Mistreatment of Ethiopian Airlines hostesses

  1. Thanks Getachew!
i share with your ideas.i am not here to criticize but to share what i felt.
some of the hostesses really lack respect for their customer. i happened to travel fro and to Addis ababa by the Ethiopian and Lufthansa on different space of time. In my Ethiopian Airlines experience, most of the travelers were foreigners with transit at Addis or somewhere else. The flights were delayed on average more than hour. The hostesses were supposed to ask an apology for all the inconvenience created due to the delay, instead some of staffs were really angry on those passengers asking the right reason for the delay. As an Ethiopian citizen i was ashamed of their act because i felt that the airline belongs to us and represents our national identity. They should know that a customer is more than a king and paid for the service too.Customers need service with passion and smile.

I strongly believe that anybody who is doing something will do mistakes.i will look forward for the Ethiopian airlines hostesses to admit their past mistakes and make it right in the future .

    Yes we can!

  3. Self-respect:

my dear friends as we know the tradition that we have been proud of some times brought us down and therefore, it is unfair that you acuse this waiteress. It is imarative that we look at the case, tradition, and culture. what if here boss did not alow her to say sorry for the dealy/

  4. Ethiopian airlines is the best airlines in Africa. For your information our flight attendants are the best. There could be some flight attendants that gives a bad image but very few.It happens every where. All most all of them are polite and courtious. Some passengers specially from America I am talking about Ethiopians are very rude and demanding. They want to be treated like celebrities. As a matter of fact some of them they don’t even deserve any kind of treatment.None of the flight attendents of any airline are better than ours.Sala you are so ignorant. They are not waitress they are flight attendents. If you are not happy with their service don’t ever fly with th famous Ethiopian Airlines.

  5. What you talking about by saying what if her boss did not allow her to say sorry tor the delay? That’s the lamest excuse i have ever heard from someone. It’s business unless you don’t know how to take care of your customers they won’t come back. Ethiopian hostesses they think they have the best job in da world. I mean they have a good job comparing to other Ethiopians in Ethiopia. They were seen as a queen in Ethiopia just becuse they serve food on airplane. So my point is their head is gased and they need to stop acting stupid. I like the way they treat kids thought……they r the best at that!!!! cuz i seen them giving toys and staff for little kids.

  6. Unless those hostesses understand what their job is correctly, they will always act unmannerly. Most hostesses think that they have the best job and looked down on other Ethiopians or Africans.

I would like to tell those women the truth: thet they are like a bar-lady, who serves food in restaurants. The only diferrence is that they are doing it in a plane, a very uncomfortable place to be in

  7. 6 & 7 -agreed on your point- they must accept their mistake and treat the customers in a very well mannered approach. I think these days specially on this famous EAL..have seen disguste situation ,lack of curteousy…please this must avoid and do your job properly.. You are serving people in a plane and you are not doing any scentific anylises or you are not doing any technical things just serving food on the plane..BEKA I agree one thing this is proffession, but it is not a big deal and it is not the best job of others.

guys..don’t be pride! we know…you are doing all type …!!! so please respect your country/respect all people…OF COURSE NOT ALL….Please do your job properly.

  8. I have been flying Ethiopian for the last ten years. Throught my experiences, all of the crew members and flight attendants are one of the best in the industry. I am certain that these proffesionals are under-paid and overworked. May God bless them, keep’em safe from those whose daily job is nothing but tarnishing the images of these hard working people.

  9. Well, think this issue of service could be further explored outside just the Airlines industry in Ethiopia. In general, there’s just a lack of customer service. Have you gone to an Ethiopian resturant in America and received a mediocre service? It seems as if many ethiopians see going to work as doing the customer an extra favor and Ethiopian airlines employees are a prime example. They’re sincere on a favoritism basis and they need to be retrained and redeployed.

  10. I usually use to travel to home with Ethiopian air lines and to be honest, I didn’t see any big problem from the host or hostesses. they are helpful and respectful. I don’t really understand how some customers want to be treated or served. they (the passengers) acting on the host and hostesses like they are coming to ethiopia from any other planet and thinking they need extra care. extra care for what??? most of us we know each other those who lives in the US,how we live and work. so, don’t need extra more treatment for nothing. In my opinion, they serve very well and also we need to know that they are human beings and we human beings are not perfect at all things. But, I saw a problem on Ethiopian air lines on the ground (counter agents or customer carers). most of them are really stupids and are not helpful. anyone can see very easily how they gave a priority and help to their family, friends and or friend and family frends.even when you ask them for help, they are not will to help you or talk to you as a customer server manner. instead, they try to ask to help for some girls who didn’t ask for help. I had these experiances on my trips to and from ethiopia in washington DC air port from this experiance I can mention those people by name.

  11. Yes, the arrogance of the employees in Ethiopian airlines never went unnoticed not only by loyal customers, by casual travelers too.

Passengers have already witnessed the gradual deterrioration of the quality of the service furnished by Ethiopian Airlines as a sign and proof of the recless mismanagement of the authorities.

In a lawless regime the guiding principle of doing business is, doing busines by intimidation just like leading people by coersion.

Soon, the impact of being rude and careless on travellers will definitely affect Ethiopian Airlines very, very negatively.

  12. I share the writers concerns and it really makes me sad to know the unchecked abuse of power whether at the ethiopian airlines or other organizations in ethiopia. I think this article begs for a general approach in thinking about and possibly working toward alleviating the oppression that our people and particularly young females experience daily. What are we prepared to do about the abuses. as a starter, lets think about the basic and common issue of the millions of young girls hired as “gered” in one of your relative’s homes in ethiopia. we all know the heavy burden of work not to mention the insults and beatings. add to this the current issues of “zeregnanet” burning in our land and we have a sad future. may god bring mercy to our land and its people.

  13. I was looking at Tamagne show last week he had interview with Tadele Yednekachew. The son of His excelency Ato Yednekachew Tesema.Tamagne asked him to give explanation on some people complaint that Ato Yednekacew used to favor Ato Mengistu worku and some other complaints too.Tadele answered Ethiopians love to complian even when there is nothing to complain.(Ye Negadras Tesema dem)my point is there are few flight attendants who are not doing their job well but most of them are trying their best.Dick Gregory the American comadian who travels all over the world admire our flight hostess and many more. God Bless EAL!

  14. Dear Fellow readers, the last 15 years (about 5 to 6 times) I went back home by Ethiopian Air Lines, to be honest, I did notice some (very few arrogant employes) with kind of attitude (I have a great job…), all in all even when I flew back home to Dire Dawa I had a good impression of Ethiopian Air Lines, again to be Honest, I will start with the wright attitube (I will say Please… Can I have this or that & with sugar coated Thank you for this or that) Trust me I am not brown nozing here, I will do to American or United air line service personnel, why not to my Fellow Ethiopian, you know how long you are going to be with this hosteses from DC to Addis (about 20 some hours) they will treat you with respect and dignity on your next need or request(the trick is first treat others the way you want to be treated….any time….any place)

    Anonymous replies:

i know it been long since you wrote the comment but i had to say something ,i used to work for ET years back and i say you have got the magic word thank you . Treat others the way you like to be treated .

  15. “There is nothing that properly functions in the USSR. not even hanging” once joked a totally disgruntled person just to show the degree of his frustration. In much the same way, I had already enough as to what is being done to crush, milk, suck etc Ethiopia and Ethiopians. Have any thing positive you know of Woyanne right now in Ethiopia. That sort of thing is what constitues NEWS about Ethiopia for me these days. Bekka!!

  16. During my last trip to Ethiopia, I have seen how hard the EAL crew work and they deserve praise. The bosses need some training of the golden rule ” Treat others the way you want others to treat you”

    BOB replies:

I agree with you AA. I flew from DC to Addis on EAL in October 2011(my first flight with EAL) although I do have considerable flight experience with other international carriers. My first EAL experience was totally positive; the cabin crew were courteous, overly helpful and professional in all their dealings with me. Generally speaking, I would rate them among the best compared to other carriers. I also know that anyone can have a bad day and also that customers can be overly demanding with their expectations! It is my opinion that EAL staff are providing a great service. Some comments I read here comparing flight cabin crew to simple food waitresses in the air is very unfair. I know that their duties, responsibilities and training are primarily focused on much more than simple foor service. To all EAL crew members I offer my sincere appreciations and encourage you to keep up the great work!!!!!

  17. Well, it is really difficult to judge the whole flying crew for some bad experience.

As in any day to day business this boys and girls are facing different sort of people. Especially as one of your buddy Ewnet No. 5 said, some Ethioian travellers from USA watch too many movies and expect a lot.

Ethiopian Airlines is one prime example that we Africans can run a successful business without any glitch. In today’s day and age when Airlines like Alitalia and Swiss Air run into difficulties where the competition is very high, our Airline is running smoothly. This is mainly because of the service we receive from all flight crews including the ones you guys are bombarding (Air Hostess). There might be a time when one could face a bad experience which I also had one or two, but most of the time when I see the hard work this girls face day to day and manage to give an excellent service, they should be praised not criticise in general.

  18. Let’s not take the neutral role here. The statement of getting bad service reflects for most ethiopian airlines hostesses. Incase some people don’t understand what most means, it is said 50% or more. Obvioulsy, that means not All(100%) are giving bad service. However, the bottom line is there is an issue when most(50%) of the air hostesses are giving lausy service & spend a majority of their time shopping in D.C and the plane is delayed waiting for them to board. That by the way is one of my experiences & the hostesses were actually upset for having to be on time. How ironic is that? Needless to say, please stop giving excuses for bad service. We are not riding the greyhound for $25, this flight actually costs $1500. So why shouldn’t anyone not request for good service? Lastly, if you really explore this issue it goes deep into the low expectations that many Ethiopians(blacks) have in general. This is why some continue to support terrible businesses that treat them bad. Ex. Going to ethiopian resturants with bad service, blacks buying hair product from racist chinese beauty shops etc….The bottom line is as a nation (ethiopians) we need to have higher expection or we’ll continue to be a mediocre poor, hungry, war torn country.

  19. Those Ethiopians and foreign travellers who used Ethiopian Airlines before the coming of the crimefamilies into Ethiopia have been expressing profound and wide aprreciation and excellent customer services provided to them by the professional and well cultivated Employees of the Ethiopian Airlines; and all customers had a lasting memory of the best in Ethiopian Airlines. Well, not anymore. Isn’t it sad?

Nearly every customers who travelled by Ethiopian Airlines have been complaining about the unprofessional approach of the airline’s hostesses towards the travellers to the point where respect is nonexistant at all. Customers deserve 100% respect and good services. Again,Not anymore; isn’t this sad?

For the amount of huge money that the customers are paying, there should and must be available the followings:

    Respect for the travellers.
    Eye-to-Eye contact with customers.
Show real smile not fake one.
    Equal treatment of customers.
Understanding of the needs of the customers.
Not engaging in dispute or in arguments with customers.
develop Proper communication skill to assess the needs and wants of travellers.
    Proper bodylanguage not flirtation.

F.Y.I Customers are always right and are the one who determines the quality.

  20. It is about costumer service whether on land or on flight

I do not have with the male Flight attendants they are decent. FEMALE hostesses think
    1) They are beautiful
    2) Rich, as they travel abroad they have access to cosmetics and fashion

    However,
    a) They are not humble and lack curtsey
    b) They also lack confidence. If somebody talks to them, they think he is on sight love and try to avoid eye contact. And think an Ethiopian traveler is poor or it is his first flight.

  21. Hello my people of the beutiful land.
I’m so glade i got a chance to say something about ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES FLIGHT ATTENDANT (just to sugar code their title)LOL but to make the long story short i flew from DC to ETHIOPIA last february 2007 in 13 years so i heard a lot of negative feed backs about Ethiopian Airline services my friends were telling me take this airline take that airline but i refuse to spend my money to any airline but my own which is Ethiopian Airline. so the experience that i had was i don’t even have a word to discribe it how bad it was they were very rude they had all their stuff on some of empty seats all of the crew except the piolot and offcourse the co-piolot well atleast not to my knowledge all of the servers were ver very rude (mens and womens)there was an older men on the flight that i remember he asked the servers if they can remove their stuff off the seats so he can take a nap they refuse to do so very disapponiting i onestly want to know what happened the elderly respect and the culture that we had i don’t give a shit if they fly an airplain or a space shuttle those are the type of people makes you feel that you’re not from the same country sad very sad unfortunatly true and bytheway EWNET please leave up to your name let them learn from their mistakes maybe you’re one of them or you know someone in the crew. if it wasn’t for the customers that fly Ethiopian Airline we would not have our airlines in business by know so please respect the passengers and be kind and as the Ethiopian culture always has been.the bottom line i’m not flying this airline anymore i’m not going to pay to be disrespected or mistreated

  22. I am one of the few passangers who use to fly on ethiopian air lines way before I start to live in the united states. What a wondrful services we had from flight attendants;very hard brief when I compair with todays flight attendants.I think it is out of ignorance or misinformation our flight attendants attitude is strictly arrogant or their uncalculated over confidence. When comparing Today’s flight attendants with the old once they are way behind in hosting their customers.Probably this mistake arised from selecting this crew in a tradition that the ethiopian air lines had it before. This is not the only problem our air line faces today; the frakfurt station workers in particular at the most the station manager has an attitude when treating passangers rudly. Ican tell the whole story what happened to me in 2006.my email address is dibu [email protected]

  23. What is lacking is a motto “Costumer is a King”
Every client should be treated properly. I do not think the Ethiopian Air Lines has a proper training method they need to revise the curriculum such as Flight safety, First aid, costumer treatment, behavior of people on flight etc.
There are no or few hostess in domestic flights because people see them as Baristas? Or they are employed to seduce the foreigner. They should not be selected based on their beauty or knowledge of French language. Most are employed through relatives. Once they are employed they start contraband work shopping in Europe selling in Addis Ababa from cosmetics to medicine. Competition should be should be open to public. When they are alone and inactive all their talk is about love. I suggest also if the interior of the air plane feels Ethiopian, example wear Ethiopian cloth, Ethiopian trays, Ethiopian food, and seat covers Ethiopian cloths.
    Is the lion still there?

  24. In the last fifteen years I flew on Ethiopian Airlines for about 12 times. Besides here in The US, I use all the airlines including Delta, American, Alaskan, United, Continental and Southwest. From my experience, Ethiopian Airlines is one of the best in safety, security and service comparing to the top airlineses I have known. Be proud of yourself and your country. Do not exaggerate slite mistakes of a few. If you write direct to the Airlines about your dissatifaction on your trip specifically, it will be corrected and we all grow together. Be civilized…..

  25. Here in town i know a lot of EAL FLIGHT ATTENDANTS and most of them have some kind of problem, but they are the most innocent girls b/c always they are tired of this job b/c they work long hours and many problems so please lets not blem them b/c they are tired with the managment of EAL

  26. I will appreciates the male flight attendants. They work really hard with positive attitiud and smile. I think the male flight attendants are more fits for this job than the femals. So, Ethiopian Airline should hire more males than femals.
    Thank you.

  27. It’s hard to provide quality customer service if there is little incentive to work hard. If you make very little pay and there is no hope for you in the future why would customer service be important?

When I flew from Axum to Addis I arrived 20 mins. late to the airport. The baggage claim guy told me that I needed to speak to the manager to see if i’m “allowed” to take the flight. The check-in counter and the gate are literally beside each other and I still had 40 mins. to catch the flight. When I stepped into the managers office he asked me very sternly why I was late.
Confused I gave him my reason and he told me it wasn’t a good enough excuse…and that he doesn’t know if he’ll “let” me fly. I froze in absolute anger and frustration to these comments. As I stared in his face he told me that I should be saying “sorry” and apologizing for being late to the airport…only then could he “let” me fly. At this point, my blood was boiling as to how ASS BACKWARDS and F*CKED UP this whole situation was but I was able to calm myself down and NOT explode in his face. After a few grumbles and sighs he gave me my ticket and pointed to the gate where my plane would arrive.

So after all of that, I waited the 40 mins. at the gate, just like everyone else and boarded the plane.

The icing on the cake was when I handed the EAL hostess my ticket. I expected her to rip the stub off my ticket and hand back the detached part, instead she just literally yelled in the worst attitude “WHAT’S THE PROBLEM, DO YOU WANT SOMETHING? GO SIT!”

After that, I gave up and just wanted to get back to Addis. Maybe they were on a power trip because I was a firenji, but how absolutely sad and backwards it made them look.

  28. I flew Ethiopian Airlines last year and I would have mixed feelings as to service. On the international leg, London to Addis, I found the hostesses to be excellent. Admittedly this part of my journey was in business class. My experience was more mixed on four internal Africa flights I took, which were all economy class. My abiding memory is a hostess literally flinging a large bottle of water at a passenger, who had asked for a galss of water, with the words “self service”.

However I am totally happy to fly with Ethiopian Airlines again this year.

  29. You guys are correct. I had bad experience traveling from Finland to Addis. They behave indifferent. At least they respect men but you have no idea how much they are arrogant for women travelers.

the other amazing part is they give privileges to the white people, the moment they know that you speak the local language and are from Ethiopia it is finished, no respect.

Any way i am not gonna spent a single money and time to be treated in a such disrespectful way by the name of …..

  30. Let me tell you something. I did fly Ethiopian Airlines maybe 10 times. I think. the hostess are beautiful polite and professional and they are doing their best to pless everyone. Ethiopian cusomers are very rude and it is very clear for everyone that every time they go to their own places they want to treat everyone like a slave. Meaning, when they go to Ethiopian restautant they want to be treated like princess and prince. They have no manners. They become so demanding and rude when they fly with their own Airlines. They are the most complicated ignorant and inconsiderate, flusy, fresh and desrespectufl passengers. They try to dress modern but, yet when it comes to treating servers with respect, they are in the 16 century. They need to learn a lot. They do say, thank you and please and I am sorry to non-Ethiopians but, when it comes to their own people they are something else. I really can not finish talking in these forum how difficult Ethiopians are as client. Wherever they go they are inconsiderate people. The sad thing is there are some good Ethiopians, very polite and civil but, the behavior of the majority rude Ethiopians wash them away. Ethiopian customers needs to be trained too.
