EDITOR’S NOTE
FEBRUARY 1996
We have received reports from independent sources that last month EPRDF forces crossed Sudanese border and occupied some Sudanese border towns. We denounce this blatant aggression by the Ethiopian government on a neighboring country. We would also like to advise the Sudanese that the Ethiopian people oppose any form of aggression on its neighboring country and that this war is being conducted by a government that puts ahead the interest of separatist Eritreans and Western powers before that of the Ethiopian people. This misadventure by Meles & Co. is worrisome to us. It seems that the government of Meles Zenawi is launching this attack on Sudan in support of its comrade-in-arms, Issayas Afeworki, who is becoming the region’s bully. Issayas already attacked Yemen and is organizing and arming insurgent groups to overthrow his former backer, the government of Sudan. The U.S., British and Israel are also instigating the attack on Sudan. In fact, we believe that it is with the urging of the U.S., British and Israel that Meles and Issayas are engaged in a campaign to destabilize and overthrow the government of Sudan. Sudan is accused by the U.S. and its allies of spreading Islamic fundamentalism and sponsoring terrorism. We reject the idea that Sudan presents threat to Ethiopia, and Meles has no right to put Ethiopia in the service of U.S., British, Israel, and Eritrean bad boy Issayas.
