Deciphering Meles Zenawi’s hatred of Ethiopia

Meles Zenawi’s blatant hatred of Ethiopia is a puzzle that Ethiopian intellectual circles have in vain tried to {www:decipher}. While some propose the suggestion that the hatred betrays his commitment to his Eritrean side, others consider it as an expression of his ethnic racism. Still others remain baffled, unable as they are to understand how he revels in denigrating the object of his obsession, namely, state power. One thing is sure, however, they all agree on the idea that his overall policy and its day-to-day implementation make sense only from the vantage point of a project to ransack Ethiopia’s resources and leave the rest to the vultures of ethnic secessionism. Harsh dictators have ruled Ethiopia in the past, but all considered themselves as Ethiopians. What is new with Meles is his anti-Ethiopian stand and his open contempt for whatever is Ethiopian.

Yet, one important element liable to explain Meles’s hatred has been with us for quite some time. I have in mind the history of his family, which is a history marred by collaboration with the occupying Italian forces. Notably, his grandfather not only worked for the Italians, but he was also an appointee and an office holder. What this means is that Meles had to deal very early with this family shame, which according to testimonies brought scorn and isolation on his family.

Now, there are two ways of dealing with this kind of existential {www:predicament}. There is the positive way according to which the person affected by family disgrace tries to behave in such a way as to repair the fault. In the case of Meles, this would mean showing a renewed and active commitment to Ethiopia. This is the path of expiation, which requires a serious self-examination and, mostly, a great amount of courage. All the available and trustworthy testimonies about Meles agree on the fact that courage was and is not one of his virtues.

There remains the second path, which is negative and consonant with the lack of courage. It is the path of denial, that is, the denial of betrayal. In order to accomplish this metamorphosis, Meles has to demean Ethiopia and devalue all its accomplishments. The more he belittles Ethiopia, the more he weakens the gravity of the family betrayal, and the less guilty and stained he feels. There was no betrayal since what his family supposedly betrayed was just a trash.

The path of denial nurtures hatred for the simple reason that hatred is a self-defense, a counter to the feeling of being despised by others. When you feel that other people despise you, you react by developing an intense dislike for them as a way of protecting yourself. If you hate them, you get rid of all scruples and sensitivity and adopt the principle that all means are good to hurt them.

This hatred partially explains Meles’s rapid rise to the leadership of the TPLF. Who else could best express and incarnate the rage of the TPLF against the Ethiopian state and army but Meles, who in addition to sharing with other members the resentment against the marginalization of Tigray, had on him the personal scar of national betrayal. While anger motivated most members, Meles had a stronger torment: he was humiliated and could not rest until he humiliated the source of his own dishonor.

Meles’s characterization of the Ethiopian national flag as nothing but a trash, his persistence in reducing Ethiopian history to mere conquest and subordination, his delight in debunking Ethiopian heroes, his ritual of jailing pro-Ethiopian leaders and releasing them after forcing them to sign degrading letters, etc., are all part of his strategy to humiliate Ethiopia in order to feel good about himself. Add to this that his long-standing hatred has been reignited by his electoral defeat in 2005, which defeat he was quick to interpret as another attempt to humiliate him. Because the defeat revived an old wound, his crackdown on the opposition and protesters was bound to be brutal.

This is, then, an appeal to Meles urging him to psychoanalyze himself so as to become aware of the deep wound that constantly perverts his policy and contradicts his dream of becoming a great leader. As we all know, in matters of spiritual illness, awareness of the cause is an efficient cure so that the second path, the path of expiation through great deeds is still open to him. No amount of power can erase his shame so long as Meles continues to hang his rehabilitation on the trashing of Ethiopia. For the more he lowers Ethiopia, the less gratifying becomes his dominion. This contradiction is the reason why he wants more power, even though the discredit of the nation cheapens his power. In other words, the cure lies, not in the mistreatment of Ethiopia, but in its promotion, that is, in the commitment to overcome his shame through good works.

  1. Well, for Meles Ethiopia is a unique chicken that daily lays the magical Golden eggs, exclusively for him and him alone. He owns the unique chicken that lays the Golden eggs. From these point of view it may be said that Meles is pathologically in love with Ethiopia in a sick and sickening way and hate any one who either tries to take the chicken that lays the golden eggs or shares the Golden eggs themselves. He used to hate Ethiopia when it was laying the golden eggs for others but not for him.

For Meles, there is only one way not to repeat the faults of his grand father who was serving the fascist Italy by selling his country.Still now Meles has did more bad(giving land to Sudan, Mass killing, the Eritrea case…) and little good for Ethiopia but here and onwards he has no chance to do more bad because the Ethiopian people lost all the patience.

    I do agree with you Meles is motivated by hatred. But this baffles me too. I was surprised to find out his wife is amhara by father and mother. I am not trying to cover his sins. But am always baffled about this man. I do not even know why he struggle for 17 years because his policy does not show he had any good plan or good intention to help people. By looking at his track records, he appeared to be committed to Eritrea. However, his committment to Eritrea has not benefitted so far. It has neither helped Ethiopian. He has made Ethiopian an object of humiliation. If Eritrea has not benefitted so far, will it benefit in his absence? The man does see beyond his nose.

    He think he is immortal. He know he is the most hated man in Ethiopia. But what baffles again is why he had an election in 2005? Does he not know if there is free election? no one would elect him, not only in the rest of Ethiopia, even in his birth place in Adwa.

    I think Meles is by chance in Arat kilo he never had vision for anyone. He got Almouldi on the way and now he is doing business with Almouldi and cos.

    The fact that Meles is selling Ethiopia now is a testimony he has any substances about the country and people. All he wanted is to make money with Almouldi and become the richest man. Otherwise how would one go extra miles and even cross continents asking nations to takeover his country? Can an Ethiopian sell land for 100 years in the 21 century? There is no even such barbaric sell out of land for 50 years leave alone for 100 years anywhere in the world. So Meles took Tigreans for a ride, but in his mind he is committed to destroy Ethiopia.
    Meles assertion Ethiopian flag is cherq or a rag is a testimony how dishonours our country. He has also reduced our history to 100 years?

    I do agree Meles Zenawi has been abused, isolated, victimized by his community in adwa because of his grand father service to Italian as banda. I can feel for him how horrific it would had been in his childhood. I know in Tigray, leave alone someone who such betrayal of services to invaders, even minor things can isolate a family. I do understand how he has been victimized. The fact that Meles does not respect his comrades and now is a lonely person after chasing everyone or assassinating systematically is a testimony how he grew up.

    But if I was in his shoes, I would have done the right thing to my country. Reason, whatever his grand dad has done was not Meles fault. But Meles took that revenge on the whole Ethiopia? Why Meles does not think It was not either the Ethiopian fault, the fault was his grandfather’s fault. But reading the track record of Meles, like run away from war fronts leaving his comrades in fire field tells that he has actually repeated what his grandfather did.

    The fact that Meles aborted the Ethiopian victory on Eritrea and he took Ethiopia to Europe. He repeated his grandfather’s deed.

    In general, Meles is a victim of his gradfather and his own adwa community for isolating his family because of his gradfather. The bad thing now is the mistakes done by his grandfather is being repeated by himself. Isssays is more probably fond of Ethiopia than Meles. Meles hates Ethiopians and Ethiopia too much and he reached to the point he has to sell the land to Indian and Arabs instead of to Amhara? This is very serious issue.

    Having listened to Gremedhin, and to Herman Cohen, Meles knowingly or not, he has deep rooted hatred to amhara. His hatred to Ethiopia and amhara looks like exactly like some Eritreans who feel taking off their clothes when they speak amhara.

    In anycase, I think Meles is cannot repaired after now. He has chosen the wrong path from the beginning. He has decided to marginalize, isolate and exclude Ethiopians.He has decided to work with Arabs or Indians or any foreign than with amhara. It is better for him to give and sell the land to Arab than Amahara take and use it.

    I swear better everything is taken by amahra than by a complete foreigner who boasts taking the land without even seeing it. We were embarrassed when the Indian said they gave us and we took it. We did not even see it. He also said that he has obligation except paying that peanut to Meles.

    If Meles had any good intention, he could have followed a good path from the beginning. But Meles did not show any good intention from the beginning. As soon as he set his food in Addis, Meles worked so hard with Botro Gali to make sure Ethiopia will be landlocked. He forced EU, OAU,UN,… to recognize Eritrea as a nation and he endorsed the landlocking of Ethiopia.

    Meles must go before it is too late. He must understand that. The overpressed and oversuppressed Ethiopian sentiment will one day , sooner or later will boild over and I am affraid he might face the fate like Gadaffi. It is wise to slip away wisely before it is too late. I never come across any Ethiopian who love or have any slightes respect for Meles. Everyone I come cross tell me he is banda. Ethiopians even called him banda including myself without even knowing about his family history. He now have good reasons to call him banda. Reason, simply he the best banda Ethiopia ever had.

He himself someone who legalized selling of chidren in the name of adoption, and a man who ship his teenage girl citizens to become an Arab work and sex slaves in the 21 century. A man who sells the gambala province to 36 countries investors think he is better than Theodroes, Menelick and Mengistu?

    I have to tell to Meles, all of the past leaders are better than him including Mengistu. He is the worst. Mengistu has killed his own people,but he never sold chidren, never shipped Ethiopians to Arab. He never sold any national asset or any piece of land to any foreigner. Having his an educatead and never travelled, almost none experience, Mengistu has done better than the banda Meles who is busy selling the country piece by piece to any bidder. Down to wedi Zenawi, down to Wedi Afom, the two evil of the century.

    Given his 17 years as rebel, the most travelled Ethiopian leader, and nominally a PHD holder, he should have been the best leader Ethiopia ever had. Unfortunately, all that does not count, Meles the most disgraceful leader. We cannnot do anything about it. It is his fault. He could have done alot of work in the past 20 years even without sharing power with anyone. Ethiopians did not care who will be in Arat kilo, Ethiopian concern is Meles does nothing for Ethiopia except landlocking it, selling it, defiling it. He is a liability to Ethiopia.

    18 billion dollar stolen
    6 billion spent in the past 13 years to keep soldier on the non-existence border between shabia and our soldiers

    100 000 souls betrayed during the war with shabia.

    The selling of land to the world
    Legalizing 100 multibillion American companies who sell Ethiopian children from addis ababa?
    The shipping of Ethiopian teenage girls as young as 14 years old
    The going in and out of Somalia but never think or touch shabia?

    All the above are good reasons for all Ethiopians to unite and to say to Ato Meles we had you enough and now we want you to go. Finish, to expect Meles to change is jus floolishness.

    Meles is product of your kind of thinking (How can we make you understand that Eritrea does not belong to you; is’t fifty years enough) I have began to realize what the professor told Herman maybe true. I hate to use this word but i see why you were nicknamed (……)(you just can’t think out the box after fity years). As much i dislike meles you are making me think twice about him for treating you in the way he does. I don’t even know why i gave you and your kind the benefit of the doubt until this day , when i could have know this long time ago just from listing my forefathers when they used to say”this people let alone to rule over you is even harder to rule over them”. Don’t forget that you were 100 times worse than meles ,and i would imagine even harder for meles to forget after what happen to his people in 84 and nobody will understand your crocodile tears not even Herman and his like; they will play along until you decided for yourself to drink the water that is provided to you in plenty; and they are not stupid they know you very well you have the same intention as before and that is why i said you made meles what he is today.. I hate say thing in plain but you made me do it in the same way you made Meles who he is. I am tired of hearing you cry for the suffering of the poor Ethiopian people when we both know you could less about them and you are the one blame not meles.

    Whatever you say, Meles is the best leader Ethiopia ever had. This is the solid fact, and people living in Ethiopia know this. For the very few people living in diaspora, their mind has been brainwashed by the thousands of essays written by lossers everyday. If you believe what the likes of Dr.Messay, Prof.Alemayoh write everyday, you don’t have any option to see the reality. Your eye is blind, and your ear cannot hear. The fact is again, no one is to compare with Meles Zenawi. He is the greatest leader in Ethiopia regardless of what Haters say!

  7. Thank you for writing the article. Examining the psychology of leaders helps to explain their policies particularly when style of governance that they apply is unpopular and repressive. I would like to add some factors that we need to consider in analysing the psych of the leadership in Ethiopia. Several factors should be considered in examining the psychoanalysis of leaders in relations to policies and governance they follow.

    1. Past family/childhood experience
    The article partly explained the role of Melese’s childhood bad experience for his hatred of Ethiopia. It is true that his family may experience feeling of lack of trust and social isolation in marriage by local communities. While suckling his mother’s breast, Melese might have learned a lot about the greatness of Italians, how foolish Ethiopians were to wage the war to the most civilised white force and Eretria’s transformation during occupation that was destroyed after unification. These experiences might have bearing effects on his confidence, identity and attachment with others. These factors might have triggered his grander motive of controlling and sustaining power at any cost and using any despising method. That is why he doesn’t care selling Ethiopia and its sovereignty; he wouldn’t dare to sell Ethiopians as slaves to others nor does he care to give land to countries that support him stay in power.

    2. Ethnic racism
    Melese is not a Tigrean. Zenawi’s mother is a Tigrean but his father is from Gojam. Genetically speaking Amhara, Tigrea, Oromo and Eritreans are same people, but if we falsely assume they are, Melese is an unlucky hybrid from Amhara, Tigrea and Eretria. Taking his repressive actions on the people of Tigray and fighters that he slaughtered into perspective, he is neither ethino-centeric nor has inclination towards any ethnic group.

    3. Organization
    It is hard to imagine a good leader from an authoritarian political organization. TPLF’s founding principles are ethnic centred amalgamated with alien philosophies–socialism and Stalinism, and seceding constituents of the country—as solution. He is partly an expression of the TPLF: an authoritarian, deceptive and efficient killing matching comprising a few people at its core leadership. It is organised in such a way that the most cruel, hated and insensitive who lost their Ethiopian identity are placed in leadership position. This is because the leadership at the tip of the ladder selects such trogans to safe guard their power. The policies and repressive measures taken by Melese (and his associates) could be expressions of his fear (reprisal of misdeeds), enmity for any person/organisation with differing idea and paranoia of losing power.

    4. Ethiopian people
    We have to answer why such a megalomaniac leader and associates are allowed to destroy us the country. Do we really care for our country? Why do we fail to remove and tolerate such leaders to our destruction? It is the society that should shape, dictate and limit the power of government and leaders. But, we allowed the revers to happen. I think we have to take responsibility individually, then collectively to fix our limitation.

  8. You need to be more specific. Meles hates Amhara’s plain and simple He lives and dies to destroy the Amhara legacy. Meles has not backed away from expressing his deep hatred for Amahara. For example, during the 1997 election, he summoned some of the non- Amahar members of Kinjet party and told the, “you guys have to keep quiet and watch your backs. If something happens to you, no one will care for you. Amahara got a lot of wealth. It is our time to get wealthy at the expense of Amahara.” What Meles Zanawi wants to see is the annihilation of Amahara. I do not know what the definition of Ethiopia is. You may as well try to elaborate it a little further. What you and other so called intellectuals should try to do is find a way that can help remove TPLF criminals from our country. Leave the job of being psychologist or psychiatrist to people who are already in the profession. As a matter of fact, you were a dictator in chief of the department of philosophy when you were teaching in Addis Ababa University. A lot of people wonder if you could do differently if you were in the position of Meles Setanawi.

    Dear Damo,

    I completely agree that Melese hates Amhara more than others. Main reason is that Melese percieves Amhara as his main threat to his power. Thus, he has to distroy them first. This doesn’t mean he loves Tigrea or other regions which are effectively silenced by his cadres.
    I am not a phychologist. I never been a professor during Mengistu’s regim. I am younger than that generation.

  9. Dr. Messay Kebede states Meles hates Ethiopia; in fact, to the contrary, Meles loves Ethiopia more than he loves his wife Jezebel (Azeb) and his three children. Physically, Meles is married to Jezebel (Azeb), but spiritually he is married to Ethiopia; however, the marriage between the two is incompatible: Ethiopia is beautiful; Meles is ugly; Ethiopia is rich; Meles is a pauper; Ethiopia is from a royal family; Meles is from a disgraced and a traitor family. Even though Ethiopia wants to get out of Meles’ hand, Meles is telling Ethiopia: “I love you so much, cannot live without you, and I will die for you!”

    The main question is why has he failed to bring democracy to the country, and why is he afraid of democracy? The answer to this valid question is he is diffident; he hates competition; he hates open discussion and dialogue with his political opponents, and he knows he cannot debate them in public and win the debate, and if he cannot win the debate, he knows someone is coming to take his place; hence, he must silence those who cry for democracy, those who advocate for the rule of law, and those whom he thinks are simply whistle blowers. Those who cry for democracy, for the rule of law and for human rights violation are, mostly, the journalists, such as Elias Kifle, Eskinder Nega, Mesfin Negash, Abiye Teklemariam, Abebe Gellaw, Fasil Yenealem, and many others. He is, therefore, in an endless war with Ethiopian journalists as well as with foreign ones, and for how long he is gong to fight with the news media, only God knows who brought him to power to punish the Ethiopian people for their sins for killing their beloved Christian King, His Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie.

    Ere eyetestewale. If you look deep you will be surprised to find out that there were a lot of Amhara’s, Gurage’s and Oromos’s who had been paid Italian lire. We should focus on Meles only. Trying to connect the deed of his grandfather with Meles is kind of absurd to me. If Ermias S/Sellassie was raise an issue, nobidy would dare to mention that hid grandfather almost signed an agreement with the Italians. The same thing with Luel Asfawesen. Every Ethiopian need self reflection a kind of introspection Messay is doing;If we do we migh be able to see a fraction of or ,a tip of the iceburg in us , what we really are.Only GOD is aquinted with us ;He knows what takes place both in our concious and uncouncios mindFor this reason we sholud not dare to say this happen to so and so. I(ndoing so we are chaniging the tpopic of our disourse frompolits to personal and psychological.

    Ethiopian is faced with monumental problem.It is waiting her childreen to roll their sleves,get involved and devivese a plan to remove the tPLFclique.We need politcal resolution to the problem in hand.The discussion such as above won’t bring our people together.

  32. Dont make it sound like Meles does what he has been doing the last 20 years and earlier alone. No, he has thousands or even millions who help him do what he has been doing. From his close associates,to the soldiers,spies,cadres,and his foreign supporters, all are helping him commit all the crimes he has been commiting.
    Could that be that he was raised to the position of TPLF leader in 1989 by the likes of Sebhat Nega,Shabia and CIA because of that characteristics of him ?
