EDITOR’S NOTE
JULY 1996
Several times in the past we have discussed about the importance of free press and particularly ER’s unique role in the Ethiopian society. Press freedom in Ethiopia is ever diminishing under relentless attack by the EPRDF-ruled government. ER and several other independent publications were forced to stop their operations in Ethiopia as a result of government campaign of harassment, including arrest of journalists, bureaucratic obstacles and confiscation of the publications from vendors. ER, however, continues to exist and provide valuable service, under difficult circumstances, to Ethiopians in exile. Its independence and policy of tolerance makes it a target of attack, even in exile, by various intolerant, radical groups besides the government.
As ER approaches its 5th anniversary, we would like to assure our readers that ER will continue to serve as a forum for discussion of important issues while providing information about Ethiopia and Ethiopians throughout the world. We seek your suggestions, recommendations and continued participation in this effort. An independent press is a required ingredient for democracy to flourish, thus all Ethiopians must embrace and preserve the values of freedom of the press.
