A historic town hall meeting was held jointly by Alliance Liberty, Equality, and Justice in Ethiopia (ALEJE) and Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) on Sunday, July 10, 2011 at the Sheraton National Hotel in Arlington, VA. During the meeting, Dr. Berhanu Nega, Chairman of Ginbot 7 and ALEJE, Dr. Nuro Dedefo, Executive Committee member and Head of Legal Affairs of OLF, and Dr. Getachew Begahsaw, Professor of Economics addressed the audience on several vital and topical issues with regard to the current political conditions in Ethiopia, and the urgent need to forge a broad alliance. I agree with Dr. Getachew’s comment, but in some cases i have comment—- authority transfer to youth like Beka is premature and it would be a bench mark and a rift for woyane to create a division. It is a time of inclusion, it is a time of unity, but i believe it is not a time of authority transfer.

  6. I can almost see Woyanes shaking in their boots,for no doubt this is the nightmare they have been conniving to prevent happening the last 20 years of their tyranny. Never mind the program and even the efficacy of this New Coalition, the very fact that the OLF and other Ethiopian organizations met under one roof and pledged to work together to remove Africa’s new apartheid represents a huge psychological blow to the Woyane. They never thought it could happen and happen it did and now it’s up to all Ethiopians who seek freedom and democracy for that unfortunate land to make it work and hasten the demise of the evil regime sitting in our beloved country. Make no mistake Woyanes will leave no stone unturned to nip this movement in the bud and kill it before it even takes off. They may even pull of some surprises to bribe and appease those member organizations of the NC, and particularly the OLF, in terms offering political concessions to create a split from the very beginning. But I believe we seem to recognize now that any lasting solution to Ethiopia’s problems must be properly anchored on political consensus built around the wishes and aspirations of the Oromos and Amharas. That simply is the inescapable reality of Ethiopian politics whether one likes it or not. So congratulations to all those who made this rapproachment possible; they deserve our unreserved support so this noble effort reaches fruition.

  7. This is a good step forward. I think it is time to create a shadow government by the combined forces of ONLF, OLF and G7.

    Now there is a very important problem of infiltration. If you can NOT solve it, it is pointless to work together. I suggest a geographical compartmentalization of the organizations thereof. What does that mean? I am talking about organizing your cells by a geographically minimizing system whereby it is almost impossible to be infiltrated. Then move from there upwards. THis way, in the unlikely event one cell is infiltrated, atleast the rest will survive.

    I consider the challenge for OLF and G7 in the coming days will be MOSTLY INFILTRATION. There will be trouble makers. And there will be arguments and fights. It is inevitable. It will be most likely instigated by infiltrators. G7 has been more or less free of this problem and I can almost see happening now. What is OLF doing to avoid such a situation? Everything depends on what G7 and OLF do to get rid off infiltrators amongst themselves.

  8. I have listened to the speeches by those 3 Ethiopian doctors: Dr. Nuru Dedefo, Dr. Birhanu Nega, and Dr. Getachew Begashaw. I hate to comment on their speeches but I must do it.

    I wish the two doctors, Dr. Nuru Dedefo and Dr. Birhanu Nega had spoken in the languages they are good at in explaining their views to their audiences. Dr. Nuru had a very hard time to explain his thoughts in the Amharic language, and I am very sorry for him that he had failed to first master the Amharic language and then get his doctoral degree; therefore, I would call him ተብታባ, and I hope he would go back to school and learn the Amharic language.

    I thought Dr. Birhanu Nega’s presentation was very good when he talked about the common Ethiopian food, song, celebrities, musicians, writers, athletes, funerals – things that are common in all our Ethiopian societies, things that can unite us, but he had a big problem in limiting himself to the Amharic language. I saw him fighting hard to avoid the English language coming into his Amharic words. I saw him mixing the two languages together and presenting them to his audiences. He tried, using his hand, to push out the English language away from the Amharic language, but it was a lost battle. So I call him ዘባራቂ. He must present his speech either in English or in Latin, or in Wuragie. I like his views though!

    Dr. Getachew Begashaw delivered his speech in an excellent Amharic language. He reminded his audiences ahead of time that he had no Amharic word that precisely tells the exact definition of “ethnicity.” He said: “the word ዘር does not define it. The word ጎሳ does not define it.” So he told his audiences he was going to use ethnicity as it is. He is absolutely right there is no any Amharic word that defines ethnicity. Perhaps, the other Amharic word that comes closer to ethnicity is ወገን or የወንዜ ልጅ but the Geez language has it, and that word is ነገድ, and that is the only word that I can think of for the moment. Any way, for his honesty and command of the Amharic language, I would call him ingenious and gracious!

  9. This is an important development. The OLF leadership must be congratulated for trying to come out of its isolation.

    The history, current lives and the future of Oromos is inseparable from other Ethiopians. Oromo nationalists therefore must continue to find ways and means of building dual identity where Oromo nationalism can co-exist with Ethiopian nationalism. The two nationalisms are not necessarily opposing forces.

    With regard to the Transitional Government, the appears to be consensus, not just between Ginbot 7 and OLF but among the broader segement of the opposition. The two parties however still need to move further and articulate the program of the Transition period. They must articulate how competition for power will not lead to conflict and splits. The checks and balances that can endanger the unity of the country need to be articulated in full. Otherwise the marriage can be a marriage of convinence, evidently without true love.

  11. This is the right way for peace, unity and development. Ethiopia’s problems can be solved if people are united, if people respect the culture, language and values of each other. This is the first step for emancipation of all and the fall of Woyanes.

I can’t help feeling the meeting is between Dr. Birhanu, Dr. Begashaw and OLF. Ginbot 7, (ALEJE) or what ever other acronym that will come tomorrow seems to me is Dr. Berhanu with different outfit. It has this unsettling that feeling it is all about him and nothing else. And After all the negotiations of 2005 with Vicky Hudson and giving away small pieces of victory till CUD is left with nothing I don’t know if I have the stomach to give all chips to Dr. Berhanu.

  21. I like this. This is what I was waiting for. Hopefully all oppositions will come forward and make a difference to our country. First of all we have to start to be civil and matured. That means, we have to avoid all name calling, hate words or uncivilized manners when we challenge the current government in Ethiopia. We do not have to use street words to define woyane because that will make us a bunch of gangesters not better than woyane. For example, the nonsense or very childish words used by Elias Kifle makes my stomach sick and undermine oppositions movement. I don’t know how Elias see this kind of approach very suitable. Oppositions divisions, unpleasant or irrelevant word selection, and excluding tigre people and as well as the lack of disengagement with OLF, ONLF, and other ethnic groups in the struggle makes woyane to stay on power for the last twenty year. As Dr. Getachew points out, we have to find a new strategy and also a big commitment from OLF, and ONLF to assure the people of Ethiopia they stand for unity. In my opinion, the Arab kind of uprising revolution fail in Ethiopia because of fear of the ethnic opposition groups not because of fear of woyane weapons..fear of civil wars. Not because woyane tell people about OLF because the Ethiopian people fear of separation.

They are using the technic europeans used in 18th and 19th ceturies, which in today’s standard a 5 year old baby can understand. The did similar confussions to may oromos, that the ethio under Amhars leadership amounts to returning to the Neftegna system. They make sure that only Amharas and Oromos with these mentalities can join the politics in Ethiopia. The relation between these retarded Amaras and Oromos with the TPLF not better than that of lord and slave of feudal system.
    No mature Amhara or Oromo will be entrusted with the game of politics in Ethiopia now. They can even make a mass firing if they think the game is unbalanced. For rthat matter Oromos and Amharas intermarried. They live together with no problem until weyane the preacher of evil came to the middle of the country with evil of their own.
    It is not too late to salvage our integrity. With due respect to all tribes, Oromos and Amharas have a key in their own hands to unlock the TPLF devilish door slamed on us for over two decades. Oromos killed by Oromos in 20 yrs unnder the TPLF order are many times fold of oromos killed by Neftegnas over a century a go. After all the neftegna problem was totally resolved by students movement abot 4 decades ago. Can some one tell me how many amharas are with no Oromo blood or how many oromos with no amhara blood? Coming together of Amharas and Oromos can shake the whole being of TPLF with no fighting. Nothing more than this union can scare weyanes.They work hard and invest a lot on this weakness.By calling dead neftegna , TPLF is terrorizing oromos live. If so the G7, OLF, and ALEJE must unconditionally invite othe opposition groups, working inside Ethiopia and build provisional goverment in exile and start working on how to tacle the bloody woyane junta. Then call for general election for building a democratic government under the rule of law, thereafter there shall NO factions or Liberation organizations.
