In light of the ongoing ethnic cleansing campaign in Ethiopia against the Amhara, Oromo, Ogaden, Gambella, Afar and other Ethiopians, several Ethiopian media will come together on Saturday, April 14, at 1 PM, to propose a worldwide economic boycott campaign against the Woyanne junta.

It is a great idea.As it was mentioned it is important to carefully select the targets so that it does not affect the ordinary citizens.
Thus boycotts require actors, a target group, punitive instruments of a non-military fashion, and political objectives that determine the range and limitations of the boycotts. I think in our case, the actors are church groups and public opinion, civic organizations, and other Ethiopian associations,individuals who live abroad.It would be more effective also if national governments,businesses around the world, businesses in Ethiopia and international bodies are included.
Economic Boycott
1. usually works, it is a very effective weapon that is non-military
2. is important to take a decisive stand against the targets
3. helps to get to have our views known to a lot of people
Boycott is the same as sanction that governments and international organizations are doing against some countries. It should also be remembered that the African National Congress of South Africa used it very effectively and paralyzed the economic, political and military strength of the Apartheid government that led to its eventual down fall.

Brilliant idea. For this boycott to be effective I am suggesting the following points
1- Do not take people for granted. In other words, do not think the ordinary Ethiopian will have automatic sympathy to this cause.
This means you need to use the time you spend to develop strategies to reach these apathetic Ethiopians. What kind of things can be done to make the ordinary Ethiopian boycott the businesses? What alternatives are there, if possible? What kind of mass-informing is possible to reach them? What kind of media work can be done?
2- Some Ethiopians might feel a little afraid to go against the TPLF junta as we have allowed it to establish totalitarian system that mass spies on them. What strategies can be used to reach these people? We have to produce plausible reasons for them to avoid Weyane businesses. That way they can boycott them without having to confront Weyane upfront. This is cowardly but practical nonetheless.
Our goal should not be to measure people’s heroism, but to hurt Weyane business.
3- Please do NOT just declare boycott and leave it there. Develop strategies of propaganda work, tactical moves, and information gathering and dissemination methods.
These are points I have concerns about.

This idea of boycotting is not affecting you if you are an ordinary individual. Boycotting is targeting government specially those organizations that work undercover TPLF companies, businesses owned by TPLF members, Businesses owned by strong supporters of the government.
So if you are a regular business owner you can still work and make money. People who work for these companies or the public should also pay a little sacrifice. For instance if there is a call to boycott the transportation bus services it is ok for Ethiopians to walk to work.
From what I understand, you guys tried to boycott anyone who didn’t support you in the past. Like business owners in DC area who did not get involve in bashing Ethiopian government. You said to boycott their businesses and isolate them from public affairs. Isn’t that anti democracy if you are standing to punish those who don’t agree with your policies? This will divide people more than unit. Reason, people who are affiliated with the regime will be targeted. This will push them more to side with the regime. This is not democratic if it is going to be applied to harm even supporters of the regime.
People, if we have to deal with the regime in a rational way, whatever we do must protect the rights of others. Our hatred to the regime of the banda Meles will not just justify the violation of any person’s right even supporters.
If we have to liberate our people regardless ethnic or race or colur or religion, we have to base our objectives based universal truth and reason. Anything that is based on unfairness or biase will not get us anywhere.
It is good to take a flash back of the past 23 years, nothing has been achieved by the opposition, reason: simply they do not have strong political ideology that can bind people together and mobilize everyone.
For instance, boycotting Ethiopian airlines or anyother, is not very bad for the country. I do agree with general public disobedience like stopping work, taxis, at home by stay home public disobedience. However, boycotting airlines and others public services will only harm the company and Ethiopia in general.
When we do things; we must do cost and benefit analysis. We have to calculated the risks and the out comes of our actions. Actually I believe, if some of our people boycot Ethiopian airlines, the regime will use it to marginalize more the diaspora opposition.

Elias, I am not your usual admirer, but I give due credit to whom is due. I think you initiated this idea, and deserve credit for it. its timing ,parallel with the TPLF intensification campaign, more than anything else is perhaps why many are demanding action oriented strategy against a clique that has increasingly becomes sadistic in her dealing with the people. Partly we have to blame self for our silence has harmed us the most. The Orthodox Church is not an island but is part of the body of Christ.
I think we need to break from our tradition and persuade the Orthodox believers the need to establish contact with protestant faith and the Vatican. Ethnic cleansing is a serious accusation. As a non supporter of this regime, but a conscientious citizen, I am always stunned by comments from some people on this site. Blinded by hatred, fact free flamethrowers come here and post comments that contribute nothing for civil discourse.
Now, what does really mean economic boycotting? Do you really want no roads, bridges, dams, etc? What does that benefit you? Why do people let their hatred cloud their judgment? It is obvious to all rational people that alternative political view is essential for growth of a democracy in any society. But it should not come at the expense of civil unrest, war and instability especially for people like us who suffered tremendously. We have already had more than of our share for that. Those advocating violence, economic boycott (sinister at worst and empty rhetoric at best) may need to look at themselves and rethink what they are wishing for.
We lost irreplaceable generation of young and disciplined Ethiopians during Derg era. Our country has never recovered maybe will never be from that painful loss of her once promising and blossoming talent of youth. It is interesting to note that those who once participated in mass murders of those dear children of Ethiopia, they are now all of a sudden civil right advocates and patriots and they think that we have amnesia.
Your half-baked assertions of “the end justifies the means” has gone out of the way and has reached new lows. Only history will judge you for that. You went to Asmara to align yourself with Ethiopia’s number one enemy Shabia. When people learned about your motives and rejected you, you cried foul and kept injecting yourself into the country’s affairs. Luckily, your path has taken you only from one losing strategy to another one. When are you going to wake up and smell the coffee? Ethiopia does not need pseudo patriots who preach hatred and orchestrate violence remotely. Now, you are conspiring to orchestrate an economic boycotting? What else could be more unpatriotic than this indifference? I am ashamed knowing that there are people out there who are wishing a revolution like the Arab world. Let me state the obvious here: if they run revolutions, that is their choice and after all they have never been through in what we have been through. The last thing we need in our country is, going through another turmoil. I am sorry to inform you but the majority of Ethiopians do not want that anymore. Enemies of Ethiopia and Ethiopians come in many forms. Solomon Tibebu is another one but a typical form of opposing the opposition without openly defending the Government of the Racist TPLF junta.
He wants to be seen as a true patriot and Ethiopian, but he is a real TPLF member or supporter of it. He is warning not to try any kind of struggle. What an empty shell are you. Full of garbage that stinks. Just because you posted your comment do you think we are going to follow you?

What is your connection to the government?
If you are worried about the regular citizens how come you are not saying any word against the government?

The free and democratic countries you are living in, they have fought and died for it. I appreciate your aspiration towards freedom except that you just want others to fight for you while you are safely far away. You don’t know those people that you are painting as enemies of Ethiopia. I might have no problem if you call yourself a freedom fighter but it might not sit well with some when you denigrate everyone as enemies, etc., if they don’t agree with you. I am not Woyane and I am not a beneficiary of the current political system by any stretch. I am just expressing my thought.
You are wrong to think that you can scare people off by name-calling and projecting yourself as the true and the only freedom fighter. Being inclusive is, I believe politics 101. For me you sound like either just one of those out of touch opportunists who have conveniently ignored their roots or genuinely confused. I can only hope for the later. There are a lot of decent and intelligent people who are against the government. The difference between your approach and their’s is, they go against the believes of the individual not the individual himself.
I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you love your country. But let me give you a simple advice: The world has yet to discover a country that has been freed by people who were fighting from an ocean away.

I still have a problem with some of the sentences you are throwing again and again which makes people very suspicious of you.
for example here are some of them

Obviously you said it many times it is people like myself who are commenting on this site.do you really blame people who are against TPLF for the crimes it committed against the Amhara, Oromos, Somalis and others? do you even have any idea how much hate and plan to destroy the Amhara people for many years was conducted by TPLF rulers? They are throwing farmers from their lands and sell it to foreigners for almost nothing in order to help who? do you call all these things “factfree”? Are you kidding me? Even the top ex-leaders of TPLF are telling us all these facts as true.International journalist are condemning them for this. So you are telling us not to believe them?How so?

They know their enemies and their fight is the one that decides everything.but it is not new for their children who are living abroad to comment, condemn any miss happenings in their country. what we are doing is not “remotely” controlling the struggle in Ethiopia but if what we are saying helps them in their struggle it would be great. The Ethiopian students unions in America and Europe made a great contribution in the fight against feudalism many years ago.
So my suspicion and others too about your comments is that you said we are advocating violence and economic boycott. I do not advocate violence but i strongly support economic boycott to paralyze the TPLF financial advantage. But what is your suggestion? Don’t say anything util Ethiopians make a change? How will they bring about this change? You are even against Arab style uprising, so what are you suggesting? Do you think there will be a change after every one is in prison and dead? Is that you are asking us to do?or wait for another TPLF election? And who is going to win?
You might not be an enemy of Ethiopia, but your comment makes you one when you are insulting every one . If you are not happy with a couple of people’s suggestions don’t insult all of us.It would not be fair.
Regardless, I honestly believe that you don’t like Elias Kifle. TPLF does not like Elias Kifle and we all know why. But why don’t you like him? He is one of the good people that struggle for change in our country. I don’t know him personally but I like what he is doing now. Is he perfect who never makes mistakes? I don’t think so, he is a human like all of us.

Awetash we have evidence that can put Al Amoudi in prsion the rest of his life and also we can get back millions if not billions from Al Amoudi.Once TPLF gang removed from power you will not see Al Amoudi in Ethiopia ever unless he is in prsion or given death by local court in south Oromia.Al Amoudi will be brought to court infront of locals where over 200 local Oromos arrested and jailed and 5 persons still missing in actions.

If you live abroad,you can do these things:
1. do not use Ethiopian Airlines until Meles is dead or imprisoned.
2. do not invest (business, build a house, etc…) in Ethiopia, until the democratically elected goverment is installed.
3. do not send money or go yourself, if you can, untile the tyrant has submited.

I’m an Oromo. Although I/we have some points of disagreements with most Ethiopian Opposition groups, I still am willing to work together with Amhara and other opposition groups in matters that helps the failure of the Waayannee(in Afaan Oromo which means moron).
In fact, one of the Oromo website(http://oromoaffairs.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html) was the first to appeal boycotting the Ethiopian Airlines.
I’m pretty sure most Oromos will participate on this struggle.
