(Yemen Times) — The Ethiopian refugee Seble Yohanes told the Yemen Times that she is only thirty, but her pale face with wide eyes full of concern makes her looks as if she was 50.
[Ethiopian refugee Seble Yohannes]
Looking for a safe place to raise her demands, Yohanes went to the Ministry of Human Rights in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a on Saturday. Yohanes, along with other refugees from Ethiopia, decided to sleep on the pavement next to the Ministry.
During the daytime, this exposed place becomes a sit-in rally to demand protection of their rights from the United Nations Higher Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Yemeni government.
“The police forces arrested us in front of the Human Rights Ministry,” Yohanes said, with fear evident in her pallid face at the thought of police, who have repeatedly raided illegal refugees in Yemen and arrested as many as they can.
Ethiopian refugees contacted Yohanes and her compatriots in an attempt to relay details of the inhuman conditions inside the police detention center, intensifying her fear of ending up like them.
Yohanes handed her mobile over to a Yemen Times reporter while Hathem, Yohanes’ friend speaking on the phone while being held in a crowded detention center in Sana’a, tried to paint a vivid picture of his brutal conditions and suffering, in the hopes that the whole world might know about those in the detention centers.
More than 220 imprisoned Ethiopians are kept inside a single room. The prisoners are subjected to beating and only given one meal a day, according to Hathem.
“Diseases are spreading due to the unhealthy environment and we are not allowed to receive medical treatment,” added Hathem, who speaks limited Arabic.
The words of Hathem stoked Yohanes’ and her friends’ fear of having to face a similar fate. Unfortunately, their fears did not take long to materialize.
On Saturday afternoon, police forces arrested Yohanes along with seven other Ethiopian refugees, including two women and a 5 year-old girl, Sara.
They were taken from behind the Ministry of Human Rights, according to eyewitnesses.
While in a police patrol car, Yohanes managed to make a brief call to the Yemen Times. She spoke with difficulty, as it was clear she was crying.
“We were supposed to meet with Horia Mashhor, the Yemeni Minister of Human Rights, later today,” she said.
“After several days of continued attempts and great efforts to get to Mashhor, who was passing us for days going in and out of the Ministry, looking very busy, she agreed to meet us and set an appointment to discuss our situation.”
She said that they had short conversations with Mashhor in front of the Ministry of Human Rights, and after talking to them for a few moments she was interrupted with several calls from governmental officials who told her to leave, not taking into consideration her conversation with the refugees.
Two days prior to her arrest, police managed to detain most of the refugees who had created a protest encampment in front of the United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees for eleven months, she noted.
According to Yohanes, some refugees were held in a prison in Sana’a, while some others were moved to the camp for African refugees located in the Kharaz coastal area near the strait of Bab Al-Mandab, a key shipping lane through which more than three million barrels of oil pass daily.
Useless asylum ID
There is nothing that can protect Yohanes and the other refugees from police pursuit and relentless raids except for asylum IDs issued by UNHCR.
The first provision of the ID, however, states that the UNHCR’s ability to interfere and protect the refugees is still limited.
The UNHCR office recognizes only the official refugees carrying IDs. But according to the UNHCR, holders of these IDs are not necessarily guaranteed any financial assistance nor the right to resettle in a third country. This draws the ire of African refugees, particularly Ethiopians.
The IDs terms are based on Articles no.17 and 22 of the 1951 United Nations convention relating to the status of refugees, which was ratified by Yemen. The convention only ensures refugees the right to work and public education. The ID has to be renewed every year.
Some minority groups from the Ethiopian political opposition have managed to resettle in the United States and EU countries after staying in Yemen for a while.
Yohanes, like most of the African refugees who continue flowing into Yemen, do not want to settle down in Yemen. They consider it a transition point for their resettlement in rich countries like the Gulf states, the US, or EU countries.
Imam Hussein Edrees, a 60-year-old Ethiopian refugee, was standing among refugees at the protest encampment in front of the Ministry of Human Rights, holding his old refugee documents in his hands.
On November 16, 1992, Edrees obtained his asylum in Yemen from the UNHCR, and had been renewing his ID every year, until 2006, when the UN agency began to refuse to continue renewing his asylum card.
Although he has had five official appointments with UNHCR representatives in Yemen, Edrees said he has not been able to meet any officials of the UN Refugee Agency.
Khadija Nassr Al-Din, another Ethiopian refugee, who has been in Yemen for more than fifteen years, said her husband Kaidani Mariam Asfa died in 2001 after a long struggle with intestinal cancer. However, neither the UNHCR nor the Yemeni government offered her or her husband any assistance.
With her eyes full of tears, Kadija said, ” my husband died while hugging our son.”
While Kadija is Muslim, her husband was Christian. Their son, Ibrahim, was given a common name to both religions. They embodied a unique coexistence between people with different religious backgrounds.
Thousands of African refugees risk their lives when they cross the Red Sea on board small boats run by human traffickers. Smugglers dump them into the sea two kilometers from the Yemeni shore, forcing them to swim the rest of the way.
Yohanes said that in the boats belonging to traffickers, the refugees are mercilessly beaten if they attempt to move or raise heads or hands.
In a separate event, last month the Interior Ministry found an armed gang in Haradh area, in the northern governorate of Hajjah located along the borders with Saudi Arabia. The gang was holding dozens of illegal African refugees prisoner, mostly Ethiopians.
In a statement, the ministry said more than 170 African refugee were kidnapped, including ten women, 50 children, and 19 old men. The refugees were subjected to beating and torture by the armed gang.
“Due to beating that targeted the face and other sensitive areas, some refugees now suffer from sight and hearing problems,” added the statement.
The ministry also revealed that in February, police forces had managed to arrest two members of the armed gang. The two members had been detaining 128 illegal refugees from whom they were trying to extort money.
More than 65,000 Ethiopian immigrants arrived to Yemen in 2011, compared to 34,422 in 2010, according to the UNHCR.
The UN refuge agency further pointed out that 37, 333 Ethiopians arrived in Yemen illegally, revealing that 616 are either dead or still missing.

My people, the solution is to stay home and to solve your problem from home. UN will not save you; We are telling you from life experience.
North,South, East, West, home is the only best. Going Yemen or middle east is from the beginning wrong. You go to better place, one does not go worst place.
Ethiopians make an uninformed decision about their life and end up in the worst place on earth. Even Somalian who are muslim who would be expected to be treated better in middle east have stopped migrating to middle east. Somalians find their way to Europe, North American, but never to middle east.
Ethiopians have become like butterfly that goes into fire by itself. Have your ever seen when a butterfly fly into fire? that is what Ethiopians do all the time. Somalians learnt and said no going to middle east, but Ethiopians never learn.

I GOT A SOLUTION!!
Gezaee, I got another suggestion for solution. How about all these so called Ethiopianists go to Yemen and marry the sisters and bring them to America, the land of honey and milk:-) That way, the sisters won’t have to face misery as they have been doing; and these so called Ethiopiansits won’t have to suffer lonely life. You see honey and milk is not enough for a man’s existence; or is it not the people they love, rather the land and power?
Let, you Ethiopianist speak out, tell me you will go to Yemen and marry these unfortunate sisters instead of blaming everything and everyone but yourself for Ethiopia’s misery. Let’s see you do something better than the government you blame. Otherwise shut the hell up and let every one alone.
Good day

Ezana,
What you are saying is not my job. Meles Zenawi took power and refused even to share power with anyone and he has been on power now for 25 years almost. The reason one holds office is not to beg money for donation or to take loan from IMF, WB, china, India, … and to sell land, national asset, export girls for sex. King Meles Zenawi was supposed to lookafter the girls and the babies of the country. Unfortunately, TPLF people think they are only to loot and to sell in Ethiopia; they are not responsible?
Were I live the government lookafter its citizens from the day they are born. What you are saying is irresponsible and lack ethics or morals. Why do you think are the TPLF leaders holding office? just to divide people into Kilel and sell land only?
Ezana, ere ante besmab bel. Ethiopianists can help only if the government was representative and publicly accepted. But as you know Meles rules Ethiopia by the gun. No Ethiopian wanted Meles or no one elected him. My point is why then hold power if you can lookafter your citizen?
Ezana, pleases learn from where you live a little bit. Please, you live with all the freedoms and but you still advocate or sympathize with the repressionist Meles gangs.
The Ethiopians could do their part if they were allowed to help their country. But TPLF chased from day one those who love their country. The 40 Professors TPLF chased from Addis Ababa University in 1991 have been serving Swaliland, Bostwana, South Africa with high pay. TPLF did not hurt them. It did hurt the country by chasing them. TPLF does not like Ethiopians. TPLF likes Indians, Arabs, Chinese,… than Amharas? did you get it? TPLF is the problem it is not the Ethiopianist.
In the past 25 years, Ethiopia could have been liberated from poverty. But TPLF came with disastours policies which are not acceptable by Ethiopians in general. TPLF has wasted 25 years forcing itself on the people than taking counsel of the people and working with the people. You see the 40 Professors refused to the policy of landlocking Ethiopia. TPLF chased them. Ethiopia lost those brilliant and highly skilled Professors and on top of that Ethiopia paid 50 billion dollars in the past 25 years to buy ports from Djibouti, Sudan, Kenya. You see, Ethiopia lost its Professors because of TPLF and it lost its ports because of TPLF. The 50 billion dollars could have been used to train the girls which Meles is trafficking them to Arab for sex trade? They could have been trained to grow flowers, other self-reliance training programes. But TPLF became another problem than a solution and made Ethiopia much worse than ever before by holding the counry hostage and engaged in illegal land grab business. You see, TPLF steal away land from people and sell it to foreign citizens for 1 dollar per hectare per year for 99 years. If TPLF could have listened to Ethiopians it could have spent the last 25 years in developing the country. However, TPLF refused to listen and wasted the last 25 years managing conflicts which are created by itself.
Now, your have new rebels all over the country. Rebel around Tigray. Rebel around Gonder. Rebel around Gambela. Rebel around Ogaden. Rebel around Gojam. Rebel around Afar? Rebel around Oromia? you see, do you think TPLF will continue in this way? TPLF has done big big big big mistakes and its mistakes is not even changing. It is adding more mistakes everyday and Ethiopians are getting fed up. It will not belong TPLF will be thrown into the dust bin of history. I am saying this to counter attack your Ethiopianist blame on the suffering of Ethiopians. Blame TPLF which has refused 100% to work with citizens. We have advised TPLF in this forums to change and reform. But TPLF has no ear to hear and has no eye to see. TPLF means dumb dumb dumb dumb 100%.

Hello Gezaee H.,
I thought you were one of us Hodam Amharas. I think i read few articles with suspicion toward you in the past. I guess you are an Amhara with flat stomach:-)
Okay…I never accused you for not doing a job that Meles was supposed to do. As far as Meles’ sharing power, I think he does with those who have similar political views. However, I am not to suggest that is good enough. Why does not he share with those who earn it, such as those who won, at least 21 out of 23 seats in Addis during the previous election? That is because Meles is power thirsty and politically corrupt. I don’t think anyone, even ehadeg members whom I had an opportunity to have a decent dialog, will deny that.
However, that does not give anyone the right to just cross one’s arm and declare that it is not his Job. If you really care for Ethiopia as many claim to do so, there are so much that can be done. For a starter, help those within the city, state, country you live in and eventually those in middle-east and other places. But if you keep telling me how much you love Ethiopia without doing the simple things such as the ones I just mentioned, I will just take you for hypocrite.
I really don’t agree with your analysis of TPLF people being out there just to loot and sell Ethiopia. I believe that they have their own formula that they really believe is the best for the country. As far as dividing the country in kilil, I think you are talking about article 39 of Ethiopia’s current constitution. I don’t have any problem with that. As a matter of fact my question is how genuine is Meles’ government with its approach of Article 39. Does the government use it just because it is politically expedient or is it(the government) honestly believe in it and is out there to implement it.
The foundation of Article 39 was not actually something that was originated within TPLF. It was something that was started during the Ethiopian students’ movement, latter it was carried on by EPRP (Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Party). I suspect you and many out there look at article 39 as divisive. I don’t see it like that. As a matter of fact, if it is implemented correctly, it saves the unity of Ethiopia. Otherwise the Balkanization of the country is imminent sooner or later.
The empire of Ethiopia was known to have been raping nations and nationalities of the land. The only way you can convince the victims to stay within is by providing them a guarantee that what happened to them in the past will never be repeated.
You see if you are known to be a rapist, and all the sudden you declare that you are a good man that you wanted to marry the one you love and live with her happily forever, it will be natural for her to put preconditions to make sure that you won’t abuse her again.
But if you continue that it is your way or the highway, I guarantee you, they will choose the latter. What I am saying doesn’t seem realistic because you are used to reading and debating with the same type of people. Look at this blog, you have for most part people of the same camp, ethnicity, political view who share, more or less, the same values. It was not necessarily the case in the past. ER was a place where the best minds from all walks of life argue, debate and discusses current issues pertaining social, economic and political reality of Ethiopia. I admired Mr Kifle for the tenacity and
dedication to maintain such a continued and balanced forum at the time. Unfortunately, ER today is a play ground for childish people such as I am and Jegnaw Ethiopiawe.
However, my friend I invite you to go and check out the other blogs: oromos, Somalis, Harraris, Afar and so on. Then, only then you will know where I am coming from. Ethiopia is a big country with all types of people and views. If one has to come up with any panacea for the problem of our country, then one has to entertain all types of ideas, including that of TPLF, or as you call it woyanes’. You are not the only Ethiopian. As Amhara, you may constitute about 40% of the population. Out of that, Hodam like me (as you love to call us) are not with you; believe me there are so many of us out there.
Your comparison of Ethiopian government to that of well advanced countries, such as the ones you live in, in terms of what the government can do for its people, is ridicules!! Ethiopia is a country that has been abused, misused and used by its past corrupt leaders. Hence, it (Ethiopia) still depends on, partly, on foreign handouts. As if that is not bad, its population doubled within in just the last 25-30 years. To me it is a miracle that we didn’t experience starvation at the height of the ones we had during Haileselsse and Mengistu’s regimes.
TPLF likes Chinese, Indians and Arabs than Amharas? I don’t even know what to say about this part of your arguments; all I am going to say is that you are a little paranoid. I am sure you are talking about the land lease. I totally disagree with the government of Ethiopia when it comes to that part of their economic formula. It does not make any sense whatsoever. It is Ethiopia that needs food more than the Indians, Chinese and Arabs, yet here they were given large plot of lands for them to cultivate and export productions. IT JUST DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE!! I think it is a crime against starving Ethiopia. I do hope the government will reconsider its position before it is too late.
I am not sure if Ethiopia could be liberated within the last 26 years considering many factors including the repeated global economic crisis. However, it could have been better than where it is today. Then again, I don’t have all the particulars nor do I have economics knowledge to provide you with a realistic argument or to support your claim.
About the rebels: I guess Ethiopian history is full of the story of rebels. I don’t know if there was any time in our history that we didn’t have such phenomenon in our country.
In conclusion, I believe that TPLF/Ehadeg has done better than the past when it comes to economic progress. I have been to Ethiopia few years ago. I couldn’t believe what I saw: as many fold roads, school, hospitals and other economic sectors than ever before, even in remote areas. However, i believe that the government is politically corrupt. This does not mean it will never change. Or it does not mean there are not progressive individuals inside the government who will take the right path. Speaking of corruption, I think it is part of our unfortunate culture. TPLF is a collection of people. These people did drop out of the sky; they are out of the society at large; a society that has been corrupted, not by its fault, but by the process of a long time abuse by its corrupt leaders. Is there any Ethiopian that grew up without coming across a saying that goes, “sishom yalbela, syshar yekochewal”? However, I am realistic and optimistic enough to hope that eventually something good will come out of this government, otherwise we are doomed to fail again and again.
Good day
Ezana From Toronto A.K.A. Hodam Amhara
This because there is Ethiopia is under a BLACK colonizers and the rest who don’t get enough are the bandas. I have an advice for all who are back home with all the money and extra cash on hand, this the time to rise up ugainst the tyrant for your kind of human dignity . Today it is someone’s sister or what have you tomorrow it will be you. I read this news while I’m crying. To my amazement with all the suturing of people back home the bandas, hodams, sekarams, zetets, and the looters are bringing whatever it takes and sale it to the Diaspora. I pray to God for that crucial day to come in Ethiopiau when every looters are back home partying. About 35 years ago HIM lost power to another tugs for letting Welo go hungry while one of the prevlilaged was giving a wedding party with a cake that was imported from Englad. Today’s prevlilaged export teff and little girls to Areb countries, is there some imbalance or not? In Ethiopia the prists used to pray for underprepared but today’s Pops and prists build villas and fest with women. I pray for that day to come.

Gazaee,
How I wish you shut the h…up! Are you mentally deaf and mentally blind to understand the 22 years of cruelty and inhumanity of Meles and the rest of his thugs? The desperate Ethiopians leave Ethiopia to save their lives from the most brutal, inhumane, worthless, shameful and cruel pitiful dictator and his TPLF puppets! Meles and his thugs, have robbed, sold the most fertile land, tortured, incarcerated and killed hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians! What is so difficult to understand when it right there in the open that Meles and his criminal buddies have zero conscience and have been ruling the country by force with hot iron fist? Have you ever tried to think for a moment, how it would feel to be so painfully desperate and walk in the shoes of the oppressed Ethiopians from small children that have been sold for profit and the young girls who have been sold to Arab countries to be enslaved and the rest of all Ethiopians who have been evicted from their homes and their properties and put through hell by these Godless, merciless criminal Woyanes who have no love for Ethiopia/ns and they are truly in it to divide Ethiopians and to fatten their pockets.
Yemen used to be as terrible even back in stable and peaceful days thirty and forty years ago. Yemen is bad even for Meweleds, people with Ethiopian citizenship but of Yemeni ancestry. This is a testimony that in Ethiopia, everything has failed. The education, church, media, communities – all have failed. How in the world then people travel to Yemen in the year 2012 with the exception of Ogadenians perhaps when the facts and reality are worse. There is a phantom spirit in Ethiopia that persuades the gullibles to blindlly crave traveling to Arabia, which was unheard of before Mengistu and Meles.

Anonymous,
Cool down! because TPLF or Meles is doing this and that you do not have to kill yourself or throw yourselve. You have to fight at home for your dignity than than leave home and sit at the UN gate in Yemen? You have very poor reason. There are many dictators in the world, but you do not see people like Ethiopian and Eritrean leaving their country in droves? The country is sick man. Every citizen is sick. Every Ethiopians leaves not necessarily because of Meles, the majority of Ethioipians leave for better life. We know this. I am not denying the existence of oppression. But at the same time, I know why the majority of Ethiopians leave legally and illegally.
I do agree with the second comment, Ethiopia is a failed nation. The education system is useless, the Ethiopian orthodox church has failed miserably. The citizen has failed. Even if the regime is not good, the people have obligation to remove it than to leave their home to become sedetegnea. As one Ethiopian said one time in Sidet: ” Sidet malet wurdet malet neew.” But Ethiopians think sidet is the gate way to prosperirty. But Sidet is a gate way to wurdet or humiliation.

Gazaee,
You just do not have the heart and the understanding of human suffering, period! You keep on blaming the victims and try to come up with some kind of excuse for inexcusable act of horror the satanic Meles regime have been committing on the country and Ethiopian people since they have taken power. The two blood cousins Isayas and Meles you mentioned, are the worst of worst hateful coldblooded subhumans that have ever been born in the land of Ethiopia and the two evil blood related cousins have been able to convince their followers to be just as cruel and hateful as they are. Would you stay in the burning building or would you try to save your behind from that fire and save yours and your family lives? Ethiopian people have been living in a slow burning building that was started by ruthless Meles and his TPLF thugs for the last 22 years and Meles and his TPLF mafia group have intensified the fire and it has gotten hotter and deadly for Ethiopians and many have lost their lives already and a lot of Ethiopians had enough to just sit there and burn to death. Ethiopians have to do everything they can to save their lives and to free themselves from the hands of Evil Meles and TPLF.

My advise to Woyenti is to change their policies to the demand of the majority of Ethiopians and these dogs will stays dogs forever until they die. The indulge in degrading and insulting people. They spent their entire life chewing tribes and ethnics but they never see theirs except accuse others as ethnicists? they themselves they can say anything they want? but we cannot say anything? You barbaric racists and backward. It people like you kept the country poor and backward.
I will join TPLF and I will meet you wherever you want. Bastards, primitives. You will laugh now more. Okay. Leave alone woyane, I do not hate any human on the planet; i do not even hate you. Until 1974 Ethiopia was among the countries with the least of its citizens living abroad. Now when the tigrigna speakers took power with the help of USA and the west it is a country with thousands of its citizens leaving it annually.
That is a shame.
One also wonders why do these refugees choose to run away from their country instead of fighting the enemy at home ?
And, Ethiopia used to be a hospitable country for foreigners, with the experience of Ethiopian refugees abroad the last 21 years this will totally change. Foreigners no matter arabs, europeans or africans will be treated badly in Ethiopia.
Dear Elias,
I appreciate you Elias; I admired you so far. You have been good. Thank your for allowing me to express my view in your website. This is my last website to visit. I will never come again because there are racist, Aparthied agents who believe they are always right and have no any respect for any Ethiopians. They know nothing except insult and spewing their venom of hatre. They are abusive. It is better to stay away from Habesha to be honest. Ethiopia is a poor country for good reasons. Also the racist will blame everything one woyane. The problem of Ethiopia is not only woyane. These racist themselves are much worse than woyane. How could this racists and ethnicist treat people if they were to be in Arat kilo?
I do not want even to see an Ethiopians after now. I had enough. Ethiopians the most backward race on the planet. Other people use internet for business and for learning. These racist and backward creatures come her hiding behind pc to insult people and to degrade people on purpose. They spend day and night chew ethnics.
Once again, thanks Elias, keep up the good work. Cheers!

Gazaee H,
Don’t let the door hit your behind on the way out! You are one pathetic laughable and confused woyane who cannot reason at all!!!
The horrific crimes and Every evil thing that have been committing on Ethiopia and Ethiopians are by Meles and your woyane brothers and sisters! Why hate Ethiopians for calling the evil act of Meles and woyanes EVIL? It is tyrant Meles who has given orders for innocent Ethiopians to be picked up from the streets of Addis and other places of Ethiopia to be locked up, beaten and gunned down without any cause…It is tyrant Meles and TPLF who have looted the country and gotten rich, locked up the bravest and the brightest opposition leaders, teachers, journalists, businesses men and women and even young students…It is tyrant Meles and Woyanes who decided to evict Ethiopians from Afar, Amhara, Gambela and Oromo from their homes and properties and handed their fertile land to Sudanese government and foreign billionaires…and so on and so forth, the crimes of Meles and the rest of Woyanes are treacherous and endless.
It is a sign of instability, ridiculousness and mental confusion on your side for you to get awfully upset and mad at innocent Ethiopians and our religious leaders to call on all Ethiopians to stop an evil regime to stop the distraction of our country and innocent lives and also that have looted, rooted out Ethiopians, shown total disrespect for our historical religious sights and human lives. You, my friend are barking at the wrong tree like a mad dog it has lost its mind. May the loving God give you the understanding of Evil and good and what is really going on in Ethiopia and the inhumanity and evilness of your Woyane brothers and sisters. I know for sure you will be back to this website under a different name!
Till then, Goodbye Gazaee!
your friend, Anonymous.

Gezaee H. is a woyane.
He always defends tigres and is not reasonable enough to accept that most tigres support the woyane regime. Instead of defending tigres it would have been wiser for him to call his ethnic brothers and sisters to rise up against the regime.
