(Bizjournal) — Some timely lobbying seems to be sparing a Washington DC gasoline {www:mogul} from a drive to dismantle his empire.
Aggressive lobbying efforts on behalf of the Ethiopian-born Joe Mamo — whose company Capitol Petroleum Group owns, operates or supplies 164 stations in the Washington area — appears to have staved off legislation by the D.C. Council to loosen his grip on the local gasoline market, The Washington Post reported.
Councilwoman Mary Cheh’s antitrust legislation, which banned wholesalers from also owning retail service stations, was approved by the council’s Committee on Government Operations and the Environment in July but has not generated majority support, according to The Washington Post, due to an {www:onslaught} of support for Mamo from politicians and organizations.
Councilman Vincent Orange has received $1,500 from Mamo, and the Keep Hope Alive Political Action Committee, which is affiliated with the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow Push Coalition, has received $25,000. Both Orange and Jackson have urged defeat of Cheh’s bill, The Post reported.
Joe Mamo is the son of famed Ethiopian businessman Mamo Kacha who dominated the Ethiopian transportation business in the 1970s and 80s.

I am glad that this son of a hard working Ethiopian transportation mogul was able to keep his turf. He has worked very hard like his dad and he deserves to keep it. I hope that he becomes a brand name in the oil industry like “atobisi mamo cacha. I also hope he helps this poor and mostly unedcuated DC taxi drivers who have no know how of lobbying and who are about to be kicked out by the same DC legislature using his lobbying tactics. I am sure he knows that like his dad he has responsibility to help the helpless. If he doesn’t I don’t blame him because he lived most of his life in the land of me me me only.

I am happy for him as an immigant individual who came to this country like others who worked hard and penetrate the Europian American cirle.I do have a question though.I came to think that.He has all the wealth and prestage this city (DC).what did he do for his community?I dont remember his name contributing for any organization like ECC. Others like him helping the their community by struching their hands to churches and the communities at large.A gain,I wonder if he does contribute for the peaple of that country who are silently strved.I remember his Dad was one of the true citzen of that Country who has contrbuted a lot specialy regarding roads. It is good to follow his father’s foot.for example,the ethipian commnity center has been around for 33 years.It is in verg of coolapsing due to fanacial strain..He can support the community who has helped so mony refugees in the early 80th,90th Mr M arrived in this country a round that time.I hope he can read this message and streach his hands to ECC.and to those churches who are crying for help.like they say ,Money is not everything.
