EDITOR’S NOTE
FEBRUARY 1994
Despite the pleading by Ethiopians and the international community, the Transitional Government (TG) is still holding in detention five individuals who went to Addis Abeba in
December 1993 to participate in the Peace Conference. And last month the TG arrested four journalists who published privately owned newspapers. The editor and the publisher of
Ethiopice Newspaper are still languishing in jail. Their families are not allowed to visit them. It is reported that they have been tortured.
All these are senseless violations of civil rights which serve no purpose–including the TG’s. We, at ER, are very concerned with and saddend by the worsening human rights violations in Ethiopia by the TG. We call again for the immediate release of the detained conference participants and journalists.
