U.S. Gov’t says Meles regime is behind Addis Ababa bomings

Ethiopian Review and other media have been blaming Ethiopia’s khat-addicted dictator and his Woyanne junta for the so-called “terrorist bombings” in Addis Ababa (read here). From its jungle days, Woyanne is known for exploding bombs in civilians areas and blaming the action on its opponents. Now the U.S. diplomats have confirmed Ethiopian Review’s claim that the Addis Ababa bombings were carried out by the Meles regime’s security forces. Ambassador Vicki Huddleston wrote in a secret memo:

¶1. (S) SUMMARY A series of explosions were reported in Addis
Ababa on September 16, killing three individuals. The GoE
announced that the bombs went off while being assembled, and
that the three dead were terrorists from the outlawed Oromo
Liberation Front (OLF) with links to the Oromo National
Congress (ONC). An embassy source, as well as clandestine
reporting, suggests that the bombing may have in fact been
the work of GoE security forces. END SUMMARY

¶2. (U) On September 16, three bomb explosions were reported
in the Kara Kore area of Addis Ababa. The explosions were
heard at 4:45 a.m., 7:00 a.m., and 10:00 a.m. The National
Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), together with the
Federal Police Anti-terror Task Force later reported that the
bombs were “part of a coordinated terror attack by the OLF
and Sha’abiya (Eritrea) aimed at disrupting democratic
development.” The NISS said that the intended terror plot
had failed and the bombs had mistakenly gone off while the
suspects were preparing them while hiding out at an illegally
built house. Two of the suspects died immediately, while
another died on the way to the hospital. One other is in
critical condition. The police task force reported having
others in custody related to the plot and that evidence shows
the terrorists had ties to Oromo groups – the Mecha and
Tulema Association (MTA) and the ONC. They also said that
the bombs used contained parts sourced from Eritrea and were
consistent with bombs used in previous terrorist attacks.

¶3. (S) On September 20, Dr. Merera Gudina (strictly protect),
the former leader of the ONC (and a typically reliable
information source), contacted Post to report that the
deceased had not died not while constructing a bomb, but
rather at the hands of GoE cadres. Dr. Merera said that the
men had been picked up by police a week prior, kept in
detention and tortured. He said police then left the men in
a house and detonated explosives nearby, killing 3 of them.
He did not indicate whether the men were ONC or OLF
affiliated.

¶4. (S) Clandestine reporting indicates that the bombs did not
explode inside the structure, but rather appear to have been
placed outside and detonated.

    The cruel and heartless TPLF then sent its police to investigate THE CRIME THEY THEMSELVES HAVE COMMITTED. AND OFCOURSE THEIR INVESTIGATION CAME TO NOTHING.

    This has been a common occurrence in the early days of the TPLF, AND HAS CONTINUED TO THIS DAY.

    Federal Prosecutor Files Charges Against Terror Suspects

    Addis Ababa, September 7, 2011 (Addis Ababa) – The Federal Prosecutor has filed charges against persons suspected of terrorists act including two Swedish journalists who were arrested during a fight with Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), the Ministry of Justice said.

    In a news conference he gave here on Wednesday, State Minister for Dispute Affairs with the Ministry of Justice, Berhanu Tsegaye said the Federal Prosecutor filed charges against the suspects under the file, Elias Kifle.

    It has also filed suit against two Swedish journalists who were arrested during the fight with ONLF under the file, Abdiwoli Mohammed Ismael, he added.

    According to Berhanu, the Federal Prosecutor has charged the suspects of attempting to dismantle the constitutional system through organized armed group.

    He said the Prosecutor charged the members of the group operating under the mastermind, Elias Kifle, in collaboration with five organizations which are regarded as terrorist groups, and the Government of Eritrea with attempting to commit terror acts.

    Berhanu said the suspects, who were organized in underground terror group in 2003 EC, were also charged with an attempt of destroying electricity and telephone as well as fiber networks existing in Addis Ababa City, Dessie, Woldiya, Harar, Hawassa, Assosa, Wollega, Jijiga and Gondar by collaborating with foreign terror groups.

    The suspects include Elias Kifle, Zerihun Gebreegziabher Tadesse, Woubshet Taye Abebe and Hirut Kifle Woldeyes.

    According to Berhanu, the defendants were accused on four counts of charges.

    The charges include involving in terror act, commit terrorist act and using fraudulent money for terror act and extending financial support to terrorist acts.

    Berhanu said the suspects, Elias Kifle and Hirut Kifle, were also found guilty of committing terror acts previously.

    He said the Federal Prosecutor has also filed charges on members of ONLF and two Swedish journalists arrested during the fight with ONLF.

    The Swedish journalists were charged with advancing and supporting ONLF’s subversive acts and participating in terrorist organization and violating the sovereignty of the nation.

    According to the State Minister, the government has concrete evidence for the charges.

    The Federal High Court, which received the suits, has adjourned the case for October 17 2011.

Talk to your neighbors, friends, and work colleague’s, local papers, local trade unions, etc… Be creative about it. So that when the day comes that, we do not get surprised and start from the scratch..
    By the way, their agents and dogs are trying to create systematic chaos and divisions between Ethiopians living outside of the country. They are buying people by offering pieces of land or licenses’ for business and the like. Expose and confront the locally known agents in your area. Go to meetings that are managed from them instead of boycotting and distancing away. My uncle tells me that, that was what and how (AGENTS OF WOYANE) they did in the old days where they involved themselves in different Ethiopian organizations, sabotaged, and destroyed the ideal of young dynamic Ethiopians. These agents ended up as ministers and bureaucrats of today’s Woyane. So go to their meetings and confront them. Tell them that you know who they are. They are used in bullying and arrogance towards our people but in reality they are cowards, treachery and sneaky.

  35. The recent claim by Woyane that the OLF with the help of Ertrea were plannign to bomb OAU meeting was not taken serioulsy by OAU and most of its members. The only group that got mislead by the information was IGAD and the so called Somalia monitoring group. This fabricated bomb plan was the last tool they are trying to use for the security coucil to put severe economic sanction on Eritrea.
    Eritrea denied the allegation saying that ” it is not Eritrean or Shabia culture to bomb civilian sites” and the Oromo Liberation Front opposed it strongly and asked the UN and security group to be given a chance to defend them selves.

    I feel sorry for IGAD for believing what Woyane told them and joined woyane in asking UN securigy council to put more sanction on Eritrea, but OAU were smart enought to ignore this allegation agains OLF and Eritrea.

    Now the whole world knows that Woyane are liars. The US knew woyanes are not trust worthy all along.

  36. Piece by piece the clue is falling in its rightful place that relationship between Weyane and the U.S government has been at odds for some time now. This is so due to in part Melee’s insistence to go along with his plan to implement the 100 years TPLF domination of Ethiopian politics, a move contrary, to the opinion of U.S diplomats. The main concern of the U.S seems to be the stability of the country, and the security role that the regime might play from such stability. The U.S might have been convinced her security interest will be served more provided there is stability and peace in the country. The ongoing discussion shows the U.S at various points attempt to advice the belligerent regime to introduce democratization process, open a political space for the oppositions, as well as liberalize the economy. However, the melees regime seems to be opted for TPLF domination of Ethiopian politics rather than introducing sweeping political reforms.
    Melese now eye’s China as his model. Whether we like it or not Melese is pursuing a one party domination and an economy completely run by his EFORT. Mean while, his switching sides with China puts him at odd with the west. The government made it clear in one of the cables that it preferred to work with other governments such as Israel, Russia, and China , what it says, who don’t demand conditions as the U.S does.
    That is why these cables seem to be reporting about the declining relationship between the two parties. Due to this developments, Ethiopians need to think soberly for any eventuality.
    It is clear by now we can’t rely in weyane to defend the country. It will do so only as long as it is left to control the political domination and the economy. However, there will come a time if Ethiopians, say decide to rise in arms against its rule, Melese will play many of his reserve deck of cards he has in store. I think at this time there should not be any question over the necessity of armed struggle against we-yane.But who is to lead us to such undertaking is obviously an open question?
    On the outset G-7 need to be discarded. This organization does not have well round strategy for the country.Incidently, I would say also, the name G-7 itself is perhaps the first organization in the history of the country that does not name Ethiopia, or attach itself to democratic cause. But the main problem I have with G-7 is that for too long it set its one foot at Asmara. If this is not enough, it just announced that it chose to work with two other secessionist organizations in the country, there by dividing the Ethiopian opostion.Simply said G-7 is an opportunist organization, who appears to be driven by vendeta, attempting to reach Arat Kilo via leapfrog with everyone and any one.
    Now, in the light of this, more than ever, Ethiopians need to be alarmed about their country’s future. More than anything else they need to overcome the existing conspiracy within. In the past EPPF leadership sought help with Asmara, and turned out to be disaster. Why is it then G-7 want us to believe that we need Asmara’s help in order to be free from weyane? Now the answer is very clear.
    I need not to waste my time here about the evil nature of weyane.That it incites violence between Christians and Muslims as in Jima and Wollo is clear.That it burns and blunders even historical sights:Churches.It detonates bombes in the capital,and blame it on others. That Ethiopian people are put under weyane surveillance, there by subjecting them for demoralization
    There is a third option; we the people, before it is too late, need to train our own army that will stand on the sole support of Ethiopians and friends of Ethiopa.What we need with Eretria is respect for one another and common desire to co-exist. We understand Eretria is independent country; we need good neighborly relationship with her. That means Eretria need to respect Ethiopia’s desire to get rid of weyane on her own. We need to use foreign and domestic soil to train and transport our people to the home turf. If approached there are many outside sources that can help Ethiopia to train Special Forces well as help with logistics. We need to think in this line; we need not to sit on the fence for ever and let the extremists get upper hand. What is more the U.S is waiting on the side line to switch side if need be. We need to use this opportunity now or else loose it for the extremists.

    So what does the current leak confirm? It confirms all the malicious lies and propaganda that the TPLF was spreading since 1991 are entirely false. Take for example the Bedeno case. TPLF said OLF perpetrated the massacre. OLF as a docile organization failed to vehemently deny the accusation, but the truth is Tigre-TPLF committed the crime with out any hesitation. The aim was to incite Amhara against OLF and Oromo. Thus we Oromo and Amhara people if we really don’t want to be irrelevant in future , we have to solve our differences and work to remove this cancer. We have to ask ourselves how a hopeless minority tribe from Ethiopian desert (a region that is not able to buy chalk for its school children) can dictate the life of close to 80 million Ethiopians.

  41. If I were Meles, I would blast two bombs in Mekelle so that people would trust me that it is the work of the wushet terrorists OLF and Eritrea and Debebe Eshetu and Reiot or Abba Merkoriso…. But I think the Dehninets have not the stomach to play with the life of Mekelle people as it is not as easy as planting it in a mini bus full of Amharas and Oromos and Southerners. Dear Truth, i hear your concern, but right now is the time that you really need to reconsider what you are saying, OLF has long ago reconsidered their separatist issues and just want freedom, and equality for the Oromo people which Meles is not offering right now! with ONLF, if you see and hear what they(weyane) do in the ogaden area, you wouldn’t blame them for not wanting to be part of Ethiopia, one eth somali i met has asked me a very difficult question once, he said you guys went crazy over 200 people who got killed in broad day light in Addis and the whole world knew, but us when we get killed and tortured day and night in the Somali region, the people in central and northern ethiopia didn’t care, so when you say ogaden is part of Ethiopia did you mean just the land you didn’t care about us? well i ask you to answer that question before you discard ONLF, i believe if we work together and manage to overcome the inequalities in our system, there is no reason why we cannot discuss a better unity than disintegration, but it should be through discussion and G-7 for better or worse is doing just that and we should give them the benefit of the doubt. as for basing in Asmara i hope by now they have learned their lessons and will hopefully will make their operations out of somewhere else.
