An Egyptian mining company, ASCOM, finds a large gold deposit in Beninshangul, a region in western Ethiopia, according to Reporter.
Ethiopia’s ethnic apartheid junta gave a massive plot of land (8,000 sq km) to ASCOM in 2008 after forming a partnership with a Woyanne-affiliated company named Ezana Mining, whose partners include Meles Zenawi’s wife Azeb Mesfin.
ASCOM found the gold deposit near the site of the newly announced Nile River dam project.
Meles has offered Egypt co-ownership of the Nile Dam.
Meles doublespeak
While signing lucrative business deals with Egypt and selling away Ethiopia’s land, Meles turns around and complains about Egypt — and there are many fools who believe him. The partnership between Meles and Egypt in looting Ethiopia is stronger than ever.

First and most, the Egyptian company is not a genuine mining company. Ask those working there. They say that “the Egyptians have other business here in Ethiopia by this mining company name that we do not know but for sure not mineral exploration. They (the Egyptians) do not know the basics of mineral exploration let alone to find any deposit.”
Except Adola gold deposit and many other non-metallic deposits in the country, which were established by the Derg have you ever seen a single deposit that has been found by the TPLF/EPLF. What we know is that they are destroying those hard earned mining sites by the derg let alone to find one. What is lamenting is the society who is always giving ears to “Reporter” = TPLF/EPLF = Walta = who all are EVIL.
Tazabi.
My heart sinks, the wealth of the people is being squandered by criminals and thugs.
At least we know where the gold is, thanks to the Egyptian Company, ASCOM: We know gold is in Ethiopia; oil is in Ethiopia; coffee is in Ethiopia; cotton is in Ethiopia, and everything we need Ethiopia has.
On the other hand, Meles is in Ethiopia; Azeb is in Ethiopia; Al Amoudi is in Ethiopia; Aba Paulos is in Ethiopia, and every person we don’t need Ethiopia has. Let us keep the former ones and discard the latter ones.
How about this:

ASCOM is not a legitimate mining company; it is a company formed and backed by the Egyptian Govt to pursue intelligence tasks under the cover. Time will tell all.
Selamta,
Thanks for the link. It is worth watching the clip and reading the report.
Here is an interesting quote from the Indian project at the Gambella site:
“It’s very good land. It’s quite cheap. In fact it is very cheap. We have no land like this in India,” says Karmjeet Sekhon, project manager for what is expected to be one of Africa’s largest farms. “There you are lucky to get 1% of organic matter in the soil. Here it is more than 5%. We don’t need fertiliser or herbicides. There is absolutely nothing that will not grow on it.”
It is really sad to forgo such a great resource for that cheap. It should have been much better if they had tried to sell bonds for this kind of project run by the Govt or local investors instead of transferring it to the foreign body.
this Meles boy does not know shame when he lies to the world. The only thing I suggest is either pray Egziabher~waaqaa or we must act as a people with dignity. We have had enough of talking. I say to everman and woman and act repossess your country. Ok! Talking takes us no where.
England, the architect of Ethiopian Ethnic federalism knew it all along what is buried under Ogaden and Benshangul soil. The gold or oil ” discovery” helps these regions get recognition and protection. It is not without reason that Gambela and Ogaden come to UN radar screen in recent years.
Because we are busy killing and trashing each other, others are coming to enjoy the fruits of our land.
In order to be independent, we have to have a know how to use our minds and our mines. I think we may have both but we do not know how to use them for our benefits. Our resources are going to go unchecked and shipped out and smuggled right under our noses.
I absolutely blame the intellectuals for this disastrous situation of the country in the 21st century. We kept derailing what has been built and bankrupting the coming generation. Our generation has been bankrupting itself for more than half a century now. The saddest thing that is difficult to imagine is ; the intellectual in any group is the most vulnerable part of our society materially as well as spiritually. Deadly poor and paupers.
If a country imprisons and brutalize its intellectual there will not be any progress in the country. A country with out well developed middle class cannot go anywhere. That is true story of the Ethiopian Empire. Egyptians are well skilled and they could cheat us technologically in intelligence as well as mining. We did it to ourselves. Thanks to Mengistu and kudos to Meles.
The writing on the wall of Cairo International Air Port says, “ If you think that you are smart and try to cheat Egyptians, do not even try it we will sell you thrice without you realizing what had taken place.”
I think Egyptians are doing that to Ethiopians right now.
the enviromental costs of minning gold is enormous. An awful volume of cyanide is poured on the site poisoning the surounding, erasing the habitat…it is a ruinous enterprise to mine gold environmentally
Most probably the international organizations which have signed the Kyoto Agreement and The Copenhagen agreement may help ameliorate the destructions of our environment in Gambela and Borana. Also the Industrial Giant Alamoudin could help in reducing the environmental destructions in his gold mines in Adola. That is just to a good will action by his organization; I am asking.
The government of Ethiopia should start implementing the Kyoto Agreement right at the center of Addis Ababa by trying to cut the pollution of the Great City, Addis Ababa. Black carbon emission that comes out of thousands of old cars must be abated as soon as possible.
The Mayor of Addis Ababa should take this issue to its hand. Even Doctor Erimias Dangen from Chemistry Department in Art Kilo was trying to save children who were attending classes behind Gomaa Kuteba. Yet his is an individual Chemist who understood the problems before any body long time ago. We have to consult our Scientists and Chemists to help us out in reducing carbon emission and hazardous materials that come out from factories, cars and mining sectors. I salute our Environmental and physical Scientists such as Doctor Ermias Dangne from Addis Ababa University. “Beautiful minds.”
We have to start from home grown solution and resolve our basic problems while looking for a broader systemic solutions. Also the case at Koka tannery should not be looked over and it must be addressed immediately by converting it to an environmental friendly business. The international and local governments including the investing firm should look at it very immediately. There are modern technologies that could help stopping the pollution of the Koka Lake. One primary thing is the government policies must be enacted by the national parliament as soon as possible . Ethiopia needs Environmental Protection Agency now. For sure the City manager of Addis Ababa must look at this mater immediately. Ask and talk to any pharmacist in the city; he will tell you the effects of the pollution to his customers. He is a good human gauge to see the effects of car carbon emission in the city. It is a very serious problem. People are drinking the polluted waters from Addis Ababa all the way to Adama, Wonji and Matehara as well as other polluted towns. Be ware my fellow Ethiopians, when development and mining come to the country there are tangentially hooked problems that should be addressed immediately in any sector of our society. Transportation is an example that tells us all; we do not need to read books just walk around Addis Ababa and wipe your nostrils you can see the black soot entry your lungs in massive amount. Or just look at the piles of old tires every where in the country. That is chocking national problem while killing people one by one and devastating our environment in general.
Do not trust Meles how he is ready to fight Egypt. It is a lie. Personally he doesn’t care. What he means is that, any development in the area of the Nile will involve Egypt and Woyane that is what he meant when he said “Ethiopia has the right for the dam project on Nile” It is whole scam. In fact, he will allow Egyptian to occupy Ethiopia to protect Nile. Egyptians will attack anyone resisting about Egypt’s occupation. Meles needs Egypt because the area where Nile is Amara land and the Amaras will resist through tooth and nail. He knows that. Therefore, for Meles it is will be easier for him if Egypt takes care of this resistance without him spending a penny.
I am not politician and ordinary man. I live in Ethiopia. I see the problem we are in. Criticizing bad things good and acceptable. But what I do not understand is points that we, people, agree on. I see different sites everywhere it seems that we have nothing in common. No body thinks about Ethiopia and its poors but everybody go for satisfying his/her ego.
we have to be able to say what is good is good and what is bad is bad consciously with logic not hatred.
From what I see on blogs and different comments on different articles, I know many people could insult me instead of taking what I said in to consideration. But, please do not do that I just wrote what I think. Take time before giving any unnecessary.
