(BBC) — Hosni Mubarak has decided to step down as president of Egypt. In an announcement on state TV, Vice-President Omar Suleiman said Mr Mubarak had handed power to the military.
It came as thousands massed in Cairo and other Egyptian cities for an 18th day of protest to demand Mr Mubarak’s resignation.
Protesters responded by cheering, waving flags, embracing and sounding car horns. “The people have brought down the regime,” they chanted.
Mr Suleiman said Mr Mubarak had handed power to the high command of the armed forces.
“In the name of God the merciful, the compassionate, citizens, during these very difficult circumstances Egypt is going through, President Hosni Mubarak has decided to step down from the office of president of the republic and has charged the high council of the armed forces to administer the affairs of the country,” he said.
“May God help everybody.”
The military high command is headed by Defence Minister Mohamed Hussein Tantawi.
Mr Mubarak has already left Cairo and is in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh where he has a residence, officials say.
Constitution breached
In Cairo, thousands of people are gathered outside the presidential palace, in Tahrir Square and at state TV.
They came out in anger following an address by Mr Mubarak on Thursday. He had been expected to announce his resignation but instead stopped short of stepping down, transferring most powers to Mr Suleiman.
The BBC’s Jon Leyne in Cairo said the announcement caught everyone by surprise, and all over the city drivers honked their horns and people fired guns into the air.
But the army takeover looks very much like a military coup, our correspondent adds.
The constitution has been breached, he says, because officially it should be the speaker of parliament who takes over, not the army leadership.
Oil price falls after Egypt’s President Mubarak resigns
(The Telegraph) — Oil fell in late trading after Egypt’s President Mubarak resigned, bringing an end to weeks of protests that have spooked the energy market.
The price of Brent crude rose sharply early on Friday when it appeared that the Egyptian leader would cling to power, raising fears about the key Suez canal transport route. Brent, the key London oil contract, has risen more than the US benchmark WTI – at one point trading at a $16 premium – as it is more exposed to the region.

The next step is Ethiopian dictator Melese Zenawi has to step down soon!!!
elelelele!!!
I am jealous (in the positive way) when I see what had happened in Egypt. The last few weeks I was dreaming the whole time when I will see such kind of poplar revelation in my birth country and send this people (Melese and his clone) to their place (prison), our county suffer so much hard to describe it in ward in the hand of the so called leaders, the county who hungry of freedom for so long, the people who has been killed and abuse by their own leader….hope my prayer will be heard one day. My hut is off for the Egyptian people and great respect for the Egyptian military, this is what it looks like when people said enough is enough, this is the revolution that a military left the people to speak their mind. I hope and I wish we Ethiopian will learn a lot from Egyptian (I know our country circumstance little deferent), however we still can learn a lot especially the opposition. Can’t wait to see the tribal regime goes to their grave, the Ethiopian live under the leader they choose. Can’t wait to see Melese and his regime paid the price for the unspeakable crime they did…
It is not possible to terrorize human beings indefinately. Sooner or later all oppressed people will be free and tyrants whether they are “friendly” or not have no place in this internet/globalization age.
weyane/tplf is next …no doubt!
Freedom for Egypt but not for Ethiopia. How painful is that to watch?
‘AIGAFORUM’ learns the situation in Egypt just today. It wrote, in soft language’ a paragraph about the resignation of Hosni Mubarak. Where has the f**n ‘DEDEBIT’ editor been for the last twenty days?
NEXT MELES REGIM WHO ELSE. DJEBUTY THE 3RD. AND UGANDA AND KENYA NEXT. THEY ARE ALL A SEREVANT FOR WEST. BUT ISAYAS NOT SERVE THE WEST SO HE MUST STAY ON THE CHARE UNTIL ERITREA TO BE SINGAPOR.
WHO IS NEXT?
MOST LIKELY (99.6%) meles zenawi!
THE EGYPT ARMY SHOULD BE CONGRATULATED FOR REMAINING NEUTRAL AND PROFESSIONAL TO THEIR AUTHORITY, CITIZENS AND COUNTRY.
I HAVE FAITH WITH THE ETHIOPIAN ARMY TO THE SAME VERY SOON WHEN PEOPLE RISE UP AGAINST THE RUTHLESS REGIME OF ETHIOPIAN WOYANES!
THE ETHIOPIAN ARMY SHOULD NOT TAKE ORDERS FROM THE WOYANE GENERALS WHO HAPPEN TO BE FROM THE TRIBE OF THE RULING PARTY AND ENRICHED THEMSELF WITH BLOOD MONEY. MONEY MEANT FOR SUFFERING AND STARVING CHILDREN AND MOTHERS.
THE POLICE, SOLDIERS, MILITARY AND ARMED FORCES OF PATRIOT ETHIOPIANS NEED TO KNOW THAT THEY ARE SONS, DAUGTERS, BROTHERS, SISTERS, FATHERS AND MOTHERS OF ETHIOPIANS WHOSE LIFE IS DETERIORATING AS THE RESULT OF T.P.L.F MISRULE.
I HAVE TO CONGRATULATE ETHIOPIAN ARMED FORCES IN ADVANCE FOR REFUSING TO TURN THEIR WEAPON ON THEIR FELLOW ETHIOPIANS!
Now we all have to watch what is going to happen. This can be a death knell call to extremists such as the Muslim Brotherhood and some communist thugs. But it also opens a new era of military rule in Egypt and things can go complicated from there on if one general come out as an reincarnation of Gamal or a photocopy of General Liamine Zéroual of Algeria. Extremist groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood are hell-bent in their resolve to change their society into a caliphate of a thousand years ago. Its a a religious fantasy that will drive them into being ruthless killers with no trace of magnanimity. Then they will blame everything on ‘Amreeka’ and ‘Izrael’. I remember an interview CNN conducted among the protesters where one scarfed lady shouted ‘Izrael is our enemy’. This shows that these extremist groups and its leaders have ‘concocted’ up an excuse already for their impending failure if they ever or ‘dare’ to rule that country. But to the ordinary and heroic people of Egypt I tipped my hat to them and and am pleased to shout out to them ‘Congratulations!!!!!!’.
Obama’s promises start to flow in his second term. In Cairo speech
‘I have come here to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect; and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive, and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles – principles of justice and progress; tolerance and the dignity of all human beings’
And in Africa Ghana “This mutual responsibility must be the foundation of our partnership. And today, I will focus on four areas that are critical to the future of Africa and the entire developing world: democracy; opportunity; health; and the peaceful resolution of conflict.
First, we must support strong and sustainable democratic governments.
As I said in Cairo, each nation gives life to democracy in its own way, and in line with its own traditions. But history offers a clear verdict: governments that respect the will of their own people are more prosperous, more stable, and more successful than governments that do not.”
and so on please refresh your memory I put his speech link

2 dictators down and more to go. Hats off to the brave Egyptian peole who fought persistently day and night in the cold for 3 weeks to remove the dictator they hated most. It didn’t come without a price; more than 300 of them paid the ultimate price with their lives. So far it has been a bad year for dictators and who will be next?

YES for egyptians we need to be happy for them their voices have
finally answered their determination got a pay off. the price they have paid was not for nothing that was because they struggle as
one people . I believe we have learn something from this it not
a party we need to relay on it’s our people we need to depend on
ethiopia is one poor nation woyane is just one small party but we
have so many opposition party’s that is because every one wants
to be in power and if we love our people to have freedom and democracy now is the time to have one voice against WOYANEE.
First, I would like to congratulate the Egyptian people, they deserve it considering what they have done for the last 18 days. Trust me, what happened in Cairo, Tahrir (independence) squre (the 18 days revolution) will be repeated in Addis Ababa, Meskel Squre soon. Egypt’s Tahrir squre proved that no dictatorial force can beat the masses, persistence is the key. At last, the Ethiopian people will prevail.
Down with Weyane, and Victory to the masses.
Meles and his wife must be dealt with like Chawchesko of Romania. The crime that this ugly dictator and his Tigre thugs perpetrated on the Ethiopian people should and must not go without justice. The peoples’s power in Egypt is also coming to Ethiopia very soon – it is a matter of days not months – countdown to how many days left for the dictator of Ethiopia to stay in power!!!
Reply
Unite all Ethiopians and ignore those weyanes who are trying to be oromos, amharas… at this moment. They are trying to confuse ethiopians (who are one) so that they can stay in power. Their time is over!!Ethiopia forver!!!
Congratulations to all the brave Egyptians! If I am this happy for Egyptians, I cannot even to start to imagine how I would feel when that day come for Ethiopia. May the same God/Allah that humiliated and got rid off the Egyptian dictator, also get rid off the bloody hand woyane dictator. The sweat, tears and blood of Ethiopian people won’t go in vain — Meles, your days are numbered!
It took 10 days for Ben Ali to depart
With 8 billions in Swiss Bank Account
Took 18 days for Hosni Mubarak to go
With 70 billions in cargo
Ethiopians be ready for the 2.5 billion Zenawi
There is still a vacant spot in Mahaklawi !
God/Allah Bless Ethiopia & give us the courage to rise up.
There is no doubt in my mind Ethiopians from Moyle to Badame, and Jimmy to Degahabur and in between will rise against dictator Melese. Before the moment arrives, though, there needs to be adequate preparations and all conceivable details worked out. The discussion need to focus on planning. Obviously, there is limitation as to what we can say or plan about the coming apprising on the internet. There has to be another medium where we can use for the initial aspect of the planning. This ought to be the dominant theme that needs to occupy our attention.
Finally over. From now on I hope other African leaders learn from this and prepare for change. For God’s sakes our leaders must realize that their ppl and thier countries will remain but individuals (leaders) are only temporary. Work for your ppl prepare for smooth handing of power and please restrict your leadership and do not run for presidential office over and over again. Well this days no one can be fooled by any kind of excuses let our ppl enjoy democracy and freedom. If we can not learn from Egypt and Tunisia we are dead and we are simply harming our nations. Think about it our African leaders.
I pray that such a day will come to Ethiopia very soon. I really do hope that Ethiopians will rise up together leaving their diffrences aside. May God Free Ethiopia
My dear people, what are we waiting for???? The time chase dictator like Meles has arrived. This is Meles’s turn, let us kick him out!!!
I am ready to buy one way ticket!
Free Ethiopia!!!!
The final hour for dictatorships are bitter and humiliating like this. All the dictatorships should need to resign from power by their own. People power is above all! I hope this will also occure in Addis Ababa soon!!!
Mr. Alemayhu Even though isayas afework not serving the west
that does not make him holly actually he was also jailing killing
using force to his people for the last two decades above all he
was a woyanee friend up until 1998 and no doubt he is also a
dictator . i would you to put his name in the list so all of will
breath a fresh air and the ethiopian and eritrean people will also have a lasting peace …
Does this sound familiar? How The Mubarak Family Made Its Billions:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/11/how-the-mubarak-family-made-its-billions_n_821757.html
I think it’s a good idea to wait for the next election rather than protest because Woyane army are not like Egyptians army. Egyptians army are well organized, well educated, and they are from all Egyptians ethnics groups and they new that the people’s revolution is right ,but 99% of Woyane’s army high rank officers/comanders and 75% soldiers are from thier area. They will killed all of us. If so, are we ready to fight back? and how? Journalist Eskinder Nega already warned by Woyane/Agazine army according to VOA news. Therfore, if we are not ready to fight back, we rather not to do any uprising in ethiopia because they don’t care about human lives or destruction the country. They already built thier region with the ethiopia economy. So, time will come ,but egyptians and Tunisians time is not ours.
We have other option.Every body Needs to go out and protest whatever happens there is no going back since
we are dealing with none ethiopian killers and i am saying this some of you were not happy when i said just like
{finfine} did. but if we put this into consideration then the out come will be different otherwise it will be fool me
once and fool me twice .. Because the woyane solder don’t have an ethiopian filling they are all KORKORO RAS NACHEW They don’t even use rubber bullet even though they knew the protesters was not armed. we need to
get rid off Woyane by all means necessary but we need to find out HOW/WHEN/above all with whom ….
When i saw the so called ” Mubarak supporters” coming out on that blody wednesday, it reminded me of the so called “Meles supporters” that came out to columbia university to counter the opposition.
