Ethiopian Review reader Ato Ayele Tena Kassa has translated the controversial article by Irish columnist Kevin Myers as follows.

I have read the commentary by Kevin Meyers you posted on July 11th — Africa is giving nothing to anyone — apart from AIDS). I have found it very important that it should also be read in Amharic by your readers. I think this helps us understand how degrading and shameful it is to live on hand out given by Westerners.

አፍሪካ ለዓለም ያበረከተችው ነገር ኤድስን ብቻ ነው


በ ኬቭን ሜየርስ (አይሪሽ ኢንዲፐንደንት ኒውስ)

አይሆንም ሊጠቅምም አይችልም::የአፍሪካ ሃገሮች ዝንባብዌ ላይ ስልጣኔን የተከተለ እርምጃ ለመውሰድ እያንገራገሩ ባሉበት ባሁኑ ወቅት ኢትዮጵያ የለማኝ አቁማዳዋን ወደ ምእራባውያን ማዞር ጀምራለች:: አሁንም እንደ አምና እንደገና:: ዝነኛው ቦብ ጌልዶፍ ከ25 ዓመት በፊት “ዓለምን እንመግብ” በሚል የበጎ አድራጎት እንቅስቃሴን ከጀመረ ጀምሮ የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ ቁጥር ከ33.5 ሚሊየን ወደ 78 ሚሊየን አድጎዋል::

ታዲያ ለምን ሲባል ነው ይህንን አስደንጋጭ የህዝብ ቁጥር እድገት ለማበረታታት ድጋፍና ዕርዳታ የማደርገው ? በምንስ ምክኒያት ?ምንም ዓይነት አሳማኝ ምክኒያት ሊኖር አይችልም:: እርግጠኛ መሆን ካስፈለገ ምክኒያታዊነት ሊሰራ የማይችልበትን ሁለት ነገሮች ልግለፅ::

አንደኛው የእኔ ምናባዊ አስተሳሰብ ሲሆን ሁለተኛው ደግሞ የታረዙና የተራቡ ሰዎች ምስል ነው ያው እንደክርሞው አይኑ የፈጠጠ የተራበ ህጻን ዛሬም እንደገና በካሜራ የተቀረጸ ስቃይና ሰቆቃ::

እንደ አብዛኞቻችሁ ሳይሆን እኔ ኢትዮጵያን ጎብኝቻለሁ እንደ አብዛኞቻችሁ ሁሉ የበጎ አድራጎት ድርጅቶች ጠኔን ለማስታገስ የሚያደርጉትን ጥረት አይቻለሁ:: ከሃያ ዓመት በፊት በረሃብ አይኑ ፈጦ ከሞት ያዳነው ህጻን ዛሬ አድጎ ክላሽንኮቭ አንጋች ሆኖ ልቡ እንደፈቀደው ህፃናትንና አዋቂን ገዳይ ጨካኝ ሆኖ አግኝተነዋል:: ካለምንም ጥርጥር ይህንን ፍጹም እርባና ቢስ ነፍሰ በላ የኢኮኖሚ የማህበረሰብና የቤተሰብ ምጣኔ ስርዓት ለማቆየት መከራከሪያ ሊኖር ይችል ይሆናል:: ለእኔ ግን ግልፅ አይደለም በሌላ አመለካክት ይህንን የመሰለ ሂስ ያዘለ ፅሁፍ ላለማቅረብ ምክንያቶች ሊኖሩ ይችላሉ::
አንደኛው ምክኒያት ጠላት እንጂ ብዙም ወዳጅ ሊያተርፍ አይችልም እንዲያውም ከሁሉም በላይ አውቃለሁ ባዮችን ቁጣ የሚቀሰቅስ ነው:: ከዚያም አልፎ በሽሙጥና በግብረገብ የበላይነት የሚያምነው የአየርላንዶችን የኑሮ ዘይቤና ክርክርን የሚመርዝ ሆኖ ምናልባትም በአየርላንድ በጣም የማደንቃቸው እንደ ጆን ኦሺ እና የፈኑካን ወንደማማቾችን የመሰሉ የታወቁ ምሁራንን የሚያስቆጣ ሊሆን ይችል ይሆናል ነገር ግን ቢሆንም ይሁን::

ግን እባካችሁ እናንት ቁጡ ሁሉን አውቃለሁ ባዮች ከዚህ በፊት በአየርላንድ ስለነበረው ረሃብ በሰነፍ ማወዳረሪያ መነፅር አንዳንድ ነጥቦች እንዳነሳ ፍቀዱልኝ::ከዚህ በፊት አየርላንድ ውስጥ በተፈጠረ የረሃብ አደጋ በ20 ዓመት ውስጥ የአየርላንድ ህዝብ ብዛት በ30 ከመቶ በማሽቆልቆል ሲቀንስ በተመሳሳይ ወቅት ግን የምዕራባውያን ምግብ ልገሳ ባለአስር ጎማ ማርሰዲስ ጭነት መኪና እና ሎክሂድ ሄርኩለስ አውሮፕላን ምስጋና ይግባቸውና የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ በእጥፍ ሊያድግ ችሎዋል::

እንግዲህ ያሳያችሁ ! ይህች የችጋር አገር ከእነ እብደትዋ ብቻዋን እንዳትመስላችሁ እዚያው አካባቢ ከቅስተዳመናው ባሻገር ሶማሊያ የምትባል የጽንፈኞች ክላሽንኮቭ አንጋቢ ጫት ቃሚ ለስራ የሰነፉ እባጮች ይገኛሉ::

በእርግጥ ከሞላ ጎደል አሁን በሚሊዮን የሚቆጠሩ ጥቅማቸው ለመራባት ብቻ የሆነ መናጢዎች ነፍሳቸውን ማቆየት የቻሉት በምእራቡ ዓለም እርዳታ ስላለ ብቻ ነው::

ይህ ራስን የአለመቻል በሽታ ደግሞ ጥሩ የሆነ የእድገት ፖሊሲ ወይም ፖለቲካዊ አስተዳደር ለመመስረት በውስጣቸውን ማነሳሳት አልቻለም:: እንዲያውም መሃይምነት የሚያመጣው አጉል አምልኮ እድገት እንዲያሻቅብና ከነጭራሹም ይባስ ብሎ የሚቀጥሉት የደቡብ አፍሪካ እጩ ፕሬዝደንትን ከባንባ የሚገኝ የውሃ ጠብታ ሰዎች ብልት ላይ ቢደረግ የነቀርሳ መከላከያ ይሆናል የሚል ተረት ተረት ጠንካራ አማኝ እስከመሆን አድርሶዋቸዋል:: ይህንንም እንተወውና ድህነት ረሃብና የማህበረሰብ መላሸቅ በኤርትራ ኡጋንዳ ኮንጎ ሱዳን ሶማሊያና ኢትዮጵያ የሚደረገውን የመናጢዎች እርስ በርስ ጦርነት ሊገታ አልቻለም::

አንድ ሰዓሊ ልክ በሰፋፊ ብሩሽ አስቀያሚ ደማቅ ቀለም እንደሚጠቀም ሁሉ ታሪክም የብዙ ሃገራትን የአናኑዋር ስዕል ድብልቅልቁን አውጥቶ አጥርቶታል::ከእነዚህም ሃገሮች ውስጥ ጃፓን ቻይና ሩስያ ደቡብ ኮሪያ ቨትናም ፖላንድ እና ጀርመን በ20ኛው ምእተ ዓመት ዛሬ በአፍሪካ ያልታየ ከዚያም የባሰ ስቃይና መከራ አሳልፈዋል:: እነዚህ ሃገራት ናቸው ዛሬ በተዘዋዋሪ መንገድ ለአፍሪካ ዕርዳታ እየሰጡ ወይም አፍሪካ ውስጥ ኢንቨስት እያደረጉ ያሉት::

አፍሪካ ግን ከለም መሬቶችዋና የተፈጥሮ ሃብት ለማንም ልትተርፍ ወይም ልትለግስ አልቻለችም ለአለም የሰጠችውም አንድ ነገር ቢኖር ኤድስን ብቻ ነው::

ይህ በእንዲህ እንዳለ አፍሪካ የተፈጥሮ ሃብትዋን እያባከነች አስደንጋጭ የአካባቢና የተፈጥሮ ውድመት እያደረገች ነው::

በ 2050 የአኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ 177 ሚሊዮን ይደርሳል ይህም ማለት የፈረንሳይ የጀርመንና የቤንሉክስ ህዝብ አንድ ላይ ተደምሮ ማለት ነው:: ይህች ሃገር በታላቁ የአፍሪካ ስምጥ ሸለቆ ደረቅና ብዙ የማያመርት ቦታ ላይ ትገኛለች::

ስለዚህ ይህንን በሕዝብ ብዛት የተጨናነቀና ያካባቢ ተፈጥሮ ሃብቱን ያወደመ የኢኮኖሚ ተመጽዋች ሃገር መርዳት ምንስ ፋይዳ ይኖረዋል ?
ዛሬ አንድ ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ የሚገኝ ረሃብተኛ ሕጻንን ታድገን ወይም አድነን በቀጣይ አመታት ለዘላለማዊ ድህነት ጦርነት የወሲብ መደፈር አመፅና ጭካኔ ካበቃነው እና እንደገና በአዋቂነት ዘመኑ የራሱን አይነት ግማሽ ደርዘን ጐስቃላ ህፃናትን የሚያበረክት ከሆነ እንደዚህ ያሉትን ሰዎችን ለማዳን ምን ያክል የሞራል ግዴታ ሊኖረን ይገባል ?

በእርግጥ ውስጣዊ ሕሊናችን ጥሩ እንዲሰማን የምናደርገው ሊሆን ይችላል::የዚህ ሁሉ ችሮታም ዋና ምክኒያት ይህ የሚሰማን ስሜት ሊሆን ይችላል:: ነገር ግን ይህም በቂ አይደለም::

በአፍሪካ ለራስ ጥቅም ሲባል የሚደረግ ችሮታ አፍሪካ ላይ ከወረደው እርገማን አንዱ እንጂ ሌላ ሊሆን አልቻለም:: ይህ አይነት ቸርነትና ልገሳ ሕይወት ሊሰጥ የቻለው ካለዕርዳታው ዕድሜ ሊኖራቸው የማይችሉትን እርባና ቢስ የፖለቲካ ስርዓቶችን ብቻ ነው:: የዚህም አይነት እርዳታና ልገሳ የኢትዮጵያንና የኤርትራን ጦርነት ለአስር አመት አካባቢ ከማራዘም ሌላ የፈየደው ነገር የለም::

በታዋቂው ቢልየነር ቢል ጌትስ የተቀየሰው የወባ በሽታን መከላከል መርሃ ግብርን ስናየው በጣም አነሳሳሽና ገንቢ ሃሳብ ቢሆንም ቅሉ በሌላ በኩል ካየነው ደግሞ የግል ዲሲፕሊን (ወሲብን በተመለከተ) ጨርሶ በጠፋበት ዓለም ይህ በሽታ የህዝብ ብዛትን ዕድገት ለመቆጣጠር በጣም ውጤታማ የሆነና አሁን በስራ ላይ ያለ ብቸኛው አማራጭ ነው::

ይህ የቢል ጌትስ መርሓ ግብር ከተሳካ በሚሊዮን የሚቆጠሩ ህጻናት በጨቅላ ዕድሜ ከመቀጠፍ ይድናሉ በማለት በጉራ ይናገራሉ:: በጣም ጥሩ ግን ከዚያስ? ሁሉም ወደ እኛው ወደ ምእራቡ ዓለም ይምጡ? አዎ ይህም አንድ ሃሳብ ነው::

    I read your opinion on the AIDS for Ethiopia. Your knowledge of International political economy must be very limited or you are just one of those hypocrat blood suckers. First of all do you know that there is a purposeful mission by your people to keep Africa down because your insecurity has convinced you that the only way your living standard can be maintained is only by keeping Africans and the rest of the developing world down so that you can dump your products on us. You are the worst polluters of the enviroment. How dare you blame Africans you blood sucker. You have systematically degraded the continent for over a century. Do you know how many times Italy invaded Ethiopia and sloughtered and poisoned thousands. During these times, do you know how the other Europeans collaborated with Italy. Well what goes around comes around, like king Haileselassie told the Europeans at the U.N., Germany occupied most of these hypocrats. Shame on you, you are trying to hide the fact that Congo was looted treasures worth 100 billion dollars by it colonizer, Belgium. I can tell you so much till you get sickened and vomit. You are as diry as you forefathers. You are trying to make a journalism career out of the suffering of the poor by hiding the real causes of the problem. You are suggesting that prolonging the life of this child is asking for more aid and perpetuating the poverty; therefore, AIDS should be stopped. No the hypocrats like you wouldn’t like the idea because that mechanism of perpetuating the problem is the best way to implement modern slavery and colony on the Africans.     On the contrary, the comment of Tizibt,#6 really was an embarassing. We’re beggars and he dont need to give excuses for that. Simply take it.
    The problem to the hunger is not the Irish man, but lackig ‘good governance’- fight for that if you’ve the guts.

    Let us see if Kurra’s so called chewanet is going to get African or Ethiopia the sympathy of the west. Like Mr. Mayers, Kurra seems to lack the understanding of the culprits to our degredation. I would have recommended so many books that were written by the cocasians themselves, books that would enlighten you about the systematic manipulation which are designed to keep us the way we are no matter what we do. For starter I recommend to you “The economic hit man”. If there are any countries that have grown, they are countries that are willing to compromise their culture or countries like Kenya where foreigners are the real beneficiaries of the economy or countries that are willing to sell their freedom. Not only are the systematic dominance done by governments but also by so called international institutions. Dont be embarassed, I am not a white hater. I have so many white friends. Actually I do have better friends in whites. The point is, do you see the net around you. You cant go any where. The fisher man has put you in the net. South Korea was allowed to grow, find a book and read. When they dont allow it, yous sister will be slave in the middle east. Your brother will die of aids, your mom will never see her kids and your dad will be in jail for voicing his opininio. He said that the slave owner family should tell their things for a year, after that the slaves themselves will keep telling each other the same things for the next 400years. Some of the things that he told them are, divide them, tell them that the brown is better than the black, kinky hair, fair hair, smart, fool, dammy etc. So KURRA you should change your comment name to “white mans echo”

    Thank you for translating the article. Ethiopians need to read the article. Despite Kevin Myers’s insensitivity and exaggeration, the responsibility of feeding Ethiopians is solely a responsibility of the Ethiopia government and productive adult population. I have made my protest heard to Irish Independent but after reading the Ethiopian Foreign Minster reply, I began to see Kevin in different light. May be he is right, it is disgraceful that one of a fertile land and blessed country has to push the begging bowl to the others. Our elits and rulers spend money on tanks, silk ties, 4×4 land crousers and peace keeping forces of other countries while our people die of starvation. it is only feeding their own people is a responsibility of other countries. This is more hypocracy than Kevin’s article. The following is an article I wrote few weeks ago, when I heard about famine.

    It is the generation that failed Ethiopians.

  14. We should all understand the back ground of the article written by this white trash. No body has claimed that the government of Ethiopia, the Ethiopian elite, anyone above 18 years old, or Elias kifle has no responsibility to tackle the povery our great people are facing. The issue is, do you really understand the foundation of our misery or are convinced by the japanese or white writers who claim that we have low IQ. Do you believe that just because we dont rape and murder 2years olds like in the advanced world we are back wards. You better believe it, what ever kind of leaders or activist we have they will make us eat them alive. They will make sure that we stay where we are because we allow it. I did watch a good movie a while back and the name of the movie is “Apocalypto”, and there I heard one of the actors say “A civilization cannot be destroyed from the outside until it is destroyed from the inside”. My point is not to cover our idiocy but to make sure we know we have a group that is very dangerous or equivalent to the real HIV disease that we need to know it is deadly.

  15. I agree 100%. Truth hurts!!! He probably could have used softer words. But I personally do not see any wrong with the central message of the article.

    Guys, the Ethiopian poverty is much more than that. We have 78 million hungry people now. There is no need encouraging these people to make another 78 million hungry folks.
