From 24th of July the 8th annual conference would open in Toronto and would continue until 27the of July. The theme selected for the theme is “”Ethiopian Muslims’ Challenges and Opportunities“

Ethiopia has contributed alot for Islam since its birth throughout history. This contribution has not been recognized for many generations and centuries. The reason is that many of its citizens, includiong Muslims have not been taught effectively about their Islamic identity and they are lacking historical background on the Islamic link to their country. Even at this moment a few people know that the majority of the Ethiopian pupolation are Muslims. This year’s theme has been selected to commemorate our Islamic history and learn more.
We felt that it’s a historical obligation for us to maintain and protect our Islamic history!
There are prominent Muslim scholars, historians and many other activists who would deliver their speech at the conference The participants are from all the continents, with some guests from Ethiopia and the number is expected to be in thousands. Mufti Sh. Omer, Mufti Sh. SIraj, Prof. Husein Ahmed, Dr Lapiso D. are some among many (check the list ).
It is our wish and prayer that the convention succeeds .It succeeds so that it would be a door of opportunity for the Ethiopian Muslims to get into a new era. An era which ends the abuse, ensure equity and justice.
Ethiopian Muslims are facing daunting challenges and this makes the duty of the organization also challenging. As long as it succeeded in gathering all the stake holders under one roof, it is half way through. Now it is time to use this opportunity. Every minute should have a unique value to address the challenges, and bring up the opportunities it made a theme.
To be specific, the speeches and the discussion should be in the context of the objective of the organization and the reality of Ethiopian Muslims. Muslimｖscholars should bring Islamic way of breakthrough of how to overcome the challenges . Muslims scholars should give Ethiopian context, and one example might be of the challenges that Ethiopian Muslim students are facing. They are facing a hard choice, which is apparently between their religion and academy. Nothing is new about this tactic as previous regimes alienated the Muslims in their own system. The outcome is uneducated, backward Muslim regions with no political power what so ever, and we are paying the price today. Therefore, Muslims scholars should give a wider context to the issue and examine the short and long run impact in their search for Islamic solution. This is just a typical example of the iceberg, and it holds true for the historians as well as other activists.
Perhaps it is too late and too little to write this as the conference is about to start. Yet, we should acknowledge Badr`s effort to arrange this great conference with limited sources.
We should expect a real change once every Ethiopian Muslim feels that he/she has a role to play in the ongoing effort. It should not be a kind of “Badr should do this and that” rather “we should do this and that” we are the organizations and the organization is us, and none can go forward without the other.

I hope this Muslim gathering and organization are not yet another front for Ethiopia’s ruling Woyyanne regime to divide and rule. I caution my Muslim brothers not to be political tools.

i think Elias does not write about pure politics rather human right abuses in Ethiopia agianst Islams. As it is the organization is very limited in its reperesentation. Like any other Ethiopian organization it is dominated by people from certain regions. They lack the experince and knowledge to comprehensively speak for the whole muslims of that country.That is why it does not have the recognition one would expect from organization that is supposed to represnt a huge portion fo a population. Muslims are great people not in Ethiopia only but all over the world. What makes them great is their deep rooted and well grounded faith to the one God. Ethiopian Muslims are the victim of Christian Rulers, if not Christian People because the rulers are declare hidden or open war against them. Recently 4-5 Muslim students has been suspended and expelled from Mekele University for praying in school campus. 1. The conference should address the atrocities committed against Muslims in Ethiopia, like Ogaden and Oromia and Benishangul. Indeed it should address the attroicities committed by Ethiopian government against other Muslim country-Somalia.
2. They should ask CIA and the Ethiopian government that why the statstics of Ethiopian Muslims changed this year, if they really aware of that. The CIA country profile used to suggest that Ethiopia is about 45% Muslim which tied with Christian population. Recently, it has changed to 30% Muslim.
3. They should ask the Ethiopian government that why the Western media started to declare Ethiopia as the “Christian Nation?” especially since the war against Somalia started. They should come out on the Western media and explain the situation of the country.

We Ethiopians must take a pride in our ability to live together peacefully regardless of our religious and ethnic diversities. We know, Muslims are the majority in Ethiopia. A few years back the Ethiopian dictator was seen on Ethiopian TV saying that Muslims account for 65 percent of Ethiopian population. Despite this fact, Ethiopian Muslims do not hold any significant position in his gov’t and are not protesting for recognition. In other countries, minority request affirmative actions or equal employment opportunity. Forget about all the justified rights that Ethiopian Muslims can demand, even Muslims students are denied the simplest right which is to worship the one almighty God at there schools in their free time. Keeping in mind, each prayer takes about two minutes and could be performed in any place. Muslims pray five times a day and each prayer has a set time. It is not possible to postpone the prayers from the set times except under special conditions such when a person is on a travel status. The question is why is the Weyane juntas are preventing Ethiopian students to practice their religion at schools/universities during their free times. Schools and universities in Britain, Canada, U.S. and other western countries provide the required facilities to accommodate minority Muslims while Ethiopians are denied in their country and in the schools their parents help build by their tax money. Probably Weyane is doing this to create religious war in Ethiopia in order to extend its life.

Among other fundamental issues, this conference should address the following critical and burning issues affecting Muslims in Ethiopia and Somalia:
1. The genocide in Ogaden
2. The massacre in Oromia
3. The killings in Benishagu Gumuz
4. The genocide in Somalia
If these issues are not addressed immediately, and appropriate resolutions passed, the conference would be a futile exercise and just a nominal gathering to make some individuals happy. Furthermore, the murderes and killers of Woyane should not be seen at the conference(for example the Woyane diplomats and pro Woyane groups and individuals . The Woyane is the enemy of Muslims.
I hope the Muslim community will raise the major human rights disrespect issues including killing of innocents by weyane everyday, famine that comes due to weyane bad governacne, lack of democracy in ethipia, monopolization of economy by weyane and other buring issues that weyane have created on to our people. How do you determine the percentage? Is it by number of leaders who are/are not muslims? or registered members are listed by their religion? it is wrong. Hi guys, these mumbers are for me nothing. It doesn’t matter who is the majority as I am Christian I have lived with people with different relegions in peace without any problems. The problem is using numbers in ethnic based politics, there you manipulate them to get more budget.If they seem to cause problems, it is better to remove the questions on ethnicity and relegion from the census if they seem to cause distrust and conflict among Ethiopians and focus on age, education, health and other more important ones.
One more thing , it is better to refer the source to base our arguments. At least Jemal told us his sources. I encourage others to show us your sources. I don’t believe you unless you provide these sources.
It is a big weakness and unprofessional to categorize people who speak based on evidence to be Woyane or other to divert the attention of people from the point of discussion.
I wish best luck for my Ethiopian Muslim brothers and sisters. We are all the same and all of us no matter what kind of religion we have what we need is mutual equality respect and dignity that is free of oppresion.
History tells us that rulers use their divide and rule methods inorder to weaken the whole population. We should not be fooled and support any oppression whether it is for our Tigre, oromo or Amhara people etc.
Together let us be one any object any form of oppression.
