Berhanu Nega aims to lead a movement for change
Addis Ababa Mayor-Elect Dr Berhanu Nega and colleagues will give a press conference today, Wednesday, to announce the formation of a new political movement. The press conference will be held in the afternoon (4:00 PM Washington DC time) at the Ethiopian Television Network’s studio in Alexandria, Virginia — a suburb of Washington DC.
The announcement — which is planned to coincide with the 3rd anniversary of the May 15, 2005 elections — has created a great deal of interest in Ethiopian communities around the world. It is currently a subject of much discussion by almost every Ethiopian who follows Ethiopian politics closely. It is not without a reason. Since he was released from prison last July, Dr Berhanu has become the most articulate and forceful voice in demanding the end of Woyanne’s illigitimate rule. His uncompromising stand on respecting the choice the people of Ethiopia made on May 15, 2005, has positioned him as a leading opposition figure. While his colleagues in the Coalition for Unity and Democracy Party (Kinijit) chose to continue working within the system inside the country, Dr Berhanu has reached a different conclusion: we have seen the extreme savagery and lawlessness of the Woyanne regime and that the people of Ethiopia have the right to use any means necessary and available to them to protect themselves from the regime’s atrocities.
Dr Berhanu is joined by some highly experienced and smart individuals such as Ato Andargachew Tsige, Ato Mesfin Aman, Ato Daniel Assefa and others who are expected to make up the core of the new movement’s leadership.
According to sources close to the group, talks have already started with the Oromo Liberation Front and other major Ethiopian opposition forces to establish a politico-military alliance against the Woyanne junta. The talks could and is hopped to lead to a transitional government in exile.
The press conference will be carried live via Ethiopian Review Radio Network, Current Affairs Discussion Forum, and other media tomorrow, Wednesday, starting at 4:00 PM.

Dr. Berhanu can follow a path which he thinks is correct to emancipate Ethiopians from the mercenaries who are in power now. However, this decision of him didn’t come after he was released from jail. Some three years ago when he and his former colleagues thought that they can bring change in Ethiopia thru a non-violent way, they tried one of the methods – ELECTION. The land slide victory that kinijit had secured proved this without doubt that Ethiopians are ready for change. But this was not what the thieves in power expected to happen. When they saw the reality coming to them with unprecedented effects, they hunt down all those who were involved with Kinijit in the election. For those of us who read Dr. Berhanu’s book – yenetsanet goh siqed – the idea of following a method of struggle other than non-violence is not something that just came up at this time. If we are able to read between lines, it seems that he has already been convinced by these other means of pursuing the struggle right after the election. I think it’d been better if he told us what he decided now months ago when he came to the US. As I said earlier the methods and strategies of struggle that he and his colleagues are going to tag on are respectable but I think it is a no-brainer to believe that he first refused to go back to Ethiopia because he got scholarship and second he came up to this idea after he has done some soul searching and studied about it for months in the “mountains of Pennsylvania”.
May the resurrection of Ethiopia “ye ethiopiya tinsaE” be soon.

Hummmm I wonder what he has in mind, if it is armed struggle I will sign up.
Since long time, there is a single question constantly asking me to find an answer, which is, I couldn’t with my thinking as a normal human being.
The question is clear and we all know.
All woyane gangs are all along pretending elected by Tigrians. But in the national level no one has elected them to become a prime minister, a foreign, security or at any keep ministerial and important position to hold positions.. Yet, this self appointed criminals Tigry representatives landlocked the oldest country always was known with her seacoast. This self appointed criminals have committed countless crimes against the very interest of the nation. We all know about and it is written perfectly as it happened in the history book in order the next generations will know the truth about our nation is facing at this point by those represented Tigry.
This few criminals represented Tigry are ruining our nation including with the very basic elements of existence as they did with the seacoast, the war with Eritrea and now they are in a secret Ethiopian territory trading with the Sudan, which is the worst crime any citizen can do to any nation.
The question is then,
What are thinking/doing Ethiopians With Tigry origin when woyanes elected by them are committing countless and damaging crimes time after time and occasion after occasion against the nation allying with neighbouring countries? Are all Tigrians are the same woyanes do towards the nation, which was not the nature of Ethiopians with Tigry origin? Are mothers in Tigry not any more blessed to give birth like those the past heroes but they are all cursed to give birth to evils like those in the TPLF? I can’t say meles because his evil mother is an Eritrean who gave birth a curse like him.
If I didn’t witness in reality, I even couldn’t imagine for a second Ethiopians with Tigry origin would accept if any one landlocked their country including a foreign enemy. But the one landlocked their ancient country is became one of them and he is getting limitless support, appreciation, backing, voice and any thing he like from them for long time for his work against the country. They might think they are doing the right thing. But to me they are not themselves anymore. They have already lost their pride, honesty, justice, humanity, respect and value. They are in a very serious problem. It is a big Shame and disgrace including those from Diaspora.
If this party was created somewhere in Ethiopia – it would have make sense. But creating a poltical party which will be focused on issues of Ethiopia – right here in North America – would not make any sense at all.

We neither have time nor the luxury to be pessimistic. Time is not on our side. What we need is people with vision. And after reading so many interviews given by Dr. Berhanu Nega, I believe he is the kind of person Ethiopia has been waiting for. A person with vision. I also believe Ethiopia’s problem will not be solved by one person that is why I like his and his group approach. They are willing to sit down with various groups such as: OLF, ONLF to iron out our differences and work out for the common goal. So people if you have nothing to offer, stop discouraging others who are committed to do something positive instead of standing by the fence like most of us do.

For woyanne what we call peaceful struggle is a peace of cake putting it under control. Peaceful struggle in most cases doesn’t work and it will also not working in the future, everybody knows that. I don’t know what Dr Behanu’s annoucment is going to be. I think he is the right person to resist woyanne thugs. People are in full moral now to fight and they don’t even need sophisticated army machinery to overthrow the woyanne mercenary thugs. I AM READY!!
Of course, Wayanne does not leave peacefully before selling out the country totally. They will leave when they prove there is no Ethiopin in the world.

As much as I applaud the courage of Dr. Berhanu, I am disheartened by some of the comments, now please some of my Ethiopian brothers think for a minute and don’t late your irrational hatered govern your emotions. First and foremost anyone who has a dream of re-occupying Eritrea is not looking to free the people of Ethiopian but repeat the disasterous policies of successive Ethiopian governments since Hatzei Yohannes. Ethiopian is not made of for one ethnic group, you will have to learn to live with the rest of Ethiopians who will have equal right as the Amhara and Tigrawot who dominated power for almost 200 years. The time for power entitlement has passed.
Now to the issue at hand, as we can see Woyanne is brutal servant regime who can’t stay in power for one night without the support of their masters, they are losing in Somalia and the Somali people will set their people free in the near future. Woyanne can’t rul Ogaden and Oromia and is only staying in power through brutal repression and pitting people on tribal grounds. What Ethiopians need is UNITY above all without being dominated by anyone who feels entitled to political power, that time is past and there will be no freedom without unity and equality of all Ethiopian citizens. Eritrea is willing to help the Ethiopian people assert themselves, be partners in peace and prosperity among us and the greater horn of Africa. Time to sober up, think clearly and also understand that once you decided to fight the Woyanne regime it is not going to be a cake walk, there will be sacrifices and even temporary setbacks, what is required is steadfastness and know what your goals are and fight until those goals are reached.
I vehemently support the downfall of Woyane by any means preferably by means that take less human lives and time. So do not misunderstand me for my comments.
I would like to see the out come of their effort to bring the opposing forces together. Dr. Brihanu is brilliant but I do not know if he is using it sincerely for his country. As you may remember he dedicated his book for ‘Esiye…’ rather than the 200 or more people died during the election in the streets of AA and else where. The contents focus more on him rather than the process that we would like to know. As professor Mesfin put it, he might have written it to talk about himself.
We have now different types of parties, who are national, ethnic based as well as parties that are determined to use arms and that oppose armed struggle. We may need to create a mechanism by which these parties struggle together for a common goal rather than creating new party, unless the creator is always wanting to be number one.
If one says I am always right and, therefore, only my leadership is the right leadership, unwilling to compromise, then I think our country (our peoples) will not benefit.
Thus, I want to see what Dr. Brihanu is now up to.
I am 100% agree with Dr. Brehanu’s and his friends approaches is the only way to throw away weyane. Please people of Ethiopia let us unite and throw wayane once and for all. If we have differences we can discuss our differences by round table discussion., but first let weyane be out of the picture.
The programs should be transmitted directly to ethiopia via satelite TV to bring real change! Just too much talk in the diaspora not enough. So many anti weyane ethiopians in the diaspora cant realize atleast a satelite program?

Eritrawi, I agree with your thoughtful statements. But, I am afraid, the Ethiopians who write in most Ethiopian forums, seem to be governed by their emotions rather than their mind. I believe Elias is smart enough to realize that the unshakable friendship between Eritrea and Ethiopia is a prerequisite to continue the strong bond that exists through common history, heritage and culture. The Ethiopian Internet message posters need to understand that fact, as we say “from the bottom of their heart”. Otherwise I do not see any hope of achieving our mutual interest if they keep on following the expansionist mentality that three Ethiopian regimes in the recent past could not achieve. They have to understand, the Eritrean people have fought through thick and thin by themselves with no Ethiopian people’s help (Not those poor peasants, but those educated Ethiopians that could have helped). But, the Eritreans decided to let bygones be bygones and elected to work with the Ethiopians. But, reading many of the Ethiopian websites especially the ones “Sympathetic to Weyane” or what I call some “vengeful” Agames, one is led to believe that most of them do not have a clue about how much Eritrea means well to Ethiopia and the Ethiopian people. But, I hope they will wake up and smell the coffee and differentiate that nether Isaias nor ShaEbia is their enemy. The real enemy is brutally ruling over their people.

Personally, I believe Kenyans have brought more political change in their country within a month than we Ethiopians have achieved in 18 years. Weyane is a Nazi group that believes in violence and it can ONLY be removed by military means. If we don’t employ concerted armed struggle to remove this vampire Weyane, we are making ourselves laughing stokes for our enemies and friends alike. Nonviolent means is never practicable with this violent fascist junta!

The woyane ethno-fasist must leave ethiopia or face their fate. Not only they have to leave our mother land but also leave get back the resources they have pillaged in the last 17 years. This noble cause can only be accomplished only by the language the ethno-fascists communicate and understand – a protracted armed struggle.
