Woyanne postpones 'The Great Run' over security concerns

(The Associated Press) ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia: The Great Ethiopia Run has been postponed because of unspecified security concerns ahead of next month’s millennium celebrations.

The 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) race, which draws 30,000 runners and is organized by distance great Haile Gebrselassie, had been scheduled for Sept. 9 — three days before Ethiopia rings in the third millennium. The race was moved to November.

“It’s really, really very hard to accept,” Gebrselassie said Thursday. “But what can we do? Our top priority is the safety of the people, nothing else.”

‘ታላቁ ሩጫ’ ተላለፈ

ታላቁ ሩጫ ከተጀመረበት ጊዜ አንስቶ በርካታ የአዲስ አበባ ነዋሪዎች በሩጫው ላይ ሢሳተፉ ይስተዋሉ ነበር፡፡ በተለይ በ1999 ዓ.ም ሕዳር ወር ላይ በተደረገው ሩጫ ‹‹የታሰሩት ይፈቱ›› በሚል መሪ መፈክር ተሳታፊው ተቃውሞውን ያሰማበት ሆኖ ነበር ያለፈው፡፡ እንደ ዝግጅቱ አስተባባሪዎች ገለጻ  ታላቁ ሩጫ መደረግ የነበረበት ልክ በዓመቱ ቢሆንም የሚሌኒየሙን በዐል ድምቀት ይሰጠዋል በሚል በጳጉሜ 4  መዘጋጀቱን ከወራት በፊት አዘጋጆቹ አስታውቀው ነበር፡፡ በዚህም መሰረት ከ30 ሺህ በላይ ተሳታፊዎችን መዝግበው መሮጫ ቲሸርት አድለዋል፡፡  ለአንድ ተሳታፊም 40 የኢትዮጵያ ብር አስከፍለዋል፡፡ ለሚመለከተው የመንግስት አካል አስታውቀዋል፡፡ 

የታላቁ ሩጫ አዘጋጅ አትሌት ኀይሌ ገ/ስላሴ በዛሬው እለት ለጋዜጠኞች እንደገለጸው እስከትላንት ድረስ  የሚያውቀው ታላቁ ሩጫ አለመሰረዙን ነው፡፡  ነገር ግን በትናንትናው ለት በቃል እንደተነገረው ከጸጥታ ጋር በተያያዘ በመስቀል አደባባይ ይዘጋጅ የነበረው ታላቁ ሩጫ መጀመሪያ ይደረግበት ወደነበረው ሕዳር ወር ይተላለፍ መባሉን ነው፡፡ 

አያይዞ እንደገለጸው ለዚህ ዝግጅት ከኢትዮጵያ ውጭ ያሉ በርካታ አትሌቶች መጋበዛቸውንና በርካታ ኢትዮጵያውያን አትሌቶች ይሳተፉ እንደነበር ነው፡፡ 

መንግስት ጸጥታውን ለመጠበቅ በሚል ሚሌኒየሙን በማስመልከት የሚደረጉ ህዝብን ሊያሳትፉ ይችላሉ ተብለው የሚገመቱ ዝግጅቶችን (እነ አልሙዲ ከሚያዘጋጁት በስተቀር) በሙሉ እንዲሰረዝ አድርጉዋል፡፡  

አንዳንድ አስተያየት ሰጪዎች ስልጣን ላይ ያለ መንግስት የጸጥታ ችግር ካለበት ይቆጣጠራል እንጂ በፍርሃት አይሰርዝም ሲሉ ይናገራሉ፡፡  

ታላቁ ሩጫ በኢትዮጵያ ከተጀመረ አራት አመታት ያስቆጠረ ሲሆን መነሻውና መድረሻው መስቀል አደባባይ የሆነ 10 ኪ.ሜ ሩጫ ነው፡፡ በዚህ ሩጫ እስከ 30 ሺህ የሚገመት ሰው የሚሳተፍ ሲሆን ባለፈው በተደረገው ሩጫ ሕዝቡ የቅንጅት አመራሮች እንዲፈቱ የጠየቀበት፣ ለኢኃዲግ ያለውን ጥላቻ ያሳየበት ነበር፡፡

    Do not be surprised by this. Woyannes wanted to prempt any peaceful protest by postponing the great run.

    but, what the woyannes do not know is that the spirit of opposition is the spirit of kinijit which can not be quenched by postponing the great run. The spirit of freedom and democracy is deep in people’s hearts and as such can not be prevented.

  3. Woyanne is terribly afraid of Kinijit’s supporters in Addis.

    Woyanne is also smart. They have known that if they give an inch, things will be overwhelmingly different.

    So, they said it is better to avoid!!

    But how long can this postponing, canceling,…continue like this?
