Azeb Mesfin, mother of corruptionA major newspaper based in Madrid, Spain, ABC Internacional, has reported that Azeb Mesfin, the wife of Ethiopia’s dictator Meles Zenawi is squandering the 1.2 billion euros her husband has stolen during the past two decades. (Read here)

The newspaper identifies Azeb Mesfin as one of the most wasteful wives of African leaders and accuses her of siphoning off millions of dollars.

Azeb is known among Ethiopians as the mother of corruption.

The other wives of African dictators the newspaper listed include Grace, the notorious wife of Zimbabwe’s dictator Robert Mugabe, and Leila Trabelsi, the wife of the recently deposted Tunisian dictator Ben Ali.

    In short, governance in Africa is too personalised. They see the state as the National cake into which they have the lion’s share whilst the rest of society have the misfortune of sharing the bit of the national cake that is so tiny they have no chance of a smell or a lick of the cake.

    I suggest to you all a book called the “The states in Africa: The politcs of the Belly” By J. F Bayrat. Great book that shows how involvement into politics in Africa generally means an apportunity to amass wealth.

    This is what we should be careful who we wish for. This is not to say we cannot have anyone better. We can; however the focus should be strengthing civil societies that demand our country have istituitions that are accountable to the rule of law. That are above any political party or leader. This should be the focus of our demand. Without that, i doubt anything to would change regardless of who comes or goes.

I find that very contradictory to the principles of Capitalistic mentality the west attempts to shove, through the throats of many African countries. There is just no winning with this people. If we are socialist country,For instance like Eritrea, where President Issays’s wife, her yearly clothing budget is less than 900 nakfa which is really about 500 Ethiopian birr, she can’t even afford to buy any decent looking cloth, I don’t’ know if any of you had the chance of seeing his wife our first lady, her clothing is so average,wears shash, most of the time, cause no money for hair dresser, you won’t even distinguish her from regular people, 90% of her wore drops are made in Eritrea. She was telling the public that she was short of managing and short of paying school fees for her children. She was pretending as if she had no full control over her children.
