Guad Hailu Shawel’s ‘Yefiyel Wotete’

Web sites affiliated with Woyanne and the Iyasu Alemayehu faction of EPRP are reporting that the estranged chairman of Kinijit, Ato Hailu Shawel, has issued a decree suspending Wzt. Bertukan Mideksa and four other top Kinijit leaders. (Click here to listen)

Guad Hailu’s decree (issued from his mansion in Minnesota) was read first at an EPRP-linked paltalk room. Then instantly it was posted on Woyanne and EPRP web sites such as debteraw. A few hours later, a web site hijacked by Hailu Shawel’s friend, Ato Moges Brook, posted the seven-page statement that sounded like it came from ጊዜያዊ ወታደራዊ አስተዳደር ደርግ (Gizeawi Wotaderawi Asterdader Derg), with ‘የፍየል ወጠጤ’ (‘Yefiyel Wotete’) playing in the background.

The statement signed by Ato Hailu Shawel [read here] is nothing but an indictment against himself for it revealed how reckless and outlaw — not to mention out of touch with reality — he and his corrupt friends are.

In light of this latest development, the Kinijit Council must meet immediately and start a proceeding to impeach and remove Ato Hailu Shawel. He has done enough damage not only to Kinijit, but also to the struggle for democracy in Ethiopia, in general. If the Council fails to do that, i.e., enforce its own rules, it might as well disband itself.

  7. As this is a very serious setback, I can’t think of anything else. I I can’t even think it through. Where is the good Engineer heading? Is it him or the people around him? Why this and why not a respectful parting of lines? Is it money? Power? Is it fame? He is going to loose all these. Where is the wisdom of leading a party like CUD? Does it mean we were wrong about him? Was he the wrong choice by mere fact of his lack of capacity for leadership?

  18. As i hear what is recorded and what is signed and sealED By the chairman i felt that what i usually say came true in black and white.
    There is a proverb in Afar laguage “YEMTKOMEWA YEMJEMERIAWA GIMEL YEMTDEBEDEBEW YEMECHERESHAWA” AND “ANDSEW AWASH WUST BISEDADA KESWUYWE YETSEDADAW KEDMO YIWETAL”.
    These two proverbs tell us what is happenenning in the rift of Kinijit and shows us even the people we say are politically mature are always focusing on the stick rather than the carrot.
    Well what are we expecting to people always thinking unless they lead the struggle nothing will come in the future.

    Typically my generarion (cursed or blessed i do not know)is always envy and is thirst of power and please let we let the younger generation with new vision run it.

    BASSICALLY THE FOUNDATION OF kINIJIT IS THAT WE ALL ACCEPT THE RULE OF LAW AND WILL BE ABIDE WITH THE LAW but what i see now is as the same drum which were and are beated, even in the party we think will bring democracy to the nation.

    As everyone knows the Kinijit support groups could not be decisive to govern the party but they are resource inputs for flourishing the party but the crucail thing,the basis for Kinijit is the people of Ethiopia toiling without justice,living in poverty,imprisoned by the iron hand of EPRDF.
    I DO NOT KNOW WHY BOTH the chairperson or the deputy need blessing from the diaspora TO RUN THE COUNTRY UNLESS TO USE THE DIASPORA RESOURCE FOR THE WELL BEING OF THE PARTY.

    It is rediculous that we hear from the president such awful proclamation after the delegation is no more at his finger tipps, as a leader(even sick because during this time has adressed his supporters) he was able to assemble them and fight wrong ideas and straighten the wrongs rather than hybernating in the jacket of what he bless them as loyals.

    Are we going to the regime of decree in the third mellinium?did not he hiself told us every Ethiopian has got to say his mind and set what he feels with out any forceful measures? Or the president has forgotten the cadre who slapped him on the Philips building and tries to slap his colleagues with decree?

    If we want kinijit to be a powerful party what has to be done is the arrange a general meeting as soon as possible including those who are outside the country and solve the problem once and for all.

    WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT THE ETHIOPIAN PEOPLE WILL OVERTHROW THE EPRDF REGIME AND WHERE WE STAND THIS TIME.

  20. I think responding to Hailu and et al’s nonsense statements should not be the measure of performance for CUDP leaders. They know what, when and how to do. For practical reasons they might not be able to rush in the pace of our emotions. When the wind takes the rubbish out of our room we (CUDP members and supporters) should not be scared and confused by the noise all the light materials being blown out are making. It is just a noise without substance.

  21. Now seems the good and simple time for us to choose whom to follow. we have heard all allegations and name callings for the last four months. Thanks to technology we have been able to learn every bit of information out of those involved in the case. So it makes easier to make an informed decision. For me there is no more unified Kinijt, let us face it. look back the history of Ethiopian politics which is full of stubbornness, looking down the people. So the only and the easiest way is to let everyone or group let go its own way and see who can win the hearts and minds of the people. It is very clear who are the true and promising leader and who are not. So please leave each other alone and clean up your backyards, you have had enough time spent unnecessarily.

    He has been battling to control kinijit and its logo. He managed to do that abroad through Shaleka yosef long time ago. Now he is dealing with kinijit in Ethiopia. Kinijit bureau in Addis is under his control, he will have to fight for the kinijit name/logo. The first and last bullet is to fire at Birahnu and Co – indefinite suspension. He may fire some more if they go against this special press order. the battle has began in earnest :)

    Will he succeed to own kinijit name and logo? Hailu will not get kinijit name/logo, he will have to get a new name. “Harambe” is too foreign (but good try). The name kinijit will go to whom then? ayala and temesgen are hate eachother like enemies. What a shame! Will woyane give kinijit name to Hailu Shawel the president to let the infight simmer? no. woyane will let it die a slow death.

    All so- called kinijit people will not have the name and will not be paralyzed by their own greed. If Birhau fights for the name kinijit, Hailu will not stop his claim; endless fight will continue.What if something happens to him? Temesgen is still kinijit, ayele too. We will have to wait till this two also die after 2010 (who knows they may survive the 2010 election (woyane will bring them back :) ), ke zinjoro konjo min yimeraritu silehone). This is what it is all about. Hailu will not get kinijit name, others wont get it and in the process kinijit will be divided and its name will be buried.

    The kinijitian political platform will continue to be a Kindergarten play ground. No one will take kinijit seriously unless Birhanu and Co do something about it. What should they do? Continue as kinijit abroad and at home and continue with the childish game or change the name totally and let the real battle for democracy begin?

  24. The whole statement has one point: “Dr. Berhanu and Ms. Bertukan are barred because they didn’t worship his highness Hailu Shawl. They didn’t follow his footsteps like a child does to his father’s, they didn’t show up when he arrived at the airport…” I still couldn’t believe the engineer is so stupid and that he is growing stupider every moment. I wish he died in prison with honor. In those good days, our fathers used to die for honor. We do not have to be well versed in Freudian theory to see that the guy is growing more of a child as his age goes. Hi Mr. Hailu, we will see you next when you lick your fingers and play with them.   30. I am really sorry that once again this happened to the Ethiopian democratic movement. I heard similar statements when, in the 1980s, EPRP split itself into Ha and Le groups and started killing each other. Similar splits were observed in Derg and EPRDF too. Now Kinjit is repeating history. I think Ethiopian elites appear to be too selfish and egocentric to work together for a common good. So the struggle for freedom and democracy should begin with a fight against our egocentric mentalities. By the way as long as Hailu, Berhanu or any Ethiopian for that matter, is not free of those egocentric mentaliities he will not be any different from Meles or Mengistu when that person assumes power.

The difference between the donkey and his Highness Hailu is that the donkey was not cruel enough to go out and stop the grass from growing. Hailu is doing that. He not only wishes the grass to stop growing but he also wants to stop the grass from growing.

If KINJIT wants to topple EPRDF which would pave the way to more robust democratic process in our country, they need to be speaking and acting in a single voice.   39. Folks, Ato Hailu did not suspend the other 5 Kinijit leaders. He has called for their suspension by writing to the Kinijit council. At least he has recognized that it is the council that has the ultimate power.

    Technically he has the right to make his case. If the council deliberate then his letter must be read. According to the by-laws of Kinijit, let there be free and open discussion. Then the council will take actions.

    The council consist of more than 60 people. The central committee has 20 members. The central committee can suspend anyone and deferred the case to the council. Only the council can bar for always anyone.

    Out of the 20 original for sure 4 are out for they are now with Lidetu Ayalew. These are : Ato Mesfin Ayalew, Ato Lidetu Ayalew, Ato Abdurhaman Ahmedin and Ato Mushie Semu.

    Dr Mulualem Tarekegn is for sure in exile in Europe.

    From the former AEUP member Ato Hailu Shawel, Ato Abayneh and Major Getachew Mengiste are currently engaged in the effort to bring back the old AEUP. Eng, Gizachew and Ato Aklu Gerge from the former AEUP are opposing them.

    Hence what is legally needed is to have 8 members. These 8 members can suspend legally Ato Hailu and call a council meeting.

    When it comes to the council, out of the 60 , at least are with Lidetu 8 are abroad. So the total number of council members is 48 at most. There might be more with Ato Lidetu, or those who voluntarility left the party . Taking that into consideration the total active members of the CUD council may be way down to the 30ths. With half of this the council can meet and take decisive actions.

  42. I suggest the Dr. Berhanu group should form its own party, start opening offices in every part of Ethiopia, and mobilize people to sign them up as party members. Start traveling around the country immediately, and introduce the leadership and the party program to the peoples of Ethiopia.

    I think by moving quickly, Ethiopia can gain a lot. By just sitting around and bickering, everybody will lose.

  50. I just don’t get it. Why those who are returned and others in Addis meet and solve this thing? I’m NOT SATISFIED with Dr. Berhanu’s extended stay in the U.S at this critical moment. He should go to Addis and help others to solve the current crises.
