I have known Girma years ago and he is the most talented classical pianist by any standard – be it Western, Eastern, Oriental or what have you. As far as I have seen him back home, every time he plays he never bring or take a look at his musical notes – ever!!
I wish I’d be around DC area to be part this show. For those of you who are in DC and its vicinity, attending this show will be an experience of a life time. Even if you don’t like classical music, you’d appreciate the talent of this proud Ethiopian fella.
About two years ago my brother in Ethiopia sent me, among other collections,a video recording of a classical concert held in Addis Ababa. This was a short but dazzling rendition of Mozart’s Turkish March by a young Ethiopian classical Pianist. Here was this folk dressed in Ethiopian costume playing the frolicking and elegant piece with such superb fluency and spontaneity. You could not help admiring him seeing how his swift hands merrily glided from one key to the other awakening such a delicacy and gaiety latent in that music.
I phoned my brother and asked who he was.My brother could not tell me much except that this guy was called Girma Yifrashewa and got his early musical training in Russia.
I said to myself a nice place to study classical music.A country with a great tradition of classical music and of great classical composers.A nice place to start with.
In the Ethiopian classical musical firmament,Girma is the new shining star!I definitely believe he has a very bright future. You and I will certainly HEAR a lot from him while performing at the hall of fame!
We were the same batch when we left Ethiopia to Bulgaria Sofia in 1987. He is a great guy too. You can read this link to know about his history. http://chevalierdesaintgeorges.homestead.com/Yifrashewa.html#3

Sorry for the wrong info.Girma got his music education not in Russia but at the Yared music school and later in Bulgaria-the country where the late Prof Ashenafi Kebede was also trained. The VOA interview was informative.Thanks. For those of you who want to know more about him,Girma has a webpage and you can savor the taste of his music there.
Folks,do celebrate this Ethiopian talent by attending his forthcoming concert. He is someone who can make us all proud.Wish him good luck for the future.
