ESFNA falling apart

The Ethiopian Sports Federation in North America (ESFNA) is falling apart in the face of leadership crisis and an impending boycott. The 28-year-old organization has been confronted with numerous problems during the past five years after it was hijacked by the ruling party in Ethiopia through its money man Al Amoudi. The problems include corruption, declining attendance at the annual events, lack of discipline, and poor management.

ESFNA’s problems surfaced in the media when the executive committee arbitrarily reversed the 27-member board’s decision last October to invite Judge Birtukan Mideksa as a guest of honor at the July 2011 event in Atlanta and refused to have an independent CPA audit the organization’s finances.

Recently, the finance head of ESFNA, Ato Abework Abay, resigned after pointing out financial mishandling and lack of transparency on the part of the chairman and other members of the executive committee. The new finance head, Ato Million Gebreyesus, and other members of the board have also questioned the competence of the chairman and the secretary in a recent confidential memo. Some have called on the resignation of the chairman, arguing that it would be impossible to hold the scheduled July 2011 event in Atlanta unless solutions are found urgently.

Meanwhile, Ethiopians in Atlanta are preparing to boycott the July 2011 event. Community leaders have warned the executive committee that unless the board’s decisions are implemented, they will advise members of the Ethiopian community to stay away from the event.

To make matters worse for the ESFNA, the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel has canceled its $250,000 contract citing security problems that have occurred at last year’s event in San Jose where rooms had been vandalized and guests were harassed.

During the past five years, the ESFNA has become a source of embarrassment for the Ethiopian community in North America and a political tool for the Woyanne ruling junta. If there is any chance of salvaging ESFNA, the entire executive committee must resign and be replaced with competent individuals who are free of corruption and Woyanne connection.

  3. Inviting judge Birtukan is an excellent idea but why should it be a matter of life and death, say, to the point of absolutely destroying the entire long standing organization unless there are also other even more potent background positions?

    Single mother Birtukan is my hero too but she has suffered the most and needs to have her high jacked life back on track and take care of her baby and her aging mother rather than trying to have a boxing day out there in the rain with a brutal one man dictatorship who have done nothing in his entire life other than practicing boxing and kickboxing.

    Why shouldn’t or can’t we assemble, motivate, fund and put strong and experienced men to box the dictator out of King Menelik’s palace so that the dead king may thank us all. Look at men like Hailu Shawel mewing like kitten for a drop of milk from the dictator and sabotaging every thing possible, including judge Birtukan’s efforts.

  5. It sad that to see the only organization that represent most of us without religion, politics and ethnic ended up in this kind of situation. From the last 28 years I travel and participate 22 times as soccer player and then as participant. I enjoying going there and have fun with childhood friends and family members. However the last few years the way the leadership do business put this organization in bad situation. I want this organization to survive and go back to what originally intended to be. There are a few people who put these organization in this situation if I were them I should leave that place for the seek of the organization, they might think they are doing something good but as far as I know it is a time to give up that place and pass it to others who can save this organization from total collapse. These few people become so much controversial and they losing their good names, I know most of in person. Actually one of them was my sport hero when I grow up….The first time I heard from a closed friend of mine who happened to be a delegate from one of the state and he happened to be in that meeting mention the name Birtuken for the guest of honor for the coming year celebration…

    The first thing I said why you put Birtuken name if she is not qualify to be a guest of honor whatever reason they said she is not qualify. Every body in that meeting should know that majority of the Diaspora has some kind of disappointment about the current government and anyone who victimized by TPLF automatically become a hero for most freedom seeker… she is a symbol of a victim by the thugs in Aratkillo and it is a very sensitive issue for most of us rejecting her from coming… once she is nominated they should respect the outcome of the vote. The original decision of the delegate should be uphold even if the original person who nominated her agree to withdraw her name from the nominee. I have great respect for Birtuken, she is more than ESFNA, and she is a true daughter of Ethiopia who gives up her life to speak up the turth. I would love to see her coming to the celebration as guest of honor she deserve to be there as a guest of honor… .

    Hope and pray that this organization will stay for so many more years. I need to see my kids playing soccer wearing one of the t-shirt under the Ethiopian flag.

  6. Fassil Abebe of Public Relations from Los Angeles, CA is the main orcahstrator who is led by Abenet G/meskel of aka alamudi servant is manipulating the entire esfna now while others seems fair. Ethiopians in North America should support esfna team memebers to expose the dirty job of Fasil and to make esfna clean of any corrupted group like fasil and any weyane connected group. Let ethiopians at least stand up to save esfna from the corrupted members and weyane members to the minimum here in the united states, let alone our other critical contribution to get rid of the weyane cancer elements from ethiopia.

I don’t even think that you ever worried about someone’s feelings whenever you start writing an article. I also do not observe that you take care of your wordings. As a result, you deliver nothing to the legitimate struggle but hurt the feelings of your country men and women. I also do not believe that you are doing this intentionally. I therefore kindly advice you that you share your writings with someone whom you trust to read the paper first to advice you or to edit them.

    Since I also know that you do not like critics and delete so many comments, I don’t think that you will either post my comment or accept my brotherly advice.

    Elias – it is time to look at each and every opportunity that unites us. With all its weaknesses and failures ESFNA serves the community as a social gathering where members meet and discuss on different subject before and after sport events. It is therefore a good media to disseminate information and raise awareness. No one can gather such a large number of community members as ESFNA – and that by itself is an achievement. One’s political view, or religion, or etnicity for that matter, should not be a reason for not associating with him or her. Please stop using your site as a source of division.

This is truly sad, to see woyane interfere in every aspect of the good people of Ethiopians life, this is truly a very sick political party, you leave them alone, and come some 8000 miles away, and they still want to harass and hurt their citizens, amazing, I don’t think no Government goes to this level of spitefulness to hurt their own citizen. truly just amazing. but again I also see, an administration knowingly or unknowing that is being infiltrated by woyane to undermine the hard work of many Ethiopians. Woyane is doing this only because it lives to see, the misery of Ethiopian people no matter where they are, it just can’t see them be happy not even for a lousy 7 days, not even, if they are as far away as America. Just know, when in trouble, we are here to help, No one understands better the working of woyane, as the President Issays, personally trained and groomed them, Should ESFNA needs some serious reshuffling or restructuring, we have many Col. Fistums that we can dispatch to make the correct adjustments so, this great organization that brings so much joy and happiness to not just north American Ethiopians but to All who love sports and friends of Ethiopians as well.

  20. Things like this sadden me and then anger me. Instead of growing in size and numbers such favorite annual waterholes for those who originated from our old country are subjected to rive into inharmonious pieces. I am from a school of conviction that settings intended for public entertainment should be left alone by political groupings. They can serenade the audience with songs laced with their political leanings but the organization should be neutral to all and free from any of such organizations. If not, then you will have this. I had the privilege of attending two of this festival and I found it to be a great opportunity for people of different background to come together in harmonious spirit. I was a beneficiary of such gathering in such as I was able to reconnect with a childhood friend who I had not seen for a long, long time. I could not believe it and my friend also could not believe it. We spent some time reminiscing about our childhood years including how we used to like train surfing in the small train station back home. This was during the early 1990’s. This childhood has left us since then and May He Rest In Peace. I am sure there are many, many others who have had the same experience of meeting people they had seen for years or even decades. It just breaks my heart that we will be denied such an opportunity because and just because someone is hell-bent to bring it under a political spell. Monsters!!! Heartless monsters!!!!!

    Please select your words about ESFNA. You are actually criticizing the name the organization not the people in it. When you are sending such kind of statement, you are weakening the organization and its name, an organization that is very much needed to exist (not new organization) for the Ethiopian community. Would you erase Ethiopia’s name in order to free her from her parasites? No, you get rid of the parasite and free her!

    you tell us that Woyanne is trying to influence the life of Ethiopians 8000 miles away? Let me tell you a story. There was an Eritrean guy who faught against Ethiopian forces for 14 years. Some years before Eritrean independence he could come to Europe and settle there, get the nationality of the country he is living in, get married and name his first born son Isayas… A couple of years ago he attended some meetings organised by ELF members in the town he is living, and he did not know that this was reported to Asmara. Three years ago he was in Eritrea for a visit, and he was arrested and accused of treason and conspiring against Eritrea. Long story short: he came free after some cash changed hands, some influential people spoke in his favor… He swears never to set foot in Eritrea again as long as the present government is in power.
    I have attended a rally for the release of Birtukan Mideksa, I have attended a chaotic Kinijit meeting in Europe. I was never bothered by any Woyanne here or at home because of my political views; never.
    Now an Eritrean dare tell us Ethiopians that our government “want to harass and hurt their citizens, amazing, I don’t think no Government goes to this level of spitefulness to hurt their own citizen”!? Please mind your own business and keep your unsolicited advice to yourself.

The comentator intent to me is questionable. I do not think he knows what he is talking about.   34. Everything al amoudi put his hands on is falling apart. This guy bought St. George Club few years a go. Now the club is at the bottom of the preimer legue in Addis. Most funs fear it may not even survive the current situation. The Menilik Park infront of the ECA building has been functional and open to the public since 1963. Few years a go al amoudi puts his hand on it, now the park is closed being unfunctional. Hora Ras Hotel in Debre Zeit has been in operation since 1945 or so. Al amoudi purchased this hotel about 10 years a go and put it out of operation since then. NOW, the turn is ESFNA.

    I know “Feleke Teka” in person. He is a known womanizer as Al Amoudi is.

    Although he abounded his family (his wife and two children) several years ago, I do not think he would be one of the Tugs and Puppets of Shark AL Amoudi.

    For sure, I was informed that he is managing ESFNA behind the scene. I also gathered that all the Executive Committee members are manipulated by him. He gives them instructions. Certainly, Fassil Abebe is guided by him.

    I was told Feleke Teka and Fassil Abebe together raises fund under the name ESFNA in private.

    All these things I said about Feleke I could prove. But again I doubt Feleke would be a Tug of SHARK Al Amoudi and a member of TPLF.

    By the way, I know for sure that his parents are from Gonder. But he was born in Kenya and grown in Yemen and he speaks little or no Amharic.

    Alamoudi did not buy St. George, he is , and the club has profited a lot from the help it is getting from Mr A. If you want to see the unprecedented success the team has had in the last 20 years, just go to the club’s website. This year they had a bad start, but that can happen to any team in the world. That is football!
    It was Alamoudi and not Elias who paid for the medical treatments of Mengistu Worku, Alamoudi has been the main sponsor of the CECAFA games, and he paid fully for the tornaments in 2004 and 2006 in Ethiopia. He is the one who is paying for our national team’s trainer who is showing progress.

  39. I appeal to the below ESFNA Executive Committee members to save there organization from a plot set by Fassil Abebe and Feleke Teka to dismantle ESFNA. On behalf of Ethiopia and the Diaspora I beg you to act urgently against these two individuals plot before your ESFNA be like the former Kinijit.

    It is very clear now more than ever that the board of directors and some Executive committee of ESFNA have no control over their organization. The organization is fully controlled and manipulated by a handful of individuals who are led by Fassil Abebe and Feleke Teka. Most board members and some of the Executive Committee members do not even know these individuals.

    Case in point, according to the rumor I gathered the king makers of ESFNA, four individuals including Fassil Abebe and Feleke Teka, hold an emergency meeting last night in LA at Messob Restaurant.

    In the meeting, they decided on two things:

    First, not to hold the emergency face to face meeting the boards of directors are lobbying for. The stated rational for not holding the meeting is that Fassil Abebe cannot participate in the meeting. And some members of the board of directors do not have money due to the current economic condition.

    Second, to appease the public, they reached to a conclusion that Mekonnen Demisiew must resign and replaced by “Feleke Teka”.

    I have no doubt that Elias Kifle soon will disclose more information about the new president of ESFNA, “Feleke Teka”.

    Elias Kifila you are doing a great job. Please keep it up. Also please keep “Feleke Teka under your radar since he is becoming the new president of ESFNA. You must dig information about him and share it with the public because he is one of the individual who is destroying the origination in collaboration with the VILLAIN, Fassil Abebe.

Nevertheless, please let you know that as one of the true freedom fighters – for so many years (may be more than your age)- it is the people like you and Elias who do not ever show any kind of “growth” hurts my feelings and fills my heart with sorrow and hopelessness.

    Tulu – if you want to argue please argue with ideas and not individuals. My or someone’s identity has nothing to do with a kind of struggle we need to liberate our beloved country. Don’t you know that most of all white university students in England play a greatest role in supporting the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa? If ESFNA is not a political party I don’t see any reason why Woyanne or Shabia supporters could not be part of the Organization. If we are not ready to do so and make all efforts necessary that this Organization gather all of us in the name of Ethiopia – we will be narrow minded as Woyanne – but with a different ideology. And that is the greatest failure.

    Tulu – My motive, identity, and intention is clear – that we do what ever it takes to remain united under the banner of Ethiopia – that we focus on the few strengths that ESFNA has – and on such an attractive ground we build a new foundation that allow us to fight the tyranny that our children and grand children live in a democratic and prosperous Ethiopia.

  41. The problem with many here is not even related with Ethiopian politics. Call it any thing you want people are going through behavioral changes. I refuse to wake up each morning and come to these forums to spread hate & rumor against our citizens. Tribal and parochial politics is raising its ugly head more than ever, and need not be permitted to corrode the life of our people. We need to behave responsibly and stop categorizing events in terms of Opposition verses weyane world view. It is perfectly acceptable not to comment in an issue when there is nothing to say about it. But it will never be acceptable to present gossips and old wife’s story about people we don’t like.

They were told by the Executive Committee — Feleke Teka, CPA — they will hold the emergency face to face meeting if they have a majority of the teams vote. Some board members worked extremely hard and secured the majority vote. Once they got the majority vote Feleke Teka, CPA told them since the call of the meeting is to discuss emergency issues the majority vote means more than two third of the board members. While they were working to gather the two third votes Feleke Teka, CPA told them that without securing the participation of each and every members of ESFNA board and Executive Committee member the emergency meeting cannot be held.

    Immediately, LA Star, Fasile Abebe, came forward saying he cannot participate in the meeting.

    6.3.2 A quorum of 2/3 majorities of Board Directors may call a special meeting of the Executive Committee at any time. The meeting may be held at such time and place as the notice may specify. It may also be conducted by teleconference service.

They have never stand for any community, they are standing for themselves to make big money. Every election they pass the tourch to make only money but they have never try to support the community they serve. That is why they are not willing to openen the book.     1.If you were a Freedom Fighter for so many years as you claim why you have a difficult time to accept freedom of expression? I hope you have reasonable explanation for this missing idea from your experience.

    2. If you think every political entity has the right to participate including Woyane, does this including opposition parties? If this happen do you think the organization will survive?
    3. Why you and me have to fight on the issue that will not bring development or change to our beloved mother land?

    As you stated your motive clearly, mine is identical to yours. When you and me are fighting on the assignment that was purposly created by few greedy individuals, our primary agenda will be behind the burner for next day. If we get the courage to revisit the main item , we will be lucky.
