and objective analysis and reflections of ER on Genbot7 too.
aye koster , aterebam gen.
Mr Elias you should be appreciated to bring such an issue to a public forum, but donot forget that every one is entitled to his own views and must be respected and treated equally on your website.I beleive we are being invited to comment, but not neccessarily to support or oppose Ginbot7.
Ginbot 7 is not an opposition party at all,it is more like a liberation movement working in the abscence of a constituency or trying to lead the democratization struggle from abroad. The leaders are not qualified to lead not because of their ability but because of their physical abscence from the community they try to influence. They are currently and previously leaving in a foreign community where their day to day live requires deep involvement at least to earn the living and support ther families .When I read their articles it reminds me the anti Derg era struggle, which is focusing mainly on the problems of the current Gov.Every one in Ethiopia knows what woyane is doing better than Ginbot7 does. The only thing Ginbot 7 doing is telling us in cadre style bold sentences the issues we know well.
Since I was not in favour of them from the bigginnig, and now as well I repeat my words .
Who ever does right for Ethiopia he must be the one who works with Woyane(struggles within Ethiopia, every day feels the pressure with the people, giveup lexury life abroad, giveup family priority, follow the laws of the land,be creative and contineuosly challenge Woyane against it’s own laws and take over his support base by being honest and responsible)
This is somewhat being exercised by UDJ Beyene,Bulcha,Merera, and will be strengthen by the new forum created by Siye and Gebru. This is what I believe is a broad based grass root politics that will eventually gains respect from all people.
Always opposing this one labling the other one will result in Zero politics.I suport Birtukan as as an individual because she is not a politician, she is a unifieng leader, she calls every one to a peacefull means of struggle, without ever condemning others for every miner differences.
Elias:
You are the only person that follows the true ethics of journalism. That means, anyone is on the watchlist of your journalistic activity. Trust me, you are dead right for raising this issue. Due to the backward culture we have, political leaders want to live the life of kings and vassals taking leadership positions and its luxury for granted (pretty much like the old way of Seyume-Egziabeher or appointed by God)
Only in those days you can’t ask kings and monarchs on how they should govern. we are in the era where everyone should be accountable especially if people have entrusted their money, life and time onto them
Weldone Elias
Elias,
thanks for the timely discussion topic. Now it is the time, when ALL opposition poleticians, who are fighting against the fascist regime are just kept quite in order to analyze their past mistakes and to forge future plans.
Weyane seems to be comfortable after deviding UNITY forces, specially CUD and made them fight each other as well after trying to devide LIBERATION fronts specially OLF. The cooperation of CUD and OLF under the umberella of AFD was the shocking event and a night mare for Weyane. Now it seems that project has failed.
I think G7M is a very good movemnt to revive such similar alliance of Unity forces and Liberation fronts, which Weyane tries to hinder by any meanse. The current movement in OLF is encouraging.
It seems OLF devided its self in to three, be it by default or design. One group led by Ob Abbaabiyya is already in Ethiopia leading an Oroganization called EAMC (East African Multilogue Center). This can be a very good support for FDD (Forum for Democratic Dialog) of the “legal” oppositions at home. The second group led by general Kemal Gelchu seems to stress armed struggle to liberate Oromia by empowering ULFO (United Liberation Forces of Oromia). By the way the existence and empowering of ULFO is very necessary to check the very UNITARIST forces, who still nostalgically cry for amharanized and uniform Ethiopia. The third group led by Ob. Daud is as usual the best deplomat and wants to revive AFD or similar alliance between Unity forces and Liberation Fronts.
What we need at the end is the cooperation and coordination of these three alliances: FDD at home, AFD in diaspora and ULFO as a watch dog. G7M as a movement, not party, can do its role in this coordiantion. AEUP of Ato Hailu and UDJP of Ad. Birtukan should join the forum at home aka FDD. EPRP should reconsider its position and join AFD in diaspora. Then the cooperation of the alliance at home, aka FDD with the alliance in diaspora aka AFD is the right recept to get rid of the fascist regime in Ethiopia.
In the mean time it is almost clear that both FDD and AFD try to achieve the same goal, i.e a UNION of autonomous nations in Ethiopia in particular and in the Horn of Africa in general. I think we all can rally behind this noble purpose, be it we are Oromos, Amharas, Tigarus, Gurages, Somalis,Sidamas, Afars, Welayitas, Hadiyas, Kambatas, Kafichos, Agews, Hararis….even Eritreans and Somalians! Thank you!!!!
Elias,
Reading this post, there are lots of questions that come to mind and the least of which is not your failure to explain why you think six months are enough time for an organization like Ginbot 7 “to prove itself”. Forget that, you have not even explained what “proving oneself” means in broadly acceptable terms. But let me skip those for now and ask a couple:
1. Are you a member of Ginbot 7? If not, considering the organization is clandestine, how will you know what they are doing or not in terms of on the ground organization and such?
2. Whether a member of the organization or not, do you believe you have contributed enough to them for you to expect something in return? And do you believe the Ethiopian community at large has provided them with the necessary support to do what they planned? Or are you going to accuse them of failure to gain enough support?
I am just asking. I don’t believe I will get a genuine answer. To be frank, I think you are, knowingly or unknowingly, used by Ginbot 7 for many shrewed purposes. Who better to be trashed by than Elias Kifle when you want to be underestimated, eh?
I really appreciate g-7`s bold and wise move.if we give them ample time and stand by them,we will achieve what we r looking 4.i tink g7 has done marvelous jobs in 6 mnths.don`t be so emotional….elias..yechekolena…atelay hunetawun yalagenazebe analysis kehone…pls don`t post it
Genbot 7 from day one attracted paper tigers. Its leader Berehanu is a paper tiger. his deputy Andargachew is a paper leopard and third in command Eprem Madebo is a paper Jaguar.
Now, the tone of this people 6 month ago was rough and they made it look or sound that they will go to the semien Mountains of Gondar and Wollo to torch the insergency the same way Issayas Afowerki did in Naqfa and Meles Zenawi in Dedebit.
Elias is always doing a wake up call for sleepy citizens who like to treat their political leaders like royality.
Neither Ginbot 7, nor UDJ or Hailu Shawel’s Kinijit serious enough to torch the insergency and by now everyone should give up on them. newer organizations should appear leaving the path taken by this useless (scam) organizations
Western style campaign- shuttle Amsterdam via USA.Talk is cheap.Ethiopian in need of real leadership like Obama figure.
I have been critical against Ginbot 7 for I knew what they have been poposin are conflicting and unpractical. Their objectives and goals were not clearly defined and seems they do not have any concrete idea to what they want to do.
Anything that does not have a clear and achievable objective cannot brng result.
ER has been pushing for Ginbot 7 to form alliance with Asmara, working with other groups to form a unified command and start liberating lands within Ethiopia. With names like Dr Berhanu Nega, it would have been much easy to form a unified command. More people may join the unified resistance. It would have been a game changer. (I had reservation with Issayas, but at this moment to wage an armed resistance a place f training and a country that can provide logistics is needed. AT this moment only thru Eritrea can we wage an effective resistance)
The other option os what the UDJ is doing. Stay within Ethiopia and continue mobilizing the people in a peaceful struggle.
Ginbot 7 is neither mobilizing the people peacefully nor organizing a string resistance somewhere. They failed .
Porbably Ato Andargachew may try to spin their failure and he may tell us that they are “building clandestine networks within Ethiopia and ask us to be patient”. Well, I think these kind of craps ought to be rejected. EITHER THEY HAVE TO WORK WITH ASMARA, form a unified command with other groups or return back to where they were before and start supporting the UDJ.
Other than that they would better shut up for no-one will give time to them. “Fool me once shame on You. Fool me twice shame on me”.

let me say some thing about others before commont on G7;
UDJ officials said congratulation! when the party got lisence from ” woyane electorial board month ago ” ; they assume this ordinary event as a great victory.now they are trying to defeat woyane by preapering “Gitim Mishit” like
young art club.for the rest like Beyene, Lidetu , type dead people are shortly i am saying “Nefs Yimar!”
the only power who rise to defeat woyane at this critical time is G7; The only movement who understand what woyane is and how woyane would fail is G7; you can check the heart beat of Ethiopian people in and out regarding G7; WITH OUT Any exageeration more than 75 percent of the population interest and hope is with G7;
WE hope G7 WILL be the huge and strong power of Ethiopia with in a short time.
It is good to open a discussion on G7. It will help the org to see its own pros and cons. The public view is the biggest instrument for G7 either to grow or to fall. As I understand there is a mix of feelings vis. G7. But, let’s listen Andargachew’s interview first and give our own judgement next.
I hope that every one wants to topple Woyane. The fact that people are disagreeing about the startegy to remove meles doesn’t mean that they are infavor of meles. Meles by all benchmarks is an absolute dictator. He must be discarded by any means. Any evil is better than meles.
looking forward to listen the intreview.
Elias
I wanted to ask to give them more time they just started and i hope they wiil be the major opposition force against the crime regim. We shoul do our part to strength Gibote 7. Please ask Ginbote 7 how they can cooporate with our brothers and sisters in Eritrea. It is good for the Eritrean and Ethiopian to work tyogether for the better future let us be united and fight the cancerious regim in Ethiopia.
VIVA GINBOT 7
Down with East Africa parasitic Woyane!
Dear Elias, first we want you to explain us what you have done for the past 6 months as a journalist before evaluating others. I hope Ato Andargachew may ask this question before his report about G7. Because Evaluation and criticising others are simple work. Please, evaluate yourself to make progress and add something good for the present freedom struggle. Thanks!
Dear Elias it is a good job to pressure G 7. Yisru or Yisebaberu.
Weyanes came through the barrel of gun and they could only leave power through the same method. Gonbet 7 has no choice but to join the arbognoch and serve as its political wing! Aleke dekeke!
Amanuel Zeselam always your comment stink like meles Zenawi
Selam Elias
When i read your piece about Ginbot7 and the discussion you did with one of the excecutive members it is a nice job but what reminds me is a friend of mine when we were in campus did was the same how our political elite now are doing and i want to put what he did and raise pertinent question about the struggle to bring democracy in Ethiopian if you have the good will you can add some ideas and bring the topic for further discussion so that we can build some visions.
To go back what my friend did in campus was, every year there is intecollege compition and those who are participating in the games have advantage of special food which is called “food for the sport team” and my friend would like to benefit by paticipating first he tried 100and 200 meters but failed, then 400 and 800 meters as well failed. He did not gave up but he tried 5000 meters still he was not among who were selected, lastly what he did was that since no one was taking part in 10000 meters he tried to convince the coach and finally selected as a team member and during the competition he was four folded by other participants. What i appreciated him was his commitment but what it shows me was that he has to do everything to get that food.
When i put the above real history in the middle of this is that to atleast show how our struggle is lameful due to multifaceted problems but the main being the trend to be benefited from the output individually not publicly. Why? I have got a theory which i formulated from my expereices in the political arena since the late 1960s.
Let we look at the scenarios below it includes all paties who are functioning in the struggle either pro or contra
1.If we study all parties who are multi-ethnic based or ethnic based share the ideas of the 70s which is
communist/socialist orientation(it is the slogan of the 70s)
2.when we survey almost all party members they are catagorized as “who dined and wined alteast from two parties as members or execucitives (the younger generation excluded <30)
3. Membership to most of the parties were/is done not in transparent ways but secretly(i share the danger with it in Ethiopia but i do not see when living abroad)
4.If we see transition of powers within the parties which is never excercised (if excercised end up with faction forming)is the manifestation how we define “democracy?”
5.In most parties production line of new parties or factions is a modes operandi than discussing crucial differences and solving them immediately
7. The main characters of parties is not to be guided with the by-laws they vote for but according to the ideas of the person who is just chairing the party(Issues and by-laws are secondary but loyality and cultism are more sound in the reality.
The above senario are the main characterstics for most of the paties in my opinion and we have to come to ourselves and think for a second and discuss in this issue and unite to throw the Woyane regime and atleast bring a breathing area for ourselves and the people of Ethiopia
thanks

Hello Elias:
Please know that this is not a complaint, and in fact I appreciate the service you have been providing ever since you started ER Radio Network. The interviews have meaning and purpose..
– It seems like the G7M interview is not achieved and available today.
– Your 2007-2008 audio achieve is not accessible. Repeatedly, only pop ups show up.
– Q. Whatever happened to the list of radio programs announced on this web site in late 2007 that were to join ER Radio Network. Is it a net work failure, are those stations pursuing their own or on a pause?.
Greetings,
The TPLF/EPRDF have started withdrawing from Somalia. They will soon complete the withdrawal and leave Somalia for Somalis. Would Somalis reconstitute themselves as a viable state with working government? Given their track record in the past twenty years, it is highly unlikely. Time for us, Ethiopians, to worry about our problems.
The central question for us is how to repalce the TPLF/EPRDF government. If you do not support peaceful struggle, then you are supporting war to replace TPLF/EPRDF. But, have you ever thought where war could possibly take the country? If you do not care about the country, the war choice can take you wherever you want to go. A group concerned about the future of the country wrote the following. It discusses the possible effects war which Genbot 7 is ready to join. Have patience and read it. Write back your opinion.
“We do not believe clandestine, armed violent organizations stand for the country. They might tell us that the violence is to bring democracy, but we could not find evidence to support it. In fact, resorting to violence is a sign of wholesale rejection of law and democracy. Genbot 7 is illegal organization in the country because it uses “all inclusive means” to overthrow the TPLF/EPRDF government. Incontestably, “all inclusive means” suggests the use of arms. We doubt if it is true, but Genbot 7 claims it is mobilizing the masses in a clandestine organization. To start with, we do not understand the need for such an organization because there already exists one. To a large measure, the program of Genbot 7 goes in line with the memorandum of understanding of the Alliance for Freedom and Democracy (AFD), an organization created three years ago by the OLF, ONLF, EPPF, etc. The AFD was later joined by the CUD (international) in the U.S.
The place of Genbot 7 is with AFD and, we hope, it will be received by the AFD members with fanfare and jubilation. With the recent “shake up” within the OLF to meet the demands of Genbot 7, the way for a cooperation in politics, military, intelligence and diplomacy is wide open. The only problem will be the inherent undemocratic nature of Genbiot 7 which requires to be joined by other organizations rather than it joins an existing one. Furthermore, Genbot 7 wants to be joined by others in its own terms such as approval of the unity of the country. The OLF and ONLF will laugh at this type of suggestion since they will not negotiate the political stand they had advanced for decades. Unity of the “empire” is something they will not endorse. They might probably join a temporary, broad and loose front to conduct war for “democracy”, but, even for that, in their own terms rather than that of Genbot 7. For them, democracy in this context is not an ultimate goal to work for but a means to facilitate separation.
Genbot 7 leaders are delusional if they think that democracy will check separatism and then render it unnecessary. The truth is far from this. If separatism can be solved by democracy, Europeans would have solved it long ago. Think of the United kingdom (in the case of Northern Ireland), France (in the case of Corsica), Spain (in the case of Basque), Greece and Turkey (in the case of Cyprus) and several others. None of these countries succeeded to check separatism using democracy. Opposition parties in these countries never joined separatist organizations to defeat governments; on the contrary, they resoundingly rejected separatism. It is doubtful if leaders of Genbot 7 are smarter than leaders of opposition parties in Europe. Allying with separatist organizations will make Genbot 7 a promoter of interest of separatist organizations rather than promote unity of the country. The OLF and ONLF will be the main beneficiaries of any arrangement with Genbot 7.
Just two weeks ago, the leader of Genbot 7, in a radio inaugural speech said once TPLF/EPRDF are removed, we will solve our differences with armed groups through dialogue. If dialogue does not work, the people will make a determination. Nobody knows what this determination involves and which people makes what determination. Genbot 7 also says it works to remove TPLF/EPRDF and not to take power. It has no answer for the big question: who takes power? What it wants is to polarize people, pulverize society and create a situation for power vacuum. Once that is done, armed groups will sort it out. It is a repeat of the mistake of the student movement of the 1960s, 70s and after. The new generation should refuses to follow the path that led to national disasters.
Genbot 7 does not see the risk the occupation of Somalia poses to the country. In fact, it is the most fundamental problem we face right now. We appreciate that the opposition is urging the government to withdraw its army from Somalia. The opposition says that the cost in human lives, money and materials is too much. We wonder how they failed to realize that occupation of other country and people is wrong. It seems that if the cost is less, they might allow the government to stay. We feel that they should insist that the occupation is illegal and the government must unconditionally withdraw its army. Whenever Somalia is the issue, we all should remember the occupation of our country by the Italians.
The suggestion that we will be in danger if the army withdraws from Somalia is a propaganda ploy. Given the large army the country has, it can defend itself from any attack that might come. As in everything else, we see that the government is not listening. If the government thinks the country is secure by occupying Somalia, the false sense of security will begin to crumble soon. A paper smuggled to the country tells a grim story. Not long ago, a high level international conference with delegates from the Middle East, North Africa, the Sudan and Djibouti was held in Asmara. In that conference, an academic from a university in North Africa with remarkable expertise on contemporary political history of the region has made a fascinating presentation. It was about Somalia’s lost chances to reconstitute herself as a state.
The academic started by discussing the occupation of Afghanistan by the USSR in the 1980s and its adverse effects reverberating to this day. He said the USSR has disintegrated and Afghanistan is ungovernable. It also poses a serious danger to the security of the Western world. He explained how the Soviet Union that existed for seventy years collapsed after a decade of occupation of a much poorer, weaker and smaller neighbor. He did not claim the collapse resulted directly from the occupation, but suggested that it is one of the main reasons for the collapse. His guess is Ethiopia might as well collapse and give way to a number of new states due to occupation of Somalia. His point is both the USSR and Ethiopia are lured by their enemies to take harder positions on their neighbors and precipitate their own demise.
In the case of the USSR, the plan of the U.S. government was to deliberately draw the USSR to its own Vietnam and bring the cold war to an end. With modern armaments and technical support from the U.S. and Europe and financial support from Saudi Arabia and others, the Afghan resistance prevailed over the larger, well trained and equipped and disciplined Soviet army. At the end of the war, the moderate Afghan resistance lost power to Islamic fundamentalists. The plan to end the cold war worked but Afghanistan remains a problem to this day.
Our neighbors in North Africa and the Middle East started a covert project to experiment the USSR – Afghan disaster on us years before the Ethiopian army entered into Somalia. Eritrea is chosen to replicate the role of Pakistan in the sub – region. Thanks to its creativity and long experience in such matters, Eritrea is not hampered from active involvement in the project because it shares no boundary with Somalia.
The smuggled paper we mentioned earlier carries a wealth of information. The covert project was thorough with its background study of the USSR and Ethiopia and persuasive with its inferences. Leaving aside the differences between the USSR and Ethiopia the paper highlights, the following summarizes its inferences. The situation in the USSR before and during the occupation of Afghanistan resembles the situation in Ethiopia during and after the occupation of Somalia. Like the USSR, Ethiopia has a constitution that recognizes separatism. Like the USSR, Ethiopia has a government that uses divide and rule as a means to stay in power. Like the USSR, Ethiopia has a government that feeds differences than similarities among ethno – linguistic groups. Like the USSR, Ethiopia has a government whose relation with the west is unpredictable. As in the USSR, a power vacuum will be created if the TPLF/EPRDF falls due to violence.
The paper also mentions factors that never existed in the USSR that makes the collapse of Ethiopia more possible. Unlike in the USSR, there are separatist organizations with decades of existence in Ethiopia ready to seize the opportunity and declare independence. Unlike in the USSR, there is a government with dubious plan of separatism if removed from power by force. It is further mentioned that these circumstances will make it easier to create a wide separatist front that cannot be defeated by unity forces. Several minor factors which feed this situation are added too. We are shocked by the paper’s unexpected revelations. We believe that the attempt to replicate the USSR – Afghan conflict in the Horn region is an active one.
The paper concludes by justifying why the project should be advanced aggressively. It says Muslims in Somalia are occupied by Christians as Muslim Afghans were occupied by Communists and atheists. These are infidels with different stripes. So, no wonder why Somalis and Afghanis turned to Islam as organizing force to fight infidel occupiers. Ethiopia is an aggressive force bent on conquering and occupying Somalia as the USSR was regarding Afghanistan; both are not in legitimate wars to defend their populations or borders. Somalis are fighting Ethiopia to force it withdraw from their land with the support of states from the Middle East, North Africa and beyond as the Afghans did. Ethiopia unheeded the warning of the international community (including that of the U.S.) not to invade Somalia and withdraw once it has invaded. The USSR had also unheeded the call of the international community to withdraw from Afghanistan.
It is now Ethiopia against dozens of wealthy Muslim and secular states. The fact that USSR and Ethiopia entered into war they cannot win is positive from their enemies points of view. They are asking to imagine how the world would have looked like if the USSR had defeated and annexed Afghanistan. With the USSR taking the Persian Gulf, the cold war would have intensified and possibly triggered the third world war. As suggested to them recently, Ethiopia and Kenya might be considering to divide and annex Somalia. We feel that even if the war ends by Ethiopia’s withdrawal or defeat, Somalia will not be divided and annexed. In fact, once Ethiopia withdraws – defeated or otherwise – Somalia will emerge a formidable force to effectively undo Ethiopia.
Genbot 7 might have deliberately ignored this. In the next room where the international conference we mentioned earlier was held, the OLF and ONLF were finalizing a newly discovered strategy to achieve independence. The EPPF was not invited even as an observer. Never before had the OLF and ONLF came up with such a strategy. The strategy focused on the existing three models in the Horn of Africa itself.
First, they saw the Somalia model. This model favours the dissolution of a central government, its infrastructure, defense and police. The OLF and ONLF agreed that this model will create a power vacuum which makes automatic separation possible. The EPLF had used it to achieve its goal of separation. As witnessed in Somalia, however, the problem with this model is lack of recognition of the new state or states by the international community. In the case of Eritrea, it was the TPLF/EPRDF government that paved the way for its recognition. The OLF and ONLF acknowledged the effectiveness of this model but also its shortcomings in the absence of a central government that will open the way for recognition. About a decade ago, the TPLF/EPRDF was the most favoured government for this model, but it is no more. Now, their hope is a transitional government that will replace the TPLF/EPRDF and pave the way for referendum on self determination and separation. The nucleus of such a transitional government is the Alliance for Freedom and Democracy which Genbot 7 is poised to join. There is fear though. If the Alliance fails to take power at the center, an extreme right wing Amara-Tigre power might effectively turn the Oromo – Somali struggle for separation way back to its enfancy.
Second, they considered the Ethiopia model. This model is closely related to the first. It relies on the existence of a central government in Ethiopia that favours the separation of certain peoples and not others. The basis of the model is the separation of Eritrea some fifteen years ago. That separation was justified by the TPLF/EPRDF government using history, politics and choice of people. The same government, however, refused to extend such justifications to Oromos and Somalis. In effect, with Eritrea out, it fought hard to keep the rest of the country together. The most preferred government for the OLF and ONLF is a prototype of the TPLF of the 1980s and 1990s. As said earlier, one such candidate is the AFD. Such a government, with Oromos and Somalis out, will recognize the separated states while closing the way for other states not to do the same – at least until the separated states are recognized by the international community. Furthermore, it will apply force to quash local resistance and opposition to the separation.
Third, they discussed the Sudan model. This model recognizes the right to a referendum on separation. In the Sudan, an agreement was signed between the central government and group(s) fighting for separation. The agreement included the right to conduct a referendum after a fixed number of years. Two conditions were met for the agreement to be signed. First, the balance of power in the battle field favoured the separatists. Second, the international community was angry with the Sudan. In fact, it threatened the Sudanese government with sanctions for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. On the bases of this agreement, southern Sudan will hold a referendum in a couple of years to determine its future. The ONLF actively promotes this model. However, it has failed to tip the balance of force in its favour. As observed in the past few months, the international community was angry with the TPLF/EPRDF government. It even started talking about the commission of genocide, war crimes or crimes against humanity in the region. It might take sometime before the ONLF makes a break – through using this model.
At the end, both the OLF and ONLF agreed to pursue all the models as the situation permits.
If Genbot 7’s “all inclusive struggle” is to translate into reality, no where other than the Amara region is the most conducive one. The guess is that Genbot 7 is already connected the EPPF – an Amara armed group in the region. The group is officially backed by our tiny neighbor to the north – Eritrea. Such an armed adventure is more riskier than can be imagined.
Some years ago, we said the following on this same page. ” … For lack of an inclusive political system, the country seems to drift apart by wrong unofficial alliances and isolationist strategies. Except one, none of us in this (discussion) group belongs to the Amara ethnic group. But anything that brings Amaras and Tigreans at loggerheads terrifies me. The north of the country was and still is the main force determining the future of the country. From their general political disposition and violent practices observed over decades, it seems that they are not ready to change the business of politics. First, think of Eritreans who left the country after decades of unimaginable destructive civil war that left themselves and us under bad governments and a medieval type of economic and social situation. Second, take the Tigreans. Northerners themselves, they fought for decades and again left themselves and the rest of the country in bad situation. It does not matter whether the two wars were fought at the same time; their effects were devastating. Now, embittered by the brutal and deliberate exclusion from the political process by the TPLF, Amaras seem to have raised arms. We have heard that a considerable number of people are joining an armed group in the Amara region and other areas in the country and their ranks are growing fast. They are politically, financially, materially, technically and diplomatically supported by Eritrea and underground organizations both in and out of the country. Local urban guerrillas whose emergence and persistence indicate lack of accommodation have become part of life. Given their history, I would guess that the third emerging violent force in the north will fundamentally change the country as EPLF and TPLF did. Probably sooner than might be expected. If you contrast these series of violence originating in the north to draw and redraw the country’s political configuration, you will curiously observe that people in the south, east and west are still fledgling to emerge as political forces. Despite decades of existence, the OLF and ONLF have not succeeded to do what the northerners did and continue to do in a relatively short time. We are southerners and the idea here is not to present ourselves as politically weak. The truth is that we tend to be less violent compared to northerners. So, I am just questioning why our way of life in the west, south and east is not emulated by northerners. The TPLF/EPRDF want to monopolize violence and it seems they have not achieved it. We do not understand why the TPLF/EPRDF are unwilling to come up with some kind of comprehensive peace strategy to involve all stakeholders in the country’s political life.”
Given the newfound militantism and courage of the OLF and ONLF due to the possible alliance with Genbot 7, the country should prepare itself for a tripartite ethno-military entity. If this entity succeeds to remove TPLF/EPRDF from power by force and impose itself as transitional government, it will have no Tigray to govern. Following, Oromia and Ogaden will be gone. Once these regions are gone, the rest cannot be kept together. Add the problem of Somalia to this situation. Surely, Genbot 7 has no clue which direction it is taking the country and its people.
As presented above, the country is faced with the risk of collapse due to the occupation of Somalia. The OLF, ONLF and EPPF are more than ever committed to war. Under such situation, who in his right mind would support Genbot 7 to unleash its “all inclusive” struggle that will adversely affect the country? Given our horrendous experience under the TPLF – a one time armed violent organization that ” liberated ” us from the Derg, would any one support to be liberated by armed gangs? How about the horrible experience of our neighbors to the north under the EPLF that fought for decades for independence? Would our people endure another violence to be perpetrated by self-proclaimed liberator warlords? Since the Italian occupation, people in this country have not lived in peace. They are tired of self-proclaimed liberators. How about the AFD as a transitional government that will work for the interest of the OLF and ONLF? Would the EPPF fight with the OLF and ONLF if they break their word about unity? How about Eritrea that works for its own interests? Do you believe that Eritrea wants the unity of Ethiopia instead of smaller and weaker nations in the region? We do not buy Genbot 7’s talk to remove TPLF/EPRDF without any plan about the future. We will not return to claindestinity, illegality and violence for no use. As done in the past, opposition parties will build on what is already achieved and win office through the ballot box. If they do not win, they will make more gains in the next election.
Given the difficult political and economic situation the country is in now, the use of force to remove the TPLF/EPRDF is the worst choice. We would not say, as some do, that TPLF/EPRDF are not the enemy; they are. But there are much worse enemies that threaten the existence of the country than TPLF/EPRDF right now. No country means no people to govern. So, even for Genbot 7, the investment will not bring a return if the country does not exist. The impending risk of end of the country has presently created an obvious political divide between opposition parties that want to win power through the ballot box and those who want to win through war and violence. Those who do not want to see an imminent end of the country have rightly adopted, both in principle and practice, a peaceful struggle. They are persuaded that war and violence will contribute to the creation of a power vacuum that will enhance the chances of separatist armed warlords to achieve their goals.
The best choice for the people right now is an orderly transfer of power through the ballot box rather than attempting to snatch it. Orderly transfer of power will close openings for power vacuum and ensure that elected representatives take office without disrupting economic, cultural and social activities. Alliance with warlords and investing in war and violence are wrong and risky. With warlords, the future has always been unknown, unknowable and bleak. Despite relentless hounding, the camp that prefers peaceful struggle will prevail but there is no guarantee without working hard to achieve it.
Good luck for the peace camp. “
I am fully supported the idea of Amanuel Zeselam’s comment above. I also admired Elias question on timely manner. For Ginbot 7, to form a movement and run a website and Radio will not be a enough stragle. It does not takes a political organization to run a web site and radio. The main excepected duties were to creat a strong collision with all armed groups….that is of course, should begin with Ereterian’s leader. They should not be shy about it!!! by now should already opened an office at Asmara and prepare to open another one at Somalia. G-7 should know better, we Ethiopians at diaspora did not need any kind of explanation regarding their movement. WE GOT ENOUGH OF IT. JUST DO THE JOB AND SHOW US SOME PROGRESS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!! Anything less would be the end of your support among Ethiopians. Talking to one group at a time is, just time buying exceuse. Sit like a man face to face with all parties and creat a big collision arm strugle!!! As far as what G-7 trying to tell us creating underground network in Ethiopia, should be showing by now after six months. Atleast some parts of the country fanflet papers should be circling round as a sign of underground movement. Nothing has been notice so far!!
– Regarding Ginbot7 Movement, although I have forever lost trust in Dr. Birhanu/Andargachew and Co.’s group, and that they are as destructive as they are constructive, they continue to draw some attention. Both Dr. Berhanu and Andargachew as participants of Ethiopian politics since their their early youth, and some times I try to reason post Kinijit split.
– It takes all kinds to build a nation, and theirs is one of the few kinds. If Dr. Berhanu was one of the archtectects of Kinijit and his prediction that by forming a coalition of the four parties will result in a better victory as opposed to each one running as an independent party, why did he become so over taken to start eroding the legendary coalition while he was in prison?.
– At least the move the last six months had been more transparent and especially declaring their stand, forming their movement and starting the radio station.
– Their web site is more for those who really spend many hours of reading political articles, propaganda, opinion etc. It is just that, and not inviting enough to a diverse people of interest, education, etc.
– -Their radio program could have more worth for Ethiopians in the country who can not get such variety of broadcast from VOA and other major international forecasts. In the long run, it will help prepare people to gradually form some sort of motivation, participation, and reflection and ultimately even an up rise. That could also indirectly help peace movement parties like Kinijit-AEUP, Kinijit-Andenet etc.
– Movement from abroad? I don’t think it is a bad idea for different reasons.
1. There are thousands of people in exile and it could become a means to strengthen their mission from abroad.
2. To have some kind of link externally is strategic and for any unforeseen future, a well organized movement /voice could be helpful.

One concern is, too much “dark news and propaganda” broadcasted with out some variation added to it may not be as empathic and considerate are the reality of people’s lives in Ethiopia. That just by it self, while standard of living is frustrating does not turn into bread over night. So, Ginbot7 needs to sprinkle its radio program with some advice on Economics and other issues as well.
Amanuel Zeselam,
You are either a dead EPRP symetyzer or just a simple weyane hodam cadre,
Because, you are always against Ginbot 7 with out no substance,
For those of you who are expecting a lot from Ginbot 7 with out your contriution and keep balming leaders of ginbot 7. I simply say shame on you…shame on you….
If anyone who is agaisnt the weyane regime, is easily go along with ginbot 7 or find another alternative to fight weyane, other wise just simply come to computer to critize ginbot 7 is a sign of idiot and naviety, abo sint doma ras ale bakacheh…
so, elais dont let the idiot groups of weyane and eprp critize ginbot 7 since they have no moral to do so.
Bravo leaders of ginbot 7 and most ethiopians are very satisfied by every move of ginbot 7. And ginbot 7 has lauched thier radio very quickly to fasten the struggle which is a big move compare how long ago they created thier organization.
I urge all ethipians to stand along with the leaders of ginbot 7 to ultimaltly destroy the weyane group soon.
Lets support Ginbot 7 by any thing we can, if we want to see a change. other wise lets stop to be a dreamer to changes with out our input. If we have not support Ginbot 7 yet lets do our part and see the outcome, but if we are not willing to support ginbot 7, but expects a lot from gonbot 7 lets shut up okk…okkkk shut up while leaders of ginbot 7 work the ulmightly of the ethipian people to destroy the weyane criminal network.

The only trustworthy party of the Opposition is AEUP(All Ethiopia Unity Party)having clear political stand, without compromising the soverignity of Ethiopia and with millions of supporters in our homeland. Other opportunist groups are wasting their time by condemning others, while they are not doing any tangible deeds.
Ginbot7 has no army, they make too much noise and too much jazz. they should rather cooperate with EPPF. EPPF patriots are the true ethiopains who are sacrificing their lives in tekeze desert to overthrow TPLF.
senedu K., you must be a hidden Weyane supporter or some kind of hodam! you wrote so much with no substance at all.
Isnt it the TPLF who is using arms murdering and terrorizing our people now? Please go and give your lessons to meles gangs! Ethiopians will use any means including arms to eliminate the TPLF!
Sorry Elias and ER readers, but from what I got on this interview the Genbot 7 seems to lack courage and vision. Here we have in Eritrea, a proven leadership, dedicated to the benefit of the people as opposed to its own. We have a government that dear to stand the bully of our time, the USA for which many consider to be “Crazy”. Here we have in Eritrea, a country and government who is willing and able to stand by the Ethiopian masses via their representative armed oppositions. And Ato Andargachew Tsege lacks the balls to state the obvious, which is to make a strategic relation with our cousins up north and deal a heavy blow to our common enemy who is supported by the entire world. What is secret about making an alliance that benefits both the Eritrean and Ethiopian people? As a starter, why is it taking them this long to establish a working relationship with, say, the EPPF, TPDM, OLF and ONLF? Don’t they know that Eritrea and only Eritrea is providing support of all the groups from the LIMITED RESOURCES it has? Folks, this is sad and I don’t think it will get any better unless and until we have some visionary leadership that is able to look beyond the shadow of its nose!
Bla bla bla bla bla endlesS rhetoric. People get back to work and feed your family. Those who are creating HAVOC dont have family. They die single at 70. They never want to give opportunity for the younger gerneration. This are the same people who have been claiming to fight for the oppressed since their teens. They are the exact copies of woyane which is dictator. They only difference is they dont have power. So much blood in their hands. They cant sleep well. What we need is change, change of personality or culture. The communists have to go away.
elias ,don’t u think a little rough on G7. i know you have a point. i listened your interview with G7 repersentative. sometimes, i like your question, nice, good job. but, regarding the detail strategy of sturggle should be left to G7. i have full faith on the leaders of G7.
I GIVE THEM MANY CREDITS,,,TO BEGIN WITH NOT BE FOOLED BY WOYANNES LIKE THEIR FRIENDS IN UDJ. I WILL GIVE THEM “A” IN THAT. REJECTING WOYANNE,,NOT ACCOMPANYING WOYANNE TO ITS TRANSITION TO EXTEND ETHIOPIAN PEOPLE MISERY FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS.YEAH..ATLEAST THEY ARE NOT HELPING WOAYANNE LIKE THEIR FRIENDS DOING IN UDJ.
MY NEXT POINT,THEY TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH STH.LIKE THE NEWSPAPER, RADIO,,,IT IS DIFFERENT …GIVES IMAGE TO G7.GIVES A FORM FOR THE STRUGGLE. I BELIEVE WE NEED TO GIVE THEM TIME. WE SHOUDLDN’T EXPECT A MIRACLE. IT IS A STRUGGLE AND TAKES TIME.
I AM NOT SAYING THEY SHOULD NOT BE CRITICIZED. OFCOURSE, AS YOU SAID IN YOUR INERVIEW WE EXPECT MORE FROM THEM.IN MY OPINION THEY ARE DOING GOOD,,BUT STILL WE NEED MORE FROM THEM.BUT,THAT DOESN’T MEAN TO BE READY TO DISCREDIT THEM AND COMPLAIN ON THEM.TIME WILL TELL.
OVERALL,THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR WONDERFUL JOB. THAT IS WHY YOUR WEB SITE IS NUMBER ONE ETHIOPIAN SITE.
THANKS AGAIN.
Dear Ato Andargachew, You have clearly answered my questions, really great interview!!
Thank you!!
G7 is not a wayanne certified organisation ; it represents the Will of a nation. Since wayanne refused to transfer power to the elected party in 1997, no other mechanism to remove it except by violence. The G7 and EPPF must operate in alliance to liberate Ethiopia. When you choose to stand-up to face your enemy , you creat value . In doing so, you creat yourself. For most of us freedom is the source of human dignity. A human being is, after all, essentially nothing. All that exists at your center is an ability to choose. Therefore, you’re no more than the sum of your actions.Support G7 and EPPF for the correct choice they made!!
