(Reuters) – Former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi died of wounds suffered on Thursday as fighters battling to complete an eight-month-old uprising against his rule overran his hometown Sirte, Libya’s interim rulers said.

His killing, which came swiftly after his capture near Sirte, is the most dramatic single development in the Arab Spring revolts that have unseated rulers in Egypt and Tunisia and threatened the grip on power of the leaders of Syria and Yemen.

“He (Gaddafi) was also hit in his head,” National Transitional Council official Abdel Majid Mlegta told Reuters. “There was a lot of firing against his group and he died.”

Mlegta told Reuters earlier that Gaddafi, who was in his late 60s, was captured and wounded in both legs at dawn on Thursday as he tried to flee in a convoy which NATO warplanes attacked. He said he had been taken away by an ambulance.

There was no independent confirmation of his remarks.

An anti-Gaddafi fighter said Gaddafi had been found hiding in a hole in the ground and had said “Don’t shoot, don’t shoot” to the men who grabbed him.

His capture followed within minutes of the fall of Sirte, a development that extinguished the last significant resistance by forces loyal to the deposed leader.

The capture of Sirte and the death of Gaddafi means Libya’s ruling NTC should now begin the task of forging a new democratic system which it had said it would get under way after the city, built as a showpiece for Gaddafi’s rule, had fallen.

Gaddafi, wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of ordering the killing of civilians, was toppled by rebel forces on August 23 after 42 years of one-man rule over the oil-producing North African state.

NTC fighters hoisted the red, black and green national flag above a large utilities building in the center of a newly-captured Sirte neighborhood and celebratory gunfire broke out among their ecstatic and relieved comrades.

Hundreds of NTC troops had surrounded the Mediterranean coastal town for weeks in a chaotic struggle that killed and wounded scores of the besieging forces and an unknown number of defenders.

NTC fighters said there were a large number of corpses inside the last redoubts of the Gaddafi troops. It was not immediately possible to verify that information.

  3. Of course when the end comes you would have no where to go. Gadaffi said, “don’t shoot, don’t shoot” when he was captured. In the end all of them are cowards. Meles would pay for the blood he spilled on the streets of Ethiopia. He may forget, but we won’t. Meles’s day is not as much as the days he had spent so far. The future is shorter than the past. Dictators have no good end. Let Meles the child killer face the same fate. The Tigray liberator shall face people’s justice.

    Meles will also face justice in a court of law sooner or later at least for the killings of close to 200 innocent civilians in 2005. Who did order the killings? Who did the killings!!! Who were those killed and what did they do to deserve being hunted down and shot like those animals which were let loose from the Ohio sanctuary this week? All these justified questions were not adequately answered and will never become justifiable. And the blood of those callously murdered in the streets of Addis during those fateful days is still crying to the Almighty for justice and justice in a court of law. They were killed not because they were Oromos in their majority but because they were Ethiopians!!! They were killed not because they were out there calling for an end of ‘Abyssinian colonialism’ but they were mowed down because they were Amharas, Oromos, Afars, Somalis, Sidamos, Haddiyans and from many other ethnic groups rolled into one. And their cry for justice will be amicably answered sooner of later. The International Court of Justice at The Hague has heard enough about it. It is a matter of time. We should all pray for a speedy demise of Al-Shabaab and yo’ll folks will know what I am talking about. Everyone will drop him like a hot potato.

    That is the result of people’s power, people’s anger. There is nothing, which can stop the will of the masses. No power as giant as the Soviet Union survived the fury of its population.
    It will be a lesson to those parrots who are singing to the tune of their masters and vagabond dictators in facing the same fate as Moussa Ibrahim, former spokesman for Gaddafi’s fallen government, who had been captured near Sirte. Puppy or the juvenile dogs such as BEN have now to think twice before you accuse honest journalists and put others in danger because of your hodam interest!

    1. Woeyane I and II – who, for over 70 years hijacked, distablized, unsettled, robbed, sold and killed the good Ethiopia. Assyria and its leaders, namely, Zenawi..

    2. Shabia (Egypt) and their top leaders who are the mastermind behind all evil toward both Ethiopia and Eritrea.

    3. Mengistu for the heavy, heavy damages he had caused and for treasonously fleeing.

    4. Al-Amoudi for controlling, raping, selling, corrupting a country that does not even belong to him.

    Today is one of those days where prayers have been answered in a dramatic way like the day Mengistu fled. Every day, less known enemies perish without people noticing them. Evil and wicked rulers and figures are the results of our own wrong doings. Arab Spring is more evil though which means the future is more bleak which also means the other side, from Ethiopia to America, isn’t doing right.

I greatly doubt, cause if we look back in history, i mean woyan’s history, I have heard, When Melese first joined the TPLF force he was sent to get some military training, and instead of going to the training post, he was hiding in asmara for a good 6 month, and then he returned to TPLF, as a punishment it is said, that the then leader Aregawi Berhe though wanted Melese dead for his desertion and lack of manhood, he was saved by aboy sebhat and the others, but as a punishment, they made him fetch water, carrying ensera on his shoulders for two weeks with the ladies, and all the soldiers were laughing at him, cause he was seen as coward. And another story is, when melese heres a gun shot, he always went under the table, so it is well known facts with in tplf that melse is the most scared coward member they have. Given that history, I know for sure, melese will be the first to board an airplane and fly like Mengistu as fast as he can before he faces courages men and woman who comes to take him down. The sissey that he is, will never be man enough to face justice in the eye, as Gudaffi did. I hope Melese has bought his ticket cause tick tack his days are numbered for sure.

  9. Gadafi should have surrendered the time when Tripoli was captured by the opposition, and things would have nice for him instead of dying like this one.

    In the case of Ethiopia, comparing Meles with Gadafi shows what you guys really think. The economic situation in Ethiopia is not of course not good and stable, but it is rediculous to remove Meles in Ethiopia like this, and it will put the situation in Ethiopia in a circle of endless war for the years to come which in my opinion is more destrctive. Any Ethiopian who wishes like this is not really fair!

    Dr. Aregawi berhe in his interview with ESAT television didn’t say that Meles was saved by Sbhat nega. The journalist Sisay Agena asked him about this subject, but he told the fact.But, some of what you said about him are correct about Meles (So, tell the fact as it is becuause
    Dr.aregawi has said it right).

    As to Gadafi, he has judged over himself. He had a lot of options, but he didn’t use them, and this become the end of his life.

  12. i wish this news would wake up the petty dictator from his drug and chat induced delusion of staying in power indefinitely. dictators are cowards who can not even take their own life to die with dignity. sadam and gadafi were found hiding in a hole and died asking for mercy that they never showed to their victims. that is where the petty dictator is heading. I do not wish death on any body including this monster. and i believe death is not a punishment for a cruel dictator like meles. he needs to face all the misery and sufferings that he inflicted on Ethiopian people. he needs to be starved in the memory of those people who have died because they were denied of food aid in retaliation for not showing enough support for the tribal regime. he needs to be held in solitary confinement in memory of Birtukan medeksa. he needs to be dragged out side and be beaten in memory of those who were tortured, stabbed and killed because they dared to exercise their basic human rights and finally, he needs to be denied any medical care and be left to die as he has done to professor asrat and so many other innocent people.

He was hiding in a “hole” and shouted “Do not shoot, do not shoot.” Think of the hundreds and thousands of innocent people whom he and his dogs massacred, tortured, imprisoned, raped, falsely accused, humiliated etc. and he begs for mercy. What a jerk!
    People are dancing and celebrating their freedom in the streets of Libya. Where are all those whom he and his spokesmen had been claiming that they love and support him?
    I won’t be surprised if melles begs for his life, too as if nothing happened. Melles was known for his creative excuses and pretext to avoid military engagements at the time in the bush. He is the real artist in intriguing, lies and money making though.
    Our dictator and the parasites’ Hench men serving his brutal greedy regime will face the same consequences! To all opportunists, now is the time to think twice about your own fate. The sooner the better! The time is not yet late to rehabilitate yourself!

However, as history showed us time and again no dictator is immune from eventual demise. As an Ethiopian proverb succinctly put it, and I quote” Yegeze Enje yesew Jegena Yelewem.” TPLF rats, repent and be part of the new Ethiopia. Your fate will not be different from the feudal, Derg, and the Gadhadfi regimes. No one gave you the mandate to kill and loot our country. You may kill for a while but at the need of the day you will leave dire consequences for your followers and supports. TPLF rats, you cannot remain for ever by pimping and bowing for the west. When the time comes, they will abandon and chase you as if you have done nothing for them. Repent mercenaries!!

Yes your days are numbered but you can take action. Listen to your people, negotiate, step down. Otherwise you are doomed, your fate is sealed.     Gadhafi was living a nightmare since February when the Libyan people said “enough” to his rule. He ruled Libya with an iron fist for 42 years. He became everything from leader, to general, president, king, and everything else. He controlled and manipulated the citizens by dividing them into clans, using tens of thousands of spies, thousands of people’s committees, police, and armed forces. He bought more than five thousand tanks, tens of thousands of missiles and artillery pieces, and hundreds of fighter and bombers aircrafts. He was a typical, dead end dictator that ruled like a barbarian and finally tried to destroy Libya. He even went as far as developing chemical weapons and started nuclear bomb program. But none of these saved him and his family. No amount of money, power, manipulation, and control over the everyday day life of Libyans saved him.

    I believe this is one of the last wakeup calls for dictators like Gadhafi. Yes, this is the last and final wakeup call for our own dictator, Mellesse Zenawi. As sad as it is, Ethiopians experienced twenty years of narcissist dictatorship as the Libyans. Mellesse divided Ethiopians into ethnic groups and segregated them into ethnic Bantustans. Mellesse created and inflamed inter ethnic infightings and violence. He planned, coordinated, and executed massive imprisonments, kidnappings, tortures, disappearances, political killings, and genocides in all parts of the country. He took the wealth of the Country directly from the treasury, government own industries, banks, and businesses. He even robbed money that belongs to opposition party members, businesses of citizens, and rich individuals. He made himself, his Woyane/TPLF mafia group, and his ethnic group rich and wealth at the expense of Ethiopians that don’t belong to his clan. Not only that, unlike Gadhafi, he committed the greatest treason and treachery when he fought, demanded, and coordinated the dismemberment of Ethiopia and giving up inherent Ethiopian territories. Mellesse did all these because of his consuming and vengeful hatred for Ethiopia and his belief that dividing Ethiopians will guarantee him permanent power and kingship of Ethiopia.

    It is time for the last and worst dictator, Mellesse to go and go very soon. This is the verdict of the Ethiopian people. Yes, no amount of money, spies, violent force, divisive programs, and manipulations will save Mellesse this time. Nothing will save him and his family now. The Ethiopian people have had enough of his lunatic, murderous, and narcissist programs for the Country and its citizens.

After being captured and just before being shot Gaddafi was asking as to what is going and what his capture is suppose to mean. Ethiopia never had a democratically elected government until 1991. Since then Ethiopians had gone out in their millions to freely elect their leaders not once but more than 3 times. Now the transformation of the whole country is in full swing. Jimma is going all the way to Djibouti not on foot or buses but on a modern train; The small merchant in Goba is going to be in Djibouti the next day to strike a business deal with his counterpart in Djibouti not on a horseback but in a first class train ride. An Amhara Merchant and another one from Tigray will be in Tadjourah in less than 24 hours if the wish by train to discuss deals with their representatives in that fateful Red Sea port. That seaside port used to be the main exit point during the slave trade. This is what you call transformation from the ground up. Old traditional trading stations like Awash, Adama (Nazret), Mieso, Shinele and Dewele will boom to become bustling commercials centers like Hsinchu, Shenzhen, Santiago and Bangkok. Dire Dawa will confuse people if it is Seoul, Guangzhou or downtown Chicago. Todjourah in Djibouti will transform from a sleepy seaside town into a teeming port city busy in transitioning goods manufactured in Tigray and Amhara regions to and from the world. The genie that bedeviled our people for more than 2,000 years has been taken out and smothered into smithereens once and for all. So you all miscreants holed up in some joints here in the Diaspora!!! Don’t even dream about comparing PM Meles with Gadhafi and his regime with the current government of Ethiopia. Kikikikiki… I think that you have lost any sense of rationality due to the great shock from Gaddafi’s fate. In fact Gaddafi was more human and more distributive of welfare and other resources to his people and even to African Beggars.

    Meles is light years away behind Gaddafi in that sense. So please don’t LIE BIG! Have you ever heard of Libyans starving and begging the planet year after year while having abundant fertile agricultural farmlands being distributed to alien looters by Meles Zenawi running, “the government of the people, for the people and by the people?     Gaddafi made exactly similar statements when the uprising just stated by loudly and publicly declaring that all Libyans love him from the bottom of their hearts and will fight and die for him to the end.

    Look at the truth and what has happened to him now in practice when the people of Libya showed their hate and outrage, chased him all around the country day and night and instead of loving and dying for him as he stated captured and slaughtered him in public like a wild pig.

    In that sense your manipulative propaganda comment clearly fits with Gaddafi’s manipulative propaganda statements indicating the fact that the fate of tyrant Gaddafi is exactly the fate of tyrant Meles.

    How dare you compare the Ghadafi regime to the Ethiopian Federal Government? How dare you? Listen! I have said before on this very website about my opinion. It is unabashed, unadulterated and in no way government influenced. I am not a card member of any political organization and therefore you have no right to call me a Woyane. I am a red-blooded Ethiopian at birth who hails from Tigray and you will never be able to change that. I have made my disagreement on the imprisonment of Ato Eskinder very clear. I have read several of his articles on this and other websites. They were just opinion and could not be classified as calls for uprising or being an instrument of terrorists. I feel the same was about various writing by the very editor of this website. If he has personal problem with PM Meles, that is between them two adults and it will not up to me to settle their differences. As a man of God and a loving father I believe both possess immense talents and neither is out there for personal benefits. That is why I continue to let my opinion known on this website even though he will not see me eye to eye. But the development I have mentioned in my previous comment are already or about to be happening. These road and railway projects had been rattling around my head for a long a time. As a trained engineer, it has been in my dreams whiling toiling in a country and for a company far, far away from where I was born. They are any engineer’s dream. Some of these projects including the millennium dam were at least studied during the Haile Selassie regime. The system and corruptions the regime depended on did not allow them to materialize. But they are happening now. What more can I ask? Ethiopia has set up a date with Tadjourah!!! Jimma has opted to take a train to Jabaal Al-Arafaat through Djibouti!!! Bale’s Sheik Hussain has an appointment with business clients on Menelik Boulevard in Djibouti. And they do not want to be disturbed by the empty noise of miscreants like you.     About your talk regarding an alleged famine, if you and I go to court on that one you will lose hands down for 1) lack of evidence and 2) inadmissible case in a court of law. It will be like accusing Obama for the loss of income by the Texas farmers this year and the dust bowl that is wreaking havoc on parts of that state. But he will be commended for the assistance he provided for the affected families. And that is what is happening in the Southern part of Ethiopia as we speak.

If you are a real Ethiopian, I challenge you to open your eye and see, open your ears and listen to what is going on around you. Go from north to south and east to west around the Country and talk to Ethiopians of every region. Observe the abject poverty, rampant corruptions, barbaric misrules, and the magnitude and types of diseases. See the tens of millions of Ethiopians who can’t even afford one meal a day and a place they can call home. You will see that Ethiopia has become hell for the ninety nine percent of its citizens and yet heaven on earth for the privileged few Woyane/TPLF thugs.

    You mentioned about the “development”, “new roads”, planned “railway lines” and “power stations”. The “development” you are talking about is no more than imaginary and delusional development. It is not real, it is not tangible, and it is not substantive. This “development” cannot be translated into “loaf of breads” a days to the millions of Ethiopians. As a “trained engineer” you should also be talking about the power stations that produce energy only half of the time and 50% below capacity, railways lines that did not materialize even after fifteen years of planning, and roads and bridges that needs major repair and modifications after only one or two years of service. Above all “roads” and “bridges” that go nowhere.

    Ethiopians will never, ever forget the treasons and treacheries the Woyane/TPLF/Mellesse thugs committed and still commit against Ethiopia and Ethiopians. It was the Woyane/TPLF/Mellesse thugs that fought the Ethiopian army in Eritrea when it was fighting for the territorial integrity of Ethiopia.     The so called Ethiopian government also committed and continued to commit crimes of torture, kidnapping, murder, and imprisonment of nationals. It planned, encouraged, executed, and coordinated ethnic cleansing, ethnic violence, and wars between and on Ethiopians. They created ethnic dictatorship that made one small ethnic group to become the master of all Ethiopians. Yes, the country and its people have become colonies and slaves of the Woyane/TPLF junta. They have made every military command, corps, and divisions to be commanded only by TPLF Tigreans. Every security office from the national office to states, zones, and cities are controlled by Tigreans from Adwa. Every critical function of ministry departments, embassies, and government agencies are led by only Woyane/TPLF thugs from Tigreay. We can say the same thing about the economy which is controlled by Woyane/TPLF and its thugs.

    The Woyane/TPLF/Mellesse thugs have been manipulating and cheating every ethnic group many times over by hiring few low life puppets from amongst these pseudo parties. The hired slaves, a.k.a. EPRDF party members from other ethnic groups are dogs that lick Mellesse’s behind. These low lives don’t have any self respect and self worth. They are used, abused, and then trashed as pieces of garbage. Mellesse, as a typical prostitute, uses these worthless individuals and discard them at will.
