One of Ethiopia’s most popular singers, Manalemosh Dibo, passed away today from natural causes, according to news sources in Ethiopia.
Manalemosh died in South Africa where she went to receive medical treatment after suffering from intestinal cancer for over a year.
Before going to South Africa Manalemosh was receiving treatment at Tikur Anbessa (Black Lion) Hospital in Addis Ababa. When her condition deteriorated, Tikur Anbessa doctors recommended that she gets treatment abroad. Ethiopian billionaire Al Amoudi covered her expenses to travel to South Africa.
Manalemosh was a young singer who’s popularity grew with each song she released. She is particularly well-known for her traditional songs such as Asabelew, Awdamet, and Minjar.
Below is a video of one of her most popular and Ethiopian Review’s favorite songs:

Que son ame repose en paix. C’est l’une de mes artistes preferees . Nous ne te oubliorons jamais. “sache que ta music sera et vira pour toujour”….
Betame enaznalen. Bertate le-betesebochua.
Cancer, a white man’s disease, has penetrated our country, Ethiopia, and has claimed the precious life of our beautiful, young sister, Manalemosh Dibo, one of the best Ethiopian traditional singers at an early age.
Ethiopian doctors at Tikur Anbesa (Black Lion Hospital), unable to treat her life-threatening disease finally sent her to another African country as if South African doctors were better than the Ethiopian doctors in treating “mekersa” (cancer).
She should have been sent immediately to America where many cancer patients have been treated, and many of them have survived. Unfortunately, the government of Ethiopia has failed her to cover her expenses to get a well-advanced cancer treatment from the Western doctors; it is indeed a great tragedy for Ethiopia to have lost such a gifted singer, a precious national treasure, a pride, and a memorable icon for the present and the future generation.
Understanding the value of such a great singer, Al Amoudi has covered her expenses but the Ethiopian government has failed to do its part, knowing, perhaps, she is from Oromia, not from Tigray.
Ethiopia is blessed to have so many talented young men and women from all its ethnic’s groups but cursed that she has produced ruthless leaders such as Mengistu Haile Mariam and Meles Seitanawi (Zenawi). I’m sure, Meles or his wife Azeb (Jezebel) Mesfin has never visited her while she was in a hospital.
To the complete negligence of the Woyanne government, to the unequal distribution of wealth to the Ethiopian people, and to the expelling of the best and the brightest Ethiopian doctors from their country they love to serve, our beloved sister, Ms. Manalemosh Dibo, passed away in a foreign country and in the hands of foreign doctors and nurses, perhaps, unaccompanied by her family because of the heavy expenses for a hotel or motel to stay in South Africa.
May the Almighty God bless her soul in heaven and comfort her family and her friends in Ethiopia and abroad!
Thank you, Elias, for posting one of her best songs, and I was in tears when I heard her sing “Minjar.” She left us only her memories, but we will never see her face again, her movement and her future new song.

Well, your being kind of racist. Cancer is not a “white man’s disease:. Any race of any type can get it, so I strongly disagree with you there. Though about everything else I agree with. Especially, well everything. And yeah, they should’ve sent her to here, America. Bye.
What a great singer she was, I will miss her very much.

This is a very sad story for most ethiopians. She’s been our tradational identity. When my non-Ethiopian ask me abt ethiopian tradition, I always prefer to show her music video “awdamet” for them.
May God bless her soul!

i am really sad but i am happy
I am very saddened by what happened. She was one of may favorite cultural singers.
I wish, non sense as always is, Assta have gone in her place. For one thing South Africa is in no comparison with Ethiopia by any standard. It is a nuclear power and a center of quality medicine at low cost. Do you know SA is the home of Jonathan Lewis (oncologist) who was associated with the development of several successful and innovative cancer drugs both in the US and throughout the world. It is a country where you can find best Doctors at reasonable prices.
Secondly, bringing someone in the US or Germany does not guarantee s/he will get the best Doctors and treatment. Thirdly, treatment success of cancer depends on the stage at which you diagnosed the cancer. If she dies just one year after it is discovered may mean the diagnosis was very late might be at stage three or four (terminal stage-untreatable). Many rich and respected people have died including Senator Kennedy and many will be dying of Cancer any where in the world.
Finally, no matter how much we hate Woyane, it has nothing with her death. Come on, the opposition does not think as cheap as you do.
What a voice ! full of essence…She took it all with her? Fortunately, she left some of her legacy here. May God bless her soul and rest her in peace.
Thank You Elias.
I am eritrean i dont speak amharic..I never really listen amharic like that but manalemosh when i first heard her on youtube i fall in love with her..i finally was able to get her cd like a yr ago. she is the only amharic cd i have. I loved her singing style, its so traditional, so beautiful. I pray for her family & friends… and pray she may she found peace now. I love u and will miss u Manalemosh.

manalemosh dibo nebsishn yimarew
I don’t know what to say but its really unbelievable shit.
why she took off earlier and easily like that? I always love
hers songs and never feed up with hers voice. Mani I love
you so much. Even you’re not around , you’re work will be
living forever. Rest in peace where ever you’re . I am going
to missed you.

RIP!
Did she have really intestinal cancer? If that was the case she would have got referral a year ago. My guess is Dibo had a bleeding ulcer and started surgical treatment in Black lion Hospital. It the surgical complication that prompted a referral at the last minute. If indeed it was an intestinal cancer, the diagnosis is often made at late stage with no cure no matter where she is.
Very sad news, I am shocked and deeply saddened by her death. She was my all time favorite traditional singer. My heart goes out to her family and friends.
Yes, many people die from cancer allover the world, but millions of Ethiopians simply die from lack of basic medical care and medicine. Cancer is not the only killer in Ethiopia, besides being killed by woyanes bullets, they die of preventable diseases like malaria, famine and diabetes.
may you rest in peace manalemosh. I don’t know what to say i am just shoked. It’s 1 o’clock and i couldn’t sleep and as i was on the net i noticed something about you dear and i just found out that you passed away. What a shock this is! deep condolences to your family
We lost our RIP b/c of tamerat geleta ( eyangalele)
does any one think TAMIRAT (TENKUAYU) is responsible for her lost?
how is death from cancer considered ” death from natural causes” .. it isn’t exactly natural is it? I thought death from old age was the only one to classify as “natural”
Her cancer may be curable if acted up on time.one can imagine that our economic diastor let every body from reaching for her life to save. We miss her for ever, may GOD bless her life. peace up on her.
may God bless for her soul
To all my friends and foes:
Anonymous (#11),
I’m not hundred percent sure she was from Oromia, and that is why I said, “perhaps.”
Ras (#13),
Who brought chemical fertilizer to Ethiopia? The white man brought it; some of the Ethiopian farmers started using it, and as a result of this cancerous white man’s product, many Ethiopians are now dying of cancer.
Do you remember what the Italians brought to Ethiopia while they were occupying the country for five years? They brought prostitution, “bojelie” and “kiting” (syphilis). Ask some Ethiopian historians, and they would tell you what other damaging illnesses they brought to Ethiopia.
Shegaw (#14),
You wrote: “…the government money belong [s] to the people” of Ethiopia. Remember, Manalemosh Dibo was one of the people of Ethiopia, and at that, the brightest one, and I argue the government of Ethiopia should have taken care of her since she had entertained millions of Ethiopians. She was one of the national monuments of Ethiopia: we know the Woyanne government takes care of some of those Ethiopian historical sites; in this case, wasn’t she one of those historical places, even better than some of those old historical areas. She should have been given a special treatment by the government of Ethiopia, because she was the delight of the Ethiopian people, and I am sure the Ethiopian tax payers should have never complained if some of their tax money had been spent to save the life of this unique creature of God – Manalemosh Dibo.
I suggest whenever an Ethiopian artist is affected by a debilitating disease such as cancer; the government give the cancer patient a helping hand.
Minaw (#17)
I pity you for you have no clue at all what kind of civilization was there during the Stone Age; neither do you have any idea that people of the Stone Age developed basic skills during their time. You have no any logical thinking how archeologists divide the Stone Age into three broad periods: The Old Stone Age, or Paleolithic, the Middle Stone Age, or Mesolithic, and the New Stone Age, Neolithic.
During the Stone Age, people found that seeds placed in the earth would grow into plants that would furnish both food and many more seeds. Especially their greatest invention was agriculture – one of the greatest discoveries of all time. They also discovered wheat and barley. They tamed the wild dogs that most of the people now use as their best friends; they also domesticated sheep, goats, pigs, and cattle; they learned spinning, weaving, and making blankets, and your people in Ethiopia are still doing it, thanks to the people of the Stone Age. Also, it was the people of the Stone Age who invented religion, living together, working together as a team and defending their own territories.
I am certain your narrow brain cannot comprehend what had been achieved during the Stone Age.
By the way, to which period do you belong, to the Stone Age, to the Bronze Age, to the Dark Age? I’m hundred percent sure you don’t belong to the Modern Age because you have invented or done nothing tangible. To me, you simply belong to the dystopic realm of the after life where the departed souls of the dead – those who passed away without believing in Jesus Christ – reside.
Owho (#25),
In your thinking South Africa is a nuclear power country; therefore she has the best doctors, the best nurses, and she is the center of the best medicine. If your assertion were true, your master, Meles Seitanawi (Zenawi) could have gone there for his medical treatment instead of going to Europe. If the government of Ethiopia has taken care of this young singer at the early stages of her cancer and sent her to America, she might have survived, but the careless government of yours didn’t help her at all because she does not belong to his tribes. Meles Seitanawi knows precisely that in Ethiopia there is only one doctor for every 40,000 people, one nurse for every 8,000 people, only one program to deal with cancer, one cobalt machine to serve 80 million Ethiopians.
Dr. Bogale Solomon at Tikur Anbesa Hospital has said once: ‘Public awareness of cancer is very low and the diagnosis of cancer is considered a death sentence. The waiting time, particularly for radio therapy is 6 months. As a result, some patients die while waiting for treatment.’ That is what had happened to our sister Manalemosh, waiting for a long time to get the best medicine, the best doctor, and finally ended her life in one of the developing countries instead of coming to America or England.
The Life’s Second Chance Foundation urges us this way: “Please come forward and join our vision of bringing modern day treatment, common in the USA, to patients in Ethiopia while instilling dignity, comfort and hope.” It didn’t say “bring modern day treatment, common in South Africa,” to Ethiopia. As far as Meles Seitanawi is in power, people in Ethiopia will never die in dignity, comfort, and hope in their own country.
Knowing that Ethiopia has shortages of doctors, nurses, modern equipments, and medicine, Meles Seitanawi should have sent our cancer patient sister to America, and the American doctors may have saved her life. Senator Kennedy’s brain cancer cannot be compared with Manalemosh Dibo’s, perhaps, curable disease.
You wrote when you have nothing important to write: “I wish non sense as always is, Assta have gone in her place.” Your desperate statement tells me that my previous comments on various subjects, especially on Islam and about your master, Meles Seitanawi, have pierced your heart and broken your bones. For your information, sooner or later, I will follow her if my departure from this troublesome world gives you some kind of satisfaction. You expressed a death wish for me because you know very well I am one of the worst enemies of Meles Seitanawi, your lord and god. Believe it or not, I am going to live on this earth, perhaps, 150 years “For nothing is impossible with God,” (Luke 1:37) and every thing is possible for him.
May our departed sister get eternal comfort in heaven!
I saw her doing her famous dance in verginia area few years ago, and i thouugt she was ahead of time, because move so fast and her style of dancing was so amaizing, the energy she has was amaizing!! she will be very missed!
RIP SISTER.
I will miss you very much Manalimosh, I only wish we knew to provide the help we could. Very unfortunate to lose you at this time. Thank you very much for singing at my wedding a year ago. May your soul rest in peace. We love you and miss you deeply. You were the best singer Debo…
She had been sick for one year? and we did not know she was sick that long? WHAT A LAZY, CARELESS AND IGNORANT COMMUNITY!!!! I’M SO ANGRY!!AHHGGG
We lost one of our iconic figure in our culture. may God be with her.
Shame on you Assta or whatever your name is. How on earth that u say that Cancer is a white man’s desease ? Why the government should cover her medical treatment expense ? If you guys come on and criticize the government for about anything, how can you be credible when it comes to real political positions ?
This all shows me that Meles has got another bright future in the Ethiopian leadership. For the moment, he is the only one who understood what political games is all about.
I’m simply discouraged !!!!!!!!!
RIP.
I believ this is the third of forth traditional popular female singer died in the last few years…I just can’t come up with their names at this time. What’s going on?
Why South Africa, why not US or Swiss. I am sure she will be survive if she has got treatment in this countries. Very sad.
