Mayor-Elect of Addis Ababa and leader of the newly formed Ginbot 7 Movement, Dr Berhanu Nega, testified yesterday at the European Union parliamentary hearing on the current political crisis in Ethiopia.
The hearing in Brussels, Belgium, was organized by Member of European Parliament Ana Gomez, and attended by members of EU’s Human Rights and Development committees.
Several Ethiopians and representatives of the International Crisis Group (ICG) have also attended the hearing.
Meles Zenawi’s regime was represented by the lobby firm DLA Piper, not by the ambassador to EU Berhanu Gebrekristos.
“I am from a lobby firm DLA Piper. I have a question to you and Ms Ana Gomes. Why don’t you fight the government in Ethiopia, like Professor Mesfin does, than from Diaspora?” the lobbyist asked.
“We have never seen you in any of our sessions before,” the U.K. Labor Party spokesperson and Co-President of the African, Caribbean and Pacific/EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, Glenys Kinnock, said to the DLA Piper lobbyist.
Glenys pointed out the recent Human Rights Watch report that criticizes the EU executives for being silent on the crimes against humanity committed by Meles Zenawi’s regime in Ethiopia.
“In Portugal, we also had the same brutal dictator as that of Meles Zenawi,” Ana Gomes responded to the lobbyist. “We fought it both from inside and out side.”
As a chief European election observer mission, Ms. Anna had witnessed that Kinijit leaders won the 2005 elections. “Berhanu would have been in power. But the regime put him in jail.” Ana said.
“You are doing everything you can to kill HR 2003. You make money by defending a corrupt and criminal regime at the expense of millions of the Ethiopian poor,” Dr. Berhanu told the lobbyist for DLA that is being paid $50,000 per month by Meles.

Dear Dr. Berhanu,
Thank you for exposing Meles lobbyists’ propensities to hurt the Ethiopian people by defending Dictator Meles Zenawi to stay in power and that they are being paid $50,000 a month by Meles Zenawi from the Ethiopian tax payers’ money. This money could have fed hundreds of hungry Ethiopian children, but Meles has preferred to use this Ethiopian money for his own political survival to feeding Ethiopian children. No Ethiopian ruler has ever paid money for lobbyists to stay in power as far as I know the Ethiopian history; this evil man, Meles Zenawi is exceptional. He defends his evil actions by bribing foreigners and avoids conflict by selling Ethiopian land, and tries to solve the Badme’ problem by appealing to the Nigerian government. Every day, we are learning his deceptions, lies, and theft, but finally, with help of the Almighty God, we will destroy him for ever.
For those who has hope of change by opposition parties within Ethiopia. Let me explain.
The sleathy lobbyist say, “I am from a lobby firm DLA Piper” This is the lowest any government can get. It shows total disrepect to the people of Ethiopia. They don’t have the guts to confront the reality. They pay millions for lobbyist for nothing when people are starving. They could have sent one TPLF tug for the same result.
Secondly, they said, “I have a question to you and Ms Ana Gomes. Why don’t you fight the government in Ethiopia, like Professor Mesfin does, than from Diaspora?” the lobbyist asked”.
Do you not that means, they cant make it any clearer than this. Come home and let us break your spine so you cant function. “Afegne bebelah”. I bet they have plan for DR. Birhanu, like the Zimbabwe opposition, They have the same book like Meles. They want to criple him with false accusation and intimidations when he gets to Addis..TPLF knows it well the next natural step or reasonable option for Ginbot 7 is. Ginbot 7 going to Asmara is what we want to see. No one wants TPLF go down moe than the Eritrean Gov. These is very important time. TPLF and Al Almoudin are on desperate state and we need to be vigilant and stand behind Ginbot 7. They will use any trick to get him go to Addis and castrate him. Wow…Dr. Birish….I wish I was beside you right at this moment…I just finished reading your eight paper hearing to the EU…wow it was very wonderful that shows very clearly the weyane regime in terms of its social, civil, economical and others majors damages and crimes. The main point that should be underlined from Dr. Birhanu’s
statment, I think, is this is a battle that can win by Ethipians and Ethiopians alone. Instead of blaming the western gov’ts, who have no agenda in our country as long as their interest is fulfilled even by a gov’t brutal against its people, we should start asking ourselves what to contribute, Like G-7 commented above. Those of us, who have been biting our nails for years after witnessing the life and freedom which citizens of the countries we happned to live enjoying, know that it worth contributing.
