ADDIS ABABA (AFP) — The World Bank has approved a 41-million dollar loan to finance electricity connection between neighbouring Ethiopia and Sudan, a statement said Friday.
The transmission line from the Ethiopian towns of Bahir-Dar and Metema to the Sudanese frontier to connect the countries’ grids will be funded by the bank’s International Development Association.
Only six percent of Ethiopia’s 77 million people have access to power, while just 22 percent of Sudanese have electricity.

I do not support woyane but why do you guys change everything to politics? Be consistent. This news has nothing with politics.
thats why they posted it,dude. wise shift of strategy on the part of ER
Aderajew, I am not sure what you mean by “change everything to politics” but I can tell you this. Einstein said “everything is connected to everything else”. You do not have to be very intelligent to understand the connection between politics and economy, especially in a country like ours where the government controls everything and use anything to stay in power. What the editorial pointed out is that Woyane will no doubt divert the money to finance war. Just look what is going on in Somalia, Ogaden, and the stalemate with Eritrea. Do you think Woyane cares about the economy? Hell no! It has shown in the past that it will use anything and everything to kill Ethiopians just to stay in power. Hence, I do not think the editorial is far fetched. Rather, what is mesmerizing is only 6% of our population having power [that is almost none] and Sudan, already 22%, is getting more from Woyane. Does than mean Ethiopian should sit content with just the 6%? Do we not need more? Sad!!!
Does it really make sense for the thinking brain that while only 5.74% of Ethiopians have access to electricity and while much more should be done to cover as much the regions and population with electricity, in the contrary, the current anti-Ethiopia regime is selling electricity to its friends in the sudan?
Electricity for the population is as much important as health care distribution for all. Why couldn’t woyanne crime family is always doing things in contrary to what the entire population asks for?
Since the crime family came into Ethiopia with no money in their pockets, but with a lot of bullets and guns and as well as ethnic division policy, they are riding on their own with no support from the overwhelming majority of Ethiopians, they keep on telling Ethiopians, “My way or highway.”
Ethiopians have been refusing to coercion and forcful rule since the crime family came to power with the barell of the guns. For sure, the crime family will soon pay the price and be ejected from Ethiopia.
I think Ethiopian review is wrong in writing that only 6% of Ethiopia’s society has access to electricity; please don’t mis inform us, we come to this site for fair and accurate info. I think if you guys engage in such misinformation compaign, you are no different from the regime in Addis which has the habit of misinforming us on a host of issues. According to the head of the Electric Power Corporation (EEPCO), Currently Ethiopia produces 800 megawatts of electricity from hydropower dams, reaching 19 percent of the population. Also, Ethiopia plans to have electricity available to the entire population by 2015. This is a good news to our people.
Dear aderajew (#1),
Aren’t u intellignet enough to understand what it meant to Ethiopians? DO u think all Ethiopians are politicians? DO u think that is why almost all Ethiopians are against Weyane? Ethiopians are fighting against bad and atrocious governance.. we are fightin against tyrany… we are saying that the leadership should be passed to those who desreve it.. to those who can bring practical change and prosperity to the nations ….. Many millions of Ethiopians are still living in dark and these corrupt and dictator leaders are selling our resources to the neighbour country.. does it give sense to u? think like this, ur father snatched a bread from ur moouth and gave it to somebody esle while u r on verge of death because of hunger….. We would agree ate least if Weyanes were investing the money obtained from electric sell to the cause of the nations.. But we know them quite well.
Dear Kalubicha Zerbkud,
While i share your argument that the current Ethiopian government stands againest its own citizen i want to comment on your argument which implictly criticize the move by the Government to export electricity to Sudan. and your reason to my understanding is not some thing related to lack of good governance, corruption or lust of power which are the characters of the Current Ethiopian government rather your reason is since only 6% Ethiopians have acesse to ELECTRICITY so there is no need to export it. Well your argument will not make sence becouse had Ethiopia had an elected government the income from exporting electricity to sudan would have help us to have some moent to provide electricity to at least another 6% Ethiopians. So please try to read about comparative advantage and i hope u will not change ur mind.
Thanks and victory to Ethiopia!!!
Don’t be naive guys. Whoever rules the country, Ethiopia needs money, at least in pieces, it trickles down to the poor and it is not them / the rulers who would feel the immediate quencequences at times of crises. So you like the lord go hungry, he would slaughter his neighbors cattle. so, i don’t prefer woyane be out of resources as they would be on our peoples neck if so.
That’s the extreme but please be updated and don’t refer to decade old statistics, who and when was it written 6%? And thanks to the friend who mentioned about comparative advantage….
yes, we can export electrical power to sudan in repelacement sudan must give oil
The idea of selling power to Sudan is not for the benefit of Ethiopia. Just think of the strategic importance of Sudan to the dying regime, Woyane. Woyane does everything possible for its survival. And this power export is part of the game but not a real business.
