Shawel Consulting, Hailu Shawel’s family business based in Addis Ababa, is one of the few thriving companies in Ethiopia that are successfully competing with Sebhat Nega’s EFFORT and Al Amoudi’s Midrock.
ER Research Unit in Addis Ababa has learned that recently, the Woyanne regime’s deputy prime minister, Addisu Legesse, has helped Hailu Shawel’s company, Shawel Consulting Firm, land a lucrative contract in the ‘Amhara Killil’ to upgrade Bahr Dar Airport.
Shawel’s Consulting Firm started to get lucrative government contract particularly since 2006, according to ER Research Unit.
Prior to 2006, the company and Hailu Shawel’s family were on a downward spiral financially, sources told ER Research Unit. Until the Summer of 2006, the Shawel family could not even keep up with the mortgage of their $600,000 house in Edina, Minnesota. Ato Hailu’s close family friend in Los Angeles, Ato Moges Brook, had to pay over $15,000 mortgage from Kinijit’s account that he and Shaleqa Yoseph Yazew control.

Recently, however, the family business is thriving. On top of the airport upgrade contract in the “Amhara Killil,” Hailu Shawel’s firm is currently working on another multimillion dollar construction project to build a large shopping mall. ER Research Unit is working to get more details and photos of this project.
Ato Hailu Shawel and Company have also been promised by Woyanne that they can freely operate in any part of Ethiopia and prepare for the next election as long as they do not use the name Kinijit. Ato Hailu has accepted the offer, but had to find a pretext to withdraw from Kinijit without causing himself and his group a public backlash. Before he departed for the U.S., he held meetings with former AEUP officials and created various committees that are assigned the task of reorganizing AEUP.
Asked by Kinijit officials Bertukan Mideksa and others why a bank account was opened under AEUP and the office rental contract was also renewed under AEUP, Ato Abayneh Berhanu and other colleagues of Hailu Shawel answered that Woyanne would not allow them to operate under Kinijit. When making such a decision, Ato Abayneh did not bother to consult with the Kinijit executive committee.
Currently, Ato Hailu Shawel and Company are busy preparing to participate in the upcoming local elections in April 2008 under the AEUP banner. Several teams have been dispatched to various woredas (districts) through out the country to re-open AEUP offices. Even the exiled Dr Taye Woldesemayat is returning to Ethiopia to help with preparations for the upcoming elections. He told Hailu Shawel’s supporters at the Paltalk’s Diaspora Room on Sunday that he is planning to go to Ethiopia soon.
All this is done by Hailu Shawel and gang while lying to the public that Kinijit is united. What these fools don’t know is that, after they help Woyanne destroy Kinijit, Woyanne will turn on them. Woyannes have promised themselves never again to allow the 2005 type of election where international observers will be present.
All Hailu Shawel’s corruption, business dealings with Addisu Legesse and other Woaynnes, reorganizing of AEUP, the campaign to dismantle Kinijit, etc. are not secret to Wzt. Bertukan and her friends. It is just that they are too timid to expose them. Wzt. Bertukan and crew are too nice to be politicians. Why don’t they open a book store and smile all day? Is hailu shawel not allowed to do business in Ethiopia? He can and we know that kinijit elects have their business or job they go to. What is special about him? Don’t you see that money is important for kinijit whether made individually or collectively? Don’t you know that those who have money are the ones who want change too? The national investor is seeking people who give him support. And this national investor speaks about the poor people too, because you can’t develop a country without alleviating poverty. Another point, you must know that taye woldesemait will go to Ethiopia to get back the seats which kinijit mistakenly refused to sit in after the election 2005. These seats if they manage to get them back will help them limit the movement by Birhanu and Birtukan. (Actually the latter are not interested in going for the election unless the 8 points are fulfilled. stupid strategy I call it). They want to push Birhanu and co aside. It also shows that this section of the opposition is the one that was willing to share power with EPRDF, whatever tirifrafi is given to them, not Birhanu Nega as was portrayed in recent past especially by taye and co. This you must have observed after 2005. There were sections who wanted to share power with the government. The call for National Unity government was the easy way to get to power, by dropping people’s demand for democracy and sleep with the enemy.
In 2005 Hailu Shawel was hoping to be the president by inciting people to protest and by boycotting parliament. It was naïve and a dangerous game too. Now he has become clever after 2 years in kaliti, the road to power is by cajoling with woyane. It means the anbessa mask hailu shawel wore is removed. He is after sharing power with the government by participating in election 2010 or if he can’t do that he does that by sharing contracts. He has chosen the simple and easy way of playing economics and politics. He is not Gorbachev or even Putin. He is just for himself and his small army of men.

Addis Ababa – The Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority has planned to equip the Bahr Dar, Mekelle and Dire Dawa airports to international airport standards.
The upgrades, which would take place during the current fiscal year, would include light systems for the runways and other traffic control systems. Airports would also be staffed with efficient manpower 24 hours a day.
The authority has reserved a budget of 250mn (about $28.6mn) for the airports and 20 other projects it envisaged to do this year.
The Siemens company supplied and installed various communications, navigation and facilitation equipments. It was not the first time Ethiopia has awarded projects of this nature to Siemens. It won one of the three tender in the 1.3bn birr ($148.6mn) expansion project of the Bole International Airport. Siemens installed the runway and apron lights of the Bole airport.
“The work to upgrade these airports is being done because the area is growing in terms of business and investment”, said Tassew Tekle, public relations head of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority.
Accordingly, the two consulting firms hired by the Amhara Regional state; DSA and Shawel consulting firms prepared the Amhara regions’ investment alternatives, project ideas, profile and preparation of 20 different feasibility studies.
One of the studies done by these firms was for the floriculture industry and all studies have been submitted to the regional investment agency.
According to the expert who was part of the study team: “The area which they identified around Debre Markos will make an ideal place for flower farming in terms of quality of soil, water and the elevation which makes it a very attractive place for flower farming.”
“They will start to invite investors who are interested in the floriculture industry as soon as the regional state’s council approves the study in the coming two months”, said Ato Habtamu Tsegaye, GM of the agency.
The Mekelle Airport has all the facilities needed, but still does not have scheduled international flights.
“With the floriculture investment potential so high in a 200m2 radius it will only be a matter of time before the airport welcomes international flights,” according to a senior official of the region.
The other major focus was on the Dire Dawa Airport as the city was the country’s eastern business hub, with a huge potential for the exportation of fruits, khat, livestock and a burgeoning tourism industry. -AND

Watch out before you start criticising Bertukan and her group. They should not do individual actions without the decision of Laelay Mikerbet. What we have to push them to do is not that they become rogue like Hailu Shawel but that they should speed up call for the Laelay Mikerbet to come together and make a decision to throw Hailu Shawel out. I know Woyane is doing its best not to let such a meeting take place. But they should find a way to do that whatever methods they use including a conference call of the Laealay Mikerbet people. Most of the money Hailu Shawel made was during the time he was the Ministry Of Agriculture and state owned farms. He stole in millions while over 15 million of Ethiopians where starved to death due to famine.

I just don’t get it. When it comes to African politics, virtue of the leaders is as important, if not more important, than the policies of those leaders. I hate to say this here, but I will say it as humbly as possible: “look at the leaders of Eritrea.” I know how negative many of you must feel about them but honestly, they are men/women of virtue. Did you know that after Isaias Afewerki became president he voluntarily took a paycut to express his commitment to live like the people? When ministers come to the countryside they are greeted with popcorn and cheers. Why? Because the leaders are virtuous and the people know it. No, they are not perfect, but they are clearly good people.
So, I say to all Ethiopians, look at the virtue of the leaders and not just their policies because at least you will know where their hearts lie. Was it really that hard to see that Hailu Shewal was a cruel man? He was ex-Dergue!
Anyone who is ethnocentric also needs to be removed from power. No ethnic group is greater than another.
Anyone who believes in taking Eritrea back by force is an idiot and will bring more suffering to both Eritreans and Ethiopians alike. A virtuous leader would never do this. They would be peace first. Modern Ethiopia has never seen a virtuous leader. Now is the time.

Some of your assertion about Issayas Afeworki is right. The guy is a honest person that is not corrupt. He lives a simple life. A friend of mine from Asmara once told me that he used to walk on the street and attend Asmara University classes with other students.
The same goes with Mengistu Hailemariam. He was not also corrupt.
However both Issayas and MEngistu are stubborns and cruel. Though they love their people, both are “ELLEHEGNOCH” and not wise.
That is why they are being screwed up and finnally end up extremely hated by the people.
That is why the “cholew” Meles who lives in the dark and drive the street in the night outsmarted them.
As to Hailu, he is worse than all of them. In three months he lost everything.
Now i understood him what he meant,when he said on the BBC hardtalk program that ”ethiopians are two faced people”.
Elias this time you came a little late . I wish we knew about this even as little as a few months ago. Had people suspected leave alone knew this guy and his AEUP opportunist group and the EPRP crooks were quietly plotting on how to trade Ethiopian youth’s blood for winnig weyane contracts and to get a few seats in the rubber stamp weyane pariament, Ethiopians both those who are fighting at home and in the diaspora frontlines, could have devised a better strategy on how to fight them by one hand while fighting weyane by the other. You are absolutley right Dr Berhanu group is too mellow and too soft in dealing with Hailu Shawl’s Mafia group AEUP was long known for its cozy bilateral relationship with weyanes . At various times Weyane used both Lidetu and Hailu Shawl to destroy Dr. Asrat’s party . Let face it ,the two trojan horses have nearly two decades long of hidden relation with weyane.
Elias, all readers of your article seem to be sycophants. They reflect your fabricted news, less dangerous than it seems to be. Most of it is a mere folktale.
Politics is, always, a means to protect economic interests by the instrument of policies. How one behaves in politics reflects the economic interest to which it stands for. ‘Woyanes’ interest to maintain superiority in political power emanates from its interest to make the ‘Woyane’ group the countries economic superpower. So, all policies are designed in a manner it can uplift the ‘Woyane’ group on the shoulder of the rest of Ethiopia. These days, in Ethiopia, you can not venture even in small scale cattle fattening business without a blessing from ‘Woyane’ family members and Shek Al-Amudhin. If you are not the family member you should have some kind of commitment to them. Otherwise, what they would allow you to invest on would be kind of high-risk-project that they are not interested on.
In fact, I do not see any wrong in Hailu running a business in Ethiopia. However, in light of the above fact, at the moment, any body who wants to run business in Ethiopia needs to choose silence in politics. It is not possible for a person to be a leader of strong successful opposition party like CUDP and at the same time run successful private business in Ethiopia. Therefore, there are only a couple of possible conditions for Hailu’s company to win a contract from the government of Ethiopia. Either he is committed/expected to offer some kind of political advantage to ‘Woyane’ or Woyane has felt that the project is of high risk and will lead Hailu’s company in to bankruptcy. Weakening ‘Kinijit’ could be among the many political advantages ‘Woyane’ can expect to gain from the contract offered to Hailu; and Elias has good reason to associate the issue of the contract with Hailu’s recently revealed harmful political behaviour.
