NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A leading human rights group on Tuesday accused Ethiopian Woyanne troops in Somalia of killing civilians and committing atrocities, including slitting people’s throats, gouging out eyes and gang-raping women.
In a new report, Amnesty International detailed chilling witness accounts of indiscriminate killings in the Horn of Africa country and called on the international community to stop the bloodshed.
Ethiopia’s government Woyanne said the report was unbalanced and “categorically wrong.”
The London-based rights group said testimony it received suggested all parties to Somalia’s conflict have committed war crimes. But it singled out Ethiopian Woyanne troops, who are in the country to back Somalia’s U.N.-sponsored government, for some of the worst violations.
The rights group said it obtained scores of reports of killings by Ethiopian Woyanne troops that Somalis have described as “slaughtering like goats.” In one case, “a young child’s throat was slit by Ethiopian soldiers in front of the child’s mother,” the report says.
Ethiopia’s Woyanne Information Minister Berhanu Hailu said the report was “totally unfounded.”
“Normally when they report they do not balance it out. They have to go and see the reality for themselves. They shouldn’t report from abroad saying this is happening,” he told The Associated Press in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.

These attrocities are commited by the tribalist woyanes and not the peace loving Ethiopians. Through out our history no sane Ethiopian has ever slit enemy’s throat like the woyanes are doing now. They are commiting war crimes and will be held accountable when the day comes. Their supporters will not be spared when the ‘ gorf yametachew gosegnoch’ run for cover. But It needs to be known that this is not the Ethiopia we know and Love. It is the work of the tribal mercenaries ruling Ethiopia by force. And they are managing to stay in power not because they are strong and powerful but the misguided US policy towards the country is baby sitting them. But it won’t be long before we see them running for their lives. Ethiopians are as peace loving as ever.
Mr Minister Berhanu Hailu you can talk like this when you are addressing media and human rights organizations which have their fancy offices somewhere really far from where your crazy army, ill-disciplined, blood thirty and throat-slitters are committing crimes against unarmed Somalia civilians. but what can you say to Somalians who are the ones experiencing these atrocities on daily basis. atrocities like indiscriminate bombardment, rape, illegal killings and cutting the throats of their captives are the norm rather than once-in-while incidents. look at us, we are human beings, we do not our own government which care about us and when we need our voices heard. tell your army to stop acting like a bunch of criminal gangs and instead of always denying these allegations why do not you investigate and see it for yourself. this throat cutting thing has even being happening in ogaden region for years and nobody bothered to investigate the authenticity of these reports. your government is living in a cocoon of lies and you will therefore never see right from wrong. you will never be able to correct your mistakes, until its too late.
Somalis would appreciate if you decide to get out of Somalia and continue your killing spree somewhere else, most probably in Ogaden, Orama and Amhara regions. i am sure that is what is going to happen, if you are not stopped now.
