Azeb Mesfin mother of corruptionAzeb Mesfin, the wife of Ethiopia’s tyrant Meles Zenawi, is building a new residence inside the Menelik Palace compound at the cost of 82 million birr, FORTUNE, an Addis Ababa-based business journal reports.

Azeb, who is known in Ethiopia as the mother of corruption, is building the residence with public funds, while according to the U.N. 2 million Ethiopian are in need of emergency food assistance.

FORTUNE is reporting that taxpayers are paying for the construction of the extremely lavish residence for the Prime Minister and his wife inside the Menelik Palace compound at Arat Kilo. The regime will be spending close to 82 million Birr on this residence, which will incorporate a swimming pool and tennis court as well as guest houses.

A committee of three has been established to follow the construction of the residence. It comprises Azeb Mesfin, an MP and resident of the compound for close to 20 years now; Muktar Khadir, head of the Office of the Prime Minister and secretary of the cabinet; and an individual who is currently following up the landscape work inside the palace.

    know they might run away some day but when they do at least we need to have something back and this is

    I am ok with that. I thought u gonne say they are building it some other country which at the end of the day it will be theirs. But if it is built inside in our own palace, they will leave their for the next one hopefully the person that we will elect live in it proudly.
    So it is a good thing that they will not take unless it is moveable and take when they are kicked out, and that is not the case in any part of the world yet.

  8. Prime Minister Meles and his wife Azeb Mesfin have the right to build their homes in Ethiopia. No one has the right to say they could not. If they stole the money then prove it in the court of law, otherwise leave them alone and let them live their lives. We all know W/ro Azeb Mesfin said she does not have lots of money about four years ago, how they acquired this much money is questionable, but it has to be proven and shown for the public before we accuse them of corruption or embazzelment. In Ethiopia there is justice, like the law in the US in Ethiopia one has to be proven guilty to be accused of wrong doing.

They [the dictators] are spending money for their private needs while the population of the capital is eating food from trash cans. Any way it is a matter of time.   12. It looks like Meles is digging in. After finishing his term Meles will retire from the PM post but will remain chairman of the EPRDF. Azeb Mesfin will be the first African female leader(if you don’t count the small nation of Liberia).She will probably serve for at least two terms.At the end of Azeb’s two term her well educated and eloquent daughter will be ready to serve her country. I predict at this time, to be exact 15 to 20 years from now, Ethiopia will be more like Egypt of today, relatively prosperous with lots of educated and wired youth, and then we will have change of government through revolution just like in Egypt of today.

  27. This is an answer to those that are angry with my statement, just come down and think about it. If you were accused of looting wouldn’t you need to receive justice? That’s exactly what we have to do for everyone even if those people are Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and his lovely wife First Lady Azeb Mesfun. While it looks bad from far, but these people have done so much for Ethiopia.

    We have to establish a new law that will work for everyone regardless of ethnic background. Ethiopia must be a lawful country for all. Just because someone accused these great Ethiopians who slept in the jungle and ate leaves for many years, while struggling to free the Ethiopian people from Derg’s military junta, and we have to hang them.

    Let’s not forge the fact that they did do good things for the country, including making Ethiopia richer than she was. When Meles arrived in Addis Abeba, the average Ethiopian income was about $50 (GNP) a year. Twenty years later the average Ethiopian makes more than $170 a year, and we are better than the countries around. Our budget grew over 500% Addis Abeba grew by 60% with new homes that look like mansions, we have internationally recognized several hotels.

    We also increased the income of Ethiopian Airline (the pride of Africa) business by 1000%. We created and finished many major national projects, such as GG-I, GG-II, now we are on the verge of finishing GG-III, increasing Ethiopia’s power supply by 20,000 MW. Un-used millions of hectare of Ethiopia’s farm land that was getting beat up by sun and wind daily is now producing millions of tonnes of crops and oil seeds.

    Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and First lady Azeb Mesfun do not deserve this kind of treatment? Because they lead Ethiopia, we are better than we have ever been. We increased Ethiopia’s business transaction by so much more than any time in Ethiopia’s history. To be fair, this is only the tip of the iceberg, there have been many developments that took root while Prime Minister Meles is the leader. So, let’s not be driven by hate, but judge people on the basis of their contribution to Ethiopia.

    There fore, questioning the unreasonableness of constructing $82 million edifice and raising questions about the lose of 10,000 tons of Ethiopian coffee is not crime. By the way what sort of law and justice, comparable to that of U.S are you talking about when you say there is justice in Ethiopia? This story shows how the melse azeb team stops at nothing to rob the wealth of the people. for some it might look, just an innocent mansion being built, after all, we might say, a country such as Ethiopia needs quite a significant presidential palace, as we have quite a lot of states men come to visit and won’t be a bad idea to have one. But the issue is not if we should build one or not, it is the timing and if it should be built by this group of people, I will explain why, this is just another way of how Azeb is just robbing the country in broad day light. Azeb Mesfin is building a mansion for 82 million birr, paid by the Ethiopian people. And the interesting part is, one of her construction company is going to take the contract and get paid 82 million dollars. And I would assume one of her furniture company would furnish this lavish mansion and make another 20 million dollars, after all this is a presidential palace and needs to be furnished accordingly. Looking at Azeb’s test of shopping list, I wouldn’t be surprised if she does not feel it with nothing but the best. Besides furnishing of course this would need some art for decor, and i am quite sure one of Azeb’s gallery would be willing to sell some of the fine arts she owns for a nice modest fee of say another 10 million birr. of course this mansion would require gardening and planting. I am sure Azeb’s landscape company would win the contract and do it for a nice round figure of 3 million birr this of course includes yearly upkeep of the landscape. Of course just like any big mansion this would need a good security camera and of that sort, I am quite confident Azeb’s security company can lend a hand to not only install the best of cameras but also to provide security system for the mansion for a nice yearly fee of 1 million birr a year. Last but not least this mansion would be useless with out having proper kitchen and cleaning crew, and that of course would be supplied by Azebs Kettering company and cleaning service for a nice round yearly price of 5 million birr. So guys what we are just witnessing is, a simple system of how Azeb just gets richer from this ONE mansion that she is building. While we are focusing on the first down payment of 82 million birr, we are forgetting, the other 100 million birr she will bleed the poor Ethiopians to pay for all the other part needed to have this house functioning. The best part of all this is, She gets to live in it free of charge. This is just one example of how greedy this people are and just not enough to how much they can steal, I wonder where they plan to hide all this money and do with it? it is truly absurd and sad for a human being to be so greedy, specially for wezero Azeb coming from such a modest up bringing of family of goat herding in welkait. it is almost like this physics rule i learned when i was in 9th grade, an object in motion will continue to be in motion unless an external force is applied to stop it.     Does not the above statement contradict all that Melese stands for? Many TPLF members themselves will be laughing about this naïve stament.Look, I may agree to the notion that the ordinary rank and file members of TPLFITes did sacrificed with their life. I mean the ordinary fighters slept in “CUSHIK”,as many Shabians,EPRA,EDU fighters did.However,when it comes to TPLF leadership in particular Melese,there is no record to show he has participated in actual combat.Melese make sure he always stays one step ahead of the game: he made sure the survival of his life is first priority. I find it hard to accept your view that Melese has paid a sacrifice comparable to ordinary fighters.TPLF leaders, of whom Melese is the leading figure, often stayed 50 miles behind front line in their safety liberated areas while the ranking members paid dearly in their lives.

  41. I do not understand why people pick out a word or a sentence to fight me over, even though I do not mind. But look at the whole package and judge it for yourself based on the sentiment of the whole article. All I am saying is Ethiopia has gotten better under Meles Zenawi. That does not mean we have not had or do not have problems, we are Africans and we have a long way to go to be able to enjoy the same rights and privilages developed nations do. But that does not come by itself, everyone has to work hard instead of standing and criticizing Meles for everything the people do not have.

    Vast majorty of Ethiopians are not advancing with their lives because we are fighting against each other while we should all focus to help the greater majority we are criticizing a specific minority. To tell you the truth, Ethiopia has moved forward, we do not listen to nay sayers anymore, if you want to progress then you are welcome to join Ethiopia under the EPDRF, if you do not like the government and have a problem, then leave Ethiopia and wait untill we ring Ethiopia to the level you would like it to, then come and live in Ethiopia.   47. Azeb and Meles are like King Ahab and Queen Jezebel in the Bible (Old Testament). Ahab was the worst and most evil king of Israel and Jezebel his wife, much worse than him and is an evil queen ever recorded in history. Their ending was sudden and very sickening.

    The above king and queen reaped what they sow and I don’t doubt the same will happen of Meles and Azab who do not care for the poor people of Ethiopia and have no Fear of the Lord. Greed is what is causing among leaders like Meles to steal and as a result they will pay for it.
