The supreme council of the Coalition for Unity and Democracy Party (Kinijit) chose a new name today: “Unity for Justice and Democracy” (አንድነት ለለፍትህና ዴሞክራሲ).
Kinijit was forced to take this action today after the Woyanne-controlled Electoral Board of Ethiopia arbitrarily gave the name to an individual named Ayele Chamiso in order to derail Kinijit’s movement in Ethiopia.
The executive committee will resubmit its registration application with the new name to the election board tomorrow, Monday.
Starting Tuesday, the party’s high-level delegation with travel to Gonder and several other cities to consult the change of name other matters with supporters.

Very good step!! Go forward. I am really surprised about Oromos like Adee Birtukan and Prof Al-mariyam doing such pan Ethiopian job! Oromos are the hope and the future of Ethiopia. We just need to accomodate democrats from Abyssinia and Southerners! UDJ does have my full support!!!

It is good that they abondoned both controversial terms: FREEDOM and UNITY, which are already contaminated by the intention of radical “separatists” and “unitarist chauvinists” respectively. If they had chosen freedom without mentioning unity, one considers the party to be AFD oriented. If they had the term unity without considering the struggle for freedom, they could have been seen as the other face of AEUP-chauvinists. Their choice is well thought and smart. Bravo!!!
I have been strugling what name would be more appropriate since I am so use to KINIJIT.However, I allready love the new given name “Unity for Democracy and Justice” (አንድነት ለዴሞክራሲና ለፍትህ).

This is one big step forward in bringing democratic governance to our country. A qualitative acheivement in a short period of time. I salute Judge Birtukan, Dr. Hailu, Euel, Biruk, Ato Temesgen, Ato Mohammed etc for their determination and hard work.
I like the name too. My only worry is, when the party gets stronger, woyanes smmugle one person in to the party or buy one person (like Lidetu) and gave it the name to this factions. Even woyanes give it to a party of one person. So, could this be a long term solution? I doubt.
For those who question the new name …. the Council has stated and comfirmed that the kinijit manifesto is will be fully applied when the new name become in effect,… so not to worry. its only the NAME change and the Logo ofcourse…..

Some of us are contributing money to support Obama’s campaign, because we believed that he will oppose ethnic based political parties in Africa as well as in Ethiopia and will not support Meles’s regime. At least he didn’t take any money from lobbyists.
I’m also willing to contribute money to UDJ or whoever is struggling to bring democracy and justice in my country. I’m hopping spend the rest of my life in Ethiopia. I don’t want live in nursing home or somewhere without respect.
But we need strong party rules and secure internet/web page where we can pay and support the party without thinking and fear that somebody will spend our money irresponsibly. We need also elect our representatives and pay them salary ($40K – $100K). If we do not contribute money and pay salary to elected party members, we will have corruptions in the future as we have seen before.
Let us say we have about 100,000 volunteers who are willing to pay $10/month and this will give us about $1 Million. I think this is enough for at least 7 – 10 members (full time) to run office. We have to think this way to build strong party. If elected members are good, then they can get more contributors, if not, they will lose their position and “job” (if you call it – job). Contributors also have right to stop monthly payment at any time and protest against any person who is doing wrong and is not following party’s rule.
Elias: Please expand this idea with more strategies to achieve our common goal.
I think for coolness sake it’d be better if we call the new name “Unity for Democracy and Justice” as – UDAJ (like you daj) And in Amharic just “አንድነት”.

very good name indeed! My worry is this. Does the name resemble what is written on political program? Unity in diversity. Justice must be for all be as group and individual. Democracy must accommodate right of all nations and nationalities to rule themselves. Because Kinijit does not fulfill all the above criteria it does not deserve this name. To put democracy and justice to test look what is happening on this forum or web page to our poor humble comments. They are deleted if it is not about kinijit. How can we expect democracy from such people? How can we look to them for justice. With out these two in place, there is no way we claim to be united.

The name sounds good. Please make all party rules to capture all worst case cenarious. Even though we love each other so much at one point, we are also quick to be nasty as soon as something different popups and we start to pull out the mother of all dirty games from under the rug. We need to have party rules written for the long time to come. I think we have to spend more time on building the party from ground up. I know the Eth people believe in his educated elites and at the same time has been having bad experiences. The era of kinijit brought people together more than ever and people know what it can do at the election box too. TPLF will never win the heart and soul of the Eth people. Rest assured for that. They know that and the Eth people knows that. I have seen the TPLF stooges walking from house to house to hire the “hodam” of the society for the up coming election. Even the number of the “hodams” is dwindling. Take a deep breath and let us all do what we can. We have a long way to go.

After reading the call from the kinijit office on Addis Neger news paper, I was to suggest the name ” Democrasiawi Kinijit le Ethiopia Tinsae” I also agree with the new name because it clearly reflects the very objective of the party.

There is no option other than changing new name. Let’s not be so excited about the name change, as I see it from most comments. Let’s focus on the questions what exactly are the new strategies of the party to continue as a party in the struggle under the present bad circumstances? Most importantly there are two major bad situations, which are quite discernible: first Woyane is unashamedly seen closing every spot opening for democracy, and second the party is hugely and sadly divided. So, I am worrying about the trust and hope to support the party, to contribute money as well.

It was a great disappointment that the leaders of “kilijit” couldn’t work out their differences and revive the party. And the diaspora missed a great opportunity to mediate or even force the two factions to work out their problems. Instead the diaspora chose to quickly take sides and engage in an ugly mudslinging campaign.
But what the hell ?!! This may be a blessing in disguise , If they can not work together let each try it in its own way and fight for democracy instead of what ever they were fighting over.

Wonderful name !! am sure it will b nightmare to those who hates the words of democracy and justice. when the WOYANIES (the dedebs of dedebit) hear the word PFDJ (people’s front for democracy and justice) from ERITREA, wets on their pants. now they got it on their door step the much loved and respected kinjit becomes a giant UDJP. this is the beginning of the end of WEY YANIE .
I am happy to hear that.It is a slight change that has been made from the previous name. The main demand is for democracy. As long as the word democracy exists in the epithet there is no problem. The word democracy embraces all.
Despite anticipated problems from the brutal regime of Meles Zenawi all Ethiopians inside and outside the country should rally ourselves with the renewed party, the heralder of democracy in Ethiopia!

I haven’t heard in the world a party which changed its name by force or decree without willingness of its constituents.

I like the new name but it should say EUDJ (Ethiopians unity for justice and democracy). Ethiopiansm should always be forth in our plan so that we include all equally……
