Secretary General of Ethiopia’s major opposition party, the Coalition for Unity and Democracy Party (Kinijit), has resigned this week saying that he is unable to carry out his responsibilities because of the worsening political climate in the country.
Ato Muluneh told ER sources that as of this week he is a private citizens and that he will not be involved in any type of political activity in Ethiopia until the political repression by the ruling Tigrean People Liberation Front (Woyanne) stops.
A few months ago, Woyanne has forced Kinijit to change its name in order to ‘legally’ operate in Ethiopia. Woyanne also gave the name “Kinijit” to an individual named Ayele Chamiso, a low-ranking former staff member of the party to humiliate the leaders and millions of Kinijit supporters. As a favor, the Meles regime, in collaboration with the American embassy, allowed all family members of Ayele Chamiso, including his wife, two children, a brother and others, to settle in Washington DC as political refugees, even though they have not been persecuted in Ethiopia. The American embassy in Addis Ababa may have thus violated the U.S. laws by knowingly collaborating in fabricating claims of persecution by Woyanne and Ayele Chamiso. Ethiopian Review has also gathered reliable information that Ayele Chamiso is asking and receiving thousands of dollars from Ethiopian families in the U.S. who want to bring their relatives to the U.S. claiming that he can help them get U.S. visa. Ethiopian Review is willing to share this information, including evidences of bank transactions, with the U.S. law enforcement officials.
Ayele Chamiso currently also receives a 4,000-birr monthly salary and is given a large house free of rent in Addis Ababa.
This is just one evidence of how the American embassy in Addis Ababa is an active player in the corruption of Ethiopian politics.
Back to Kinijit …
After the Kinijit leaders have complied with the demand by the Meles regime to change their party’s name, the election board, which is controlled by Meles, has continued to ignore their request for legal status, effectively blocking them from engaging in any type of political activity in the country.
The only thing for Kinijit, which is now named Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ), left to do is to stop all their political activities in the country after formally announcing that they are reclaiming their original name — Kinijit.
It is expected that other high-level officials of Kinijit-UDJ will follow Ato Muluneh’s lead and quit in protest in the next few days.
Meanwhile, Kinijit-UDJ leader Birtukan Mideksa has decided to travel to the U.S. next month to consult with her supporters in the Diaspora. It is not clear yet who among the top leadership will join her in the trip.

Is it just me or do you guys feel, as I do, the Weyanes can do whatever they wanted to trounce the Ethiopians? I mean is anybody doing anything about it? Are we going to be just wishful thinkers? Can we all prioritize our needs? Like Elias said on that TV show the other day, are we going to quibble about none issues are we going to work for the overthrow of these mercenary killers? Yes, it is easy to blame everything on Shaebia, but Shaebia is the only organization, to my knowledge, that has been consistent with its willing to work with the Ethiopian people and their respective armed opposition groups. But, while Shaebia’s moves are something to be appreciated, it is up to all of us to take the initiative and to follow it through with some zeal and determination to help establish a sensible power structure in Ethiopia which is accountable to no one but the Ethiopian people!
Hay Guys!!!!!! what is going on yes in ethopia everything is closed for free democratic movement the soultion is gun by gun they take the power on that way ,so We have to organize and fight him together “UNITY IS POWER” at what time we keep quiet!!!!!! “ONE ETHIOPIA ONE PEOPLE” WE will sure we win , like the “HARMIWOE” People in GONDER !!!!!!! this is the time wayane is in danger DO it every body!!!!!!!
Mr Muluneh Eyoel has suffered so much under TPLF tyranny. Despite his personal decission to quit from being part of UDJ, he will be remembered as a strong young man who challenged Woyane at the crucial historical moment in Ethiopia.
This is a very sad news, but I respect Mr. Muluneh’s decission.
Wish you the best
I think a nation gets the kind of leadership that it deserves. Ethiopians have for too long ignored the enormous sacrafices that a few individuals have made to lay the foundation for democracy & development in this deeply troubled country of ours. In fact, even at the height of the 2005 election crisis, it was only the hopeless poor that came out and protested as they had nothing to fear. Thsi nation is simply not ready for change and TPLF could reign for many years to come.
Like ONLF, other Ethiopians need to engage the Woyanes in the battle field. There is no other alternative. Those who think otherwise are wasting time.
There are thousonds of x-soldiers in Ehioopia, the only thing they need is organization and funds.

Though I respect Eyoel’s decision, I do not think quitting is the best way to force Woyanne stop humilating our country in front of the World. Eyoel has handed the torch to the next man in line and it is our turn to pick it up. Let us come together and bring Woyanne down! It unity that makes the difference!
Ato Eyoel,
Quiting is not the solution.
The solution is to join Ginbot7 and bleed Weyane.
Hopefully, he is planning on how to join Ginbot7.
one answer only get organized and figth period.
My friends, don’t despair. It is going to take a lot of ups and downs before peace, democracy and stability comes to that unlucky country. More will die. More will suffer. At the end, however, we will be free. Eyoel gave it all. Even if he stayed on, chances are he wouldn’t bring the desired result in that country. Dictatorships don’t fall by peaceful means.
Ethiopians have to fight this evil in a way it will be effective. Forming a political organization and sitting in a fake parliament is not going to do it.
It is crysal clear that everything is closed for peaceful strugle in ethiopia.so what lets get together under G-7 and show them who we are.
What a sad story. I really don’t know what else we are waiting for? All the people whom we relied on to bring democratic change to our country are being scattered by the oppressive political climate in the country.
Let us now stop making unnecessary talks and take concrete action, those of us who can join the arms struggle should do so the rest could contribute in cash or in kind. Woyane is now urinating on our heads!!! The time is rife now!
Thank you Ethiopianreiew – you are the hero of the moment by writing to the authorities regarding the weyane killing squad migrating to the US with millions of blood money sent here under the pretxt of political refugees but their main job is to under mine any anti melese orgainzation by creating false stories of being tortured and imprisoned – I hope they will not bring you to their fold by sending one of their gang memebers offering you $$$$$$$$$ to shut up
Time to organize and fight is now. We need to provide our consistent support for a Democratic Organization to save our country Ethiopia.
