Private Press Under Attack: Since January 22, four editors of privately owned newspapers were sent to prison by the Transitional Government (TG).  Earlier, several publishers and editors who were jailed had been released on bail and are on trial.

The TG has received international protest for its action. This second round of arrests by the TG is expected to bring more protest from Ethiopian political organization and the international community.

In an interview with ER, U.S. Secretary of State for African Affairs, George Moose says, regarding a question about the arrests of journalists, “… incidents of the kind you mention have caused concern about limitation on these free doms. We have discussed these concerns with the TGE.”

Editor and Publisher of Ethiopice Newspaper, Ato Tefera Asmara and Ato Eskinder Nega, are still in jail and have been tortured, according to their families who are not allowed to visit them anymore.
